Pepper exports rise in volume, fall in value

While Vietnam’s pepper export volumes soared by 16.6% to 267,000 tons in 2023, the value dropped by 6% to US$912 million, according to the Vietnam Customs.

The average export price of Vietnamese pepper, which constitutes 60% of global supply, dropped by 19.4% from the previous year, to US$3,420 per ton.

Black pepper made up 71.2% of Vietnam’s exports, and white pepper comprised the remainder.

The U.S. remained the top purchaser of Vietnamese pepper, accounting for 23.5% of the total export value, followed by China 14.1%, India 5.4% and Germany 4.3%.

The U.S. decreased its pepper imports from India in favor of Vietnamese pepper, which is recognized for its favorable pricing and improving quality.

The Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association notes that Vietnamese pepper holds a competitive edge over other pepper-exporting nations such as Indonesia and India, bolstered by the European Union-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement, which has slashed the import tax on ground and crushed pepper to the EU to zero.

It is forecast Vietnam’s pepper export slow down because domestic supply is no longer abundant. The pepper inventory in 2024 will be at its lowest in many years.

This year’s pepper crop is projected to decrease by 10-15% to around 165,000 tons due to smaller cultivation areas and unfavorable weather conditions.

    Pepper exports rise in volume

Vietnam exported 153,000 tons of pepper worth US$483 million in the first half of this year, up 24% in volume but down 13.7% in value year-on-year.

According to the General Department of Vietnam Customs, the average price stood at $3,184 per ton, a decrease of 29.7% from a year earlier, due to weaker global demand.

Pepper exports to the U.S., UAE, India, Germany, the Netherlands, the U.K., and South Korea declined by 20-70%.

China and the U.S.were Vietnam’s biggest markets, accounting for 35% and 16% of its exports.

According to the Vietnam Pepper Association, China has large inventories of pepper and so will import less in the second half of this year. It had imported 46,169 tons in the first five months of the year.

Other major importers like the U.S. and the European Union will also import less pepper due to their economic situation and high inventories.

The price of black pepper in Vietnam is currently VND67,000-69,000 ($2.8-2.9) per kilogram, down VND3,000-5,000 from a year ago, and that of white pepper is VND103,000, down VND6,000.

Masterfoods revamps home herbs and spice range

Masterfoods has rolled out new packaging for its range of herbs and spices, aiming to make the shakers more user-friendly and with more differentiation between items. The herbs and spices will now come in color-coded lids, with improved labeling, and “easier-to-use” shakers.

Old screw-top caps will be replaced with flip-top lids so that people with impaired hand movements can use them with ease. The new lids will also make it easier for cooks to add the seasoning blends directly from the jar, said Masterfoods.

The change comes after research by Mars Food Australia, the manufacturer of Masterfoods, found people disliked “having to pick up every jar and read every label” to find the spice or herb they needed.

The new color-coded lids and easy-to-find labels would ensure herbs and spices do not get “lost in the shadows of the pantry”, another issue highlighted in the study.

Along with the product’s name on the lid, the following colors will be used for easier recall – green lids for herbs, orange for spices, and burgundy for seasoning blends.

“The new-look packaging will have the same quality herbs and spices MasterFoods is known for but will help shoppers easily find the product they’re looking for”, said Jane Horder, consumer insight and foresight leader at Mars Food.

The launch is supported by a new ad campaign created by Clemenger BBDO Sydney, which will appear across media platforms.
