  • Aupen, Singapore’s Buzzing Bag Brand, Faces Trademark Woes with Target: Staff Cuts and Product Withdrawal Announced

Aupen, Singapore’s Buzzing Bag Brand, Faces Trademark Woes with Target: Staff Cuts and Product Withdrawal Announced

Aupen, a burgeoning handbag brand founded by former national swimmer Nicholas Tan, announced layoffs on Monday as the company navigates mounting legal challenges. The spokesperson confirmed that staff were informed of the cutbacks, which affect over ten employees in Singapore as of last December.

Operating solely online with no physical storefronts, Aupen specializes in asymmetrical leather handbags, with most pieces priced under US$600. The brand has gained significant traction since its founding in 2022, quickly capturing the attention of celebrities like Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, and Kylie Jenner. However, it remains unclear if the company will continue its operations amid these turbulent circumstances.

    Legal Showdown with Target

The layoffs come on the heels of a letter from retail giant Target, opposing Aupen’s attempt to register its trademark internationally, including in the U.S. The communication, shared by Aupen on Instagram last month, raised concerns over “source confusion” due to the phonetic and visual similarities between Aupen and Target’s own label, Auden, which has been utilized since 2019 and was relaunched last July.

In its letter, Target sought clarification on Aupen’s use of its brand name for products and services, questioning why any confusion is unlikely. With nearly 2,000 stores across the U.S. and recently reporting net sales of US$25.21 billion for the second quarter of 2025, Target’s weight in the retail realm is formidable.

    Aupen’s Climb to Fame

Aupen’s rapid ascent has been nothing short of impressive. From its inception, the brand has established a cult following and even partnered with LVMH Metiers d’Art, an arm of the esteemed luxury conglomerate LVMH. It’s almost as if the fashion gods conspired for a perfect storm of success—until now.

The Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) has stepped in to support Aupen during this tumultuous time, advising the brand to seek independent legal counsel. Despite Aupen’s characterization of Target’s challenge as a lawsuit, IPOS clarified that they do not recognize it as such, confirming that Aupen’s existing trademark in Singapore remains intact. “IPOS maintains a registration regime that ensures equal and fair access for all companies seeking trademark protection in Singapore,” the agency stated.

    A Personal Plea

Amid this legal fray, Tan has taken to social media to voice his concerns. He described the situation as a David versus Goliath struggle, stating, “a $100 billion giant is crushing an independent brand.” He highlighted the potential for long, costly court battles that could stifle Aupen’s product launches while allowing larger competitors to mimic designs at a fraction of the cost. “This will erase us. And when we are gone, people may think that Auden is Aupen,” he lamented in an Instagram story. Further complicating matters, he attributed the recent staff layoffs to the overwhelming legal pressures, dedicating himself to honoring the salaries of his team and suppliers amidst the turmoil.

    Questions & Answers

    What triggered Aupen’s layoffs?
The layoffs at Aupen were driven by ongoing legal challenges with Target, which oppose the brand’s attempt to register its trademark internationally, including in the U.S.

How has Aupen gained popularity since its inception?
Founded in 2022, Aupen quickly amassed a following through its unique asymmetrical leather handbags, garnering attention from high-profile celebrities and even collaborating with LVMH Metiers d’Art.

What is the stance of the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore regarding Aupen’s trademark?
The IPOS has reached out to Aupen for support and confirmed that, while they are aware of Target’s opposition, Aupen’s existing trademark in Singapore remains valid.

  • Moschino launches limited edition for Hong Kong

Moschino launches limited edition for Hong Kong

November 15, Harbour City welcomed a new pop-up store by Moschino with an exclusive collection designed  by Jeremy Scott, Creative Director of the brand, for Hong Kong only. Colorful, ironic, super glamorous and absolutely Moschino: these are the qualities of the collection made exclusively for Hong Kong. The collection represents the vibrant city and reflects the pop soul of Moschino’s Creative Director.

It is a triumph of colors. 12 pieces each adorned with fun multicolored patches: two T-shirts and a T-shirt dress, a hoodie, a sweater, a bomber jacket, 4 denim pieces, a backpack and a bag.

The Moschino logo is revisited in a super colorful version along with iconic graphics like the peace sign. Each letter and each symbol becomes a silk satin patch, applied to the pieces using a special zig-zag stitch technique and made even more ironic with graphics created in thread and crystals.

Moschino Hong Kong Exclusive Collection is available exclusively at Moschino stores in Hong Kong.

It is an incredible moment for the brand, that has been gaining popularity among Millennials and GEN Z thanks to the ironic touch brought by Jeremy Scott.

Earlier this year, Moschino gathered attention globally for its capsule collections in collaboration with H&M and Disney with celebrities such as Gigi Hadid and Naomi Campbell.

In the run-up to the official release, Moschino’s Creative Director Jeremy Scott put on a celeb-tastic fashion show in New York. During the show, Gigi walked the runway in a hoodie printed with Moschino’s signature chain-print alongside her sister Bella in a zip-front black leather mini dress. Naomi Campbell closed the show in a silver sequinned hoodie dress and over-the-knee black quilted boots.

To catch momentum with the success of capsule collections, Moschino has also announced the launch of a new retail concept starting from the stores in Paris, which focuses on the creation of a design that facilitates the rotation of different collections throughout the year.

The design, thought to be a blank canvas ready to host diverse concepts at the same time, will be experimented in Europe to appeal to the new generation of customers.

If it is true that in the digital era,  the instant generation is no longer attracted by what is the promise of timeliness, limited editions aimed to satisfy a short-term desire of being among the happy few to win, it might be the key to steal the heart of GEN Z.

  • Hermes sales growth boosted by Asia

Hermes sales growth boosted by Asia

Hermes sales surged 11 per cent in the quarter to September, with all geographical regions performing well. Asia – excluding Japan – led the way, with sales up 14 per cent. The company reported a “significant increase” in Mainland China with new stores in Xi’an (which opened in September) and Changsha (in May) along with the Landmark Prince’s store in Hong Kong in January helping underpin growth.

A new commercial website hermes.cn, launched on October 17 and a massive duplex flagship opens tomorrow at Bangkok’s new IconSiam development. In Japan, sales rose 7 per cent.

Group-wide revenue reached  €4.316 billion at the end of September, with sales through company-owned stores up 11 per cent as well, confirming the trend evident during the first half of the year.

“Hermes realised a very strong growth over the first nine months of the year, in all regions,” said executive chairman Axel Dumas. “We keep our optimism for the future, but we are also thankful for the past.”

By product category, Hermes’ ready-to-wear division achieved growth of 15 per cent, aided by the successful launch of the women’s Spring-Summer 2019 collection, presented at the Hippodrome Paris Longchamp. Demand was also high for fashion accessories and shoes.

  • Vietnam footwear exports benefit from US-China trade dispute

Vietnam footwear exports benefit from US-China trade dispute

According to customs statistics, Vietnam’s footwear exports in the first nine months of this year were worth $11.74 billion, a 10.2 percent year-on-year increase. Its exports to China in the period have risen by 28.5 percent, to Japan by 14.7 percent, and to the U.S. by 13.5 percent. Vietnam is the second biggest exporter of footwear to the U.S. behind China, shipping 404 million pairs of shoes last year.

The upward trend is likely to continue, too, as rising wages in China increase the cost of goods produced there and the country is thus directing more of its manufacturing resources toward higher-priced goods like electronics.

Adidas CEO Kasper Rorsted told last May that his company is shifting sourcing of footwear from China to Vietnam.

Vietnam has in fact overtaken China as its top supplier, with Vietnamese factories producing 44 percent of its shoes by volume last year and Chinese manufacturers supplying 19 percent, according to Adidas.

This would help shield the company from potential tariffs or supply chain disruptions if President Donald Trump’s trade war with China continues to escalate, a fact its competitors also seem to be taking notice of.

Vietnam may see export orders surging as footwear importers shun China to avoid high U.S. tariffs and choose the Southeast Asian nation instead, local media quoted Diep Thanh Kiet, vice chairman of the Vietnam Leather, Footwear and Handbag Association (Lefaso), as saying.

“Vietnam’s leather and footwear export can reach $19.5 billion or slightly higher this year depending on the situation,” he said. Vietnam’s footwear exports were worth $14.65 billion last year.
