  • Lalamove Expands Horizons: Launches Into the Ride-Hailing Market

Lalamove Expands Horizons: Launches Into the Ride-Hailing Market

The exciting landscape of ride-hailing in Vietnam just got a little more dynamic. Lalamove, a Hong Kong-based logistics company, recently launched its ride-hailing services in Ho Chi Minh City, which are available for both motorbike and car rides (four- and seven-seaters) through the Lalamove app.

Nguyen Hai Dang, CEO of Lalamove Vietnam, expressed the company’s commitment to meeting consumer demand for more affordable travel options while simultaneously enhancing driver incomes. Although he remained tight-lipped about the fleet size, he did hint at plans to expand these services to other regions shortly.

Founded in Hong Kong in 2013, Lalamove has established a strong footprint across 14 markets, including Asia, Europe, and beyond. Since its entry into the Vietnamese market in 2017, the company has primarily focused on round-the-clock delivery services catering to both individuals and businesses, particularly in Ho Chi Minh City. Lalamove also boasts ride-hailing services in countries like Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines.

The growth potential in Vietnam’s ride-hailing and delivery markets is impressive. According to the “e-Conomy SEA 2024” report from Google, Temasek, and Bain & Company, the market is expected to soar from US$4 billion in 2024 to a whopping $9 billion by 2030. Furthermore, Mordor Intelligence predicts that the passenger transport market alone will grow from $1.05 billion this year to $2.56 billion by 2030.

The competitive landscape is rapidly evolving, with established players such as Grab, Xanh SM, be, and Tada jostling for market share. Xanh SM currently leads the ride-hailing segment with a commanding 39.85% market share, closely followed by Grab at 35.57%. As Mordor Intelligence points out, this growth can be attributed to factors such as rapid urbanization, the demand for convenient mobility solutions, and a tech-savvy younger generation, all amidst an influx of tourists in Vietnam.

Yet the competition is fierce. The Google report highlights how local companies are making significant strides, impacting even Gojek’s decision to exit Vietnam in September 2024. “Competition is expected to heat up, potentially transforming the industry and speeding up the transition to electric vehicles,” it notes.

Safety and affordability are vital in users’ service preferences, especially for motorbike rides, according to a survey by Q&Me, an online market research platform. Other factors that weigh in include respectful drivers, quick response times, ease of booking, and overall vehicle quality.

As Lalamove gears up to make waves in this vibrant market, the question arises: will it be smooth sailing or a bumpy ride ahead?

  • Hong Kong delivery platform Lalamove doubles growth in Vietnam

Hong Kong delivery platform Lalamove doubles growth in Vietnam

Hong Kong delivery platform Lalamove has claimed its year-on-year growth in Vietnam doubled in the first 11 months this year.

But it has not released figures for either year. Vietnam is a key and positive market, its CEO Paul Loo said during a recent visit to the country, and his company has seen opportunities in long-distance delivery grow.

    It now covers 40 localities.

“Inter-province delivery still accounts for a small ratio of our revenues but it is growing very fast,” Loo said.

The e-commerce boom has also contributed to the growth, he said.

Vietnam’s e-commerce market is estimated at $14 billion this year, up 14% from 2021, and is set to reach $32 billion in 2025, according to a report by Google, Temasek and Bain & Company.

The report said 85% of urban residents use online delivery services. Lalamove, which operates in over 350 cities in mainland China, has a presence in 11 global markets.

Since entering Vietnam in 2017 it has signed up over 100,000 drivers and 20,000 business partners.

Businesses are now reluctant to invest in their own vehicles and drivers due to fear of risks amid an uncertain future, which is why they rely on delivery services to transport their products, Loo said.

His company is investing in technology to improve the algorithm connecting vehicles and customers, he said.

With $700 million invested in online private transportation companies in the first half of this year, the sector is believed to have high competition.

There is great potential to increase market share as long as a company meets the needs of its customers and increases the value of its ecosystem, Loo added.

  • Lalamove partners with Klook in Hong Kong for food-delivery service

Lalamove partners with Klook in Hong Kong for food-delivery service

Hong Kong on-demand delivery startup Lalamove and travel-activities booking platform Klook have collaborated to offer a new express food-delivery service to support the local food-and-beverage industry.

Available on Klook as “A Guide to the Best Meal” until March 31, consumers can order from six partner restaurants with no location restrictions to then arrange a delivery time through Lalamove.

Klook has also introduced its ‘Grab n Go’ self pick-up takeaway service with its partners, available until May 31.

“We are now exploring more F&B experiences and looking into leisure activities, to diversify our activities spectrum and bring the most fantastic experiences to our customers,” said Percy Kwan, Klook’s marketing director for Hong Kong.

The latest government figures indicate a 14.3-per-cent year-on-year drop in fourth-quarter Hong Kong restaurant receipts. The partnership between the two local unicorns aims to help food establishments open up new sales and promotional channels by offering consumers convenience along with discounts and food packages.

As citizens opt to stay-in and employees work from home during the coronavirus crisis, a dramatic surge in online food deliveries has created new business opportunities for other local players as well, including Foodpanda, which has launched a 15-minute express-delivery service.

  • Competition heats up in third-party merchandise, food delivery market

Competition heats up in third-party merchandise, food delivery market

With huge demand driving Vietnam’s merchandise, food delivery market, investors are keen on a piece of the action.

After operating for a year in HCMC Lalamove, a logistics company headquartered in Hong-Kong specialising in same-day delivery and courier services, came to Hanoi Wednesday.

A day earlier Grab had released its food delivery app, GrabFood, after a period of testing.

The food delivery market looks extremely lucrative, and businesses want to cash in, industry insiders said.

“By 2020 Vietnam will have over 50 million customers shopping online,” Phillippe Rambaud, head of Lalamove’s Hanoi market development division, said. “This will be a large market for on-demand delivery services.”

Nguyen Duc Loi, CEO of Lalamove Vietnam, said the firm aims to have 10,000 contracted drivers on a permanent basis.

Grab Vietnam CEO Jerry Lim claimed GrabFood’s growth has been very impressive, with the number of its contractors increasing eight-fold in just a month of testing in Hanoi.

“GrabFood is the next major step for Grab in becoming a super-app which meets all the essential needs of people’s daily lives,” he said.

“The way each individual service interconnects and complements each other allows us to build an ecosystem that delivers real benefits not only to our customers and drivers but also to our business partners and vendors,” Jerry Lim added.

Go Viet has launched Go Send as a complementary service, but also aims to develop it into a super-app like Grab. It also plans to launch a food delivery service later this year.

Last year Go Send delivered over 800,000 fashion products and handled 2.3 million food orders for 203,000 small-scale online vendors.

But despite their major success in the online delivery market, the three entrants have to face the difficulties that come when competing with established incumbents popular in the market such as Delivery Now (Foody), and Vietnammm.

Besides, many of their drivers are reluctant to make advance payments to vendors and take on the risk of wrong delivery and customers not accepting goods.

Lalamove for instance has a policy of having drivers make advance payments for food/goods of up to VND3 million ($130.4) in HCMC and VND2 million ($86.95) in Hanoi.

Many vendors still do not focus on delivery through third party applications as an important income stream.

A representative of a milk tea chain in Hanoi told VnExpress that revenues still come mainly from direct sales and phone orders as well as the chain’s own digital app.

Its response times are still much faster than using third party apps, he said.

As more and more providers of delivery services emerge, he believed the most important factors vendors would look for are effective support systems and prices.

The intense competition means consumers will benefit increasingly from the variety of choices and the discounts and improvements in service competitors constantly make to gain market share.

Companies like Grab, Go Viet and Lalamove uniformly claim competition is good for the market, consumers and the businesses themselves.

One of them said the Vietnamese market would see even more competitors in future.

Analysts said this boom would soon spark a struggle between digital delivery platforms and traditional services just like the ongoing between Uber and Grab and traditional cabs.

Do Xuan Quang, deputy head of Vietnam Logistics Business Association, said Vietnam was the fastest growing e-commerce market in Southeast Asia, and along with the strong growth of the logistics industry at 15-20 percent, a similar movement in the delivery market is not surprising.

In 5-10 years, the delivery market in Vietnam will be valued at around $10 billion, he said.

U.K.-based market research firm EuroMonitor International values the food delivery market in Vietnam at around $33 million this year and at more than $38 million in 2020.

It also puts the annual growth rate of the market at 11 percent.

Burger King is the first fast-food burger restaurant chain to be added to the Lalamove delivery service and according to Chanon Klahan, Managing Director of Lalamove Thailand, this represents the delivery app’s reputation and focus on expansion. “To be chosen to join forces with such a successful household name as Burger King is a true sign of confidence in what we can deliver business-wise and of course burger-wise! It also shows Lalamove’s focus on building

strong partnerships as we grow. With our food-delivery network of drivers, we can definitely help stimulate demand as Burger King continues to expand into new delivery locations.”

In October 2017, Lalamove announced its own plans for global expansion too, by setting its sights on a presence in more than 100 cities across Asia after securing USD100M Series C funding.

Prapat ‘Patrick’ Siangjan, General Manager at Burger (Thailand) Limited says, “Burger King has seen an opportunity to grow its customer base substantially. With the addition of an online food ordering channel, which is very popular today, Burger King can greatly expand its delivery zones.”

“Thanks to Lalamove, which is Thailand’s leading same-day delivery and logistics provider, this collaboration will enable us to meet the needs of our customers better than ever before. By steadily launching new menu items to satisfy the appetites of our increasingly sophisticated customers, Burger King has seen the burger market continuously grow and receive consumer good response, especially in Q1 and Q3 of this year.”

“In 2018, we plan to increase the number of branches by another 15-20 more new outlets, each with an average investment of 25 million Baht, in Greater Bangkok and strategic provinces nationwide. With 16 branches already opened this year which brings the company to 89 outlets in total, (84 in Thailand and another 5 overseas), the Burger King brand is firmly established in this country. Consistently rolling out new restaurants in high potential locations enhances the brand and enables Burger King to extend its online delivery service zones to better meet growing consumer demand throughout Thailand. To celebrate this new partnership with Lalamove, Burger King is currently running a promotion offering free delivery with orders of 500 Baht or more from December 1st – 29th  2017.

Lalamove raises US$100m in series-C funding

Same-day delivery and logistics provider Lalamove has completed a US$100 million series-C funding round.

Aside from market expansion, the cash injection will also be used to invest into talent across the organisation, to add product features and to allow businesses more direct access to Lalamove’s fleet of drivers. One example is new integration technology to help SMEs include the company’s on-demand delivery as part of their own business services.

“In only a couple years, Lalamove’s standardisation, speed of service, lean operations and execution strategies have all drastically improved efficiency, lending to its excellent reputation across Asia.”

“Delivery of information takes seconds, but delivering physical goods is still relatively slow,” says Lalamove founder/CEO Shing Chow. “We want to change that, and want delivery to be measured in minutes, not days. Our average order-to-delivery time is very quick at 46 minutes, but we want to achieve even more.”

In July, the Hong Kong-based company added its 100th city for deliveries. It has more than 15 million users and is supported by more than 2 million drivers while continuing to expand across China and Southeast Asia.

  • Lalamove Attracts Thai Investor Confidence

    Lalamove Attracts Thai Investor Confidence

Hong Kong based on-demand delivery app Lalamove has successfully secured USD 10 million with the help of a new Thai investor, along with the company’s existing investors.

Thai financial and investment services company, Asia Plus Group Holdings has invested in Lalamove to drive the app delivery company to profitability and to complete Lalamove’s third-round funding within the last 18 months.  The latest cash injection brings Lalamove’s total funding up to USD 30 million.

The latest round of funding, attracting Thai investor Asia Plus Group Holdings, was led by existing investor MindWorks with participation from other existing investors including China’s Crystal Stream, Taiwan’s AppWorks and Hong Kong’s Aria Group.

Following Lalamove’ s recent partnership with LINE to launch LINE Man app, the funding success reveals the speed at which Lalamove is growing, as CEO Shing Chow expressed.

We began as a small start-up in Hong Kong working out of my apartment and have grown to 21 cities across Asia in the last two years.   When we began, we targeted lots of small businesses, but since then we have developed enterprise solutions to allow companies like Google, IKEA, and now LINE to make their delivery much faster and simpler”, said Chow.

Chow continued, “There is so much potential in making delivery more efficient as mobile internet is changing the way mobile assets are utilized.  This funding will be used to accelerate our leadership position and expansion efforts throughout China and other SEA countries.  It’s really a vote of confidence from our existing investors in our model and team.  It is our goal to be profitable this year, and it’s quite rare that you see a startup growing at our speed achieving that in less than three years. We are on track to deliver that.

The investment of Asia PlusGroup Holdings is the first time the Thai company has invested in a tech company, demonstrating the company’s belief in Lalamove.

Asia Plus Group Holdings’ CEO Dr. Kongkiat Opaswongkarn is positive about the investment. “The fact that we are investing in an app company for the first time really demonstrates how much we believe in the success of Lalamove and the e-logistics market in Thailand and within Southeast Asia. We have followed the expansion, strategy and successes of Lalamove and we like what we see and the great potential for profitability. We are excited to be helping to make that happen and to be part of that success story.”

The recent funding reveals investor confidence in our business plans, including Thai investor confidence. The app, logistics and mobile markets in the region are booming and Lalamove is at the forefront of that drive. Investors like Asia Plus Group Holdings are helping us steer where we want to go in the future, which is ultimately towards profitability.”

With the largest footprint across Asia, Lalamove is well positioned to capitalize on the growing trend of businesses looking to out-source their delivery needs.  Additionally, with more and more consumers looking to have their items delivered faster, Lalamove’ s average delivery time of 46 minutes is changing the landscape of intra-city delivery in Asia.

Lalamove can be downloaded for free from Google Play store and Apple Store.
