    Apple wants to make MacBook lids stronger and safer

    Ever since Apple silicon elevated the MacBook lineup from just pretty laptops to actually very powerful ones they have become a fan favorite of the industry. Since then the MacBook has seen marginal performance upgrades each year but Apple is now considering improving another aspect of its laptops: the lids.

    The MacBook Air and MacBook Pro make use of magnets in their lids to detect when it is closed or open and to keep it closed securely when it’s the former. Apple has filed a patent that alleges that these magnets produce stray magnetic fields even when not in use. The company says that these magnetic fields have the potential to damage nearby items and cited credit cards as possible victims.

    Apple then goes on to describe a new magnetic system that it wants to develop for its MacBook lineup. The new proposed magnetic array will in essence be an electromagnetic system. Apple says that the magnets can be, in very simple terms, switched on or off depending on whether they are needed at the moment.

    The biggest benefit seems to be that the magnetic array won’t produce stray magnetic fields when the MacBook lid is open. Apple may also be able to incorporate much stronger magnets to more reliably keep the lid closed without fear of damaging nearby items when the lid is open.

    The current magnetic array found in MacBook models is not really that strong that it would fry your credit card. So at first I thought this was a very unnecessary upgrade that Apple is thinking about. But the possibility of stronger magnets to keep the lid closed would definitely give the MacBook an even more premium feel.

    Many people who switch from a Windows laptop to a MacBook often mention how much more premium the latter feels. And while more expensive Windows laptops obviously feel more premium too, Apple has a reputation for classy products that it tries very hard to keep. As such the new proposed magnetic array could, in my opinion, give that reputation another slight boost.

    This is just a patent for now but it’s definitely a lot more easily achievable than so many of the more fantastical patents we see every day.

    LG Display will no longer supply Apple with LCD panels for certain iPhone models

    A new report from Korea’s The Elec says that LG Display will no longer be supplying LCD panels to Apple for the low-priced iPhone SE model. The company will continue to sell a small amount of OLED to Apple for the Apple iPhone 12 series. The factories that LG Display used to manufacture LCD for Apple will now make in-vehicle displays.

    The reason for LG Display’s decision to back out of producing LCD panels for Apple might have to do with its inability to make a profit from the business. Starting with last year’s iPhone 12 series, Apple’s new high-end models use OLED only which reduces the demand for LCD from the tech giant. LG Display reportedly stopped producing LCD panels for the iPhone during the third quarter of 2020 and by the end of the following quarter, it also stopped supplying other smartphone firms with LCD displays.

    Apple CEO Tim Cook has made the long trek to the pitcher’s mound where he has signaled to the bullpen for replacements to LG Display; Sharp and JDI will take over the job of supplying LCD screens for the iPhone. The factories that LG Display used to make LCD panels for Apple will now be used to manufacture low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) thin-film transistors (TFT). The latter is used for touchscreen displays used in vehicles.

    This year’s iPhone 13 Pro models are rumored to be equipped with ProMotion panels that update the screen 120 times per second (120Hz). At that rate, battery life takes a hit.

    But with low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) displays, the screen can adjust the refresh rate to run at 120Hz when needed to make an animation (such as the kind you’d find on mobile games) run and look smoother. At the same time, when the content on the display is more static (like when you’re viewing an email or text), the refresh rate changes to a lower number in order to prevent the phone’s battery from draining to quickly.

    At this point, it isn’t clear whether LG will be involved in the production of the LTPO panels alongside Samsung and BOE. The latter has tried to find a place among Apple’s display suppliers but has had problems with its output passing Apple’s Quality Control.

    Polestar 2 To Get Pixel LED Headlights

    Polestar 2 is already gunning to be a big player in the EV scene, come this winter solstice, the company revealed insights into the advanced lighting technology it’s using in the headlamps and the tail lights of the electric car.

    Reportedly, the Polestar 2 is fitted with Pixel LED headlights as a standard in the launch edition. These feature active high beam technology which allows drivers to leave their lights on high beam, to move forward in complete visibility, without blinding oncoming drivers or having to switch between modes.

    Each lamp on front of the compact EV has 84 individual LED pixels forming a matrix – within these clusters each LED is controlled individually both while driving and when the car is unlocked. This enables Polestar 2 drivers to leave the car on high beam while maneuvering in the dark to automatically shade when a car approaches without affecting the sight of other drivers.

    Per Polestar, this active high beam technology can accommodate up to five oncoming vehicles, working fully automatically. The front fog lights are also getting a twist – the LEDs in these lamps automatically activate at low speeds and light up on turning of the steering to further enhance visibility on curves and zig-zag stretches.

    At the rear, the Polestar 2 has an exciting lighting strip running across the trunk. The full-width wrap-around light bar comprises 288 LEDs featuring adaptive lighting – in the day the LEDs shine bright for optimal visibility and automatically dim by the night to prevent drivers in the tail from being dazzled.

    Interestingly, this Pixel LED tech is available in all markets where legislation allows – this excludes the States where regulations don’t permit such fancy lighting in cars. Polestar promises to push out the feature as an over-the-air (OTA) update, when and if the regulations change in the US and other markets where Polestar 2’s extravagant lighting show is not permitted currently.

    Independent premium Japanese grocery and lifestyle store, Guu San has opened its first store in Hong Kong.

    Guu San (Guu for valley, San for sanctuary) is an anchor of the new H Zentre commercial building located at Tsim Tsa Tsui. The 5000sqft store is designed to be a one-stop-shop where consumers can eat, shop, and rest – indoors and out.

    The space is divided into three zones: Sawaya, for non-packaged bulk-buy food following the zero waste trend, alongside snacks, beverages and fresh fruit and vegetables delivered from Japan.

    A ‘Kome Korner’ retails light meals made in-store such as omusubi (rice balls), soup, and other vegetable dishes paired with tea from Uji and Kyoto. A salad bar dubbed the ‘Salfee Bar’ will feature new salad varieties daily.

    The store also features an interactive LED art installation that changes scenes and animations according to the time of the day.

    The retailer says it sources high-quality foods ranging from local organic produce fresh from the market to curated snacks and tea delivered from Japan.

    The opening of Guu San follows the trend towards the Japanese retailing of groceries and food, which is showing strong momentum in Hong Kong. Don Don Donki recently expanded to its sixth flagship in the territory, Muji has opened its largest store, at Olympian City, and Yata department store has unveiled plans for a convenience store concept.

    Samsung Display workers asked to be quarantined in Vietnam

    Based on a statement released by the anti-COVID-19 task force of Vietnam’s Bac Giang province, a worker at the Samsung Display factory’s EQC-SI unit, age 25, had tested COVID-19 positive on Sunday.

    This led to the quarantine of all 44 people in that unit, while the factory, located in the province of Bac Ninh, and buses used for transporting workers have been additionally sprayed with disinfectants. Samsung has confirmed the case, while noting that Samsung Display’s production lines in the country have not been affected.

    Samsung is Vietnam’s largest foreign investor, and the world’s largest OLED screen manufacturer, holding over 90% of the entire market.

    Worldwide, most smartphone companies have been experiencing various setbacks due to the coronavirus pandemic. Phone sales hit a 10-year low in sales, as people are increasingly reluctant to update their older smartphones or purchase expensive new flagships due to the financial uncertainty the virus brings.

    We recently reported that an Apple supply partner in Taiwan prepared for decreased production in the upcoming months, while COVID-19 is also expected to delay the manufacturing processes of many other companies’ upcoming flagship and 5G smartphones.

    Several tech companies took measures towards supporting their customers and various affected groups around the world during the coronavirus pandemic. Apple is letting Apple Card users skip monthly payments without occurring interest, and is donating millions of dollars towards the fight against COVID-19. Samsung began offering door-to-door servicing of their Galaxy products in some regions, encouraging customers to remain safely at home. In addition, Google recently made its Premium Google Meet service free until the end of this year, in an effort to help businesses and schools remain connected.

    2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS Photos Leaked

    Official photographs of the new-generation Mercedes-Benz GLS SUV have been leaked ahead of its global debut at the 2019 New York Auto Show. The SUV will be manufactured at Mercedes’ plant in Alabama and will be launched in India sometime next year. As far as looks are concerned, the new GLS SUV sports a less aggressive design with fewer character lines. The front end still looks muscular with the creases on the bonnet and a new grille.

    The new GLS also comes with a set of new LED headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lamps. The bumper is also new and appears to come with large intakes on either end with an airdam and skid plate at the centre. What is also new is the fact that the new-gen SUV does not get the flared wheel arches from the outgoing model. While the silhouette remains more or less similar, the new-gen GLS gets cool looking slim LED tail-lamps, making for a classier look at the rear.

    From the sides, the SUV certainly looks bigger than ever with the additional claddings on the wheel arches, sportier alloy wheels and few other minor tweaks. Under the hood, the GLS is likely to get the same in-line six and V8 powertrains too which is seen in the S-Class including the GLS 600 which is likely to wear the ‘Maybach’ badge. Moreover, there will be also a 63 AMG version which will get a 4.0-litre, twin-turbo, V8 engine which is likely to belt out over 600 bhp.

    As far as interior is concerned, the overall design looks to be inspired by the GLE, with the same MBUX infotainment system, same steering wheel and the same design of the AC vents as well. We expect the GLS to be the true blue luxury barge as before and offer excellent comfort for third row passengers as well.

    Massimo Dutti Singapore has launched its sixth store, at Jewel Changi. The Inditex-owned fashion label’s almost 600sqm retail space features the brand’s newest design concept for the first time in Southeast Asia and following the opening of a similar outlet in Munich, Germany.

    Designed to look like a New York apartment, the new interior design layout expresses the natural evolution of the brand. The store concept is focused on lifestyle, offering a more enticing setting via the use of warm, high-quality materials such as wooden furniture and finishes and the use of plants – a blending of contemporary designer furniture that greatly reinforces this updated identity.

    As Massimo Dutti Singapore’s second largest store after Liat Tower, the new venue is in line with the Inditex Group’s latest approach to eco-efficiency.

    Electricity consumption has been reduced by some 30 per cent and water consumption by 40 per cent in comparison with its conventional stores. The eco-efficiency measures implemented include a store lighting system that optimises the lighting for the furnishings, and the exclusive use of LED bulbs. The lighting system also enables partial lighting of store spaces.

    The Changi store also features a Travel Collection, with easy-iron shirts and lightweight crease-resistant suits.

    Lancome’s fantasy wonderland pop‑up at Bangkok King Power Rangnam, featuring the brand’s first ever interactive LED projection, will come to a close on March 10.

    The Chinese New Year Lancome pop-up was launched on February 4 following the success of Lancome’s festivities at King Power Rangnam the previous year. In keeping with the brand’s stated commitment to “empower women to express their best selves”, Lancome’s “Wish Big” pop-up featured a state-of-the-art LED installation that went up to the atrium ceiling, surrounded by floating lanterns symbolising wishes rising into the heavens.

    Guests enjoy real-time interaction with the retail design as they walk around the 10‑metre-long LED installation. The wonderland-inspired design is fully integrated with the entire retail space, allowing Lancome to completely take over of the Rangnam atrium.

    Every single visible touchpoint and the six‑metre-high chateau structure is branded with Lancome’s signature shade of Parisian rouge, wishing visitors a good start to the New Year and contributing to the festive CNY atmosphere.

    The immersive experience in Lancome’s wonderland continues inside the pop-up with a custom “boomerang photo booth” that allows visitors to virtually interact with Lancome products. All photos and videos can be downloaded so visitors can share them on social media. On the other side of the pop‑up, a large LED installation displays a Parisian cityscape that doubles as an interactive game, giving customers  the chance to “catch” floating Lancome products on screen and exchange them for prizes in store.

    BMW Luxury Lounge Showcases Future Products

    In the midst of a product offensive that will see many new and refreshed models join its lineup in the coming months, BMW recently staged a limited-run brand experience in Toronto’s Yorkville neighbourhood to showcase two forthcoming models. The display, which has a pop-up feel to it, is known as the BMW Luxury Lounge, a venue open to the public during the day and invite-only events in the evening. As its name would suggest, the point is to generate interest in the brand and get attendees excited for a slew of new BMWs on deck.

    The site of the Luxury Lounge – Bloor St. W. near Avenue Rd. – is fertile ground not only for luxury automotive manufacturers but makers of other luxury goods as well, which is why BMW is partnering with Hugo Boss, Montblanc and Roche Bobois. These brands, along with Samsung Canada and art gallery LUMAS Canada have also contributed to furnishing the space which, with its black and glass walls, wood grain floors and leather sofa, has the feel of modern, minimalist luxury.

    “We’ve taken on this initiative because we believe customers’ expectations of luxury are evolving,” said Sebastian Beuchel, director, BMW brand management, said in a statement. “This beautifully designed space is a showcase for our interpretation of modern, contemporary luxury.”

    Last October, BMW hosted a similar limited engagement exhibit known as the Luxury Excellence Pavilion on Bay St. in the heart of Toronto’s financial district that not only showcased the Munich-based carmaker’s wares, but also those of other several other luxury brands. The feature attraction was the BMW X7 iPerformance, a concept vehicle first shown about a month earlier at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show.

    Fast forward a year, and it’s time for the Luxury Lounge, a similar exhibit but with some noteworthy differences.

    Whereas the Luxury Excellence Pavilion ran for almost two weeks (Oct. 16-29), the Luxury Lounge was around for just six days (Oct. 10-16) and there were no test drives from the BMW fleet available.

    In its place are two main attractions that represent the future of BMW and are bound to cause a bit of a stir.

    First up is a vehicle that can’t be discussed in detail but was available for viewing so long as visitors surrendered their mobile phones before entering the curtained-off backroom where it was being shown. A strict no-photo policy was in effect.

    I’m talking about the full-size, three-row 2019 X7 SUV, a vehicle BMW and its dealers are very excited about. The production X7 will make its world premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show next month and will go on sale early next year. The one being shown in Toronto was an uncamouflaged pre-production copy. Getting it to Toronto took some doing, but its presence made a visit to the Luxury Lounge even more worthwhile.

    Now, in accordance with the wishes of BMW Canada’s communications team, I’ll move along… to the 8-Series coupe which is returning to the lineup after a 20-year hiatus. I have clearance to talk about this one freely.

    Centred in the middle of the Luxury Lounge floor plan was a Dravit (metallic) grey 2019 850i xDrive, trimmed in factory option carbon fibre accents (roof, mirror caps, lip spoiler, rear diffuser, etc.) and optional M Performance 20-inch wheels finished in a metallic gold tint.

    Conceived as a flagship model, the 8 Series is a design and technology carrier and, as such, has features that will eventually spread across the BMW family.

    On this front, a few things stand out. The first thing that caught my eye are the new LED headlights the 8 Series is wearing, which feature standard high beam LaserLight technology (to comply with North American laws they’ll only work at speeds above 60 km/h) along with a more angular shape with two separate elements that still look like BMW headlights when viewed from a distance. Clever.

    Other new design elements include a revised kidney grille that is attached at the centre, a callback to the grilles of 1970s-era BMWs. Also, a BMW rep told me that customized paintwork will be offered on the 8 Series though the company’s Individual program. While they can’t guarantee they’ll be able to match every paint chip or swatch a customer has, BMW aims to make the 8 Series available in more exciting colours than those offered on a traditional list of set finishes.

    Inside, the cabin receives some noteworthy advances headlined by the company’s all-new Operating system 7.0 software, which powers the infotainment and instrument cluster screens. My eye was also drawn to the available glass crystal shift knob and iDrive controller.

    Finally, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the powertrain. The 8 is being offered with an overhauled variant of BMW’s 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8, which packs 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft. of torque that is mated to a standard 8-speed automatic and xDrive AWD system.

    Fast? You bet. BMW has the 8 Series’ 0-100 km/h time pegged at 3.7 seconds.

    The best part for consumers and interested auto journalists alike is the wait for the 8 Series arrival won’t last much longer. Customer orders begin on December 8, with deliveries likely to begin in the new year. Pricing info hasn’t been released but will be announced closer to on-sale.

    As for the X7, look for more info when it’s revealed during the media preview days at the Los Angeles Auto Show on Nov. 28-29.

    Osram to embark on high-end LED technology in Malaysia

    Light-emitting diode (LED) chip company Osram Opto Semiconductors (M) Sdn Bhd is looking to embark on advanced lighting technology in Malaysia, particularly for automotive applications as it sees huge growth potential in the market.

    “There is more and more of real high-end (lighting) applications needed (in Malaysia) such as pixel headlights in cars for instance and we see that as a huge opportunity for us,” its CEO Dr Ronald Mueller said at the handover ceremony of equipment worth RM2.4 million by Osram to four public universities today.

    Additionally, Mueller said the German-based company is also bullish in the application of micro-pixelated LED for display devices, which he believes will revolutionise the quality of visualisation and improve the illumination quality.

    “We are very confident in micro-pixelized displays, where in five years you might have a 10 sq m of a highly dense pixelized LED displays that is totally different compared with what we have today.

    “These are the areas that we think as hugely interesting and will grow. It’s just a question of when it will takes off. It maybe will take a couple of years but we will go into that direction ,” he added.

    Primarily focused on semiconductor-based technologies, Osram’s products are used in highly diverse applications ranging from virtual reality to autonomous driving and from smartphones to smart and connected lighting solutions in buildings and cities.

    Meanwhile, Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) deputy CEO Arham Abdul Rahman, who officiated the handover ceremony, said as of May this year, Osram’s accumulated investment in the country amounted to RM4.6 billion, with a local spending of RM500 million, supporting close to 600 local vendors.

    “Today’s event is an example of a foreign investment that has contributed much to Malaysia. Mida would like to encourage other global companies to emulate these practices and bring the electrical and electronic industry to the next level of technology sophistication and competitiveness,” Arham said.

    Osram’s donation of the latest semiconductor and photonic equipment involved Universiti Malaya, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Perlis and National University of Malaysia.

    The equipment will be used to provide hands-on educational experience for high-tech industry’s students.

    “By donating our manufacturing equipment for use in universities, we are helping to train the next generation of engineers,” Mueller added.

    Samsung to debut MicroLED TVs this year

    Samsung Electronics will launch televisions using MicroLED next-generation display technology by the end of the year, with price tags that could reach $300,000.

    Samsung will be able to work flexibly with customers on screen size, thanks to the modular design of its MicroLED panels, design chief Lee Don-tae told.

    Although details have not been settled, the TVs due out this year could be even larger than the 88-inchers leading Samsung’s current lineup. Samsung plans to market them as a high-end offering in the U.S. and the Middle East, and as a potential replacement for computer projectors.

    MicroLED, which uses massive numbers of tiny light-emitting diodes per screen, is seen as the next big thing in display technology. Unlike LCD and many OLED TVs on the market, it does not rely on color filters, using elements that emit red, green and blue light instead. It is also believed to offer better images with a wider viewing angle. Competition is already heating up. Apple has begun developing its own MicroLED displays, according to American reports.

    Samsung itself has pulled out of OLED TVs, which take their name from the organic LEDs they employ. But the company remains critical of rivals’ products, most of which use white OLEDs simply as a light source rather than to produce color. Samsung employs OLEDs that emit their own colors in smartphone displays that it makes.

    Meanwhile, the LG group has emerged as a key player in displays based on white OLEDs. In addition to using them in its own TVs, it is also now supplying the panels to 13 TV manufacturers, including Sony.

    OLED TVs are rapidly becoming a fixture in luxury markets. The global market for them nearly quintupled between 2015 and 2017 to roughly 1.33 million units, according to Euromonitor International. Samsung is struggling to remain a leading player in high-end TVs with its lack of OLED models and wants to gain a head start in next-generation MicroLEDs.

GE is connecting energy-saving LEDs with state-of-the-art software, unleashing a whole new potential for how we light and think about our world. The company recently announced several collaborations to enable intelligent cities, buildings and homes.

    Intelligent Buildings

    GE recently announced a collaboration with Qualcomm Atheros to bring indoor positioning technology — a form of Visible Light Communication (VLC ) — to major retailers. This collaboration allows LED bulbs and fixtures to “talk” to shoppers’ smartphones and tablets though unique lighting pulse patterns, delivering indoor navigation/mapping, product information and special offers or coupons for nearby products.

    “Today’s consumers want a customized experience — from the news they read, to the games they play, to the products they buy, they expect technology-driven personalization,” said Jeff Bisberg, Global General Manager, Indoor Location, GE Lighting. “Working with Qualcomm Atheros, GE is harnessing the power of our commercial LED lighting to give retailers the opportunity to create an enhanced experience for shoppers securely, while respecting their privacy.”

    Beyond the retail industry, lighting-based indoor positioning systems also could see application in airports, hotels, hospitals and many other environments where it is beneficial to know one’s exact location.

    Intelligent Cities

    From high street lighting costs to traffic congestion, parking allotments and emergency response, cities across the world juggle a variety of challenges. By repurposing street lights with LEDs containing sensors, controls, wireless transmitters and microprocessors, cities will be able to create new opportunities for reducing cost, optimizing their operations and creating value-added services for residents, making their cities even more livable and workable.

    Cities on both U.S. coasts — San Diego, Calif. and Jacksonville, Fla. — are the first to pilot GE’s Intelligent Environments for Cities solution, which uses LED street lighting installations to connect, collect and analyze data being generated, helping cities run more efficiently and providing new services and conveniences for residents and visitors.

    The potential opportunities for this solution are truly endless. For instance, parking downtown may be a pain, but not in the intelligent city of the future. Networked LED street lights will have the ability to direct drivers to available spaces with the help of built-in sensors and wireless transceivers. The same streetlight could serve as a sensor and give warnings in the event of a hurricane or other event through a public-address speaker concealed within the light post. In another scenario, microprocessors and other sensors could work together to give emergency responders real-time views of an area as they are responding to an emergency call before they even arrive on scene.

    These features are examples of what could be driven through this solution in the future.

    Affordable, connected solutions are even making it possible for people to manage the lighting in their homes from anywhere in the world, allowing dimming and scheduling, such as automating lights to turn on when you wake up, turn off when you leave or dim when bedtime approaches.

    In time, bulbs could even be “taught” to respond to an individual’s presence or a change in light level thanks to learning algorithms that record and recall personal preferences.
