Kipling releases a fresh collection with Chinese designer Angel Chen

Fashion brand Kipling has released a collaboration with contemporary Chinese designer Angel Chen.

The embroidery designs constitute what the brand describes a fresh approach to some of Kipling’s classic bag silhouettes, presenting its Fall/Winter “Live. Light” collection to consumers.

Chen has brought her East meets West aesthetic to the collection by borrowing the English phonemes “Do Re Mi” from the world of music and blending them with auspicious Chinese symbols. The result corresponds with the brand’s seasonal campaign of “Express Yourself with Music”.

“Live. Light to me represents vitality, which is indispensable in life,” said Chinese designer Angel Chen. “I think it can bring hope and happiness. That is why I have chosen ‘Do Re Mi’ in bright and vivid colours for the bag’s pattern, drawing my inspiration from the music scale.”

The collection comes in two distinct designs with different color combinations: a youthful pink-based design embroidered with crane and pine tree motifs and a denim-based design embroidered with a Chinese symbol in the form of a dragon.

Kipling opens Two New Stores in Singapore

Kipling Singapore is opening two concept stores this month – one at the new Jewel Changi shopping centre, the other at Ion Orchard. The openings come as the Belgian accessories brand refreshes its logo and shifts direction towards what it describes as “closer to its origins, one that is cool, gender inclusive, and authentic to Kipling’s roots”. In a statement, Kipling Singapore says refreshed bag designs will appeal to a larger target group – “millennials of both genders”.

Both new stores feature product zones with an ‘icon wall’ showing off Kipling’s most popular products and the Jewel Changi store includes a space displaying bags for travellers.

The Ion Orchard store features a ‘Make It Personal’ corner, where shoppers can customise their bags by adding charms, straps, key rings and stencils.

The Jewel Changi Kipling store opened last week, while the one at Ion Orchard will open on Friday (April 26).

Paying tribute to Kipling’s history, monkey elements will feature in all new stores globally, including a monkey mural painted in collaboration with local artists from each city.

“The monkey murals capture and tell their stories as a bridge between the city and customers,” said a Kipling Singapore spokesperson.

In Singapore, the brand collaborated with local artist and illustrator Tiffany Lovage for its mural at Jewel Changi Airport, and with popular local Singaporean art collective Tell Your Children at Ion Orchard.

Headquartered in Antwerp, Kipling is owned by US-listed VF Corporation, whose other brands include Eastpak, Jansport, Napapijri, Reef, Vans, The North Face, Lee, Wrangler, 7 For All Mankind and Timberland.

  • US investor buys into Mitra Adiperkasa

US investor buys into Mitra Adiperkasa

US private-equity company General Atlantic has made its first investment in Indonesia by buying into lifestyle retailer Mitra Adiperkasa (Map).

It has subscribed for Rp1.08 trillion (US$80.5 million) in bonds issued by Map which are convertible into shares in its F&B subsidiary Map Boga Adiperkasa (MBA), which runs Cold Stone Creamery, Godiva, Krispy Kreme, Pizza Express and Starbucks in Indonesia. It has more than 300 stores across 24 cities, and has more than doubled its store count over the past five years.

Map runs multi-channel retail concepts in Indonesia across a diversified portfolio of department stores, sportswear, specialty fashion, F&B, and lifestyle products. It has nearly 2000 retail stores.

“We believe the rapid rise in Indonesia’s middle and young working classes, the increase in this population’s disposable income, and the continued rural-to-urban migration represents an opportunity for us to strengthen our international food brands and cement our leadership position in the F&B market,” says Map CEO V.P.

Sharma. A portion of the investment money will be used to accelerate the F&B division’s network expansion.
“Indonesia’s domestic consumption comprises more than half of gross domestic product, and consumption patterns are increasingly shifting toward modern and aspirational lifestyle brands,” says General Atlantic Southeast Asia head Wai hoong Fock. “These secular trends position MBA’s food & beverage portfolio well for further expansion.”

    Regional commitment

The partnership, General Atlantic’s first investment in Indonesia, indicates its commitment to long-term market prospects in South-east Asia,” says Fock, who joined General Atlantic from CVC Capital Partners last year to lead its South-east Asia investing program. He is based in the firm’s Singapore office.
General Atlantic has 18 investment professionals in Asia, based in offices in Beijing, Hong Kong, Mumbai and Singapore. The firm opened its Singapore office in 2011, investing three years later in Singapore-based online mobile entertainment/communication Garena platform. It has also supported the growth of retail and F&B companies including lifestyle brand Tory Burch, luxury fashion brand Zimmermann, restaurant group Barteca Holdings, urban juice-bar concept Joe & The Juice, community accommodation marketplace AirBNB and transportation network company Uber.

Map has 1921 retail outlets in 68 cities throughout Indonesia. Its retail concepts include department stores (Debenhams, Galeries Lafayette, Seibu and Sogo), fashion and lifestyle (Crabtree & Evelyn, Kipling, Lacoste, Marks & Spencer, Massimo Dutti, Nautica, Sephora, Swarovski, Topman, Topshop and Zara), sports (Converse, Golf House, Oakley, Payless ShoeSource, Reebok, Rockport, Skechers, The Athlete’s Foot and The Sports Warehouse), F&B (Burger King, Cold Stone Creamery, Domino’s Pizza, Godiva, Krispy Kreme and Starbucks), kids (Kidz Station and Oshkosh B’Gosh) and bookstore Kinokuniya.

  • China to fuel VF Corporation brands

China to fuel VF Corporation brands

Multibrand fashion group VF Corporation sees Asia – and especially China – as the primary driver of growth in the years ahead.

VF Corporation brands include Vans, Kipling, Lee and The North Face.

The US-headquartered company says it is focused on expanding geographically to take advantage of its scale in markets around the world.

“The Asia Pacific (APAC) market, and in particular China, represent robust growth opportunities for VF, according to the company’s business lead,” the company revealed in an online newsletter.

“Asia Pacific is an important region for business development and remains a priority focus for the company,” said Aidan O’Meara, VF’s Asia Pacific president. “Our plan is to continue to focus on locally relevant innovation, further invest in demand creation and leverage our scale and capabilities as ‘One VF’ to fully capitalise on the growth opportunities and take market share.”

VF’s APAC business continues to expand. In 2015, currency neutral revenues in the region were up 10 per cent reaching US$1.2 billion.

China, which accounts for roughly half of APAC revenue, has seen consistent, strong growth from the country’s three largest brands: The North Face, Lee and Vans. In particular, Lee in China has experienced consistently strong growth over the years for the company, with product innovations driving recent success.

Denim leads the charge in China

VF brands currently maintain presences in more than 170 Chinese cities. And, that number is expected to increase in coming years.

“We see growth potential in a market with increasing affluence, a burgeoning middle class and increasing sophistication and demand for quality jeanswear,” O’Meara said.

The company sees a competitive edge in the market, particularly at Lee. VF launched Lee as the company’s first owned business in China in 1995.

“Statistics show that while jeans ownership is about eight pairs per person in North America,” O’Meara said. “In China, it is less than one pair per person, and if you look at India, there is still a lot of room as jeans ownership averages about three pairs per person.”

O’Meara noted there was a time when many jeans manufacturers rested on their laurels. However, as competition intensified, many consumers lost excitement with the products available on the market, opening a door for an innovative new product.

Lee saw this opportunity and put its research and development to the test. The resulting JadeFusion Denim has been a resounding success and garnered a Bronze Innovation Edison Award in the Materials Science category.

JadeFusion immediately accounted for 13 per cent of China’s denim sales in its first season on the market in the spring and summer of 2015.

“Lee exemplifies VF’s continuous innovation as one of the key strategies which differentiate us from our competitors,” O’Meara said.
