MG Astor Deliveries Begin In India

MG Motor India has commenced the deliveries for the Astor compact SUV, which went on sale in the country last month. On the auspicious occasion of Dhanteras, the Chinese-owned British carmaker has delivered the first batch of over 500 units of the Astor to customers despite the ongoing chip shortage. The company plans to deliver about 4000 units to 5000 units by the end of next month. MG is now accepting bookings for the Astor for delivery in 2022. Prices for the SUV start from ₹ 9.78 lakh for the base Style variant, and go all the way up to ₹ 17.38 lakh for the top-of-the-line Sharp (O) (all prices are introductory ex-showroom, India).

Announcing the commencement of deliveries, MG Motor India said, “After receiving a good response for Astor, India’s first SUV with personal AI assistant and first-in-segment Autonomous (Level 2) technology, MG Motor India has delivered the first batch of more than 500 vehicles to customers on the auspicious occasion of Dhanteras. This is particularly special considering the acute shortage of chips. The company is trying its best to improve the availability to meet its initial target of 4000-5000 deliveries by December end 2021.”

The Astor is one of the most tech-laden SUVs from MG which comes with a personal AI assistant and Level 2 autonomous tech with ADAS features. The SUV is available in four variants – Style, Super, Smart, and Sharp with two engine options on offer – 1.5-litre VTi-Tech petrol and a 1.4-litre 220 Turbo AT petrol. The former is a naturally aspirated unit that makes 108 bhp at 6000 rpm with 144 Nm at 4400 rpm of peak torque. The motor comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and an 8-speed CVT gearbox. The latter is a more powerful turbo petrol engine, which is tuned to produce 138 bhp and 220 Nm. It is paired with a 6-speed automatic torque converter unit as standard.

  • MG Motor India Partners With Microsoft And L&T For Data Security For New Astor SUV

MG Motor India Partners With Microsoft And L&T For Data Security For New Astor SUV

MG Motor India has announced a raft of features with the launch of the new compact SUV, the Astor, and one of the key aspects of the announcement has been the partnerships MG has closed with tech giants like Microsoft and L&T. Particularly with Microsoft, MG Motors has closed a deal for its Azure cloud computing service which has many local data centres in India – in cities like Mumbai and Noida. This means, MG’s cloud-connected features will not be pushing the data to its servers in China but will be localised.

“With data playing such a critical part in enhancing the in-car experience, we are doing our best to ensure that it is safe and protected. All the data from the car systems that we are using to power these personalized services are securely stored on the Microsoft Azure cloud platform in India,” said MG Motor India MD, Rajeev Chaba.

“MG Motors India is using our cloud computing service to store the data they collect from their customers within India itself. All customer driving data is stored on cloud servers which come with high levels of security so that you can rest easy,” said John Stenlake, Director, Automotive, Mobility and Transportation Industry, Microsoft, highlighting the security benefits.

Apart from the obvious security benefits, this also is a performance boost for the cloud-connected features as they will be more responsive thanks to the geographic proximity of the servers as they are now in India which reduces latency.

Microsoft Azure has the most localised cloud regions of any cloud computing service in the world. It has even more local regions than market leader and category inventor Amazon Web Services (AWS). Microsoft Azure trails AWS in overall global cloud compute market share but has been gaining market share over the last decade under the leadership of CEO Satya Nadella.

Nadella was the man entrusted to start Azure in 2008 and its success propelled him to the top spot of the American giant when he replaced long time CEO Steve Ballmer in 2014. Nadella has made many partnerships in India with regards to Azure, including Flipkart.

MG Motor India has also partnered with L&T Technology Services for the security and privacy of the data that’s parsed through the vehicles.  Chaba highlights that the best data privacy practices are being leveraged thanks to this partnership as the Astor generates troves of data.

“In the connected world we live in, cybersecurity, privacy and data usage are questions that occur to each one of us. This also applies to connected cars. We at L&T Technology Services are happy and excited to collaborate with MG India to provide security auditing services for your vehicles. We also ensure that any communication that happens from and in-between, the vehicle, the network and the mobile app is secure,” said Nitin Jain, global head of digital products and services L&T Technology Services.

Jain also highlighted that L&T technology services also ensure that MG Motor India complies with the latest security standards. The Astor gets level 2 autonomous driving capability and also gets a new virtual assistant which also leverages AI, apart from an assortment of unique services.

  • M&G Acquires Second Logistics Facility In Asia

M&G Acquires Second Logistics Facility In Asia

M&G Real Estate, the real estate fund management arm of M&G Investments, has acquired a $131 million (155.5 billion Won) modern logistics center close to Seoul on behalf of its core Asian property strategy managed by Richard van den Berg.

Located south of Seoul, Yongin Baegam Logistics Centre is in an established logistics cluster close to the city’s major highways. The approximately 100,000 square-meter four-story asset comprises all the characteristics of a high specification logistics center, catering to all the demands of modern occupiers. The new building tenants include established third-party logistics operators and retailers.

We are positive about the fundamentals in Asia Pacific’s logistics sector, particularly in Korea, where supply is limited and demand is strong. The relentless demand for faster delivery will push third-party logistics companies to larger, more centralized distribution centers near key transport hubs and highway interchanges, such as ours, said Richard van den Berg in a media statement on Monday.

The location will remain a key requirement as transportation typically accounts for at least half of logistics providers’ total costs. Yongin Baegam Logistics Centre will provide stable and core income to our investors said Berg.

This is the second logistics facility for the M&G Asia Property Fund in Korea after Homeplus Hub Logistics Centre, the 64,250 square-meter distribution center acquired in 2017. This purchase coincides with an uptick in consumer spending with expectations for online retailing to grow in Asia Pacific markets from 14 percent to 23 percent by 2023.

As the logistics sector matures and attracts more interest from investors, spreads between logistics and other asset classes in developed markets have narrowed and Korea is expected to follow the demand for modern well-located facilities.
