Global exclusive Kiehl’s Lunar New Year store launched at Changi Airport

New York skincare brand Kiehl’s has launched one of its largest-yet airport pop-up stores in the region, at Singapore’s Changi Airport.

The global-exclusive Kiehl’s Lunar New Year store at Terminal 3 was formally opened in partnership with the airport’s beauty-products concessionaire The Shilla Duty-Free and will trade until February 9.

At Friday’s launch, popular Chinese actor, singer and model, Dylan Wang, best known for his appearances in Chinese television series Meteor Garden, made a guest appearance, greeting 35 young fans from across Asia who had won a contest to attend the event and wowing KOLs from Mainland China.

The pop-up store artwork was created by Australian artist Eirian Chapman and features a mascot Rock-it the Rat traveling through a cinematic New York to the garden city of Singapore. Chapman also designed Year-of-the-Rat labels for three of Kiehl’s’ most-popular products, the Ultra Facial Cream, Avocado Eye Cream, and Calendula Herbal Extract Alcohol-Free Toner, sold in a travel-exclusive boxed set. Playing on the theme of the mischievous rat lighting up the sky and the year, Chapman also illustrated a Rat on a firecracker she has ‘set alight’.

More than a just a large, high-profile store, the Kiehl’s Lunar New Year pop up features an interactive game where visitors can win prizes for tapping the rat as it pops up on a digital screen, an onsite calligrapher drawing Chinese characters and customizable messages on souvenir fans, and Instagrammable spots, including a Singaporean rickshaw.

On an interactive screen, visitors can write New Year blessings on a rocket graphic, then decorate it with their choice of colors and stickers, before virtually blasting it off into the sky, to be shared with friends via email.

    Cellophane-free packaging

Sustainability issues and the Kiehl’s commitment to the environment were also highlighted at Friday’s event. Petrina Kho, GM of Kiehl’s Travel Retail Asia Pacific, revealed the brand has eliminated all cellophane wrapping of its products as part of a commitment to reducing its environmental footprint.

The company also presented a cheque for US$30,000 to Singaporean charity the Jane Goodall Institute which supports student-initiated activities under its Roots & Shoots program, encouraging and empowers youth to help solve human, animal welfare, and environmental problems in their communities. The funds will allow local youngsters to plant 800 saplings and monitor their growth and wellbeing over three years.

“I am very proud that we continue to successfully engage customers in an evolving retail landscape while supporting a meaningful cause that gives back to the community,” said Kho.

Jeff Lee, MD of The Shilla Duty-Free Singapore, says the Kiehl’s pop up helps his company create unique shopping experiences to excite airport travelers. “Working closely together with Kiehl’s Travel Retail Asia Pacific and Changi Airport Group, we strive to push the boundaries in delivering exceptional customer-centric retail experiences.”

Teo Chew Hoon, group senior VP of airside concessions at Changi Airport Group said the Kiehl’s pop up kicked off Lunar New Year festivities for Changi Airport Group. “Travellers can engage in fun and memorable experiences at the interactive space, while shopping for the perfect gifts for their friends and families.”

Kiehl’s Seoul pop up exhibition uses digital engagement to share Christmas cheer

A three-day Kiehl’s Seoul pop-up store was unveiled on Saturday, drawing several of South Korea’s most famous KoLs and incorporating multiple digital touchpoints and VR.

For the first time, Shinsegae Duty-Free allowed a single brand to take over the entire center court on the 10th floor of its Myeongdong department store, the hub of its downtown duty-free retail space. Kiehl’s Travel Retail Asia Pacific created multiple installations around the golden mirror carousel in the center of the floor, the highlight a real snowmobile where guests could don a virtual-reality headset and speed through the streets of downtown New York City.

The pop-up store was opened by popular K-pop R&B star Eric Nam and Kiehl’s Travel Retail Asia Pacific GM Petrina Kho.

Two of South Korea’s most famous KoLs were also on hand:  Risa Bae and Ha Neul, both of whom boast more than 1 million followers on Instagram and spent more than an hour posing for selfies with fans.

The pop-up space was themed Make it Merrier with Kiehl’s and was designed to appeal to both children and adults. One of the installations allowed people to customize a children’s storybook and – by scanning a QR code – download it in digital form. Others included QR-based interactions where visitors could answer questions to redeem free samples of Kiehl’s products.

The pop up was topped off with a giant colorful animated 360-degree video wall on the balcony of the 11th floor, framing the centre court. Artwork for the pop up was created by Finnish graphic artist and illustrator Janine Rewell

Kiehl’s has built a reputation for sustainable practices and corporate social responsibility and this event reinforced that commitment. The company committed up to US$10,000 to the charity Room to Read, by donating $1 for every sale of 125ml Ultra Facial Cream Holiday Limited Edition between November 1 and December 31. The funds will be used to purchase books.

Dr Geetha Murali, Room to Read’s CEO, told guests at the launch the cash would be sufficient to fund reading programs for 200 children in developing countries.

“Room to Read’s mission is to create a world free of illiteracy and a safe place in schools for young girls to read and study.” The organization’s internal research shows that 80 percent of the children it has helped to date have graduated from school, compared with just 20 percent on average in the countries they work in.

Meanwhile, all the displays created for the pop up were made from sustainable wood and after they are disassembled this week, all the items will be donated to schools and charities for children to enjoy.

Kho said the pop up was designed with the spirit of “giving and sharing”.  It follows a successful series of Kiehl’s Loves promotions in Bangkok, Hainan, and Seoul earlier this year.

“Holiday is a joyous time of the year and Kiehl’s is delighted to push the boundaries of disruptive and engaging retail expressions with Shinsegae Duty-Free through our immersive popup,” she said.

Hong Seok Ho, merchandising division senior VP at Shinsegae Duty-Free, said the partnership with Kiehl’s was part of the retailer’s mission to constantly deliver “unique and inspiring retail experiences” for customers.

New York skincare brand Kiehl’s has held the fifth installment of its global “Kiehl’s Loves Adventure” campaign with a new pop-up in China’s Hainan.

The immersive Kiehl’s Hainan pop-up store, which remained open in Sanya International Duty-Free Shopping Complex during September, incorporated designs by visual artist Simone Massoni that conveyed the essence of the host city and the hearts of travelers, drawing inspiration from the lush greenery and features defining Sanya.

The pop-up was launched with appearances by popular Chinese boy band singer Wang Zi Yi and TV sweetheart Song Yan Fei, who tested the brand’s Calendula range on stage with fans. The store featured an Instagrammable motorbike installation set against a tropical backdrop for posing in the saddle, while a colossal Calendula Toner bottle housing a “Calendulab” presented an interactive experience tunnel for all visitors to explore.

A VR experience at the Kiehl’s Hainan pop up allowed visitors to immerse themselves in a game to hunt down Kiehl’s products in a tropical forest. The traditional Kiehl’s apothecary made an appearance beneath a glider plane.

In an effort to mitigate the impct on climate change caused by carbon created during travel, Kiehl’s is now collaborating with Pur Project by investing US$1 from every purchase of the brand’s Ultra Facial Cream 125ml bought before October 31 in an agroforestry program.

Visitors who upload images from the pop-up to their social media can redeem a special cosmetics product. Other product samples and a skin analysis are available for customers browsing the store.

Kiehl’s has also designed an AR game that can be used at its regular stores after the pop-up closes, which will be playable until June 30. The game has collected 8000 registrations over the course of the campaign.
