    Nokia, Hitachi union will support local enterprises through 5G and private LTE solutions

    As part of the collaboration, the Nokia Digital Automation Cloud platform with its secure, reliable and low-latency connectivity will be used for applications including video analytics, AI, machine learning and IoT, as well as drones, group communication, and AR/VR. It will also enable autonomous transport vehicles, such as trucks, trains, forklifts and straddle carriers, to increase productivity at factories, utilities, airports and ports.

    The Japanese government is releasing 5G spectrum designated for individual companies and local governments (known in Japan as local 5G) at the end of 2019. This will enable enterprises, regional authorities and other organizations in Japan to deploy the next-generation of industrial-strength wireless connectivity based on LTE and 5G technologies to create local private, reliable networks.

    Nokia and Hitachi Kokusai Electric will collaborate to provide an eco-system of solutions to support the deployment of new digital automation services. Hitachi Kokusai Electric will share its expertise as a leader in driving the adoption of private LTE networks for industry use and disaster prevention in Japan. Nokia will lend its private LTE/4.9G and 5G wireless connectivity solutions, which have established a global marketplace footprint across energy, transportation, public sector, manufacturing and logistics.

    Hitachi forms IoT alliance with Thailand’s EEC

    Hitachi has teamed up with Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) Office to apply digital technologies including IoT to establish an innovative environment to promote development of the corridor.

    Under the agreement, the EEC Office and Hitachi will be working collectively using advanced digital technologies, including IoT related technologies, within the Eastern Economic Corridor region to establish a ‘cutting-edge’ IoT center.

    The EEC Office and Hitachi will collaborate on EEC development in various areas, such as implementing necessary study, introducing advanced science and technology.

    EEC Office will also provide relevant information and possible support in creating bases for the use of advanced digital technologies. With the EEC Office’s cooperation, Hitachi will promote the use of IoT technologies – for example, through undertaking data analytics using AI based on big data obtained from plants, office buildings, and other sources.

    It will also utilize the solution core and customer cases for Lumada, Hitachi’s IoT platform, and roll out digital solutions that contribute to the resolution of various issues in Thailand and the ASEAN region as a whole.
    Thailand is currently promoting measures aimed at establishing an advanced economic base and achieving further economic development.  In 2015, Thailand 4.0 was presented as a long-term vision of an ideal economic society, and the EEC development plan was laid out as one key measure in realizing this vision.

    Based on the EEC development plan, total investments on a scale of 1.5 trillion baht ($45.34 billion) are expected in the public and private sectors combined, and in addition to expanding airports and high-speed railways, the country will aim to attract and foster growth in 10 targeted industries, including robotics, digital technologies, and next-generation automotive.

    Meanwhile, as part of its 2018 Mid-term Management Plan, Hitachi will be promoting growth in the global market through the rollout of the Social Innovation Business, which creates new value through collaborative creation with customers by combining operational technology, IT, and products.

    Hitachi’s largest scale of business in the ASEAN market is in Thailand, where it is rolling out business in a broad range of fields, including the railways, elevators/escalators, industrial products, and information and telecommunications systems businesses.

    Hitachi aims to become leader of Thai elevator market by 2020

    Hitachi’s elevator and escalator distributor in Thailand is projecting aggressive sales growth to restore its top position in the local market in the next three years.

    Michael Tang, vice president of Hitachi Elevator (Thailand) Co., who has taken on a new role as head of its sales and marketing unit, said the company aims to increase its market share to 25 percent in 2020 from the current 17 percent in pursuit of market leader Mitsubishi Electric Corp.

    Hitachi was the market leader before the Asian financial crisis in 1997, which caused sales to decrease, Tang said.

    To attain the goal, the company needs to achieve annual sales growth of 20 percent on average and is seeking to sell 1,000 units this year, up 18 percent from 850 units in 2016. Of the 2017 total, elevators are expected to account for 70 percent and escalators 30 percent.

    Thailand’s elevator and escalator market, totaling about 5,500 units last year, is expected to grow 3 to 5 percent this year thanks to business expansion in the real estate and retail industries as well as public utility development in the country.

    Demand for home elevators will grow significantly in the next one to two years due to the rapidly aging population in Thailand, Tang said.

    The company forecasts that demand from the private sector, especially department stores and hospitals, will increase as government spending on infrastructure projects will motivate them to invest more, boosting the sales ratio of that sector to 65 to 80 percent in 2020.

    Hitachi expanded the annual capacity of its Thai plant from 1,500 units to 2,500 units last year and opened a regional training center in the country early this year to train and educate engineers from other Asian countries as well.

    The Japanese company plans to continue selling Thai-built products in overseas markets, expecting to boost the Thai arm’s revenue from exports to 60 percent of the total in 2020 from 10 percent at present.

    Hitachi deploying IoT solution for Curtin Univeristy

    Australia’s Curtin University has selected Hitachi to deploy an IoT solution to advance its vision of a smart campus that enhances the student experience, improves classroom learning and ultimately attracts more industry to collaborate on data-driven research.

    Curtin will partner with Hitachi to co-create solutions that harness IoT data through advanced analytics to provide insight into the daily running and utilization of the campus.

    Curtin University has more than 60,000 students and 4,000 staff. It is Western Australia’s largest and most culturally diverse university, and has one of Australia’s largest international student populations.

    Ian Callahan, chief operating officer of Curtin University said: “Understanding our campus operations and building utilization has become a major factor in Curtin’s smart campus initiative. With the Hitachi IoT solution, we can collect data using a variety of sensors to gather information on building trends, study patterns, and course attendance that can ultimately be used to improve student experience and enhance learning.”

    Ultimately, these data insights allow Curtin University to generate contextual information about the lifecycle of the student, the day to day reality of a staff member, the activity pattern of a lecture theater, and the dynamics and environmental health of a library.

    Callahan added: “We are effectively creating a living laboratory that is an open invitation to our own researchers and scientists from other universities to use our campus to discover and innovate with data-driven research. Hitachi demonstrated not only technology leadership but approached us with a very open mind, to participate in that living environment and collaborate with others.”

    With the Hitachi solution, the university will be able to combine video data with operational data across its campus facilities to provide analytics that support a smart campus. This is achieved through the integration of Hitachi Visualization Suite, Hitachi Video Analytics, Pentaho, Live Face Matching and Hitachi Data Systems Infrastructure and Compute. The single analytics dashboard provides the real-time knowledge the university needs to make informed decisions about their classes, operations and future requirements.

    “Curtin University is a prime example of forward-thinking organizations that have challenged Hitachi to develop its video analytics solutions to go beyond surveillance and public safety. They are effectively pioneers of digital transformation,” said Mark Jules, vice president of public safety and smart city solutions at Hitachi Insight Group.

    Hitachi shows off finger vein authentication

    Hitachi has developed a finger vein authentication system that does not require specialized hardware, using an ordinary smartphone camera with software processing to validate the identity of a user.

    This is the first time that such a solution has been demonstrated, Hitachi said, and the implication is that it can be used to easily the identity of returning customers for online shopping.

    The finger vein authentication system was among a host of other innovations demonstrated on the exhibition show floor of the company’s Social Innovation Forum 2016 held this week in Tokyo, Japan.

    The company aims to introduce its new finger vein authentication system for online shopping and financial transactions within a few years.

    At the moment, the system entails the use of an authentication app that takes a photo to read the vein patterns and compares it with pre-registered data. Several fingers are authenticated for greater security and higher accuracy, and by leveraging on the color recognition technology to detect the finger veins quicker, the process takes around one second.

    This makes it faster than the traditional user-ID and password systems, which forces users to remember a password. Moreover, the use of vein patterns is also considered as more secure as they are more difficult to forge or spoof compared to other biometric methods such as fingerprint, facial recognition or voiceprint.

    This is because finger veins hardly change, and are also unlikely to be counterfeit, according to company officials. This makes them perfect for integration into even lower-end smartphones without dedicated fingerprint scanners.
