  • Marina Bay Sands Casino Hires Law Firm for Money Transfer Probe

Marina Bay Sands Casino Hires Law Firm for Money Transfer Probe

Marina Bay Sands has hired a law firm to investigate employees transfers of more than $1 billion of gamblers’ money to third parties.

Dispute resolution and international arbitration specialist Davinder Singh Chambers LLC has been hired for the investigation, according to a «Bloomberg» report citing unnamed sources.

In addition to numerous high-profile lawsuits in banking, debt structuring and fraud, Davinder Singh in Singapore is most notably known for representing Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in a number of defamation cases.

In 2019, MBS faced a lawsuit from patron Wang Xi who alleged that the casino transferred $6.7 million of his money to other gamblers without his knowledge.

The lawsuit was subsequently settled out of court in June with non-admission of liability from both sides and full reimbursement of Wang’s money by MBS.

Marina Bay Sands (MBS) continues to work closely with its regulators to monitor MBS’s compliance with all legal obligations, the casino said.

Previously, law firm Hogan Lovells reviewed more than 3,000 letters of authorization from 2013-2017 for fund transferals from patrons to third parties totaling about $1 billion.

It was found that there were multiple instances where employees did not comply with proper standards, filling payment details on pre-signed or photo-copied authorization forms, according to the report, as well as cases where original documents were destroyed.

Of the total amount transferred, $268 million was based on multiple authorization letters that «bore signatures that appeared to be similar» and another $561 million was transferred by a concentrated group of employees – both of which led to red flags raised.

Following Wang’s case, MBS faced increased scrutiny from the likes of the Singapore police and the Casino Regulatory Authority which said it would continue to exercise close oversight to ensure that MBS’ measures are effective.

But local authorities are not the only bodies stepping up scrutiny against Las Vegas Sands’ Singapore unit. The U.S. Department of Justice also launched its own probe, including involvement of the casino’s former compliance chief to provide an interview or documents on money laundering facilitation” and any abuse of internal financial controls.

  • The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands hit record high in 2018

The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands hit record high in 2018

The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands has capped its most successful year ever, breaking revenue records in 2018 and strengthening its leading position as the luxury shopping destination in Singapore. The luxury mall, which enjoys an occupancy of 95.4%, rang in a record mall revenue of US$179 million last year, a 7 per cent rise against the same period in 2017 – by far its best performance since opening. In 2018, retail tenant sales at The Shoppes jumped 19 per cent to US$1,898 per square foot from the preceding year.

The Shoppes also kept its top position in tourism shopping, capping a record year to represent an estimated 25 per cent of the tax-free tourist market in Singapore. This is based on industry metrics that track tax-refunded tourist receipts.

John Postle, Senior Vice President of Retail, Marina Bay Sands, said, “2018 has been an exceptional year for the mall, as we not only achieved our highest sales revenue in history, but also solidified a leading position in tourism shopping. This is so rewarding, given the competitive retail landscape and growth of online shopping.”
The performance is also the result of an ongoing retail remix strategy that started in 2012, which saw the mall double its footprint with luxury brands in the form of duplexes, as well as expansion into luxury childrenswear.

This strategy, coupled with attractive programming such as late-night shopping, in-store exclusives, and one of the most generous loyalty programmes in Singapore, has resulted in 120,000 shoppers walking through the doors of the mall daily. This includes locals as well as its biggest tourism markets of China, Indonesia and Japan.

Jan Moller, Country Managing Director, Singapore & APAC Sales, Global Blue, said, “As one of Asia’s leading shopping destinations, The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands continues to outperform other luxury malls in Singapore to own the greatest share of inbound tourist spend in the luxury sector in 2018.”

  • Gentle Monster opens second store in Singapore

Gentle Monster opens second store in Singapore

South Korean eyewear brand Gentle Monster has opened a second store in Singapore at Marina Bay Sands. The launch, coming more than a year since the opening of Gentle Monster’s first store in Southeast Asia at Ion Orchard, is part of the brand’s “13” project. According to the brand, the project is “based on a story of an extreme ecological change the Earth would have to endure in the future due to a tilt of its axis, caused by the Moon being pushed farther away from planet Earth.”

The concept serves as a metaphor to describe modern-day people who seem “obsessed and overwhelmed by the invalid information they receive daily.”

To celebrate the opening of the new location, Gentle Monster has teamed up with fashion blogger Yoyo Cao to come up with a special edition of the brand’s popular Cobalt sunglasses model. The limited edition eyewear features a trendy tear drop-shaped frame along with details such as a twisted bridge and an inner template engraved with the word “Yoyokulala”.

The Gentle Monster x Yoyokulala eyewear will retail at S$368.

The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands enjoys sales rise

Revenue from The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands rose 4.5 per cent during the third quarter, reaching US$44 million, according to the integrated resort’s latest results announcement. That, together with rising food and beverage sales (up 15.2 per cent to $53 million) and improved hotel revenues helped offset a decline in gaming takings, said to be affected by a decline in VIP playing. Third-quarter earnings were down 52 per cent to $419 million for the quarter.

Las Vegas Sands’ regional third-quarter earnings were up by 6 per cent to US$1.28 billion, thanks to the strengthening Macau business.

  • Apple Singapore to open two more stores

Apple Singapore to open two more stores

Recruiting is underway for the new Apple Marina Bay Sands flagship store – and another.

Advertising on Apple Singapore’s jobs portal promotes roles believed to be for two new stores in the city.

Construction has been under way for many months on the Marina Bay Sands flagship.

Like the nearby Louis Vuitton Maison ‘island’ the new Apple store will emerge from the water, linked to the shopping centre by an underwater passageway. The location in which it is being constructed was previously tenanted by a nightclub.

In the photo above, the store’s location is the dark “island” construction to the right. On the left is the Louis Vuitton Maison.

The location of the second flagship has been the subject of endless speculation for some months, despite it being – in the words of a senior Singapore retail industry executive last month – “one of the worst kept secrets in town”.

Despite the complexity of the construction and approval processes for the Apple Marina Bay Sands store, public information has been scant with development approvals we found online only relating to the closure of the nightclub and the rezoning of the space to retail. Apple is notoriously secretive about its store plans until just days ahead of their opening.

The store is believed to have been designed by Foster + Partners in London, which was responsible for the Orchard Road flagship store and others recently opened in Milan and Macau. The company is also working on another, controversial, store planned for downtown Melbourne, Australia.

Meanwhile, Apple Singapore’s jobs portal is advertising 12 retail positions for a new store, which it describes as being located in “Singapore East”. There is no indication of commencement dates for the roles, but these roles are most likely to be for a third store, planned for the new Jewel shopping centre under construction at Changi Airport and managed by CapitaLand.

Pop by the Burberry Conservatory Pop-Up at Marina Bay Sands

Following Dubai and Seoul, the next stop on the Burberry Conservatory pop-up world tour is Singapore.

Modelled after quintessentially English greenhouses, the space will offer exclusive Belt models, namely limited editions in medium and small sizes sewn with rainbow belt detailing and equestrian knight embroidery. For customisation, a sample of exclusive belts with rainbow and grommet details will be available, bolstered by the brand’s now-signature monogram service.

Another model will be the Pin clutch with four colourways in leather.

Open from June 21 to July 8, the Burberry Conservatory will be open at The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands.

  • Manolo Blahnik strengthens its expansion in Asia with Bluebell Group

Manolo Blahnik strengthens its expansion in Asia with Bluebell Group

In May 2018, Manolo Blahnik has opened its doors to the public at the triple tower complex Marina Sands Bay in Singapore, strengthening its presence in Asia with Bluebell Group.

“Marina Bay Sands is one of the most recognized places in Singapore. It has been at the forefront of uniquely combining innovative architecture, luxury shopping and leisure, so I am very excited that now Manolo Blahnik will be part of this special concept,” said Kristina Blahnik, the label’s chief executive officer.

The retail space was designed by the architect Nick Leith-Smith, who has signed several collaborations with the brand. For this store, Nick has blended Blahnik’s identity with local architecture, materials and elements of the cultural context. The aim was to create a retail space that could communicate with locals in their own codes. The store incorporates a mix of architectural styles seen around Singapore.

The opening follows a series of activities to expand the brand’s presence in Asia. The partnership with Bluebell Group aims at “optimizing and restructuring” Blahnik’s distribution in the region. Previous retail developments included the opening of two new locations in Tokyo and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Marina Bay Sands store will be the brand’s only standalone location in Singapore.
