Australia-based network as a service (NaaS) provider Megaport has introduced support for Google Cloud’s Partner Interconnect with its global SDN.

The new service will allow Megaport customers to provide connectivity from their facility to the nearest Google edge PoP.

Customers can select from a range of sub-rate interface speeds varying from 50Mbps up to 10Gpbs.

The Partner Interconnect service is available across the Megaport SDN, which spans over 200 data centers globally. Megaport is enabling deeper integration between the SDN and Google Cloud via its API to enable provisioning of network capacity to Google virtual private clouds.

“Scalable connectivity to Google Cloud Platform ensures that cloud-enabled applications perform to meet mission-critical business requirements,” Megaport CEO Vincent English said.

“Google Cloud brings tremendous value to the Megaport Ecosystem and empowers our customers to address a wide variety of business needs. We have been working with Google Cloud since our inception and we are excited to grow and evolve our integration to ensure the next generation of business growth.”

Megaport also recently announced a partnership with Colt Data Centre Services to allow Colt customers to access direct connectivity to a range of major cloud service providers via the Megaport SDN.

Megaport Singapore, a subsidiary of Australia’s Megaport, has entered into an arrangement to provide enterprises with direct and scalable access to Alibaba Cloud via the Megaport global SDN.

By accessing Alibaba Cloud Express Connect, a high-speed dedicated network connection that securely links customers with their VPCs through Megaport’s SDN, enterprises can scale their cloud connectivity and enable rapid provisioning of capacity to Alibaba Cloud.

From a single global account, Megaport customers can cut down latency and deploy globally on Alibaba Cloud’s network of cloud regions.

Alibaba Cloud’s customers will be able to access Megaport’s global network in more than 20 major markets in the Asia Pacific, North American, and European regions with 150 points of presence.

Alibaba Cloud will extend its edge closer to enterprises, provide consistent network performance for its customers, and expand its direct access capabilities around the world.

“Megaport’s extensive global footprint is strengthened by our partnership with Alibaba Cloud,” said Vincent English, Chief Executive Officer of Megaport.

“Direct, dedicated access to Alibaba Cloud’s services adds value to our platform. This partnership enables customers globally to directly access services from the leading cloud provider based in China. Partnering with China’s largest public cloud provider aligns with our strategy to enrich our Ecosystem and provides greater service options for our customers.”

  • Australia’s Megaport expands to Europe

    Australia’s Megaport expands to Europe

Australian interconnection upstart Megaport has long been planning to invade Europe this year.  Today they not only formally launched their elastic interconnection platform on the continent, but they revealed two acquisitions that let them hit the ground running in a big way.

Megaport has signed an agreement to buy Berlin-based Peering GmbH, Germany’s second largest IX provider. ECIX serves some 180 customers across 30 PoPs in Germany, giving Megaport immediate depth in the continent’s biggest market. The deal is expected to close in early August.

Megaport’s other M&A move gives them an immediate presence in eastern Europe via the acquisition of Bulgarian-based OM-NIX Group AD.

As one might infer from the IX part of their name, OM-NIX also specializes in interconnection, with extensive reach in Eastern Europe and especially the Balkans. Beyond the ECIX footprint, the deal adds another 18 locations to Megaport’s reach in Europe.

Put those together with 9 other locations they have been developing organically, and Megaport’s European launch will span 57 locations in 19 cities in 13 countries. The acquisitions cost them some A$3.1 million ($2.3 million) and bring in annualized revenue of A$4.5 million.

Over the past year, Megaport has expanded its interconnection footprint in markets throughout North America. The buildout has been quite rapid, and the move into Europe accelerates it even further.

While the next phase is likely more adding revenue on top of the infrastructure they have built out, I have to wonder if they won’t keep going east. It wouldn’t take much to add a PoP or two in the Middle East and India on their way back around the globe to Singapore and Australia.
