Over 600 Lexus cars recalled in Vietnam

Toyota Vietnam has issued a recall for 634 Lexus cars in Vietnam due to potential issues with their cameras and fuel injectors.

Most of the recalled vehicles were produced between November 2022 and August 2023, according to Vietnam Register.

The cover of the front and rear cameras of these units can be exposed after time, allowing water to enter and causing internal short circuit that can disable them.

Among the recalled vehicles are 26 units that have fuel injectors which can be distorted over time, increasing risks of explosion.

While no incidents have been reported so far, the manufacturer is recalling these vehicles as a precautionary measure.

Owners of the affected vehicles are entitled to a free replacement of these parts at Lexus dealerships in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The recall service will be available for three years, starting from Aug. 13.

Lexus Sets Up Its Brand Experience Centre In Coimbatore

Lexus India opened its one-of-a-kind, Meraki-inspired brand experience centre in Coimbatore. The company says the design of the new experience centre takes inspiration from the city’s trade legacy, which is an amalgamation of its textile industry and a long-lived passion for motorsport combined with the Japanese spirit of precision, perfection, and subtle luxury. The new experience centre features several design elements inspired by Lexus cars such as the distinctive spindle design among others.

Naveen Soni, President – Lexus India said, “We have always believed in establishing stronger ties with our guests, and we are delighted to announce the inauguration of our new brand space in Coimbatore, just a few months after the introduction of our brand space in Gurugram. With the opening of numerous facilities across the country, this innovative concept gets us one step closer to welcoming many more of our guests on a journey of luxury, uniqueness, and amazing experiences with Lexus.”

The pièce-de-résistance is the mural in the Zen court that represents a deconstructed portrayal of the famous bull race tradition of southern India with specially designed carts, drawing parallels to the Lexus engine that is energy efficient and has a low carbon footprint while enhancing the rider’s excitement and experience. In line with the brand’s ethos of creating a better tomorrow through sustainable design, the use of “soot” powdered in the cast in-situ concrete floor and the Zen court wall add to energy efficient, sustainable, and eco-friendly structure. This also contributes to reduced carbon footprint in a small way.

The Lexus Meraki – Coimbatore joins the current network of Lexus Brand Spaces in Gurugram and the Lexus Guest Experience Centres in New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Chennai, and an upcoming one in Kochi, along with the Lexus virtual guest experience centre that will soon be hosted on the Lexus India website bringing the Lexus brand and its offering closer to the discerning luxury consumer located across India. With the opening of the Lexus Meraki in Coimbatore, Lexus India establishes its footprint in 13 cities with 15 guest touchpoints across India.

  • Lexus LC500h Coming To India In 2020

Lexus LC500h Coming To India In 2020

Lexus India has confirmed that the 2020 LC500h will be launched in India next year. While the company is still to decide on the timeline of the launch, we expect it to come to us in the 2nd half of 2020. The LC500h was first showcased as a concept at the 2012 Detroit Motor Show as the LF-LC. The challenge here was to bring this concept to life and in 2017 the LC or Luxury Coupe was finally launched. The LC500h is on sale in 68 countries already and India will be the 69th to get it. 12,000 units of the LC500h have already been sold worldwide ever since its launch and with its introduction to new markets, Lexus is looking to add more customers to its tally.

The LC500h will be positioned as a GT or Grand Tourer. India will only get the hybrid variant of the LC. Sadly, we won’t get the one with the V8 engine. Then again, given that Lexus India’s portfolio currently boasts of majority cars getting hybrid powertrains, this move does not come as a surprise. The LC500h will get the 3.5-liter petrol engine which produces 295 bhp. There are two electric motors which will produce 177bhp and there’s a lithium-ion battery for the energy to be stored. Now total combined output stands at 354bhp and this translates into a 0-100 kmph time of just above 5 seconds.

The LC500h looks mad and devilishly handsome. Lexus has really turned a new leaf with its design. Upfront, it gets the massive spindle grille, which is a family identity now, L-shaped DRLs and three LED headlamps, which blend well into the design. There’s a bit of aggression on the face and the low hood makes it look as if it’s closer to the ground and gives it a sports car-like stance. The pinched waist, blackened C-Pillars and the creases to the side, add a lot of drama to the look. As you move to the rear, the LC500h gets wider and there’s no doubt it looks stunning.

Lexus is likely to price the LC500h in India in the range of ₹ 1.5 crore and this will see it take on the likes of the Jaguar F-Type which is priced between ₹ 90.93 crore for the 2.0-liter coupe variant and goes up to ₹ 2.80 crore for the SVR convertible variant along with the Audi RS5 Coupe which costs ₹ 1.12 Crore. It will be a low volume player for the company but there has been no clarification from Lexus India about how many units of the LC500h it plans to sell in the country.

  • Lexus’ Safety System+ To Be Standard In All Cars In The US From 2020

Lexus’ Safety System+ To Be Standard In All Cars In The US From 2020

Collisions that result in injury can often be caused by a delay in a driver’s recognition of the situation and his or her ability to react accordingly. In a move to help prevent such accidents before they happen, the Lexus Safety System+ will be a standard feature in all US Lexus vehicles starting with the 2020 model year. Designed to help protect drivers, passengers and pedestrians, the Lexus Safety System+ is an integrated suite of four advanced active safety packages anchored by automated pre-collision warning and braking.

David Christ, group vice president and general manager, Lexus Division said, “We are working toward preventing crashes before they happen. That’s why we have developed some of the most advanced safety features on the road today, and now those systems will be standard equipment on every model we sell.”

The Safety System+ will come with Pre-Collison System with Pedestrian Detection, a system which is engineered to help detect a preceding vehicle or a pedestrian in front of the Lexus under certain conditions. Should the system detect a pedestrian or a potential frontal collision, it’s designed to activate an audible and visual alert while automatically preparing Brake Assist for an increased braking response. If the driver does not break in time, the system is designed to automatically begin braking before impact and, in some cases, can even bring the vehicle to a stop.

There will also be Lane departure alert which will utilize a high-resolution camera to monitor visible lane markings and determine the vehicle’s position within a lane. If an inadvertent lane departure or potential departure due to swaying is detected at speeds above 51 kmph, the system attempts to alert the driver with audio and visual warnings and steering wheel vibrations. Then there are the Intelligent High Beams which provide added visibility for the Lexus driver as well as other motorists, Intelligent High Beams offer added illumination to help keep the driver focused on the road. When the road ahead is clear, the system defaults to high-beam mode, then temporarily switches to low beams when it detects the headlamps or taillamps of vehicles ahead.

And finally, there’s the dynamic radar cruise control which uses radar and camera technology to help maintain a preset speed and following distance from the vehicle ahead. If driving at highway speeds and the road ahead clears, the vehicle returns to its preset speed.

  • Toyota downshifts Lexus view

    Toyota downshifts Lexus view

Japanese car maker Toyota Motor Thailand is downbeat about sales prospects of its luxury brand Lexus this year, saying the price of imported cars make them less able to compete with locally made luxury brands.

Toyota expects to sell 650 Lexus cars in 2017, a 24% drop year-on-year, said executive vice-president Vudhigorn Suriyachantananont.

“We admit the Lexus brand is at a disadvantage in the luxury car market because they are imported from Japan, so their retail prices are much higher than local luxury brands,” he said.

Cars imported from Japan are subjected to an import duty of 60% under the Japan–Thailand Economic Partnership Agreement, compared to the normal duty of 80%.

Mr Vudhigorn said Lexus also has launched fewer models in the Thai market. It introduced the Lexus RX sport utility vehicle about two years ago, while the new Lexus LS sedan was launched locally yesterday, priced from 11.5-15.8 million baht, available with either an internal combustion engine or hybrid-electric platform.

“For the new LS, we aim to sell about 30-40 cars annually,” he said.

Lexus recorded its Thai sales record in 2015, selling 834 cars, up sharply by 46% from the previous year. But sales dropped to 770 cars in 2016.

Lexus has sold 8,455 cars total in Thailand as of September this year.

Mr Vudhigorn forecast the luxury market to grow by 20% to 26,000-27,000 cars sold in 2017 after sales from January to September tallied 20,056 cars.

Two German brands — Mercedes-Benz and BMW — now control over 90% of the luxury car segment because both companies have their local assembly plants in Thailand, he said.

Third-ranked is Sweden’s Volvo, while Lexus is in the fourth spot in the Thai luxury market.

President Michinobu Sugata said Toyota does not have plans to localise Lexus’s assembly plant at Toyota’s passenger car factory in Chachoengsao, even though it would make retail prices more competitive in the Thai market.

Lexus has three showrooms and service centres in Bangkok and 10 service centres in upcountry provinces.

Toyota expects to sell 265,000 units this year, up 8% in line with the local car market, which is projected to grow by 8% to 830,000 units.

Toyota plans to export 291,000 units from its Thailand operation, down by 9% from last year mainly because of a drop in sales from the Middle East and Latin America.

On Friday, Toyota is scheduled to announce its plan to ship the Hilux Revo pickup to Japan for the first time.

  • Sales at Toyota’s Lexus brand slide in first-half as sedans suffer

Sales at Toyota’s Lexus brand slide in first-half as sedans suffer

Toyota Motor on Friday said its luxury Lexus brand suffered its first fall in half-year global sales in six years as demand for its sedans tumbled in the United States, its biggest market.

Sedans, traditionally a mainstay for automakers including Toyota and Honda Motor, have fallen out of favor in their key U.S. market in past years, sending many carmakers scrambling to manufacture more larger vehicles including SUVs and trucks.

Toyota said it sold 305,169 Lexus vehicles worldwide in the six months to June, down 4.4 percent from 319,275 vehicles a year earlier. Sales slumped 10 percent in the United States, which comprises nearly half of Lexus’s global sales, and 23 percent in Japan, while jumping 30 percent in China.

“The U.S. passenger car market has been very challenging, and this has affected sales,” Toyota spokesman Maki Niimi said.

He added that the automaker expects annual sales to slide about 4.0 percent this year to around 650,000 units, as the recently launched LC sports coupe model and a revamped version of its marquee LS sedan model later this year lift sales slightly in the coming months.

While Lexus continues to enjoy solid U.S. sales of its NX SUV crossover model, analysts said that the brand overall had fallen behind rival luxury brands with newer sedan offerings including Daimler AG’s Mercedes, which recently launched its E-Class range, and BMW’s 5-series.

“It’s a model cycle issue,” said Janet Lewis, head of Asia transportation research at Macquarie Securities. “You have two core competing products recently launched (by Mercedes and BMW), while the LS is pretty long in the tooth.”

Lexus sold just 1,855 units of its LS 460 model in the United States in January-June, down 35.2 percent from a year earlier.

Overall, Toyota, the world’s second-biggest automaker, expects to sell 10.25 million vehicles globally this year, down a touch from last year.

Toyota recalls 66,830 imported Lexus cars in China

The Chinese unit of Toyota Motor Corp will recall 66,830 imported Lexus brand vehicles in the country over potential safety issues, China’s quality watchdog said on Friday.

Some Lexus models, made between June 2014 and December 2016, have problems with their braking software, China’s General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said on its website.

In October, Toyota issued a recall for about 5.8 million cars in Japan, Europe and China over potentially faulty airbag inflators made by Takata Corp. In June

The notice urged consumers to immediately contact dealers for inspection and said current stock vehicles will be sold in the absence of defects.
