Automaker McLaren opens first showroom in Vietnam

British automaker McLaren opened its first official Vietnamese showroom in HCMC on Thursday. The McLaren HCM reseller, located at the Deutsches Haus building in HCMC’s District 1, is invested and run by S&S Group. With an authorized reseller in Vietnam, McLaren said it would deliver the newest supercars for the Vietnamese elite class.

At the opening ceremony for the showroom, Charlotte Dickson, head of Asia Pacific at McLaren, said Vietnam is the firm’s 41st market.

Nguyen Thuy Huong, co-founder of S&S, said HCMC was chosen as the location for McLaren’s first showroom as it is deemed an ideal destination with much potential for brand development.

Through its authorized reseller, McLaren is expected to introduce to the Vietnamese market with several types of supercars, including the 765LT. Besides the showroom, S&S Group would also provide car repair and maintenance services.

McLaren, founded in 2010, is a subsidiary owned by the wider McLaren Group. Its headquarters and manual assembly plant are in Woking, Surrey County, England.

Besides the main product of supercars, the company also makes sports cars with more affordable price tags.

  • McLaren Denies Being Acquired By Audi

McLaren Denies Being Acquired By Audi

Earlier in the day, reports had emerged that Audi had closed a deal to acquire the entire McLaren group. Audi had been exploring an acquisition of the McLaren Formula 1 team to facilitate its entry into the pinnacle of motorsport in 2026 when the new engine formula come into the sport. It had been open to the full acquisition of the entire McLaren Group that gives it access to the McLaren supercar brand. Audi, of course, already has a controlling stake in Lamborghini and the Volkswagen Group has been looking to enter the world of Formula 1 with its Audi and Porsche brands. Due to the pandemic, McLaren had faced many losses and was forced to lay off 1,200 workers.

Even though its F1 team has been on a revival and its financials have improved with external funding, last month the supercar maker also lost its longtime CEO Mike Flewitt who ran the main motorcar brand while its Applied sciences division was already sold.

Volkswagen Group has been looking to enter the world of Formula 1 with its Audi and Porsche brands

While Audi seems keen, McLaren has come out and rubbished all these claims. “McLaren Group is aware of a news media report stating it has been sold to Audi. This is wholly inaccurate and McLaren is seeking to have the story removed. McLaren’s technology strategy has always involved ongoing discussions and collaboration with relevant partners and suppliers, including other carmakers, however, there has been no change in the ownership structure of the McLaren Group,” the company said in an official statement.

ly denied the report which originated from Autocar. “As part of our strategic considerations, we are constantly looking at various cooperation ideas,” said an Audi spokesperson in response to the Autocar report. Porsche is looking at a partnership with Red Bull for its powertrains division while Audi had been planning to acquire a team and McLaren was the one on top of its list. If it can’t get McLaren, it will be looking at either Sauber or Williams which are now the last of the three independent teams left in the sport.

For Audi, McLaren is very attractive. Apart from being the third most successful F1 team in history, it is a storied supercar brand. Its team is also now back on the upswing with a great set of drivers in Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo. What’s interesting is if an acquisition were to happen what will happen to the McLaren brand which counts F1 core to its identity?

“With a keen focus on lifestyle, we design for the betterment of the customer experience. With McLaren’s advanced technology and our top-of-the-line materials, our gear can tackle the most arduous excursions and still effortlessly translate into daily life.”

Packing aerodynamic automotive inspiration: The Orbit Small Packing Cube is designed for quick journeys

McLaren Automotive Design Director Rob Melville commented: “When I first met with Victor to define the collection we quickly realised that we each brought a shared creative vision for what we wanted to achieve.

“At McLaren we focus on articulating a clear design language and materials selection which combines and leads into our car’s performance. We wanted to capture those aspects with Tumi so we have spent a great deal of time working to analyse and refine every aspect of this collection.

“The result is something that I am incredibly proud of and that I believe will elevate the owner’s experience while serving as a reminder that, like our cars, it’s about enjoying the journey and not simply the destination.”

McLaren Racing Chief Commercial Officer Mark Waller commented: “McLaren strives to push the boundaries of design, performance and perfection in everything it does, whether on the road or on the track. This collaboration exemplifies that spirit.

“We are delighted to be collaborating with Tumi on this collection. We look forward to seeing our race team use it around the world as we commence the 2021 Formula 1 season.”

  • McLaren Reveals The Artura Hybrid Supercar

McLaren Reveals The Artura Hybrid Supercar

After months of teasing the car, McLaren has finally revealed the Artura Hybrid supercar. It is McLaren’s first series-production High-Performance Hybrid supercar and is underpinned by the company’s philosophy of super-lightweight engineering. All-new from the ground up, the Artura presented McLaren engineers and designers with new opportunities to innovate, chief among these being how to preserve McLaren’s super-lightweight engineering philosophy when adding hybrid powertrain elements including an E-motor and battery pack.

The Artura marks the debut of the new McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture (MCLA) – through the uniquely compact HPH powertrain system to the weight of cabling used in the electrical systems (where a 10 percent reduction was achieved), resulted in the Artura having the lightest dry weight of 1,395kg. The total weight of hybrid components is just 130kg (which includes an 88kg battery pack and 15.4kg E-motor), resulting in a DIN kerb weight of 1,498kg which is on par with comparable supercars that do not have hybrid powertrains, giving the Artura a super-lightweight advantage.

At the heart of the Artura’s powertrain is McLaren’s all-new, 2,993cc twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine. With a power output of 577 bhp – nearly 197 bhp per liter – and 585Nm of torque, the dry-sump aluminum engine is compact and lightweight; at just 160kg it weighs 50kg less than a McLaren V8 and is significantly shorter, enhancing packaging efficiency.

The 120-degree v-angle of the engine, which allows the turbochargers to be positioned within the ‘hot vee’, delivers further advantages in packaging as well as contributing to a lower center of gravity. The 120-degree layout increases engine performance by reducing the pressure losses through the exhaust system and allows for a stiffer crankshaft that enables a rev limit of 8,500rpm, maximizing performance and driver engagement.

Inside with the cockpit centered around the driver, the driving mode selection – which retains separate Powertrain and Handling controls – has been moved to the instrument binnacle

Working in harmony with the new V6 is the Artura’s compact axial flux E-motor, located within the transmission bell housing. Smaller and more power-dense than a conventional radial flux E-motor, it is capable of generating 94bhp and 225Nm and boasts a power density per kilo 33 percent greater than the system used in the McLaren P1.

The Artura can go from 0-100 kmph in just 3 seconds, 0-200 kph tales 8.3 seconds while the 300 km mark is achieved in 21.5 seconds. Top speed is limited to 330kmph. The dual propulsion systems are integrated via an engine disconnect clutch, driving an all-new, twin-clutch transmission, which has been developed specifically for the Artura.

The E-motor is powered by a battery pack comprising five lithium-ion modules, offering a usable energy capacity of 7.4kWh and a pure EV range of 30km. The battery is refrigerant cooled using cooling rails, and the assembly – including a power distribution unit that transfers battery power from the rear of the vehicle to the ancillaries in the front – is mounted on a structural carbon fiber floor.

The Artura is designed with full Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) capability and can be charged to an 80% charge level in just 2.5 hours with a standard EVSE cable. The batteries can also harvest power from the combustion engine during driving, tailored to the driving mode selected.

The Artura gets advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) including Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane-Departure Warning, Auto High-Beam Assist and Road-Sign Recognition as well as Over-The-Air (OTA) software updates.

On the design front, the Artura gets a low-nose, cab-forward, high-tail stance and the drama underlined by the signature McLaren dihedral doors – which open closer to the body and house mirrors that fold in more tightly – and further enhanced by the short wheelbase and low stance.

Inside with the cockpit centred around the driver, the driving mode selection – which retains separate Powertrain and Handling controls – has been moved to the instrument binnacle, which is in turn mounted to the steering column and adjusts with the steering wheel to further enhance driving ergonomics. Consequently, the steering wheel is kept clear of unnecessary switches, however, the driver is still able to adjust driving modes without taking their hands away from the wheel.

  • McLaren Artura To Make World Debut On February 16

McLaren Artura To Make World Debut On February 16

McLaren Automotive will bring the full force of its expertise in hybrid powertrain engineering with the introduction of the new Artura. The company revealed its plans to bring the new high-performance hybrid car last year and now it’s closing in on its world debut. The company has revealed that the Artura hybrid supercar will make its world debut on February 16.

The Artura marks the beginning of a new era for the pioneering British company. Building on the expertise in electrification first showcased in the McLaren P1 hybrid hypercar unveiled in 2012 and more recently the Speedtail Hyper-GT, which entered production this year as McLaren’s fastest ever car with a top speed of 403 kmph, the Artura is McLaren’s first High-Performance Hybrid series-production supercar.

The new Artura marks the debut of an all-new compact twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine, designed to combine with an electric motor in a new lightweight hybrid powertrain that retains the performance benefits of McLaren’s larger capacity V8 engines and has the additional attraction of improved torque response at low engine speeds to deliver scintillating acceleration. The Artura can also run on electric power alone for everyday emission-free urban journeys.

The first car to be built on an all-new, platform architecture optimized for electrification and designed and manufactured in the UK at the McLaren Composites Technology Centre, the Artura furthers McLaren’s commitment to super-lightweight engineering principles that have their roots in motorsport. The additional mass of the High-Performance Hybrid system, for example, has been largely offset by the application of weight-saving technologies throughout the chassis, body and powertrain.

Additionally, the McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture (MCLA) at the heart of the Artura not only enables the car’s class-leading weight advantage, it is also the base for the dynamic excellence inherent in every McLaren.

  • McLaren GT Teased Ahead Of Its Debut On May 15

McLaren GT Teased Ahead Of Its Debut On May 15

We have seen the McLaren GT before in its prototype version and McLaren has finally teased the production spec model. The new McLaren is a Gran Tourer and the brand has decided to call it GT (without any suffix or prefix). As we are aware that McLarens are categorized into three segments- Sports, Super, and Ultimate Series, the upcoming GT will be positioned between the Sports and Super segment. In fact, McLaren has said that the GT will be slightly different having a mix of cross-country abilities and McLaren’s dynamic and agile characteristics. The McLaren GT also takes inspiration from the Speedtail.

As customary as it could be, the new teaser gives just a slight idea of its design and aerodynamics, leaving us curious about the rest. However, it reveals the silhouette and rear of the car and the outline looks pretty much identical to the 720 S. The air ducts on the bulbous rear haunches are sizeable and the tail looks angular housing the integrated spoiler. However, it gets dual exhaust pipes and different LED lights.

The McLaren GT will get a center mounted engine which is unlike other models. The engine in the question is the same 4.0-litre, twin-turbocharged, V8 engine which will be differently tuned and given it’s a GT, it’s not expected to have the outright performance of track-focused cars like the McLaren 600lt Spider or even the 720 S.The McLaren GT will make its first public appearance on May 15.

  • McLaren Took 260 Hours To Paint This 720S Spider

McLaren Took 260 Hours To Paint This 720S Spider

McLarens are always special, aren’t they? All of them look dramatically beautiful and of course, all of them are fast. But when you know that McLaren has taken 260 hours to paint one, its special quotient reaches another level. The Paint Job on the McLaren 720S Spider was done by McLaren Special Operations which is one of their internal divisions that makes special and customised models for its customers.

The gorgeous deep blue paint is brand new and was designed by mixing three colours- Cerulean Blue, Burton Blue and Abyss Black. McLaren is calling the new colour- Coriolis. The paint was applied as an addition to the Metroite Grey body. The base colour is yet another special shade designed by McLaren Special Operations for special cars and special customers.

The process involves expert painters and artists who very diligently and precisely apply the paint in such a way that the fade effects would mimic the way the car moves. The effect is subtle but instantly catches your attention. The McLaren 720S Spider is powered by a 4.0-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 motor which churns out 710 bhp and 770 Nm of peak torque. It can go to 200 kmph from standstill is just 7.9 seconds and can clock a top speed of 341 kmph.

McLaren, a British manufacturer of luxury, super high-end sports cars, is set to enter the Philippine market, completing the presence of all British car brands in the country while a huge British manufacturer will announce its huge entry into the Philippines next month.

British Ambassador Asif Ahmad told reporters that McLaren officials came here recently to talk to 3 local car distributors, who could be potential exclusive distributor of the motor racing vehicles.

According to Asif, he wrote to McLaren telling them they are the only UK car brand missing in the Philippines.

“All the top brands including Bentley, Jaguar, Rolls-Royce are all here except you. So they come here and talk to potential distributors for exclusive distributorship deals,” he said.

He hopes McLaren, which produces high end cars but more down to earth cars, would be able to set up local distributorship within the year.

Asif believes there is a market for McLaren in the Philippines because Filipinos are not just buying one type of brand. Car sales in the country has been expanding robustly. In the first quarter this year, car sales went up — percent to —- units compared to the same period last year.

McLaren, which leverages its successes in the Formula 1 and technology that promotes car racing, will all be imported from UK.

McLaren’s retail network has also expanded bringing the total number of McLaren retailers to 71 across more than 30 countries. Growth was recorded across all four of the McLaren regional business units with Asia-Pacific seeing the biggest change with 11 new retail locations opening across the region, resulting in an 80 per cent rise in sales in 2014.

North America remains the largest market for McLaren accounting for more than 30 per cent of sales, while Europe and the Middle East grew year-on-year by 10 percent and nine per cent respectively.

Aside from McLaren, Asif also mentioned that a major high-tech British manufacturer will announce its huge investment in the Philippines in the first week of July, next month.

The company, which Asif refused to identify, will bring in huge investment to establish a manufacturing operation in Batangas, which will be its second overseas manufacturing site. It is engaged in high-tech domestic electrical equipment and leading edge appliances like washing machines and dryers. Its brand is already being sold locally.

Under the plan, the company will operate in the country in three ways. It will put up its own head office, establish a very high-tech manufacturing unit, and a third party contract  local contract manufacturer.

“Combine all those together, it’s a hybrid. Three operations in one project,” he said.

The company, which has chosen the Philippines over Mexico, has already talked with Lilia De Lima, director general of the Philippine Economic Zone Authority.

“This is a huge boost for the Philippine jobs,” he said adding that its one plant in Asia has created 30,000 jobs.

“They have chosen the Philippines because of the talented pool of people. In Batangas, they don’t have problem in power supply and they have local port if they want to avoid sending things in Manila,” he said. One thing, he said, the company also cited the Philippines strong protection for intellectual property rights.

He cited the improving buying power of Filipinos to be able to afford top-end products and brands.

In addition, Asif expects more British engineering firms to participate in the huge infrastructure projects of the government.

The British Chamber is also lobbying for the government to open up the education sector to allow British universities to open schools in the country.
