Apple To Build Its First R&D Center in China

Apple plans to open its first research and development centre in China this year, the latest in a series of steps to bolster its presence in a vital region as sales slow down.

Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive, revealed the plans to increase investment in local R&D during a meeting this week with Zhang Gaoli, China’s vice premier.

The move comes after Apple reported that revenues fell one-third in the latest quarter in Greater China, where Apple faces growing competition from local smartphone makers such as Huawei and Oppo as well as tougher economic conditions.

The new R&D centre will be made up of both new and existing staff. Apple already has 9,000 staff in China, roughly half of whom work in its 42 retail stores. In the past four years, Apple has doubled the number of corporate offices in China to 45.

“We look forward to expanding our operations in China with a new research and development centre as we continue to grow our talented team here,” Apple said, without specifying the scale of staffing or financial investment in the effort.

“The centre will open later this year, bringing together our engineering and operations teams in China as we develop advanced technologies and services for our products, both for our customers in China and around the world,” Apple added.

Even as revenues slide, Apple is increasing its investment in future products and international expansion. Last month, the US tech group revealed a 26 per cent increase in its quarterly R&D spending to $2.6bn, a record 6 per cent of revenues. Its annual R&D spending is now approaching $10bn.

In May, Apple invested $1bn in Didi Chuxing, a Chinese car-hailing service — an unusual move for a company that has typically favoured much smaller deals. As well as providing a strategic partnership as a secretive Apple team works on developing its own car, the investment was widely seen as an attempt to build goodwill with the Chinese government after a series of setbacks in the region.

Earlier this year, Apple’s iTunes films and iBooks services were blocked in China as part of a wider crackdown on foreign content. Apple also lost a patent case in Beijing that threatened to block sales of the iPhone 6.

“The new centre is also aimed at strengthening relationships with local partners and universities as we work to support talent development across the country,” Apple said.

China has also become a growing focus for Apple’s environmental efforts as it pushes its supply chain partners to use more renewable energy. On Wednesday it said that Lens Technology, a glass manufacturer, would obtain 100 per cent of its electricity from wind power by the end of 2018 — the first Apple supplier to make such a commitment.

In last month’s earnings call Mr Cook stressed the “long-term opportunity” in China, where sales grew 55 per cent to $40bn during the first three quarters of Apple’s fiscal year. Revenues from its books and movies stores in China were “less than $1m” before they were blocked, he added.

  • Apple’s Latest iPhone to Hit UAE Retail Stores in September?

Apple’s Latest iPhone to Hit UAE Retail Stores in September?

Great news for gadget freaks in the UAE this month! A report in gulfnews.com recently stated that Apple’s next-generation phone could be launched today in the UAE!

The tech giant is to unveil alongside Apple TV its latest handset, which will likely be called iPhone 6s or iPhone7, during a special press briefing in San Francisco, California on Wednesday. If the launch goes ahead, the rumour mill has it that the new phone will hit the retail stores by September 18.

The first few countries that are likely to get their hands on the new product include the United States, Australia, Canada, France, Hong Kong, Japan, United Kingdom and Singapore.

Though retailers in the UAE have not confirmed the release date,  Nicolai Solling, director of technology services at Help AG, said that if there’s going to be a product announcement, UAE consumers won’t have to wait very long.

Apple is known to make big product announcements during the month of September, with the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 5s and 5c introduced in September last year. The tech giant has distributed invitations to the media for an event on Wednesday, with the now famous tagline “Hey Siri, give us a hint”.

  • Apple underwhelms with ‘catch-up’ iPhone 6

Apple underwhelms with ‘catch-up’ iPhone 6

Apple CEO Tim Cook said the new iPhone 6 models unveiled overnight might look the same, but the difference is under the cover.

He’ll be hoping Apple fans take the hint – because on the face of it, the new model released is underwhelming. There was none of the groundbreaking innovation of previous model launches, such as the introduction of Siri, the virtual assistant you can talk to, or anything especially visual, such as new look screens or shape design.

The new model – as widely predicted – includes a multi-touch interface which senses the pressure with which it is being touched to create different responses.

The phones feature Retina displays covered in the “strongest glass on any smartphone” and a new generation aluminium case using “the same alloy used in the aerospace industry” and in different colours, which now include rose gold.

The camera has been “upgraded” to 12 megapixels, which is still a specification considerably less than handsets from rival manufacturers which sell for a fraction of the cost of an iPhone.

Inside the case is a new “Apple-designed A9 chip described as “the most advanced chip ever in a smartphone, delivering faster performance and great battery life”.

“The only thing that has changed with iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus is everything — 3D Touch lets users interact with iPhone in entirely new and fun ways, and the innovative Live Photos brings your pictures to life,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior VP of worldwide marketing. “These are the most advanced iPhones ever, with 7000 series aluminum, ion-strengthened glass, the new 64-bit A9 chip, 12-megapixel iSight and 5-megapixel FaceTime HD cameras, faster Touch ID, LTE and Wi-Fi. Customers are going to love them.”

We’ll await the verdicts from reviewers in coming weeks. In the meantime, the superficial statistics, such as camera and processor, appear very much to be catching up to rival handsets like the latest Samsung Galaxy and HTC One models – rather than a leapfrog in technology or performance.

In Asia-Pacific, the new models will be available in Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand and Singapore from September 25.

    Optus boosted by customer growth

New customers spending more on data have boosted revenue for Optus, but the telco continues to be outpaced by Telstra.

Australia’s second largest telco achieved a 6 percent rise in revenue in the three months to December, as it added 100,000 mobile customers to 8.25 million.

Data revenue rose 12 percent, as more customers moved to the company’s 4G network and new handsets, including the iPhone 6, were released.
