    Hyundai Motor will invest in Germany’s H2 Mobility network of hydrogen fuelling station operators, it said on Thursday, as it looks to support infrastructure for fuel cell-powered vehicles.

    A partner in the project since 2017, Hyundai Motor’s German subsidiary will become a seventh shareholder shortly, it said, having received approval from Germany’s cartel office.

    The South Korean company did not disclose financial details.

    It joins investors including France’s Total, Shell, OMV, industrial gas makers Linde and Air Liquide, and carmaker Daimler.

    “In Germany, a lot of money is flowing into the topic of hydrogen through the European Union Green Deal and national funding, and we believe that we are at the forefront,” said Ronald Grasman, vice president of fuel cell business development at Hyundai Motor Company.

    Hyundai, the biggest-selling Asian carmaker in Germany, had a 3.7% share of the market in January-July 2021 supplying a mix of conventional, electric and fuel-cell vehicles.

    Fuel cell cars are far from mass market production.

    But Hyundai, which is introducing fuel cell trucks in Switzerland, believes hydrogen technology could also play a bigger role in small vehicles further down the road.

    H2 Mobility operates 91 hydrogen filling stations and is expanding.

    H2 Mobility Managing Director Nikolas Iwan said the group was looking for anchor customers to bring big volumes to the stations, hoping this will allow them to reach break even within two to three years.

    “This is why Hyundai is so important. They have the lead when it comes to scaling effects, especially in the area of commercial vehicles,” he said.

    Hyundai, the biggest-selling Asian carmaker in Germany, had a 3.7% share of the market in January-July 2021 supplying a mix of conventional, electric and fuel-cell vehicles.

    Faurecia and Groupe Renault today announced their decision to collaborate on hydrogen storage systems for hydrogen light commercial vehicles. Starting at the end of 2021, Faurecia will supply hydrogen storage systems for a first fleet of light commercial vehicles. These systems will be developed and produced at its global centre of expertise in Bavans, France. As volumes, increase production will be extended to a new plant dedicated to hydrogen storage systems that Faurecia is building in Allenjoie, France.

    Mathias Miedreich, Executive Vice President of Faurecia Clean Mobility said, “Fuel cell electric vehicle technology is set to become significant in the powertrain mix by 2030, and as such Faurecia is dedicating important resources to accelerate its deployment.”

    This collaboration on hydrogen storage systems is embedded in Renault’s strategy to offer market-ready H2 solutions for light commercial vehicles and target over 30% share of this market in Europe.

    Toyota Establishes Research Institute In China To Study Hydrogen

    Japan’s Toyota Motor said on Sunday it was setting up a research institute in Beijing in partnership with Tsinghua University to study car technology using hydrogen power and other green technologies that could ease environmental problems in China. The initiative, outlined by Toyota’s President and Chief Executive Akio Toyoda in a speech at Tsinghua University, is part of the Japanese carmaker’s efforts to share more technology with China as it seeks to expand its business in the country by beefing up manufacturing capacity and distribution channels, a source close to Toyota said.

    The Tsinghua-Toyota Joint Research Institute will conduct research into cars and new technology to solve environmental problems in China, including reducing traffic accidents, Toyota said in a statement.The institute will “cooperate in research not only related to cars for Chinese consumers, but also in research related to active utilization of hydrogen energy that can help solve China’s energy problems,” the company said.

    The move dovetails with Toyota’s announcement this month that it would offer carmakers and suppliers around the world free access to nearly 24,000 patents for electric vehicle technologies.

    Executive Vice President Shigeki Terashi told Reuters earlier this month that the automaker intended to become a tier 2 supplier of hybrid systems and that it had already received enquiries from more than 50 companies.

    Later on Monday, Toyota said that it had started to supply fuel cell vehicle parts to Chinese commercial vehicle maker Foton and SinoHytec, without giving financial details of the deal. The company said in a statement that it hopes to cooperate with more companies in China to promote fuel cell vehicle penetration in China.

    South Korea’s Hyundai bet big on hydrogen technology

    South Korea’s largest carmaker Hyundai Motor is hoping to revive its flagging fortunes by building more hydrogen-powered cars, as part of the country’s bid to become a leader in hydrogen technology by 2040. Last October in the United States, the company launched Nexo, an SUV that goes 609km on a single charge, has no battery, and puts out nothing but water vapour from its exhaust. And in December, it announced it would spend US$6.7 billion from now till 2030 on hydrogen technology.

    But its commitment to hydrogen fuel cell-powered cars is confounding some experts even though they agree the carmaker, the fifth-largest in the world by sales but struggling in the Chinese and American markets, needs to keep innovating.

    Namuh Rhee, former managing director of Merrill Lynch and now a professor at Yonsei University in Seoul, said the focus on hydrogen cars was “questionable” because of the huge costs involved, while “virtually all other global car makers” had made big plans to produce battery-powered electric vehicles (EVs). The country also has a shortage of refilling stations for hydrogen vehicles in comparison to the growing number of charging stations for EVs.

    Figures in the car industry, such as Tesla CEO Elon Musk, had previously called hydrogen cars “mind-bogglingly stupid”, pointing out that developers were looking too far ahead at untested technology, even though the battery-powered solution to cleaner vehicles already existed.

    Hyundai’s plan, though, is aligned with President Moon Jae-in’s strategy to boost the local hydrogen economy. In a speech on January 17, he noted that a major part of the plan would involve ramping up the production of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles, which currently trail battery-powered electric vehicles in popularity.

    Moon promised laws would be modified to allow hydrogen production to thrive, while there would be subsidies to encourage demand for hydrogen-powered vehicles.

    He said the country had produced 1,824 hydrogen cars as of end-2018, with more than half being exported. This year, the number would rise to 4,000, with a goal of 1.8 million cars by 2030.

    The advantages of domestic hydrogen production and distribution, he said, was that it would ease South Korea’s heavy dependence on energy imports – which currently provide 95 per cent of the country’s energy needs.

    “If the country is able to be relatively energy self-sufficient through the hydrogen economy, it will be possible to steer our economic growth more [in a more stable way] and safeguard our energy security more steadfastly,” he said.

    Hyundai, a pillar of the South Korean economy and partially owned by the family that founded it, still needs to prove that hydrogen is the technology of the future, and that it is capable of reinventing itself.

    Last month, the carmaker’s executive vice-chairman Chung Euisun – who is the apparent heir to his father, the company chairman Chung Mong-koo – joined a coalition of CEOs lobbying for hydrogen to be a bigger part of the global energy mix.

    Chung Eui-sun, 48, is now a co-chair of the Hydrogen Council, which counts Chinese oil and gas enterprise Sinopec, American multinational 3M and German automotive firm Daimler among its members.

    At the same time, Hyundai, which commands only 4 per cent of the Chinese and American car markets – down from almost 10 per cent in both a decade earlier – is also building electric vehicles. The company had previously announced it would release 44 models of electric vehicles (EV) by 2025, and last month, the Indonesian government announced the carmaker would set up its first Southeast Asian factory there to build electric cars for both export and domestic use.

    Rhee pointed out Hyundai had been slow to make the transition to EVs and autonomous driving, while other analysts said the company was at least three years behind competitors like Volkswagen, which is set to make electric versions of all its vehicles by 2030, and General Motors, which will have 20 EV models out by 2020.

    To show its commitment to innovation though, the company recently got two vice-chairmen in charge of research and development, both aged 64, to step down in December. It then appointed Albert Biermann, who formerly headed BMW’s M division and created several iconic cars, to head R&D efforts. Other engineers from BMW have also crossed over to join Biermann.

    Seoul-based capital markets analyst Steve Chung, of investment group CLSA, said Hyundai had undergone “massive management reshuffling” with younger people taking control of major functions in the company.

    “Maybe it’s a bit late, but I say better late than never. That’s why the share price has been rebounding,” said Steve Chung, who is not related to the family that founded Hyundai. In 2018, Hyundai Motor’s stock nosedived from its high of over 260,000 Korean won in 2013, to below 95,000 won (US$85) last November. It is now at 129,500 won.

    Ghim Hyunjoon, a company representative, said Hyundai was making great strides in its “cooperation with various start-ups, academics [and the like] to lead the future mobility market”. The carmaker also owns a minority stake in the country’s second-largest car company, Kia Motors.

    Last month, Hyundai took home two top awards from the Detroit Auto Show for best car and best SUV. It also unveiled in Las Vegas the world’s first holographic navigation system, which projects images on to the windscreen to guide drivers through turns and alert them to dangers. The system was born out of a collaboration with Swiss-headquartered augmented reality company WayRay, suggesting the infamously closed-door carmaker is starting to embrace start-ups as it looks to the future.

    Despite its recent wins, the outlook for Hyundai is still challenging, as the younger Chung acknowledged in a New Year’s speech to staff last month. He is expected to soon formally succeed his father, who is 80 years old.

    Analysts suggest the global car market is shrinking. Ageing baby boomers in the US are making fewer new vehicle purchases, while ride-hailing is expected to reduce car ownership overall, according to an industry report from consulting firm Bain & Company.

    Elon Musk has taken his share of hits in the media for his Twitter rants and behavior that is just plain weird for a CEO. We don’t know how Tesla Inc. is going to fare now that competition from Jaguar, Audi and Mercedes is here or soon will be. If Tesla doesn’t make it because of mismanagement and misbehavior by Musk, and if the company goes down in flames like DeLorean, Bricklin and Tucker, there is at least one Musk legacy that is undeniably brilliant: Tesla’s nationwide network of Supercharger charging stations. Tesla’s Supercharger network, I think, is the template for automakers gearing up to launch fuel cell vehicles. Toyota, Honda, Hyundai and General Motors are on the cutting edge of fuel cell technology, with some vehicles already available for lease and new, more efficient fuel cell stacks — the component that creates electricity from gaseous hydrogen — on the way.

    Musk answered the chicken-and-egg question with electric vehicles by investing more than $1 billion in a nationwide charging network specifically for Tesla cars. He short-circuited drivers’ biggest fear of owning an EV: range anxiety.

    That same strategy will be necessary for fuel cell vehicles to have wide appeal. Fuel cells, you’ll recall, are EVs. But instead of storing electricity in a battery pack that weighs hundreds of pounds, electricity is produced from gaseous hydrogen stored on the vehicle under high pressure. A hydrogen fuel cell vehicle can be refilled in minutes, just like a gasoline- or diesel-powered vehicle — and the short time to refill the hydrogen tank is one of the key advantages fuel cell vehicles have over battery-powered EVs.

    California leads the nation in the number of fuel cell filling stations, many built by FirstElement Fuel Inc., a company headed by auto industry veteran Joel Ewanick. He agrees a Tesla-like nationwide network of hydrogen fueling stations could help reduce the time it will take for fuel cell vehicles to become economically viable to manufacture.

    “All the car companies are trying to find a path to [production of] 30,000 cars. That’s where you start to see real efficiencies in your production, parts and suppliers. Anything below that, it’s a challenge to make these cars at a reasonable price. We are getting to that tipping point in 2020 and 2021,” Ewanick said.

    Beijing city authority has allotted 11 more roads in Fangshan district for the testing of autonomous vehicles to push the speedy development of self-driving technology.

    But he also recognizes that automakers want to build cars, not the fueling infrastructure. And yet they may have no choice if they want to sell hydrogen fuel cell vehicles nationwide. Toyota and Honda have chipped in more than $20 million so far, helping FirstElement build 19 of 31 planned hydrogen fuel stations in California.

    Ewanick says costs are coming down — from between $2.2 million and $2.5 million per station — while the number of vehicles each station can handle is increasing. He sees the company eventually expanding beyond California, perhaps by building a hydrogen fuel filling station “bridge” across the country.

    “We don’t need the network that we have with gasoline stations,” he said. “We just need to make sure they (hydrogen filling stations) are in convenient locations to serve our customers.”

    The federal government under the Trump administration likely isn’t going to do much to help create a nationwide hydrogen fuel network, so it may be a project for automakers and refiners such as Shell — which is installing hydrogen pumps at some California stations — and GM.

    GM should take the lead here by creating an entity that brings together suppliers of hydrogen fueling equipment, companies such as FirstElement that build the stations, refiners that produce hydrogen and other car companies to fund and quickly roll out hydrogen stations in every major market.

    GM and Honda have reduced the size and cost of the fuel cell stack, and the electronics are proven. Hydrogen fuel cars will be part of the mix. The question now is what will automakers be willing to do to seed the technology and overcome customers’ doubt and fear over range. For that answer, all they need to do is look at Tesla’s Supercharger network. That’s how you introduce alternative fuel vehicles in a market.

    “As I have heard my entire career, automakers make cars and they don’t do infrastructure,” said Ewanick. “They don’t want to be in the business of building gas stations and roads and bridges. Their job is make cars and do a really good job of that.”

    If that doesn’t change, fuel cells might just remain in the tiniest of niches.
