    Samsung rumored to team up with top camera supplier

    Having a world-famous camera company supply a phone manufacturer with parts for the photography system on the firm’s handsets is not new. Huawei uses lenses supplied by Leica, and in the latest partnership, OnePlus uses camera parts from Hasselblad. The public might not know that name, but among professionals it is well known and the company has a great reputation.

    Tipster Ice Universe posted an interesting rumor on Weibo the other day that was seconded on Twitter by another (albeit lesser-known) tipster using the handle @heyitsyogesh. Both say that Samsung is in talks with Olympus about supplying Samsung with cameras for future smartphone models. The cameras provided under the rumored partnership will be high quality with Samsung continuing to use its own image signal processors (ISP).

    A tweet sent by @heyitdyogesh mentions that an Olympus camera might end up on a special edition model of the Galaxy Fold. Turning to regular production models, we could see Olympus take over Samsung’s camera module for the first time with next year’s Galaxy S22 flagship series. If tradition holds, we could see that line launch sometime during the first quarter of 2022.

    Samsung is believed to be working on the successor to its current top-of-the-line Exynos chipset which it has codenamed Olympus. Reportedly, the chip will deliver improved performance compared to the Exynos 2100. Do you believe that the use of the Olympus codename is a clue Sammy is giving us or is it just a coincidence?

    Despite the rumors, we would be amiss if we didn’t point out that Olympus sold its camera and imaging business to Japan Industrial Partners last year. That would seem to put the kibosh on the rumors, and so far no partnership has been announced anyway. If it turns out just to be a failed rumor, it isn’t clear anyway whether the use of a high-profile camera brand actually helps to generate smartphone sales.

    Snapdragon 888’s successor may feature Leica technology

    Qualcomm appears to be gearing up to release a toned-down version of the Snapdragon 888 (SM8350) chip. The news comes from leaker Roland Quandt, who says that unlike the flagship Snapdragon 888, the stripped-down variant will not have an integrated 5G modem.

    The new chip (SM8325) will apparently power budget flagship phones and it is not clear how it would differ from the Snapdragon 870. Since it’s been billed as a lower-specced version of the Snapdragon 888, it’s likely that it will be based on the 5nm process. The SoC might be meant for developing markets where 5G networks have not been rolled out yet.

    Quandt has also learned that Qualcomm has started testing early samples of the Snapdragon 888 successor. The chip is apparently internally known as ‘Waipio’ and its model number is SM8450. It will likely be unveiled towards the end of 2021, as is the norm.

    The company is currently testing samples that are compatible with 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of storage. The next-generation chip’s camera capabilities are also expected to get a major boost and it seems that Qualcomm has teamed up with optics specialist Leica for this purpose. Current testing is apparently centered on a module internally known as “Leica1.”

    The Snapdragon 888 was made by Samsung and the recently announced 5G modems (Snapdragon X62 and Snapdragon X65) are based on the chaebol’s 4nm process. It’s not known if Snapdragon 888’s successor will also be built on a new process node.

    A recent report says that Qualcomm will stick with Samsung’s 5nm tech for this year and go back to TSMC in 2022 for a 4nm flagship SoC.

    Quandt has also revealed the existence of a mid-tier chip. The SM7325 apparently features one core running at 2.7GHz, three cores with clock speeds of 2.4 GHz, and four cores with frequencies up to 1.8 GHz. The test platform supports up to 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. The final product may support up to 16GB of RAM.

    A 5nm upper-midrange chip called Snapdragon 775 (SM7350) is also reportedly in the pipeline.

    Cafe Leitz opens in Raffles Hotel Singapore

    German photography brand Leica has reopened at Raffles Hotel with a line of wristwatches and a cafe. The opening debuts Leica’s Cafe Leitz in Singapore, based on its German flagship and serving a variety of coffees and petit fours. The store, launched on the site of the brand’s original Singapore location, features a new experiential retail concept that showcases Leica’s iconic cameras while drawing visitors towards its first line of digital watches in Southeast Asia.

    Leica enters the watchmaking industry alongside a pewter and silver collaboration jewellery line with Royal Selangor exclusive to Leica Store Raffles, featuring subtle references to the Leica camera. The store hosts a gallery space for classic Leica photography.

    Leica Thailand opens second global cafe

    Leica Thailand distributor A-List Private has opened a lifestyle cafe for the Leica community – Cafe Leitz by Pacamara.

    The cafe, opened in partnership with Thai coffee brand Pacamara, is located in a 214sqm space on EmQuartier’s mezzanine level. Modelled on a similar cafe in London it is just the camera brand’s second such cafe in the world.

    The central Bangkok venue is a meeting place for Leica Thailand enthusiasts to share knowledge, techniques and experiences. Leica specialists are on hand to discuss and reveal on how to use some of the cameras’ more advanced functions professionally and options that the Leica cameras possess.

    The cafe was designed in a modern style featuring relaxed colours like black, white, gray and brown, sure to be familiar with any Leica user.

    A-List MD Danai Sorakraikitikul said there will be experiential activities for customers, such as the opportunity to try out Leica cameras. It will also host workshops and serve as a gallery for photography exhibitions by upcoming photographers from the Leica Akademie.

    “Visitors will see, smell, taste, hear and feel the Leica experience,” he said.

    New Leica boutique opens in Hanoi

    Leica Vietnam has introduced its high-end cameras and sports optics in its first boutique, in Hanoi.

    As well as offering the German brand’s entire range, including its signature Leica Akademie and Leica Galerie, the Leica Boutique also aims to become a community for local photographers where they can share their passion and learn techniques from experts, says Leica Asia Pacific CEO Sunil Kaul.

    Over its first days the store hosted an exhibition, The Beauty of Light, and introduced the latest Leica camera.

    A Ho Chi Minh store will be opened next year.
