Hooters Hong Kong to face legal action from unpaid rent

Again accused of failing to keep abreast of rent payments, Hooters Hong Kong is facing legal action and eviction from its Wyndham Street premises in Central.

A writ filed by landlord Dor Fook last week says the American restaurant chain has failed to pay nearly HK$1.52 million (US$194,300) in rent since October.

The document says Hooters Restaurants signed a 10-year lease in March 2016 for its ground-floor venue, agreeing to pay $330,000 a month for the first year. It also signed a five-year lease for a room above the shop, agreeing to a monthly rent of $24,000 for the first year.

Known for its buxom female servers in skimpy outfits, the restaurant is accused of not paying its rent and rates for the two spaces, constituting a repudiation of the lease.

Seeking to repossess the premises, the landlord will also claim $371,700 for every month the restaurant stays put, starting from this month, and $17,932 a month for rates.

This follows a previous threat of eviction in September, when Dor Fook lodged a legal bid for $1.13 million, about three months’ rent. Hooters Asia president Daniel Yong then said the company had paid off all its outstanding debt the day before the bid.

However, it is reported this week that Yong has left the company.

Paying off its HK$1 million (US$128,000) rent arrears, Hooters restaurant has staved off legal action and eviction from its Lan Kwai Fong premises.

Hooters Asia president Daniel Yong says he paid off the debt, amounting to about three months’ rent, the day before the court deadline after lawyers issued a writ on behalf of the landlord, property company Dor Fook Company.

Yong flew from his home in Singapore to reassure staff members that the restaurant was going to stay open, and says he still plans four more Hooters venues for Hong Kong.

He says the problems stemmed from past management, with the business “in a bit of a mess” when he took over two months ago.

Hooters Asia puts on bold front in rent tussle

Despite facing eviction from its Lan Kwai Fong location for failing to pay rent, Hooters Asia still plans expansion in Hong Kong.

Legal documents filed with the High Court on Friday on behalf of the landlord, Dor Fook Company, say the US restaurant/bar has failed to pay more than HK$1.13 million (US$145,000) in rent since April despite “repeated demands and requests”.

Meanwhile, Hooters Asia says it still plans four more venues for Hong Kong, despite its sole outlet breaking even for the first time last month.
Hooters signed a 10-year lease for the Wyndham Street venue in April last year, agreeing to pay $330,000 a month for the first year.

Hooters Asia president Daniel Yong, who took over management two months ago, says he is surprised by the legal action as he has already discussed repayment with the landlord. The former manager resigned this year, leaving a “messy accounting system” and unpaid bills, says Yong.

Its first establishment, in Clearwater, Florida, opened in 1983. Hooters’ website says the six founders were “quickly detained for impersonating restaurateurs, but fortunately for America they were soon allowed to go about their business”.

Hooters’ casual beach-themed establishments feature music, sports on large flat screens, and a menu that features chicken wings, seafood, sandwiches, burgers and salads.

“Destination Resorts has proven success with many restaurants in Thailand, and we’re continuing to bolster our presence with the largest international Hooters and a new location in Bangkok,” says CEO Gary Murray.

  • Hooters Bangkok’s delightfully tacky launch party

Hooters Bangkok’s delightfully tacky launch party

Hooters, the long-admired American chain restaurant famous for tackiness and large-breasted female servers, opened its first Bangkok branch on Friday night.

“Damnnnnnnnn. Look at that thang!” was the emotion on most of the (mostly male) guests who showed up at the Four Points by Sheraton hotel to get their first taste of Hooters magic.

Of courses, they totally lost their cool because of the variations menus and breast portion sizes available.

The very ambitious Hooters “job fair” was announced in June, and the Bangkok ladies who made the cut reportedly received training by original American Hooters gals on how to strut their stuff and serve fried chicken.

One of the trainers commented at the party that the Bangkok Hooters girls did a phenomenal job, despite the fact some ladies looked a bit annoyed as they had to squeeze through a packed crowd to serve the food

Besides local Hooters girls, some Euro models were hired to look hot and tell the guests that they didn’t work there.

The highlight of the night had to be an adorable cupid-shuffle dance from the waitresses, continuing Hooters’ wonderful tradition of family friendliness.

  • Hooters Bangkok to open this month

Hooters Bangkok to open this month

Hooters Bangkok opens its doors this week on Sukhumvit Soi 15, kickstarting a THB100 million (US$2.8 million) marketing campaign to raise brand awareness in the country.

The Hooters Thailand franchise was secured by Destination Resorts, the company behind DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Phuket at Surin Beach, DusitD2 Phuket Resort, Sri Racha International Golf at Sri Racha Hills, Hard Rock Café Phuket at Patong Beach, Novotel Phuket Karon Beach Resort & Spa, Novotel Hua Hin Cha Am Beach Resort & Spa and the Swissotel Resort Phuket.

It also operates the Four Points by Sheraton hotel on Bangkok’s Sukhumvit 15, where Hooters Bangkok is located, a 253 sqm, two storey bar to be officially opened on September 18.

Since securing the franchise, Destination Resorts has opened its first restaurant in the holiday resort of Phuket and has a third under construction on Pattaya’s Beach Rd, a massive 810 sqm complex with 50 high definition televisions screening sport, two bars and two outdoor areas.

Destination Resorts will open 30 Hooters restaurants across Southeast Asia in partnership with the American brand owner over five years. A fourth is planned for Samui next year.

  • Massive Hooters Pattaya to open August

Massive Hooters Pattaya to open August

Hooters will open the largest international Hooters location in Pattaya, Thailand, in August.

Hooters franchisee Destination Resorts, will open the 11,000 sqft, 564-seat Hooters Pattaya in the thriving tourism and nightlife destination as part of a 30 restaurant development agreement signed earlier this year to expand Hooters throughout Southeast Asia.

Hooters Pattaya is slated to open in early August on Beach Rd, directly across from Pattaya Beach.

The restaurant will feature two bars, 50 high-definition televisions and two outdoor patios where guests can relax and take in the scenic views. The “Wild West” themed restaurant will allow locals and tourists to experience great fun, delicious food, world-famous chicken wings and “Hooters Girl hospitality”.

“With the popularity of the Pattaya Beach area and its multicultural mix of locals, tourists and expats, we saw it as the ideal setting for one of the world’s largest Hooters,” said Gary Murray, CEO, Destination Resorts.

“We successfully introduced the Hooters dining concept to Thailand last year with Hooters Phuket, and look forward to expanding our footprint in the second most visited city in Thailand.”

Recruitment for more than 75 local Hooters Girls from Pattaya and neighboring cities has already begun.

“A hiring road tour is scheduled to pass through Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Korat, Pattaya and Udon Thani in search of fun, friendly and outgoing personalities to sport the iconic Orange Shorts and represent the global Hooters brand,” the companies said in a release.

Headquartered in Bangkok, Destination Resorts is the company behind DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Phuket at Surin Beach, DusitD2 Phuket Resort, Sri Racha International Golf at Sri Racha Hills, Hard Rock Café Phuket at Patong Beach, Novotel Phuket Karon Beach Resort & Spa, Novotel Hua Hin Cha Am Beach Resort & Spa, Swissotel Resort Phuket and Four Points by Sheraton Bangkok Sukhumvit 15.

  • Hooters in major Asian roll-out

    Hooters in major Asian roll-out

Hooters of America has signed an extensive development agreement to open 30 new Hooters QSR restaurant locations throughout Southeast Asia over the next six years.

After introducing the concept to Thailand with the opening of Hooters Phuket, international franchisee Destination Resorts has set sights on Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, as well as Hong Kong and Macau.

The initial focus will be on Hong Kong, Thailand and the Philippines.

Hooters is already well established through other partnerships in mainland China and Singapore.

“The moment the doors opened to Hooters Phuket we realised the tremendous opportunity to greatly broaden our efforts to develop the Hooters brand across Asia,” said Gary Murray, CEO, Destination Resorts Co.

“We pride ourselves on introducing fresh, exciting concepts to our guests, and the unparalleled Hooters dining experience fits that profile.”

Hooters, derided by many for its concept of attractive women in tight or skimpy clothing serving ordinary, primarily deep fried food to customers, appears to have exhausted its growth potential in its home market and has failed to capture customers in forays into other western market, such as Australia. Now it is eyeing Asia for growth, recognising locals are currently ready to embrace pretty much any US fast food concept or brand.

Less than a year after Hooters Girls first welcomed guests in Patong, Phuket, Destination Resorts says it will dedicate “significant capital and resources” to an expanded Hooters venture, continuing growth in Thailand and concentrating heavily on Hong Kong and the Philippines and on the other new countries.

“Destination Resorts Co. brings a wealth of hospitality and restaurant industry expertise, overseeing premier resorts and travel destinations in multiple Asian markets,” said Mark Whittle, senior VP of global development with Hooters of America.

“Following the warm welcome of Hooters Phuket, we’re confident our franchise partner will realise continued success as we work together to spread Hooters wings in additional markets.”

Headquartered in Bangkok, Destination Resorts is also behind DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Phuket t Surin Beach, DusitD2 Phuket Resort, Sri Racha International Golf at Sri Racha Hills, Hard Rock Café Phuket at Patong Beach, Novotel Phuket Karon Beach Resort & Spa, Novotel Hua Hin Cha Am Beach Resort & Spa, Swissotel Resort Phuket and Four Points by Sheraton Bangkok Sukhumvit 15.
