Tesla Electric Car Catches Fire After Hitting Tow Truck In Moscow

A Tesla Model 3 electric car caught fire after crashing into a parked tow truck on a Moscow motorway late on Saturday, with the Tesla driver saying he had failed to see the vehicle with which he collided.

Asked in a video published on REN TV website if he was using an Autopilot self-driving system, driver Alexei Tretyakov said he was in a drive assistance mode in which he was still holding the steering wheel.

Tesla has stood by safety claims for its Model 3 in the face of regulatory scrutiny, while documents showed the top U.S. automotive safety watchdog issued at least five subpoenas since last year seeking information about crashes involving the company’s vehicles.

Tretyakov said was driving at around 100 km (62 miles) per hour – the speed limit – when the car crashed on its left side into the stationary tow truck that he had not noticed.

Footage of the incident on state TV channel Rossiya 24 showed the car by the side of the road engulfed in flames and thick black smoke. Two small explosions occurred within a few seconds of each other and the metal frame of the vehicle was all that remained after the fire, TV footage showed.

Russia’s RIA state news agency website posted a video showing the car driving in the left-hand lane of Moscow’s ring road, known as the MKAD, before crashing into a tow truck parked by a safety fence that separates the carriageway from oncoming traffic.

Tretyakov, a financial market expert and the head of Arikapital investment company, said he broke his leg in the incident, while his two children suffered only bruises. They all escaped from the vehicle.

  • Daimler Opens Mercedes-Benz Plant In Moscow Area

Daimler Opens Mercedes-Benz Plant In Moscow Area

German automaker Daimler officially opened a Mercedes-Benz factory near Moscow on Wednesday at a ceremony attended by President Vladimir Putin, marking a rare foreign investment into Russia’s car industry. The plant in the town of Esipovo 40 kilometers north west of Moscow is the first in years to be opened by a foreign carmaker in Russia where investment into the once burgeoning auto industry dried up amid western sanctions and a stagnant economy.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Putin said the plant would produce 25,000 cars a year and that investment in the project had totaled 19 billion roubles ($291 million).

Putin said the factory, built after Daimler signed a deal with Russia’s authorities in early 2017, would employ almost 1,000 people.

Most global automakers opened plants in Russia in the first half of the 2000s, but after peaking in 2012 car sales slumped to a ten-year low of 1.42 million in 2016. The market is picking up again, and a total of 1.8 million cars were sold last year.

  • Direct Flights from Indonesia to Moscow Set to Open

Direct Flights from Indonesia to Moscow Set to Open

Indonesia has planned to open direct flights to Moscow, Russia, in a bid to attract the countrys tourists to visit Indonesia.

“Currently, we have to transit in a third country when we fly to Russia, and this could take 24 hours, whereas with direct flight, it might only take 11 hours,” Ambassador to Russia M. Wahid Supriyadi said here on Wednesday. Wahid is scheduled to hold a meeting with the management of the national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia to discuss the plan.

“Alhamdulillah, Garuda has the commitment to fly to Moscow,” he noted. Garuda Indonesia has planned to fly thrice a week to Russia, two flights from Denpasar in Bali and one from Jakarta, from August.

A data of the Tourism Ministry showed that some 85 thousand Russian tourists had visited Indonesia in 2016. The number is targeted to reach 100 thousand tourists in 2017. However, Wahid remarked that the number was still relatively small compared to Russian tourists visiting Thailand, which is about 1.5 million per year, through direct flights from the country.

“Garuda’s flight would not only carry passengers but also tropical fruits and vegetables,” he revealed, adding that these commodities were scarce in Russia. Following the European Union and the US embargo, Russia would halt import of fruits, vegetables, and dairy products from the two regions as a response.

The move would provide an opportunity for Indonesian commodities to penetrate the Russian market. “These products would have to be transported by air cargo,” Wahid pointed out, adding that Garuda Indonesia planes could carry some 5 tons of the products in one flight.

  • Garuda to Launch Jakarta-Moscow Flight in August 2017

Garuda to Launch Jakarta-Moscow Flight in August 2017

The Indonesian flag carrier, Garuda Indonesia, will launch its Jakarta-Moscow direct flight route A330-200 aircraft, which is expected to be operational in August this year.

The inaugural flight plan was established in a memorandum of understanding signed by a representative of the Indonesia Russia Business Council, Mikhail Kuritsyn, and the Director of Garuda Indonesia, Arif Wibowo, in the presence of Russian Ambassador to Indonesia, Mikhail Galuzyn, and Indonesian Ambassador to Russia, Wahid Supriyadi, on Tuesday (Feb 14).

“We are trying to accelerate the plan to be realized in August. The flight will be available three times a week,” Arif said.

He added that since the tourist traffic between the two countries continues to increase, the direct flight plan is expected to support Russias efforts to increase tourist arrivals from Indonesia to more than 100 thousand in 2017.

The number of Russian tourist arrivals in Indonesia in the first half of 2016 increased by 14 percent, while the number of Indonesians visiting Russia was about 14,000 in 2015.

Arif stated that the launch of the new flight route marks the beginning of a series of international flight network expansion programs by Garuda Indonesia in 2017.

In addition to Moscow, Garuda Indonesia will also launch a flight from Jakarta to Los Angeles (USA) via Tokyo, Japan, by mid-2017.

Meanwhile, Galuzyn noted that the direct flight would further boost the economy and tourism sectors of the two countries.

“The direct flight has become one of our main priorities in the effort to enhance the number of tourists visiting Russia,” he asserted.

We are optimistic that the new plan will open a positive opportunity not only for the tourism sector but also for the economic, social, and cultural sectors.

In 2014, Garuda Indonesia officially joined the SkyTeam global airline alliance, in which the Russian airlines Aeroflot is also a member.

Through the SkyTeam airline alliance network, all passengers can enjoy the Garuda Indonesia flight network services to more than 1,062 destinations around the world in 177 countries with 17,343 daily flights.

SkyTeam airline network services currently serve more than 655 million passengers every year.
