Korean fashion firm Handsome unveils AI-designed clothes

South Korean fashion label Handsome says it will release the country’s first clothes designed with artificial intelligence technology. Handsome, an affiliate of Hyundai Department Store Group, said it joined forces with Designovel to create new patterns for clothes released under the SJYP brand. Designovel is a startup specialising in AI fashion technology.

The fashion company said the first product, dubbed Dino Hood Tee, is printed with an image of a dinosaur and toy blocks designed by Designovel’s program, Style AI.

The graphic was based on 330,000 images, including characters and logos, provided by Handsome.

Style AI uses a convolutional neural network, which is an image processing technology to modify patterns.

Handsome said it will review whether the AI technology can be applied in other areas of its fashion business.

Handsome, which has 27 global fashion brands in its portfolio, will expand 3.1 Phillip Lim distribution channels through Hyundai Department Store.

Launched by Chinese-American designer Phillip Lim in 2005, the label opened its first brick-and-mortar branded store for Korea in Cheongdam-dong in 2009.

  • Korea’s Handsome to offer home-trial service

Korean apparel retailer Handsome is launching a service for customers to have their selected clothes delivered and tried on at home before deciding whether to buy.

Online shoppers can pick up to three pieces of clothing marked as available for the service and have them delivered to their residence during a time slot of their choice. Handsome employees will deliver the clothing in branded vehicles.

Some 1300 clothing items from 21 of Handsome’s brands will be open to the “at Home” service that will first be offered to Handsome’s VIP and frequent online shoppers in some Seoul suburbs. The list of available products and suburbs served will gradually be expanded afterward, the company says.

Customers will have two days to decide whether they want to make any purchases or they can return all items without extra cost.

Handsome has been focusing on the online-to-offline business, allowing customers to buy online and pick up at offline locations and providing curation services to recommend items based on collected data on clients’ preferences. The company claimed the home-fitting service is the first in Korea’s fashion-retail industry.

“Amazon started its fitting service Prime Wardrobe last year for up to 15 items for a Prime member,” a company spokesperson said. “We will establish a differentiated shopping service that offers a wide range of information on fashion and communicates with customers.”

Handsome has previously taken its System and System Homme brands abroad. It has also clinched a deal with Artifacts, a boutique store in Taiwan that has six outlets in Taipei and Taichung. Earlier this year, the two clothing labels were picked up by department stores and shopping malls in China as well as the Galeries Lafayette department store in Paris.

Handsome entered the Chinese market early this year by partnering with Hangzhou Zhiheng Industrial.

Founded in 1987, Handsome was bought by Hyundai Home Shopping Network in 2012. It owns a string of fashion labels including Mine, System and Time.

  • Hyundai buying SK Networks’ fashion sector

Hyundai buying SK Networks’ fashion sector

South Korea’s Hyundai Department Store is buying trading company SK Networks’ fashion business for KRW326.1 billion (US$284 million).

When the purchase is complete, probably by February, SK Networks (SKN) will no longer have interests in the fashion industry.

The two companies have signed a deal to merge SKN’s 12 fashion brands into Hyundai’s Handsome fashion unit, which has annual sales of KRW750 billion. With SKN’s KRW600 billion added in, the merged group becomes the fourth-largest fashion company in South Korea behind E-Land, Samsung C&T and LF.

Hyundai says it will retain SKN’s 400 designers, merchandisers, marketers and production staff, guaranteeing their jobs for five years.

Analysts say the two businesses are a good fit and are unlikely to cannibalise each other’s trade as Handsome is known largely for its local womenswear brands while SKN is a major importer of global labels such as American Eagle, Club Monaco, DKNY and Tommy Hilfiger.

Its house brands  include Obzee, O’2nd and Rouge & Lounge.
