“Marley Spoon experienced strong growth over the term of W23‘s investment and has matured into an established listed company, and no longer fits squarely within the investment criteria of W23,” a Woolworths spokesperson said.

“Woolworths Group and Marley Spoon remain committed to the continuing five-year strategic growth alliance that covers marketing support and customer origination programs as well as co-operation on logistics and supply chain operations.”

Earlier this year, Marley Spoon chief executive Rolf Weber said the business’ growth had been boosted by the impact of the pandemic – despite supply chain pressures from drought, bushfires, floods, food shortages, and the global health crisis.

Weber attributed the business’ impressive retention rates in part to the continued innovation of his team, including the launch of ready-to-heat meals earlier in 2020.

“Our numbers are very strong and customer retention is extremely high, even as the impact of the pandemic has begun to decrease across Australia,” says Weber. “Ready-to-heat meals had been in product development prior to the pandemic, however, the launch was expedited by lockdowns and the demand from the influx of news customers. With many Australians returning to the office in recent months, the number of ready-to-heat meals sold continues to impress and opens future opportunities and streams to reach new customers.”

Marley Spoon commits to 100pc renewable power by end of 2022

Marley Spoon Australia is joining the growing number of businesses committing to power their operations entirely by renewables, with the meal delivery kit aiming to make the switch by the end of 2022.

The business achieved carbon neutrality earlier this year, and aims for the next five years to be focused on further reducing its carbon impact, as well as rethinking its packaging, sustainable sourcing, and food waste.

“Taking action to minimize our impact on the planet cannot be delayed any longer,” said Marley Spoon Australia chief executive Rolf Weber.

“At Marley Spoon, we are committed to significantly decreasing our carbon impact across our operations. Since our launch, we’ve tried to consciously grow without further increasing our footprint and are continuously implementing actions to measure, reduce and, where necessary, offset that footprint.”

Moving forward, Marley Spoon will work with climate offset specialist ClimatePartner to further its sustainability efforts through projects such as planting trees in Venezuela and Uruguay, and that provide families in Zambia with clean-burning cookstoves. To date, the business has planted 44,000 trees and redistributed 4,000 cooktops.

Marley Spoon is also working to ensure all of its packaging is ‘curbside recyclable’ by the end of 2025, in order to ensure all Australians have an equal opportunity to do the right thing when it comes to properly dispose of soft plastics.

And, the business will instigate a ‘local first’ policy in regards to food sourcing, looking to work closer with local farmers and suppliers to ensure any new ingredients added are Australian-made or grown.

“Being a sustainably conscious company is more than just recycling and reducing waste; being a sustainable business or organization is all about consistently improving,” Weber said.

“Our business model already helps customers easily act sustainably through reducing food waste and working with sustainably-focused suppliers [but] as we grow we need to continue to ensure we’re delivering a product that not only fills a need in their lifestyle, but also allows them to easily live their lives sustainably.”

Marley Spoon brings first meal kit service to Tasmania

Marley Spoon launched its meal kit service in Tasmania on Wednesday, making it the first service of its kind available on the Australian island state.

The delivery service will initially cover the greater Hobart and Launceston areas, but Marley Spoon said it will expand to more locations throughout the state in the near future.

“Tasmania is known as one of Australia’s premier food destinations, but now locals can benefit from having some of the best products delivered straight to their doors,” Marley Spoon Australia managing director and co-founder Rolf Weber said on Wednesday.

“We’re excited to bring stress-free, delicious and sustainable cooking to even more Aussie households.”

Woolworths announced a strategic partnership with the meal kit company last month, along with a $30.05 million investment.

The meal kit service launched in Australia in 2015 and is available nationally. Customers in Tasmania can pre-order their boxes from today, with the first deliveries to take place on August 5.
