Singapore-headquartered multi-dining concept food and beverage operator Jumbo Seafood has opened its first franchised seafood restaurant in Bangkok. The 9500sqft venue is the group’s fifth franchised location worldwide, with other outlets established in Fuzhou, Ho Chi Minh City, Taipei and Taichung. There are now 16 Jumbo seafood restaurants across Asia. The new Bangkok restaurant is operated by C J Seafood Co under a 10 year term at the IconSiam mega-development complex.

Jumbo’s CEO and executive director Ang Kiam Meng said: “Having a presence in Bangkok allows us to bring our signature Singapore heritage cuisine to yet another Asian destination.”

Jumbo released its unaudited end-of-year financial report at the end of September, showing an increase in revenue by 5.5 per cent compared to last year’s results. Revenue from operations in Singapore increased by SG$2.1 million (US$1.53 million) over the period, a figure dwarfed by the group’s $5.8 million ($4.2 million) increase out of Mainland China.

Jumbo’s reported gross profit hit $96 million ($69.9 million) this financial year, up 4.4 per cent from $91.9 million ($66.9 million) in last year. Profit attributable to owners of the company, however, decreased by 23.8 per cent ($3.5 million/$2.55 million) to $11 million ($8 million) this year.

Restaurant operator Jumbo Seafood has opened its first franchise in Mainland China, in the city of Fuzhou.

The move signals the onset of a period of Asian expansion for the brand, which has announced plans to open five to six new franchise outlets each year, targeting Shenzhen, other mainland cities, South Korea, Hong Kong, Macau and Indonesia.

The new 13,000sqft venue at the Dongbai Centre is Jumbo’s fourth franchised Jumbo Seafood restaurant since last year, and follows the recent opening of Jumbo Seafood in Taichung City.

Other targets for immediate expansion include Thailand and Singapore. A spokesperson for the brand noted:

“We project that Jumbo would add two new Jumbo Seafood outlets in Singapore – one Jumbo Premium Seafood outlet in Ion Orchard shopping mall and another potentially in the upcoming Jewel Changi – and one new Chui Huay Lim Teochew Cuisine outlet over the next 12 months.”

Jumbo operates 15 Jumbo Seafood restaurants across Asia.

Restaurant group Jumbo Seafood has reported a full-year net profit of S$15.7 million (US$11 million) – up 17.9 per cent from the previous year.

Overall group revenue grew 11.4 per cent to S$136.8 million, attributed mainly to revenue contributions from its new seafood outlets in Shanghai as well as an overall increase in revenue from its other restaurants.

Jumbo Seafood executive chairperson/CEO Ang Kiam Meng says the group managed to increase yields despite the ongoing challenges of the industry.

“We look forward to further improving our financial performance by streamlining our operations to raise productivity and efficiency while lowering operating costs.”

In October, Jumbo opened its fifth Ng Ah Sio Bak Kut Teh (pork ribs soup) outlet in Singapore.

Jumbo is a multi-concept dining and F&B group with a network spanning Singapore, China and Japan. It also provides catering services, and in Singapore sells packaged sauces and spice mixes.
