  • Sa Sa sales drops in HK, Macau

Sa Sa sales drops in HK, Macau

Sa Sa International sales slipped 2.2 per cent in the latest quarter, with same-store sales in Hong Kong and Macau down 3.7 per cent. The company says that while the transaction volume of mainland tourists rose 5.8 per cent in the three months to December 31, transactions by locals fell 5.2 per cent. However the average sale to tourists fell by 6.1 per cent and just 0.2 per cent to locals.

Sa Sa International’s retail and wholesale turnover in markets outside Hong Kong and Macau (including Mainland China, Singapore, Malaysia and e-commerce) increased by 1.3 per cent in the third quarter.

“[Hong Kong] consumer sentiment remained sluggish due to the weaknesses in RMB exchange rate and stock market under the continued shadow of the Sino-US trade war,” said chairman and CEO Simon Kwok in a stock exchange filing.

“In addition, the new e-commerce law passed by the Chinese government in August came into force early this year and made daigou traders more cautious in running their businesses. The group’s sales performance was affected and negative growth was recorded in both retail sales and same store sales in the Hong Kong and Macau markets in November and December.”

Kwok said that since the launch of the Hong Kong section of the Express Railway Link, the Group’s SaSa stores located in the Hong Kong West Kowloon station and the neighbouring Tsim Sha Tsui district have been reporting satisfactory sales performance. However, the increased influx of mainland tourists via the new Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge were mainly sightseeing trippers with limited purchasing power and barely contributed to the group’s overall sales in Hong Kong.

“Nevertheless, the group believes the two mega infrastructure projects will attract more mainland travellers with higher consumption when they are gradually consummated. The group remains optimistic towards the outlook of Hong Kong and Macau markets in the middle to long run under the favourable development of the Greater Bay Area.”

Kwok said Sa Sa International will strengthen promotional efforts to boost traffic and sales in physical stores to offset a decline in the online-driven daigou business.

“Digitalisation and information technology enhancement will be sped up to improve operational efficiency and shopping experience. In addition, the group will seize the opportunities brought by the Greater Bay Area to achieve sustainable business development for the group,” he said.

  • SHISEIDO X SIRIVANNAVARI Princess Hanayaka Collection

SHISEIDO X SIRIVANNAVARI Princess Hanayaka Collection

Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana, in her capacity as Creative Director of SIRIVANNAVARI, has graciously designed a special makeup collection “SHISEIDO X SIRIVANNAVARI Princess Hanayaka Collection”. Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana is in charge of every design step, from meticulously selecting the color schemesand different shades for the beauty productsto designing the packaging.

The princess used the graphics and drawings from her previous fashion collections to create elegant and graceful new designs. The whole process took over 2 years of her dedication.

Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana, in her capacity as Creative Director of SIRIVANNAVARI, graciously shares her thoughts on the “Princess Hanayaka Collection”:

“SIRIVANNAVARI has always wanted to create the beauty products that can fully answer the needs of women in Asia. This is also what SHISEIDO wants as a premium makeup brand that understands the needs of Asian women well. That is how the collaboration of this collection started. I am very glad that we both share the same intention, which is to create what will enable the beauty of women in Asia to glow from inside and out naturally. For this collection, my intention is to create the beauty products that are compact, easy and convenient to apply. The colors in the palette must be beautiful and highly flexible for various combinations of mix and match for different occasions, from daytime natural look to nighttime glamour. One palette can be applied for eyes, cheeks, and lips makeup while the texture of the cosmetics must make it easy for different color combinations. I chose all the color schemes and different shades for this collection myself based on what color combinations I think will best bring out women’s beauty. I then used those colors to work with the graphics and drawings inspired by previous SIRIVANNAVARI collections to design the packaging. The drawings of rice ears, bees, and lovebirds are used as the main designs. When combined with a Japanese touch, the lines and feels become perfect for the packaging designs of this collection.”

The collection Princess Hanayaka, meaning “a woman whois vivacious and as ravishingly beautiful as a princess” consists of 4 beauty products, which altogether create the perfect makeup: from blush to lipsticks, and from face illuminator to eye color.

Korean cosmetics firm The Face Shop has lost a trademark infringement case filed against it by French luxury brand Louis Vuitton. The infringement case relates to Face Shop’s collaboration with American brand My Other Bag, known for its parodies of luxury products. LV has unsuccessfully pursued My Other Bag for damages in American courts.

Seoul’s Central District Court has ruled The Face Shop to cease trading in products featuring Louis Vuitton designs and pay KRW50 million (US$44,080) in fines.

The Face Shop failed in its defense that their products were a parody due to the low market profile of My Other Bag in Korea and the difference in how The Face Shop used LV designs compared with My Other Bag’s parody products.

  • Estee Lauder launches mobile training via YouCam

Estee Lauder launches mobile training via YouCam

Using Perfect Corp’s YouCam, Estee Lauder has introduced mobile-based AR training for its beauty advisers internationally.

Its ART (augmented reality training) is the world’s first such education program. Using interactive live streaming, it allows the company’s more than 17,000 beauty advisers to engage in real-time training and product briefings via their mobile devices.

Beauty advisers will be able to interact with instructors, virtually try featured looks, watch presentations and ask questions.

Estee Lauder will also be able to track attendance, engagement and overall performance of its trainers and participants.

“We believe this is a turning point in beauty education,” says Estee Lauder global brand president Stephane de La Faverie.

The training initiative builds on two other technology projects launched as a result of the Estee Lauder-YouCam partnership. In April, Estee Lauder used YouCam for the launch of Pure Color Love lipstick, allowing customers to virtually try all 30 shades in 30 seconds. It has since rolled out Virtual Try On on more than 800 devices in stores and on the YouCam app for its global makeup franchises.

This month, Estee Lauder introduced YouCam “Look Transfer” technology as part of an influencer launch event for Pure Color Envy Paint-On Liquid Lip Color. The technology recognises the makeup shades used on models in an advertising campaign, allowing consumers to recreate the model’s look via Virtual Try-On. This will debut in stores and through the app next year.

The YouCam Makeup app can be downloaded free from the App Store and Google Play.
