  • Honda Files Patents For Variable Riding Position

Honda Files Patents For Variable Riding Position

Honda has filed a series of patent applications in Japan for what seems to be a new technology offering two different riding positions on the same motorcycle. The patent images show a Honda CBR1000RR which can have two different riding positions – an aggressive and sporty riding position, as well as a more upright and relaxed riding position. The key elements in the technology are the ability to move the bars and the screen, which provides the ability to raise the handlebars from the normal clip-on height because they are attached to extended tubes that run parallel with the fork legs.

According to the patent application, the position can be changed by the press of a button. Also movable is the windscreen, which is also a simple operation. The top section of the front fairing is attached to a scissor-style frame that easily allows the rider to move the screen upward and into a more vertical position, if needed, for a more touring friendly riding position from an aggressive, sporty riding position. What is clear from the patent drawings is that this is not a complex mechanism that will require a ground-up re-engineering of the bike.

It’s still not clear whether Honda will actually introduce a future CBR1000RR Fireblade with this new innovative technology, or if there will be an altogether new model which will showcase this variable riding position. Either ways, expect some sort of concept bike which Honda is likely to display, either later this year, or at one of the motorcycle shows next year which will showcase this unique new feature.

  • Triumph’s First Electric Motorcycle Will Be The TE-1 Project

Triumph’s First Electric Motorcycle Will Be The TE-1 Project

Triumph Motorcycles could well be the newest player among premium motorcycle brands to get on to the electric motorcycle game after Harley-Davidson’s LiveWire electric motorcycle project. The British motorcycle brand has announced a new project called the TE-1 which is a collaboration between Triumph, Williams Advanced Engineering, Integral Powertrain Ltd’s e-Drive Division, and WMG at the University of Warwick. Additionally, the group will receive funding from the UK Government’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV). The actual model development is still some time away, but it is an important announcement nevertheless and will bring in exciting times in the electric motorcycle space in future.

“This new collaboration represents an exciting opportunity for Triumph and its partners to be leaders in the technology that will enable the electrification of motorcycles, which is driven by customers striving to reduce their environmental impact, combined with the desire for more economical transportation, and changing legislation. Project Triumph TE-1 is one part of our electric motorcycle strategy, focused on delivering what riders want and expect from their Triumph, which is the perfect balance of handling, performance, and usability,” said Nick Bloor, Triumph CEO.

Triumph Motorcycles will lead the TE-1 project, providing expertise in chassis development and overall motorcycle engineering. Williams Advanced Engineering will provide lightweight battery design and integration capability for the project, while Integral Powertrain’s e-Drive Division will lead the development of the in-house electric motor with a silicon carbide inverter. WMG at the University of Warwick will help provide commercialization as well as modeling and simulations that will be based on future market needs.

“Our future product strategy is focused on delivering the most suitable engine platforms for the changing landscape of customer needs, and we see a Triumph electric powertrain as a significant requirement alongside our signature twin and triple cylinder engines,” said Steve Sargent, Triumph’s Chief Product Officer.

The TE-1 project will eventually lead to new model development, but that is still a few years away. The first phase will focus on delivering powertrain solutions in two years’ time before any specific model development takes place. What is clear is that electric motorcycles certainly seem to be taking off in earnest, and it probably won’t be too long before you get to see an electric Triumph in production form.

  • 2019 Triumph Scrambler 1200 India Launch Date Out

2019 Triumph Scrambler 1200 India Launch Date Out

Triumph Motorcycles India will be launching the long-anticipated Triumph Scrambler 1200 on May 23, 2019. The motorcycle made its global debut in last year in October 2018 and went on sale in the global marker early this year, and now the British motorcycle maker is finally ready to launch the new Scrambler 1200 in India as well. Globally, the motorcycle is offered in two variants, the base trim Scrambler 1200 XC, and a top-spec Scrambler 1200 XE. India, however, will only get the former and we have already ridden the bike and told you all about it.

The Triumph Scrambler 1200 is powered by the company’s ‘high-torque’ 1,200 cc parallel-twin engine that already powers the Thruxton R and the newly launched Speed Twin. However, Triumph has made several changes to it to make it more suited for the all-terrain nature of the bike. In the Scrambler 1200, the engine churns out 89 bhp @ 7,400 rpm and develops a peak torque of 110 Nm @ 3,950 rpm. This means the Scrambler 1200 will have more grunt with minimal throttle input, suitable for traversing broken trails and for riding off-road. The motor comes mated to a 6-speed gearbox with a torque-assisted clutch.

Both motorcycles come with superior off-road capabilities thanks to the fully adjustable 45 mm USD forks from Showa up front (47 mm for XE) and fully adjustable twin-spring Ohlins rear suspension. While the XC comes with 200 mm of travel both at the front and back, on the XE, the suspension units offer 250 mm of travel. The XE also gets gold anodized front forks compared to the black unit on the XC. Both models are equipped with piggy-back reservoirs. Furthermore, the Scrambler 1200 also comes with the first-in-segment 21-inch front wheel, along with 17-inch rear wheels, both are spoked and come shod in dual-purpose tires from Metzler Tourance tubeless tires. The bike comes with twin 320 mm discs with Brembo M50 monoblock calipers up front and a single 255 mm disc, also gripped by a Brembo’s 2-piston floating. Both bikes get switchable ABS, but the XE trim gets switchable cornering ABS.

The 2019 Triumph Scrambler 1200 also come loaded with some of the best-in-class features like – ride-by-wire, cruise control, heated grips, under seat mobile storage with a USB charging port, keyless ignition, Single-button cruise control, and torque assist clutch. Triumph has also equipped the motorcycle with its latest generation full-color TFT instrument display, with 5 riding modes – Road, Rain, Sport, Off-Road and Rider-Configurable. The classy bits include – all-LED lighting with DRL headlight, Intuitive switch cubes & 5-way joystick, illuminated backlit switches. Furthermore, the Scrambler 1200 also gets a first-of-its-kind integrated accessory fit connectivity Bluetooth module, enabling the world’s first integrated GoPro control system, ‘turn-by-turn’ navigation, plus phone and music operation. The bike comes in two color options – Jet Black with Matt Black, and Khaki Green with Jet Black.

The product will have a range of about 150 kilometres on a single charge and will have a lithium-ion battery pack which can be swapped. The top-speed has been limited to 85 kmph. While the battery and the electric motor will be imported, the battery management system and the electronic control unit were designed in house.

Delhi NCR will be the first market and Revolt Motors says that it will have online sales along with on-ground dealerships and experience centres as well. • Honda Motorcycle And Scooter India Inaugurates Its 1,000th Dealership

Honda Motorcycle And Scooter India Inaugurates Its 1,000th Dealership

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India recently inaugurated its 1,000th dealership in India at Zirakpur in Punjab. The 1,000th Honda Exclusive Authorised Dealer is a 4S facility. With an aggressive expansion plan, Honda has added 3,300 touch-points in the last five years across the country. At present, HMSI has a total of 6,000 touch-points in India, one of the highest for a two-wheeler manufacturer. Recently, Honda also achieved another milestone, with customers in north India crossing the 60 lakh sales mark in the company’s 18th year of operations. The 60,00,000 sales milestone has been driven by demand for Honda two-wheelers in the states of Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and in Delhi and Chandigarh. For Honda, the first 10 lakh customers were added in the initial 9 years (from 2001 to 2010), but the next 50 lakh Honda customers took the same duration (2010-2019). The most recent 10 lakh Honda customers were added in a little over a year.

Minoru Kato – President & CEO, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd. said, “I am delighted to be present here on milestone 1000th Honda dealer inauguration. Honda also fulfilled its commitment of providing 6000 network touchpoints to our valuable customers by the end of current financial year. This landmark achievement brings Honda closer to the hearts of its customers, who have reposed their trust in the brand.”

Honda’s increasing customer base in India is attributed to the growing acceptance of scooters in the region. And the growing sale of scooters in the past decade has also led to a huge spurt in automatic scooters contribution to overall two-wheeler sales. In the last 10 years, automatic scooter sales have nearly doubled from 10 per cent to 19 per cent. This trend is attributed to more women joining the workforce, faster expanding road network in rural areas, and increasing demand for unisex two-wheelers which fulfil the needs of every family member. HMSI currently is the largest seller of scooters in India, and the Honda Activa is one of the highest selling two-wheelers in India.

Japanese manufacturers pitch new products at Indonesia motorcycle show

Japanese motorcycle manufacturers are promoting their products at the Indonesian Motorcycle Show 2016 in Jakarta, with Suzuki Motor Corp. using the biennial event to unveil its latest models.

Suzuki took the wraps off the GSX-R 150 and GSX-S 150 sport motorcycle models at the five-day show, which runs until Sunday, giving the Indonesian public an opportunity to see its latest products before their official launch in the first half of 2017.

“We are very proud to introduce the GSX-R 150 and GSX-S 150 for the first time in the world,” Kazumasa Watanabe, manager of Suzuki’s motorcycle marketing group for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, said at the show Wednesday.

He described the Suzuki GSX-RR technology, on which the new models are based, as the company’s “highest achievement” in the GSX series that helped Suzuki win the 12th round of MotoGP, the world’s most prestigious motorcycle race, in Britain on Sept. 4.

Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. also unveiled its Kawasaki Ninja 650, while Honda Motor Co. released the prices of its All New Honda CBR250RR, introduced last July, which are $4,900 for the standard model and $5,300 for the model equipped with an anti-lock braking system.

In the scooter category, Yamaha Motor Co. introduced the three-wheeled Tricity 155 in Indonesia after it was launched globally five months ago.

Indonesia’s three-wheeler market is still very new, but Mohammad Masykur, assistant general manager for marketing at PT Yamaha Indonesia Motor Manufacturing, was optimistic about its future.

“The presence of Tricity in Indonesia will give a new color to the Indonesian automotive world,” he said, adding that the company’s “Leaning-Multi Wheel technology will make a difference on the Indonesia road.”

  • Newcomers try to tap into Indonesia’s niche motorcycle market

Newcomers try to tap into Indonesia’s niche motorcycle market

New players in the premium motorcycle business are optimistic that they can tap into the Indonesia market despite the sluggish sales the country has been experiencing.

Garansindo Euro Sports, the sole distributor of Italian luxury motorcycle maker Ducati and French Peugeot Scooters, lined up several new models at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) in Serpong, Banten, in an attempt to entice people in the middle- and upper-income brackets.

Garansindo became Ducati’s sole distributor in the country in January, taking over from PT Supermoto Indonesia, while Peugeot Scooters made its Indonesian debut in 2015.

“People tend to buy new vehicles in August, plus economic conditions seem better now,” Garansindo managing director Dhani Yahya told The Jakarta Post on Monday.

Indonesia’s economy rose to 5.18 percent on an annual basis in June from a yearly rate of 4.91 percent in March, fueling optimism that recovery is under way. However, the country’s motorcycle sales dropped 27.6 percent year-on-year in July, with 305,153 units sold, a more than 40 percent slump from the previous month.

Astra Honda Motor (AHM), the country’s leading motorcycle manufacturer, said, however, that the domestic market for premium bikes was still promising and expected its marketing of its big bike model BR250RR to strengthen its grip in that segment.

At the country’s biggest auto expo, Ducati rolled out four new motorcycles in the 959 Panigale, Hyperstrada, Hypermotard 939 and Xdiavel S models, priced at Rp 658 million (US$50,008), Rp 570 million, Rp 515 million and Rp 988 million, respectively.

Apart from the new models, Dhani said that it was banking on the Ducati Scrambler Sixty2, which made its Indonesian debut in April, to meet demand for entry-level premium motorcycles.

The Scrambler Sixty2, named after the year when Ducati first produced its Scrambler model, is equipped with a 400 cc air-cooled engine and is priced at Rp 219 million, discounted to Rp 199 million for GIIAS visitors.

“We see the price as affordable for middle-income people between 30 and 40 years old, such as managers and entrepreneurs wanting to upgrade their style,” Dhani said.

In May, Garansindo opened up its flagship store in the elite Kemang, South Jakarta, said to be Ducati’s largest dealership after its outlet in New Delhi, India.

The 3,000 square-meter flagship store is also equipped with Ducati’s one-stop service, spare parts provider and certified used-bike-reseller in the country.

Garansindo also relies on the Peugeot Django 150 model to tap into Indonesia’s growing premium scooter market. At the expo, Garansindo showcased three kinds of Django 150: the Django Sport, Django Evasion and Django Allure, priced at Rp 40 million, Rp 41 million and Rp 43 million, respectively.

Indian motorcycle manufacturer Royal Enfield, which entered Indonesia in January, used the GIIAS opening last week to introduce its new Himalayan motorcycle. The brand currently has four types of motorcycle sold in Indonesia — Bullet, Classic, Rumbler and Continental GT — with prices ranging from Rp 64 million to Rp 172 million.

“We are currently focusing more on introducing the brand and encouraging people to try and feel the riding experience using our products,” said Distributor Motor Indonesia managing director Ade Sulistioputra, whose company is the sole distributor of Royal Enfield in the country.

Meanwhile, Russian heavy sidecar motorcycle manufacturer IMZ-Ural, which made its Indonesian debut at the expo, is upbeat that it can expand its market in Indonesia after achieving overseas success in several regions such as the US, Australia, Europe and South America.

Ural Indonesia CEO Michael Sofyan said the company targeted premium motorcycle buyers in the country as its segment, hoping that Ural’s unique design, which was initially tailored for Russian military officers, would lure them into purchasing its products.

“We are trying to reach big bike communities first,” Michael told the Post.

Fifty-nine-year old Affandi Permana, a visitor at Ural’s booth at the expo, said that he was very eager to purchase the maker’s military-styled Gear-Up model, which is priced at Rp 405 million. “The Gear-Up model represents masculinity,” Affandi said.

  • Royal Enfield to enter the Thailand motorcycle market

Royal Enfield to enter the Thailand motorcycle market

Royal Enfield, when not posting stupendous growth figures in the Indian two-wheeler market, continues to rapidly add to its small but expanding export presence. The Chennai based brand presented its products at the Bangkok Motorcycle Show and announced plans to aggressively enter the Thai market in mid-size motorcycles. Royal Enfield defines the mid-size motorcycle as bikes between 250 and 750cc in displacement. Royal Enfield showed off its entire range at the Thailand International Motor Expo in Bangkok including the Bullet 500, Classic 500, Classic Chrome and the Continental GT. Royal Enfield also showed off its new range of gear and accessories for the Thai market.

    Royal Enfield Continental GT Black

Arun Gopal, head of international business for Royal Enfield said, “We have pioneered and grown the mid-size motorcycle category in India. With over 50 per cent year-on-year growth in the last five years, our ambition today is to lead and grow the underserved middle weight segment globally and this growth will largely come from markets like India such as Latin America and South East Asia, given their size and comparable commuting trends. Thailand with its already established leisure motorcycling culture and presence of several riding communities and enthusiasts, blends perfectly with Royal Enfield motorcycles that has exploration and adventure at its core. Thailand is among the largest two-wheeler markets in the world and a very important one for Royal Enfield. With highly evolved consumers, Thailand is the most evolved country in South East Asia for leisure motorcycling. With a large commuter base, this market has enormous potential to upgrade to the next level of motorcycles, if there are enough attractive product choices. With our modern classic bikes, Royal Enfield is well poised to fill this gap and catalyze the shift to mid-size motorcycles in Thailand.”

General Auto Supply Co. Ltd (GA) will be their dealer in Thailand and it will start retail operations in Thonglor, Bangkok shortly. GA will also work on expanding the aftermarket abilities of the brand in the Thai market.

Royal Enfield has been exporting motorcycles for a long time but the push to expand both volumes and markets is a recent move. The company exported roughly 2 per cent of its production last year but that is set to change as the company goes towards its goal of becoming the world’s largest mid-size motorcycle maker.
