    StarHub selects Red Hat to help train its engineers

    Singapore’s StarHub has selected Red Hat to provide specialized training for its Integrated Network Engineering team to help them keep abreast of best practices in next-generation cloud-based platforms.

    Under the agreement, StarHub engineers will take part in the Red Hat Training and Certification program based on the Red Hat OpenStack Platform, which the operator has deployed across its infrastructure.

    The program will include hands-on and lab-based training designed to help them better understand Red Hat tools to enable the faster delivery of OpenStack solutions, as well as training and knowledge of selected tools and solutions for various real-world scenarios.

    The Integrated Network Engineering team is tasked with designing and maintaining efficient and scalable fixed and wireless networks for StarHub’s Singapore operations. It is led by StarHub CTO Chong Siew Loong.

    “Our networks can only be as good as the team managing them. This is why at StarHub, we invest in the development of our people to maintain the high levels of professional competency required to offer our customers the best network experience,” Chong said.

    “Amid rapid technological advances, we work with renowned software companies like Red Hat to hone skills that are not only relevant today, but a catalyst for future innovation.”

    Rakuten using Red Hat technologies in mobile rollout

    Japan’s Rakuten announced it has arranged to use open source technologies provided by Red Hat in its upcoming end-to-end cloud native mobile network.

    The network, which is scheduled to launch in October, will use Red Hat’s open hybrid cloud technologies, Rakuten announced at this week’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

    Rakuten Mobile Network has built an NFV based network supported by Red Hat Enterprise Linux, the Red Hat OpenStack Platform and Red Hat Ceph Storage software-defined storage solution.

    The deployment will support the planned launch of 4G mobile services, and leave Rakuten Mobile Network well placed to roll out 5G services subject to government licensing approval.

    “Our vision is to build a network that innovates at the speed of software and scales at the speed of cloud, and with a culture founded in technical and operational innovation, we are uniquely positioned to achieve that. We are excited to work with leading partners from around the world such as Red Hat as we work to create the world’s first end-to-end fully virtualized cloud-native network,” Rakuten Mobile Network CTO Tareq Amin said.

    “End-to-end automation for both network and services is a pillar of our systems building strategy, and by using Red Hat’s open source technology we can achieve automation and auto-scaling, enabling more productive operations and allowing us to provide cost-effective services to our customers.”

    Cathay Pacific taps Red Hat for hybrid cloud transition

    Airline Cathay Pacific is using Red Hat solutions and services to transform its legacy infrastructure into a modern hybrid cloud architecture.

    Using Red Hat OpenStack Platform and Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, Cathay Pacific created a more efficient and scalable platform for developing and delivering new services, enabling the company to ultimately create a better overall experience for their customers.

    Based in Hong Kong, Cathay Pacific is an international airline offering passenger and cargo services to 200 destinations in 52 countries and territories worldwide. Digital capabilities are a critical function of the company’s business strategy for growth, with the heart of this initiative emphasizing a responsive and adaptable customer experience.

    Cathay Pacific’s legacy infrastructure and development process posed a challenge, making it difficult for the airline to maintain a high level of performance from its internal systems and customer-facing applications. Its existing systems were inflexible and time consuming to modify, forcing the company to handle an increasing level of technical debt dedicated to system maintenance and “keeping the lights on.”

    Using Red Hat’s open standards-based, enterprise technologies and guided by Red Hat’s technical expertise, Cathay Pacific migrated from its legacy infrastructure to a hybrid cloud architecture, consisting of a private cloud environment that includes Red Hat OpenStack Platform which can provision workloads as needed into public cloud instances.

    Forming the bridge to the public cloud is Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, which supports more than 50 consumer-facing applications.

    With Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, Cathay Pacific is able to move applications in a more streamlined fashion across its hybrid infrastructure and is able to scale computing resources up and down as demand requires.

    Alibaba Cloud teams up with Red Hat

    Alibaba Cloud and Red Hat are joining forces to bring Red Hat’s open source solutions to Alibaba Cloud’s customers around the globe.

    Alibaba Cloud is now part of the Red Hat Certified Cloud and Service Provider program, joining a group of technology industry leaders who offer Red Hat-tested and validated solutions that extend the functionality of Red Hat’s broad portfolio of open source cloud solutions.

    The partnership extends the reach of Red Hat’s offerings across the top public clouds globally, providing a scalable destination for cloud computing and reiterating Red Hat’s commitment to providing greater choice in the cloud.

    In the coming months, Red Hat solutions will be available directly to Alibaba Cloud customers, enabling them to take advantage of the full value of Red Hat’s broad portfolio of open source cloud solutions. Alibaba Cloud intends to offer Red Hat Enterprise Linux in a pay-as-you-go model in the Alibaba Cloud Marketplace.

    Launched in 2009, the Red Hat Certified Cloud and Service Provider Program is designed to assemble the solutions cloud providers need to plan, build, manage and offer hosted cloud solutions and Red Hat technologies to customers.

    The Certified Cloud Provider designation is awarded to Red Hat partners following validation by Red Hat. Each provider meets testing and certification requirements to demonstrate that they can deliver a safe, scalable, supported and consistent environment for enterprise cloud deployments.

    In the coming months, Red Hat customers will also be able to move eligible, unused Red Hat subscriptions from their data center to Alibaba Cloud. Red Hat Cloud Access is an innovative “bring-your-own-subscription” offering that enables customers to move eligible Red Hat subscriptions from on-premise to public clouds.

    Linux Foundation launches Open Security Controller Project

    The Linux Foundation has launched a new open source project focused on centralizing security services orchestration for multi-cloud environments.

    The Open Security Controller Project technology will automate the deployment of virtualized network security functions, such as next-generation firewall, intrusion prevention systems and application data controllers, to protect east-west traffic inside the data center, said the foundation in a statement.

    The project orchestrates the deployment of virtual network security policies, applies the correct policy to the appropriate workload, and it brokers services among cloud management platforms—resulting in seamless integration of multi-vendor virtual security controls.

    “Software-defined networks are becoming a standard for businesses, and open source networking projects are a key element in helping the transition, and pushing for a more automated network” said Arpit Joshipura, general manager of networking and orchestration at The Linux Foundation. “Equally important to automation in the open source community is ensuring security. The Open Security Controller Project touches both of these areas. We are excited to have this project join The Linux Foundation, and look forward to the collaboration this project will engender regarding network security now and in the future.”

    Founding members of the project include Huawei, Intel, McAfee, Nuage Networksfrom Nokia, and Palo Alto Networks.

    Open Security Controller Project technology is licensed under Apache 2.

    Rackspace has launched a new private cloud service that delivers OpenStack private clouds as-a-service using the Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform.

    Rackspace Private Cloud powered by Red Hat expands the Rackspace OpenStack-as-a-Service product portfolio.

    Managed by OpenStack and Red Hat experts at Rackspace and backed by Fanatical Support, the service combined public cloud benefits with the security, control and performance of an enterprise environment. The offering is backed by an industry-leading 99.99% OpenStack API uptime guarantee.

    Rackspace is contributing to Red Hat’s continued efforts to improve Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform by testing and certifying for broad hardware and software compatibility, performance and availability.

    Rackspace manages and maintains the Red Hat environment including the underlying Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Red Hat Satellite and Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform so customers can focus on their business applications and not their infrastructure.

    Customers have a single point of contact that will deploy, manage and maintain their private cloud at Rackspace. As an additional feature, customers have the flexibility of bringing their own Red Hat subscriptions to Rackspace, using Red Hat Cloud Access.
