    Lulu opens new hypermarket concept in Abu Dhabi

    LuLu Group launched a new hypermarket concept and revamped store design at The Mall in World Trade Center Abu Dhabi on Monday.

    LuLu’s 148th store was inaugurated by Aldar Properties chief executive officer Talal Al Dhiyebi along with LuLu Group chairman and managing director Yusuff Ali M.A., executive director Ashraf Ali M.A. and CEO Saifee Rupawala.

    Situated within Abu Dhabi’s central business district, the store has more than 100,000 square feet area.

    Yusuff Ali said the newly launched hypermarket significantly adds to the portfolio of LuLu Hypermarket chains. “LuLu has been the shopping partner of different nationalities and we will continue to preserve this identity with our new store. This new hypermarket introduces a newly improved design and space, which will further strengthen the world-class shopping experience.”

    Talal Al Dhiyebi welcomed the opening of LuLu Hypermarket. “Aldar has an enviable portfolio of retail assets including malls and retail community centres throughout Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. We constantly review our retail mix to ensure we provide residents and visitors alike with the right balance of brands. This hypermarket, along with the nine other new brands that have opened at The Mall so far this year, expands the existing mix of retailers and will drive further footfall while responding to local resident demand.”

    10 new hypermarkets, China expansion plans

    Yusuff Ali said the group saw tremendous growth opportunities in Abu Dhabi where 10 new hypermarkets are in the construction stage.

    “It will be operational within the next 18 to 24 months. This includes Al Falaha, Reem, Khalifa City, Sadiyat, Beda Zayed etc.”

    Two more hypermarkets will be opened in the coming weeks  – one in Umm Al Quwain and Saudi Arabia  – that will make total number of outlets to 150.

    LuLu also plans to enter the retail scenario in China where it has sourcing and logistics facility since 2000. A memorandum of understanding on co-operation on various areas of mutual interest was signed recently between Lin Yi, Party Secretary of Communist Party of China, Yiwu, in Zhejiang province and Yusuff Ali.  As per the MoU, LuLu will increase its yearly exports from China which stands currently at $220 million to $300 million. 

    Apart from this, LuLu will also look into the possibility of investment to set up Hypermarkets in Yiwu and other major cities at an investment of $200 million.

    The globally renowned jewellery retail chain  expanded its presence in the Malaysia by opening its second showroom, located in  Lulu Hypermarket, Capsquare Mall, Jalan Munshi Abdullah, Kuala Lumpur.This is  as part of their mega expansion plan for this financial year as committed rapid  expansion across. The Showroom was inaugurated by Datin Paduka Seri Rosmah  Mansor wife of YAB Dato' Sri Mohd. Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak, Hon.  Prime Minister of Malaysia in the presence of Mr. John Paul Alukkas, Executive Director, Joyalukkas Group, many local dignitaries and VIP’s.

    Joyalukkas’s first foray into Malaysia was in 2014, with the opening of the biggest jewellery showroom in the country at the heart of Kuala Lumpur at Jalan Masjid India.

    Lulu Group Indonesia has opened its first hypermarket, in Jakarta.

    Based in the UAE, the Lulu Group plans to invest US$500 million to set up 10 hypermarkets in Indonesia over the next three years.

    Its first Lulu hypermarket was officially opened by Indonesian President Joko Widodo in the presence of Governor of Jakarta Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, Indonesian Trade Minister Thomas Trikasih Lembong, UAE Ambassador to Indonesia Ahmed Abdullah Al Mussali Al Awadi, Indonesian Ambassador to UAE Husin Bagis and other ministers and dignitaries.

    In the Cakung sub-district of East Jakarta, the hypermarket covers more than 200,000 sqft (18,580 sqm).

    Lulu Group chairman Yusuf Ali says the group also plans to set up a central logistics and warehouse centre in Jakarta.

    “We also plan to set up contract farming to ensure a continuous supply of high-quality products and to support the Indonesian agriculture sector.”

    The group has 126 stores (some in India) and more than 38,000 employees.

    First Lulu Group Malaysia hypermarket opening date set

    The first Lulu Group Malaysia hypermarket is scheduled to open in February 2016, the Middle Eastern retailer has confirmed.

    Lulu currently operates 118 hypermarkets and shopping malls in the Middle East and India and positions itself offering quality products, competitive prices and high level customer service. It is ranked by Deloitte as one of the top 10 fastest growing retailers in the world.

    The company confirmed this week during a luncheon hosted by Malaysia’s prime minister that he first hypermarket will open in February 2016 at Jalan Munshi Abdullah in Kuala Lumpur.

    Yusuff Ali Ma, chairman and MD of Lulu Group said the company will initially invest RM1.3 billion (US$300 million) in rolling out 10 hypermarkets during the next two years and gradually expand to all parts of Malaysia.

    “Today the whole world knows about Malaysia’s economic stability, investor friendly approach, liberalised policies and world-class infrastructure and we are confident about our success here,” he said.

    “Our hypermarkets encompass both supermarket and department store formats and we intend to bring a whole new world of shopping to the residents of Malaysia.”

    Yusuffali said Malaysian staff would be trained in the Middle East so as to replicate the levels of service and expertise the brand is renowned for.

    Lease agreements have been inked with retail developers including Greenhill Resources SdnBhd (Setia City Mall), KLIA Properties (for a new project in Bangi) and PNB Commerce (Perling Mall in Johar Baru). Other hypermarkets will open in Kalandhan Kotabaru, Shaa Aalam, Ipoh, Malaka, Penang and Kuala Tringanu.

    “Works of other hypermarkets have already started with some having completed 60 per cent and some others 70 per cent” he said.

    Plans $500mn investment in the country over the next five years

    The first LuLu Hypermarket in Indonesia will be opened in Jakarta by the year-end as the group has announced plans to invest $500mn in the country over the next five years.  The announcement came during the visit of Indonesian President, Joko Widodo to Abu Dhabi. He visited LuLu Hypermarket along with a high-level delegation at Khalidiyah Mall in Abu Dhabi. “With an initial investment of $300mn in the first phase, we plan to open some 15 hypermarkets by the end of 2017 and a central logistics and warehousing facility in Jakarta.

    These projects are likely to generate more than 5,000 job opportunities for Indonesians and help train them at all levels” said MA Yusuffali, LuLu Group managing director. The fact that we are going to Indonesia with our Halal Hypermarket concept, is giving us the encouragement to look for a wider market segment there” Yusuffali said. Apart from Jakarta, LuLu intends to open hypermarkets in Bandung, Solo, Semarang, Surabaya and Yogyakarta. “We also plan to set up contract farming to ensure continuous supply of high-quality products and support the Indonesian agriculture sector,” Yusuffali added.

    The Indonesian president is on a five-day state visit to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, to boost the country’s ties with the three countries, particularly on investment, trade and Indonesian migrant worker protection.

    Coordinating Minister of Economy Darmin Nasution, Trade Minister Thomas Lembong, Minister of National Development Plans Sofyan Djalil, State Secretariat Minister Pratikno, head of the Investment Coordinating Board Franky Sibarani and Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung were also part of Widodo’s delegation.  The Indonesian president was given a rousing welcome at the LuLu Hypermarket by Yusuffali; Saifee Rupawala, CEO; Salim MA, director; Rajmohan Nair, director – LuLu (Far East Operations); and a large number of Indonesian expatriates.

    President Widodo and the accompanying delegation were taken to a guided tour of the hypermarket by Yusuffali who briefed him about specialties of the retail store. The president later said his visit to LuLu Hypermarket was to see Indonesian products mainly agricultural products and asked Yusuffali to import more products from villages and towns in Indonesia.  A LuLu release said Widodo inquired about the prices as well of the various Indonesian products imported to Abu Dhabi.

    The LuLu chain currently operates some 117 stores across the UAE, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Egypt, and India.
