    Singtel, StarHub and M1 must keep innovating to stay in the game

    Signs have not been good lately for Singtel, StarHub and M1, the country’s three large telecommunications companies. Technological innovations, as well as changes in regulations, have sent shock waves through the big three companies, and virtual mobile telcos such as MyRepublic, Zero1 and Circles.Life have also posed a threat to the larger players.

    But with new kid on the block, TPG Telcom, set to launch later this year, the question remains whether there is still a place for one more large telecommunications company in an already crowded market.

    The existing telcos say that since the country is small and has a mature mobile market with very high rates of penetration, perhaps three’s a company, but four would be a crowd.

    In other places such as Germany, Denmark and the UK there is consolidation of only three mobile network operator (MNO) providers. Indonesia, whose population of 250 million is huge, compared to Singapore’s 5 million, is also leaning toward consolidation.

    Three years ago, the  Info-communications Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) asked whether expanding mobile services in the country is a viable option. Today, opinions still are divided as to whether or not there is room in Singapore for a fourth telco.

    One concern is that tougher competition will lead to fewer revenues in the mobile sector, which would in turn discourage service innovation, and even investments as well.

    On the opposite side is the IDA, which has evolved into the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), says that there is space for telcos to innovate their services, as well as room for more competition in the market.

    When a new MNO enters the market, this may also spur existing ones to further invest in innovating their networks in order to stay competitive.

    TPG Telecom, which is based in Australia, is already making quite a splash in Singapore, with a special offer for seniors, an audience not often catered to by telcos. TPG is giving a fee mobile plan for people aged 65 and above, complete with a SIM card, 3GB of data and unlimited mobile calls.

    Other telcos are greeting TPG’s launch as a splash of cold water on their faces, to get them to innovate their strategies. The telco industry is marked by both competition and innovation, and companies have to work hard to keep up. Their strategies must remain both quick and agile to remain enticing to existing customers as they attract others.

    For example, telcos have been threatened by over the top (OTT) voice, text and messaging options that only require WiFi for consumers to make calls and send messages. This has meant that telcos can no longer rely on old revenue streams that depended on subscription plans, infrastructure and bandwidth, as consumers ceased to need them as much.

    Big players in the tech market such as Apple, Amazon and Google offer such OTT services merely using data connections, which removes the need for additional infrastructure.

    Industry experts predict that WhatsApp, Skype and different OTT applications will cause telcos the loss of around US$400 billion in revenue for this year alone.

    How then can telcos, which have invested millions on infrastructure, secure their future despite fewer returns on those investments, or else, face the possibility of growing redundant in the industry.

    Perhaps the bigger question here is not whether there is room in the country for yet another mobile telecommunications company, but to ask whether the existing companies are doing enough to innovate in order to maintain relevance in a quickly evolving industry.

    M1, IDA launch trial Wi-Fi service for public buses

    The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) and M1 have launched a trial Wi-Fi service for public buses.

    Commuters on selected SMRT Service 176 buses can now use Singapore’s first WiFi-On-The-Go service, as part of the heterogeneous network (HetNet) trials.

    The HetNet Trials are meant to validate advanced telecommunication technologies, and a network’s capabilities in providing pervasive and seamless connectivity in a real-life setting.

    Each connected bus is linked to M1’s 4G+ network through an intelligent in-vehicle unit that boosts the bandwidth available to the on-board wireless network.

    Commuters on the buses, a trunk route service linking Bukit Merah Interchange and Bukit Panjang Temporary Bus Park can go online by connecting to the “Wireless@SG” network on their smart devices. Commuters will be able to identify the two WiFi-enabled buses through on-board signages highlighting the service.

    M1’s carrier WiFi service will also be available on the buses by end-April. The M1WiFi service, with download speeds more than ten times faster than available through Wireless@SG, will seamlessly handover customers between M1’s mobile network and the WiFi-On-The-Go service before, during and after their journey, to enable them to able to enjoy activities such as streaming HD video content without interruption.

    In addition to passenger benefits, WiFi-On-The-Go can help business by enabling new applications. For instance, inbound tour operators can now provide tourists with WiFi on board their tour buses. Vehicle fleet operators can also use the enhanced connectivity to stream live video and collect other relevant information from the vehicle, as well as provide transactional services.

    “HetNet technological innovation is expected to bring about immediate and long term benefits for citizens. With the enhanced infrastructure, as a start, users in trial areas such as MRT stations and selected buses powered by M1, can now experience better coverage with seamless connectivity, IDA assistant CEO Khoong Hock Yun said.

    “Beyond the trials, we look forward to working closer with companies in the tech, engineering and R&D space to develop solutions that can meet pressing connectivity challenges.”

    IDA, SPRING Singapore & CapitaLand partner to boost last-mile delivery for retailers in $20m project

    The three parties have signed a Memorandum of Intent (MOI) to launch an In-Mall Distribution (IMD) trial expected to benefit 300 retailers.

    If successful, the model may be rolled out to other shopping malls owned or managed by the CapitaLand Group in Singapore.

    With two CapitaLand malls – Tampines Mall and Bedok Mall – part of the pilot project, the trial will provide useful insights into how to calibrate the logistics solution for wider implementation.

    The initiative falls under the Nationwide Urban Logistics Programme spearheaded by IDA and SPRING Singapore.

    The idea was first mooted in the Infocomm Media 2015 followed by a funding announcement of $20 million from IDA and SPRING Singapore to implement urban logistics in the retail sector.

    According to the IDA, if deployed nationwide, it could lead to an estimated reduction of trucks on the road by 25 per cent and a cut in waiting and queuing time for deliveries by 65 per cent. The aims is to enable trucks with less-than-full loads to consolidate and sort their goods in an offsite centre before delivering to malls.

    Subsequently, these goods can then be re-loaded and then delivered to their intended destinations on a single truck within the same day, reducing the number of trucks going to the same destination and improving truck load utilisation.

    Teresa Teow, head of retail management in Singapore for CapitaLand Mall Asia Limited, the manager of CMT malls, explained: “As the owner and manager of Singapore’s largest shopping mall network, we are constantly looking at ways to innovate and further improve our operations and shopping experience by leveraging technology and strategic partners.”

     

    Steve Leonard, executive deputy chairman of the IDA said, “Achieving the Smart Nation vision of Singapore will only be possible if government and industry work closely together, adopting new ideas and embracing new technologies.”

    Leonard added, “We know that the complexities and logistics of moving large amounts of goods in densely-populated areas is a big challenge. Together with our partners, we want to explore how analytics and robotics can be part of new ways to solve these challenges. It is imperative that the government and the industry not only work together, but keep looking forward to adopt new ideas and new tech in business.”
