Lazada to tackle counterfeit Korean products more seriously

Lazada has pledged to remove any counterfeit South Korean goods from its platform in a Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Korea Intellectual Property Protection Agency (KOIPA). It is reportedly the first time a Southeast Asian e-commerce company has reached an agreement with the Korean IP regulator and reflects the growing popularity of Korean beauty and fashion products online across Asia.

Korean brands online and considered at risk from counterfeit products include Etude House, Innisfree, Laneige, Mamonde and 3CE.

“The combined followers for [those brands’] Lazada flagship stores are more than 200,000,” Gladys Chun, general counsel and head of government affairs at Lazada Group said.

“Laneige, Mamonde, Innisfree and 3CE were top search terms in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam during the recent Lazada 11.11 Shopping Festival.”

Lazada has undertaken to remove any counterfeit goods from sale on its platform when alerted by brand owners, once it has confirmed authenticity. Sellers caught trying to sell copy goods on its site face blacklisting.

“Such measures to curb illicit trading of goods on Lazada are aimed at boosting the confidence and preserving the trust of shoppers on our platform,” Chun said.

“At Lazada, we respect and collaborate with rights holders in safeguarding their IP through a combination of proactive and reactive measures. It is incumbent on us to create that trusted space for shoppers and brands, giving them the peace-of-mind that we will always be acting in their best interests.”

South Korean beauty brand Mamonde has expanded into the US via the Ulta retail chain.

This marks the brand’s first foray outside its home market and the company expects the exclusive retail partnership to be the first step of a broader international foray.

“We’re delighted to be the exclusive US brick and mortar retailer for Mamonde, with many additional items especially developed for Ulta Beauty,” said Penny Coy, Ulta VP of merchandising, prestige skincare and fragrance.

The new Mamonde K-beauty skincare collection ranges in price from US$7 to US$38, and is available in select Ulta stores nationwide from this week.

The complete collection is also available online at Ulta.com.

After launching into Singapore via e-commerce this year, Korean beauty brand Mamonde has opened its first-ever global flagship store at Takashimaya Shopping Centre.

It is decorated with blooms (both real and illustrated) giving it the air of a sensorial floral studio, as reported. The design inspiration comes from the Mamonde Garden in Korea where the brand harvests its organic ingredients.

As well as wooden shelves and counters stocked with makeup and skincare products, there is a corner Mask Bar complete with a sink where customers can try out Mamonde’s specialty clay packs or sleeping masks. There is also a Korean eyebrow makeover service.

Owned by AmorePacific, the skincare and cosmetics brand was launched in 1991.

Korean beauty products brand Mamonde has launched an e-commerce site on Lazada to introduce its skincare and makeup products into Singapore.

Mamonde’s USP is using flower extracts in its products. Camellia, hibiscus, honeysuckle, lotus and magnolia blooms are hand-picked and frozen or heat dried, with the active ingredients then being extracted.

There are plans to also open a physical store in Singapore eventually, says Amorepacific, which also owns the brands Etude House, Innisfree, Laneige and Sulwhasoo.

“Launching digitally first in Singapore was a deliberate move that allows us to observe consumer purchasing habits before scaling up operations in the market,” says Amorepacific Asean regional head Robin Na.

“While the beauty industry in Singapore is mature, we believe that consumers there are still hungry for new brands.”
