  • Longines opens a new flagship store

Longines opens a new flagship store

Luxury watchmaker Longines is the latest international retailer to secure a flagship store on Melbourne’s Collins Street after striking a deal with the landlord to modify the property’s façade to meet its global standards.

The property at 256 Collins Street is set at 148sqm of ground space and additional 138sqm of basement space.

The retailer initially turned down the space due to the store frontage not meeting the brand’s global requirements but later took a second look after CBRE leasing agents Zelman Ainsworth and Tan Thach worked closely with architecture firm Meiter 3 and the building landlord to draft designs that unlocked the store’s frontage potential and showed Longines what was possible.

According to CBRE, the heritage building had significant limitations, making it challenging to modify the building. Eventually, they and Meiter 3 curated a council and heritage approved strategy, which also spoke to Longines’ sensitive design identity.

The draft scheme included removing awnings, amplifying the building’s original architecture – circa 1950 – and mirroring the appearance of other Longines flagship locations across the globe; a classic, bright and timeless store front.

Longines subsequently secured a 10-year lease over the property at a market rent.

Ainsworth said there are more opportunities than ever for landlords to work with retailers to reposition their properties and stay relevant.

“There are endless opportunities for landlords to reposition their real estate to ensure their properties suit a changing retail market,” he said. “Today, retail stores must provide brands with the platform and exposure they need to remain competitive on a global scale and engaged with their customer base.”

“Ultimately if the shop on offer is one dimensional with no flexibility to adapt to the changing market – it will be difficult for retailers to see any value,” he added.

Other international retailers who have leased spaced on Collins St over the past 26 months include Gucci, Bottega Veneta, Versace, Fendi, Berluti, TAG Heuer, Coach, Mercedes Me, Omega, Cartier, Burberry and Hour Glass.

Longines opens new Kuala Lumpur store

Longines has opened a new store in Kuala Lumpur, as the Swiss luxury firm looks to bolster its standalone store count in Malaysia.

Located the capital’s prestigious Suria KLCC mall, the Longines store covers 75-square-metres and adopts the style codes seen in boutiques around the world.

Upon entering the boutique, shoppers face a floor-to-ceiling poster of Longines ambassador, Kate Winslet, while the main wall panel projects a large video screen, offering an insight into Longines’ 185-year long history.

Store features include lacquered wood panelling with the firm’s winged hourglass logo, as well as burnished leather, polished marble and selected fixtures and furnishings “that create a calm inviting environment,” said the brand in a statement.

An exclusive VIP area allows customers to shop in comfort and privacy, while finding out more about the brand and specific collections, it said.

The Suria KlCC store stocks the iconic watchmaker’s latest collections for both men and women.  There’s a dedicated space for The Longines Equestrian Collection, a tribute to Longines’ involvement in equestrian sports and its commitment to its female customers, inspired by the equine world.

The new store also has a small display of nine pocket watches from the 19th century, taken from the Longines Museum located at the company’s headquarters in Saint-Imier, Switzerland. The new boutique is the first in Southeast Asia to feature the valuable archive pieces, said Longines.

Finally, the boutique has a large range of Longines collections including Longines DolceVita, The Longines Master Collection, Conquest Classic as well as Heritage models, which are on freestanding displays for easy access.

The new store follows Longines’ recent store opening in Macau in February this year. Longines forms part of the Swatch Group fold, which also boasts luxury brands such as Breguet, Omega, Hamilton and Calvin Klein watches.

  • Swatch Group confident despite profit dive

Swatch Group confident despite profit dive

While Swatch Group profits nearly halved last year in a weak global watch market, the Swiss company is predicting “healthy growth” ahead.

Swatch Group owns such luxury brands as Breguet, Longines and Omega as well as marketing watches carrying its own name.

Net profit fell 47 per cent to 593 million Swiss francs (US$598 million) last year while sales came in at 7.5 billion francs.

Watch and jewellery sales dropped by nearly 11 per cent as 2015’s marked slowdown ran into last year. However, by the end of the year there was fresh movement in sales, especially in China, says Swatch.

From November to January there was “very good growth” in the segment, particularly in Mainland China, says the group, noting “a substantial improvement in operating margin.”

“Based on the positive development of the past three months, healthy growth is expected for this year.”

  • Hard half-year for Luk Fook Holdings

Hard half-year for Luk Fook Holdings

Revenue plunged by 21.5 per cent for jeweller Luk Fook Holdings (International) to reach HK$5.5 billion (US$709 million) for the six months to September 30.

Its interim results also show a drop of 31.5 per cent in overall same-store sales for the period.

However, its overall gross margin improved by 5.3 points to 28 per cent as a result of a relatively high gold price and higher gemset jewellery sales mix. Because of this, the gross profit decreased by only 3 per cent to HK$1.5 billion.

Mainland China accounted for 54.6 per cent of total profits, an increase of 12.8 points.
With a lacklustre market, retail revenue in Hong Kong plunged by 33.4 per cent to $2.642 billion, while the wholesale business shot up by 51.1 per cent to $361.6 million because of an increase in scrap gold sales as well as wholesale rough diamonds.

Luk Fook says a relatively high gold price saw gold sales fall more than expected.

During the six months, the group added 27 Lukfook shops worldwide, including 24 in China (nine of them licensed shops), a self-run shop in both Macau’s casino district and New York, and  a licensed shop in Seoul. This brought its total to 1455 Lukfook shops (up from 1412 at the same time last year), spanning Australia, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Korea, Macau, Singapore and the US, as well as nine 3D-Gold shops (up from four) on the mainland.

The group says it has been striving to diversify its product mix, and since 2010 has been trying to expand its mid- to high-end watch business. At the end of September is was the authorised dealer of 34 watch brands including Audemars Piguet, Bulova, Burberry, Bulgari, Emporio Armani, Eterna, Frederique Constant, Longines, Omega, Oris, Rado, Tag Heuer, and Victorinox Swiss Army.

For the six months, the watch business contributed revenue of HK$104.49 million down from HK$119.39 million for the same period last year, representing 1.9 per cent of the group’s total revenue, a 12.5 per cent decrease.

Looking ahead, the group aims to continue to develop its eCommerce business and to further strengthen cooperation with eCommerce platforms in China. At the end of September, the group had 15 online sales platforms in China, including JD.com, Suning.com, Tmall.com and VIP.com.

  • Government fine watch shop over Aishwarya Rai photo

Government fine watch shop over Aishwarya Rai photo

The photograph below is from a Longines advertising campaign, and features arguably India’s most famous Bollywood star, Aishwarya Rai.

Some might consider it elegant, others “hi-so” in certain parts of Southeast Asia. But in Malaysia, religious zealots have fined a non-Muslim watch retailer for displaying a poster in-store featuring this same Aishwarya Rai photo.

According to Malaysian mainstream media, someone from the Kota Baru Municipal Council considered the photograph too “sexy” – an “offence” the beleaguered retailer has supposedly committed more than 10 times since the 1990s.

    Aishwarya-Rai-Longines

Swee Cheong Watch & Pen Co owner Lee Kum Chuan’s latest bureaucratic punishment came to light when he went to obtain a business licence from the council to open a new store in Aeon Mall, his third outlet in Kota Baru.

“When I went to MPKB to apply for a business permit for the new shop, I was told to settle the fines for the offence committed in KB Mall,” he told The Star in Kuala Lumpur.

“I was hit with a total RM2000 (S$668) in fines, but the amount was reduced to RM400. I had to pay the sum before I could get the new permit,” he said.

In a nation where family members of the Prime Minister are allegedly siphoning off hundreds of millions of dollars of state funds to spend on luxury goods, movie productions, condominiums and aircraft, prompting investigations in a dozen or so countries, law-enforcement officials consider it damaging to community standards for a fully dressed Bollywood actress to promote watches. At least that’s how it seems.

    Shop ‘raid’

MPKB enforcement officers “raided” the new Swee Cheong Watch & Pen shop in Aeon Mall on Monday, ordering the “offensive” posters be removed from display.

“The posters were supplied by our manufacturers,” Lee told The Star.

The issue has sparked wider concerns about the application of a dual justice system in Malaysia in which hudud laws – and their applicable punishments – apply to Muslims, and more conventional laws apply to Chinese, Indian and other ethnicities. (In Malaysia, ethnic Malaysians are born Muslim and face physical punishment if they try to renounce their religion). Hudud is defined by Wikipedia as “an Islamic concept: punishments which under Islamic law (Shariah) are mandated and fixed by God”.

Kelantan Malaysian Chinese Association secretary Datuk Lua Choon Hann says the harassment of the watch retailer follows the council taking action against hairdressers for attending clients of a different gender.

“The government has proved yet again that its repeated claims that the hudud enactment will have no bearing on non-Muslims are nothing but mere fallacy,” he said in a statement this week.

“Based on the summonses issued by local councils (in Kelantan), MCA wants to raise awareness of the motives to remove clauses in the Federal Constitution that protect the rights of non-Muslims and Muslims against punitive criminal actions based on religious precepts,” he said.
