    Kraft Heinz lowers outlook as first-quarter sales fall

    The Kraft Heinz Company has reported lower global sales and profit for the first quarter, which management attributed to growing market pressures.

    For the quarter ended March 29, net sales fell 6.4 per cent to US$6 billion, while organic net sales slid 4.7 per cent.

    By region, net sales decreased 7 percent in North America, 4.4 per cent in international developed markets and 4.7 per cent in emerging markets.

    On the bottom line, operating income decreased 8.1 percent to $1.2 billion and net income fell 11 per cent to $714 million.

    “This quarter, we delivered results in line with our top line expectations despite growing market pressures,” said Kraft Heinz CEO Carlos Abrams-Rivera.

    “In today’s uncertain times, we are committed to controlling the controllables and making the necessary investments to deliver quality, taste, and value to our consumers through our beloved brands,” he added.

    The company has lowered its full-year outlook, expecting organic net sales to decrease 1.5-3.5 per cent, with sequential improvement recorded throughout each quarter.

    “We’re closely monitoring the potential impacts from macro-economic pressures such as tariffs and inflation, and we are dedicated to increasing investments to drive product and brand superiority,” said Abrams-Rivera.

    Kraft Heinz to take control of DTC brand Just Spices

    The Kraft Heinz Company KHC is committed to accelerating its international growth strategy focused on the Taste Elevation platform. In this regard, the company entered into an agreement to buy 85% stake in Germany-based Just Spices GmbH (“Just Spices”). The other 15% stake will be retained by Just Spices’ founders. Kraft Heinz expects to conclude the deal by the first quarter of 2022.

    Just Spices supplies various spice blends, pure spices, and quick-fix meal kits. Just Spices’ data-driven product innovation is designed to meet the needs of Gen Y and Gen Z consumers. The company’s modern analytics knowledge helps it recognize early consumer trend signals, promote product innovation, grasp customer sentiment along optimize customer targeting.

    Through this deal, Kraft Heinz expects to accelerate its growth strategy by ramping up its innovations and better-understanding consumers’ tastes and preferences. The buyout will enhance its direct-to-consumer operations and go-to-market expansion. Certainly, the combination of Just Spices’ innovation and brand power with Kraft Heinz’s team and scale bodes well.

    In September 2020, Kraft Heinz laid out a new operating model that incorporates five key elements, which include People with Purpose, Consumer Platforms, Ops Center, Partner Program, and Fuel Our Growth. The Consumer Platforms represents a portfolio of six consumer-driven platforms like Taste Elevation, Easy Meals Made Better as well as Real Food Snacking among others.

    Kraft Heinz gives away bulk ketchup to Melbourne small businesses

    Food and beverage company Kraft-Heinz is giving away 12-liter cartons of Heinz Tomato Ketchup to small business owners in Melbourne, including burger restaurants and other quick-service restaurants.

    As restrictions ease across Victoria, the company says it wants to help business owners affected by Covid-19 lockdowns get back on their feet with complimentary product deliveries. 

    “We know that the Melbourne restaurant industry has been hit hard by the latest lockdowns, with small, independent businesses particularly impacted,” said Marisa Jones, head of marketing foodservice ANZ at Kraft Heinz.

    “Whether you’re a burger bar, cafe owner or run another quick-service restaurant, we want to provide our foodservice community with an offer of assistance,” she said. 

    Eligible businesses are those located in the Melbourne metropolitan area, of 30 employees or less, privately owned and not part of a franchise group. The offer will be limited to one carton per business, who do not have to be an existing customer of Kraft Heinz.

    Business owners can apply for this offer from Kraft Heinz here until June 30 or until supplies last. Each delivery will consist of a carton of Heinz Tomato Ketchup containing three 4-litre bottles.

    DKSH Business Unit Consumer Goods, the leading partner for FMCG companies seeking to grow their business in Asia, is expanding its partnership with The Kraft Heinz Company, the fifth-largest food and beverage company in the world, to Malaysia.
