LVMH Explores Sale of Iconic Fashion Brand Marc Jacobs Amid Strategic Refocus

Rumors are swirling around LVMH’s Marc Jacobs label, as the luxury giant engages in discussions with interested buyers, including Authentic Brands Group, known for their acquisition of Reebok, and WHP Global. Sources close to the negotiations, who wished to remain anonymous due to the sensitive nature of the talks, suggest that a deal could be on the horizon.

While Authentic Brands has declined to comment, WHP Global has yet to respond. Adding to the mix, Bluestar Alliance, the current owner of Brookstone, is also vying for the Marc Jacobs brand, which analysts estimate could fetch around $1 billion, according to a recent report by the Wall Street Journal.

Neither LVMH, Marc Jacobs, nor Bluestar Alliance provided comments regarding the report from the WSJ. Previously, in 2024, Bloomberg revealed that LVMH was looking into strategic options for the Marc Jacobs brand after attracting interest from potential buyers, though the company denied such claims at that time.

Founded by American designer Marc Jacobs in 1984, the brand is celebrated for its vibrant and eclectic designs that marry high fashion with street style. In a pivotal moment for both parties, LVMH appointed Jacobs to oversee Louis Vuitton in 1997 and subsequently acquired a stake in his own label.

According to the Journal, a deal might be finalized soon, provided that discussions do not stall. This potential offloading of Marc Jacobs aligns with LVMH’s recent efforts to streamline its brand portfolio. Last year, the luxury conglomerate sold Off-White—initially established by Virgil Abloh—to Bluestar Alliance, although the sale price was not disclosed.

In another notable move, Stella McCartney, who previously sold a minority stake of her brand to LVMH, reacquired that stake this year, just five years after the luxury group’s investment. McCartney has pledged to continue advising LVMH’s chief executive, Bernard Arnault, on sustainability issues—a topic she passionately champions.

The luxury retail sector has been a hotbed for dealmaking recently, particularly in Europe. In a significant move, Prada acquired Versace from Capri Holdings in a staggering $1.4 billion deal, highlighting the competitive and dynamic nature of high-end fashion.

While LVMH’s second-quarter sales, which encompass iconic products like Louis Vuitton handbags and Moët & Chandon champagne, fell slightly short of market expectations, analysts remain optimistic. The group’s shares have risen, buoyed by signs of recovering demand in the critical Chinese market, a beacon of hope amid challenging conditions.

Analyst Adam Cochrane from Deutsche Bank noted that, despite the second-quarter results lacking brilliance, there were “glimmers of hope” on the revenue horizon. French luxury brands continue to navigate a tricky landscape, grappling with economic downturns and the looming specter of U.S. import tariffs.

    “The Marc Jacobs” is launched

A new era of Marc Jacobs is coming. Marc Jacobs is launching a new affordably priced label called “The Marc Jacobs.” The line will be introduced for pre-fall 2019. According to WWD, which saw an image from the line’s new look book, The Marc Jacobs will feature such items as colourful rugby sweaters, corduroy pants, and accessories.

The designer also hired Russian stylist Lotta Volkova to style the look book, which was shot by Hugo Scott.

While not much else is currently known about the new “democratically priced” label, a spokesperson for the brand did tell WWD that more images would be published in May – and that the line is part of a collection that also includes a “Runway” component.

On Instagram, Jacobs acknowledged the existence of the new collection, writing that the image of the line was leaked.

“Consider it a taste of things to come,” he wrote, before referring to the collections as “fantastic and fresh.”

Although there has been no confirmation, The Marc Jacobs may resemble the former lower-priced Marc by Marc Jacobs label – which was discontinued in 2015.

The announcement of the new brand comes after increasing speculation that the designer would leave his namesake brand amidst declining sales.

In the beginning of the year, it was announced by Business of Fashion that the LVMH-owned company Jacobs would close its London store, as well as other European brick-and-mortar locations.

This year the designer also announced the re-release of the Redux Grunge collection, a collection of 1993 looks that got him fired from Perry Ellis, and a collaboration with Dr Martens to create a range of limited-edition boots.

LVMH sales soar as shoppers return to luxury

LVMH sales surged 15 per cent in the latest quarter to €9.88 billion (US$10.477 billion).

That was nearly €400 million more than analysts had been expecting, with the result driven across all of the luxury group’s business units.

Fashion and leather goods, which account for more than half the company’s turnover, rose 15 per cent during the quarter. That compares with static growth the same quarter last year. Fendi and Louis Vuitton were singled out by analysts as strong performers, with Celine, Kenzo, Loewe and Berluti also showing progress.

LVMH’s leather and fashion brands also include Dior, Emilio Pucci, Fendi, Givenchy, Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, Moynat, Rimowa and Thomas Pink.

‘Selective retailing’,  the group’s second-largest division, had been dragged down by DFS in prior quarters, offsetting a strong performance by Sephora cosmetics chain, observed Deborah Aitken, an analyst with Bloomberg Intelligence. But the latest quarter it showed improvement of 11 per cent. Sephora continued to gain market share globally and recorded double-digit revenue and profit growth for the quarter.

“This could be an important turnaround,” said Aitken.

Liquor – including brands such as Cape Mentelle, Chandon, Cloudy Bay, Dom Pérignon, Glenmorangie, Hennessy, Krug, Moët & Chandon and Veuve Clicquot – was the second best performing sector, up 13 per cent organically. Hennessy was a star performer.

Sales of watches and jewellery also rebounded, rising 11 per cent. Bulgari continued to gain market share and Tag Heuer successfully launched its new Connected Modular 45 watch.

And the perfume and cosmetics business grew sales by 12 per cent.

Fung Global Retail observed that Parfums Christian Dior reported good growth and Guerlain launched a new women’s fragrance called Mon Guerlain during the quarter. Parfums Givenchy benefited from the success of lipstick lines, which saw rapid development in Asia. In addition, the Kat Von D brand launched exclusively in January 2017 at Sephora in France.

    Managing expectations

While the company was clearly pleased with its results it did warn shareholders to keep their expectations modest, pointing out the growth had come against a 2016 quarter when the industry was struggling with Paris terror attacks. It said such levels of growth should not be expected for the full year.

LVMH shares rose to a record in Paris after the results were announced.

The LVMH figures will set the standard for a raft of luxury retail earnings due to be released in the coming days. Prada reports results today and Kering, parent of Gucci, on April 25.

  • LVMH will expand to eyewear business

LVMH will expand to eyewear business

Luxury brand group LVMH is thinking about taking its eyewear business in-house.

This could be a further blow for Italian eyewear group Safilo, which lost the Armani licence in 2013 and those for the Kering Group labels (Alexander McQueen, Bottega Veneta, Gucci and Saint Laurent) at the end of 2014, reports CPP-Luxury.com.

Italian investment bank Mediobanca has published a report about Safilo, owned by Dutch investment fund Hal, focussing on its announcement that its licence agreement with Celine has been terminated while its contract with Christian Dior has been extended until 2020. The licence for Celine’s eyeglass collections – the LVMH label joined Safilo’s portfolio in 2012 – ends on December 31.

While the licence agreement for the design, production and distribution of eyeglasses and sunglasses for Dior and Dior Homme, also part of LVMH’s galaxy, has been extended until the end of 2020, Mediobanca says the extension is for three years only, not for seven years as was the case for the previous contract, renewed in September 2010.

The bank’s analysts noted that the standard renewable licence contract is for five years.

“We believe markets are much more volatile than in the past, and renegotiating contracts on a more frequent basis may be to the advantage of both parties,” says the bank. “But we think this could also signal a change in LVMH’s approach as the group has the financial strength to internalise its eyewear business, as Kering did a few years ago.”

LVMH has been managing the eyewear collections for its leading brand, Louis Vuitton, internally for several years.

Mediobanca estimates the sales for Celine and Dior eyeglasses collections are worth respectively €40 million (US$41 million) and €200 million. As well as these, there are the sales for the eyewear lines of Fendi, Givenchy and Marc Jacobs, all licensed to Safilo. Altogether, LVMH brands are worth €350 million in annual revenue for the eyewear group, equivalent to nearly 30 per cent of its total revenue, which Mediobanca pegs at €1.2 billion.

The bank report also highlighted the Safilo portfolio’s “marked reliance on one single client”, plus the weakness of its own brands.

  • How to grow for Luxury brands

How to grow for Luxury brands

Luxury brands need to use new technologies and offer experiences for their customers, the second Luxury Society keynote event in Shanghai has been told.

UCO Cosmetics CEO Arthur Zhang told the event that the early-stage eCommerce model of simply providing a platform for selling products online is dead.

He said key technologies being experimented and improved upon in China include augmented reality, virtual reality and live-streaming.

“The millennial generation in China, which already numbers about 300 million people, seeks experiences and emotional connection – they are not just bystanders,” DLG China partner/MD Pablo Mauron told the audience of more than 150 luxury-industry brand executives. “As a result, live-streaming has become a medium for them to express themselves.”

He told how brands such as Maybelline, Montblanc and Swarovski are taking advantage of these new opportunities.

Underlining the key message of the event that eCommerce is changing, CEO Thibault Villet of luxury fashion eCommerce platform Mei.com told how a live-streamed show in collaboration with TMall resulted in 65 per cent of the products featured quickly selling out.

    Meaningful data

Social customer-relationship management (CRM) makes highly targeted messaging and engagement possible, the event was told by Four Seasons Hotels Asia Pacific director of marketing communications John Hamilton. He said the luxury hotel chain has been gaining meaningful data about its customers, which in turn has driven growth. In the past year, through trial-and-error and optimisation, the group has defined a CRM-led content strategy on WeChat.

Celebrity and key-opinion-leader partnerships can make a big impact in China, said East Entertainment commercial director Qing Dai, who spoke of her experience of partnering luxury brands with appropriate celebrities. One of Easy Entertainment’s most successful was in linking up Cartier with singer/actor Lu Han.

Baidu GM for East China Wan (Grace) Zhang said Cartier was the most-searched luxury watch brand among the generation born between 1990 and 2000, linked to Cartier’s collaboration with Lu Han.

Other speakers at the event included Four Seasons Hotel Pudong (Shanghai) GM Arthur Ho, writer Casey Hall of Women’s Wear Daily, Digital Luxury Group founder/CEO David Sadigh and MD for China Pablo Mauron, Baidu senior project manager Di Fu and Sephora China digital manager Vanessa Qian.

Attendees included representatives of Alexandre de Paris, Baume & Mercier, Bottega Veneta, Bulgari, Cartier, Chanel, Chaumet, Conde Nast, De Beers, Dior, Hublot, Loewe, LVMH, Marc Jacobs, Massimo Dutti, Michael Kors, Montblanc, Nars, Net-a-Porter, Nike, Sephora, Shiseido, Swarovski, TAG Heuer, Tiffany & Co and Vacheron Constantin.

The brands include Baby-G, Edifice and G-Shock.

While Casio distributes products to retailers in Indonesia already, only FJ Benjamin has the full range as exclusive retailer for all categories, CEO Nash Benjamin said at a Casio media event at a Jakarta nightclub venue attended by more than 1000 guests.
