Jordan launches first women’s apparel capsule collection

Athletic apparel fashion label Jordan has launched a new capsule collection prominently featuring a flight suit design.

The function-first jumpsuit design with a streetwear edge signals the collection’s style ethos; delivering a selection of new everyday items specifically for women, with “a defiant transformation of archetypical clothing”.

Jordan Women’s Flight Utility Apparel Capsule Collection is available at Hong Kong’s Her boutique with fashion and gastronomy, complemented by Jordan-themed drinks and treats from the Her cafe, through to March 31.

The new flight suit, along with other items in the collection, takes inspiration from the Wings lines of Michael Jordan’s mid-80s flight.

“The capsule collection is a beautiful blend of streetwear utility with fashion influence and is underpinned by the authenticity of the brand’s heritage,” said Jordan Women’s Apparel design director Michelle Walter. “For example, traditional elements from MJ’s original flight suit are brought to life within the Bomber Jacket’s silhouette and featured Wings lines.”

All pieces in the inclusive capsule are designed to serve a range of body types, and most are also available in Asian fit and plus sizing.

Clot x Air Jordan XIII Low release date revealed

International brand and retailer CLOT’s Air Jordan XIII pays tribute to co-founder and creative director Edison Chen’s youth, which he spent between Canada and Hong Kong. Chen chose to work on the Air Jordan XIII because it was his go-to during his high school basketball career — and remains a favorite shoe.

To honor his Chinese heritage, he drew from a recent visit to Lintong county, Shaanxi province, where the Terracotta Warriors statues have remained for more than 2,000 years.

To replicate the oxidation of that terracotta earthenware, the CLOT x Air Jordan XIII Low uses a Sepia Stone, Terra Blush and Canteen colorway.

The design of the padded upper mirrors the armor worn by the Terracotta Warriors.

Subtle nods to MJ come through in the side panel, where dots on each tile appear in twos and threes. To finish it off, metallic gold CLOT and Jordan Brand logos appear on the tongue, heel and sole.

The CLOT x Air Jordan XIII Low releases exclusively at Innersect Shanghai, China, on December 8, followed by a global release December 13 at Juice Stores.

    Nike appointed two new leaders

Nike Inc is bolstering its executive management with its two latest hires. The U.S. sports giant has announced earlier in the month that Carl Grebert, currently the Vice-President, General Manager of the Global Jordan Brand, will become the company’s new Vice-President, General Manager of its Asia Pacific and Latin America (APLA) geography, effective December 1.

In his prior role at Jordan, Grebert worked for 18 months and drove the basketball brand’s global product engines and marketing, merchandising, and oversaw Jordan category management teams for the brand, pushing the business into a position for the next phase of growth.

Before Jordan, Grebert headed up the Japan geography team as Vice-President, General Manager of Nike Japan.

He has also held senior roles in marketing and ran territory business units in Europe.

Grebert replaces Ann Hebert, who will become the new Vice-President, Global Sales, after working as APLA head for two and a half years.

Hebert will be responsible for driving Nike’s global sales teams and partnering with Nike Direct “to build a seamless Nike network that will continue to elevate service to consumers around the world,” said Nike in a statement.

She replaces Mike Best, who has decided to retire after a nearly 30-year career stint at Nike.

Likewise, Hebert has been at Nike for 23 years and served in various leadership roles.

Prior to her APLA role, the Nike veteran was VP of the Global Nike Direct Partner business and led the North America sales team as the VP, North America Sales.

Both new management roles will report to Elliott Hill, Nike’s President of Consumer and Marketplace.

  • Nike sales saved by basketball sector

Nike sales saved by basketball sector

A rebound in basketball drove strong Nike sales and profit growth in the last quarter.

The US-headquartered sports giant has reported a profit rise of 7.3 per cent to US$842 million in the three months to November 30, with sales up 6.4 per cent, to $8.18 billion. Excluding the impact of currency rates, profit rose 8 per cent.

Sales in the basketball category, which includes its Jordan brand, accounted for 15 per cent of wholesale revenue in 2016. And even greater growth is expected in the next quarter after the brand lost momentum in the core category in previous periods.

“We’re seeing incredible momentum in basketball,” said Trevor Edwards, president of Nike Brand. “To be clear, basketball is back.”

Sales in China rose 12 per cent, and in the US by 3 per cent.

Nike has moved to drive more direct sales, improved its online sales apps and adjusted pricing on some of its marquee products, including basketball shoes.

  • K-beauty spreads worldwide

    K-beauty spreads worldwide

The ‘K-beauty’ market is expanding its sphere of influence beyond Asia, and reaching out to other global markets.

According to Aju News, a Korean newspaper, Korean cosmetics brands are exploring new markets worldwide. As the global interest in K-pop and K-dramas is rising, women all over the world are now looking at K-cosmetics.

Amore Pacific has been eyeing the international market since the 1990s. After establishing factories in France and China, the company continued to expand its influence worldwide, with products now being sold in the U.S., Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Canada, Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore, Myanmar, and Japan, generating global sales of 1.26 trillion won.

Able C&C’s cosmetics brand Missha is following the lead, spreading K-beauty all over the world. Missha stores can now be found in Brazil, Germany, Mexico, Venezuela, Turkey and Spain. The Brazilian market in particular is expected to generate strong sales growth, as reports show that the local cosmetics market is the fourth largest in the world.

LG Household & Health Care’s The Face Shop is focusing on the Middle Eastern market, opening 55 stores in five countries – Jordan, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Oman and Armenia.

Cosmetics brands are using a number of different marketing strategies to aggressively target overseas markets.

In areas where natural ingredients and safety are important, such as Europe and the US, businesses are attracting customers with their ‘natural’ brands. Some brands promote elements of Korean tradition to attract western consumers. Many are ‘blending in’ with the locals through collaboration with local businesses.

To boost overseas expansion, the Korea Trade Promotion Corporation (Kotra) is taking steps to boost sales of Korean cosmetics through American and Chinese online shopping sites.

Kotra will host a ‘K-beauty summit’ to help Korean cosmetics brands export their products. The agency’s ‘online export incubating program’ will be introduced, and is expected to help businesses sell their products through Amazon.

Kotra is also seeking to secure new trading opportunities in China in collaboration with the online shopping site TaoBao, operated by Chinese eCommerce behemoth Alibaba. The two parties plan to host a K-beauty expo in China during the first half of the year.

    Innisfree store in Shanghi

The cooperation with TaoBao is only the start, as Kotra is also planning to work with other online shopping portals such as JD.com.

Officials at Kotra emphasise the importance of making inroads in the American and Chinese markets to prolong the popularity of the K-beauty trend. They expect to draw the attention of young consumers who are sensitive to fashion and style trends and familiar with online shopping.

  • Lama Hourani opens Shanghai boutique

    Lama Hourani opens Shanghai boutique

Jordanian jeweller Lama Hourani has opened an exclusive boutique in Shanghai.

But it’s been positioned as so exclusive, customers cannot enter without a prior appointment.

Lama Hourani’s exquisite silver and gold jewellery creations are creating a stir in Asia, underpinning her rising fame as a celebrity designer in Asia. Her creations are worn by royalty, the glitterazzi and even the Pope.

The new store is on the ground floor of a historic house in Shanghai’s French Concession. Its decor is like something from a book celebrating Arabian design: gold and marble plinths, deep blue carpet, black and white images on the walls depicting minorities, gold framed mirrors.

“I opened [the boutique] because people in China were just so curious…The handmade aspect is special, and it’s a major plus for me to have a proper presence here.”

Hourani these days lives in Shanghai so it is no surprise she chose the vibrant, modern city for her first retail presence. But she is also a regular visitor to Hong Kong, presenting exclusive curations of her designs to customers – again by appointment only.

“My clients are from all over the world and are usually independent, self-established, culturally curious women… China has so much of that,” she said in a recent interview.

“If you are talking about demographics, those who are well-travelled, the crème de la crème, they all want to wear a statement piece that says something, rather than something that makes them belong somewhere. A lot of customers in China are beyond that first stage.”

In Hong Kong, Lama Hourani’s luxury jewellery is sold through Joyce and the website Plukka.com – as well as her own website.

Having established a solid reputation in jewellery, Hourani says her next focus is to expand the brand into other categories: homewares is an obvious first extension.

  • LG Electronics opens Middle East stores

LG Electronics opens Middle East stores

South Korea’s LG Electronics is making a strong push into the Middle East, opening premium brand shops in the area.

The company is deliberately positioning its brand at the higher end of the market to differentiate it from lower cost brands.

LG says it has opened a premium brand shop in Jordan on Mecca Street, the premium home electronics business district. The shop is the third premium brand outlet to open in the region this year after Tehran in Iran and Beirut in Lebanon.

The Jordan store is the largest of the brand’s shops in the area. The exterior of the store is made of glass, allowing potential customers to look inside. A video pillar that shows a moving image on an LED screen is set on the outside of the building.

The latest premium products from LG electronics, such as a 65-inch ultra all-red TV, 105-inch curved surface ultra HD TV, double magic space refrigerator, and premium smartphones are exhibited. Consumers can actually use the devices and learn about their features in the convenience room.

LG Electronics is planning to expand its premium brand shops to other major countries in Africa and the Middle East.

“We will strengthen our leadership in the premium market through the premium brand shops that maximise convenience in living,” a company spokesman said.
