    MPT has Myanmar’s fastest mobile speeds

    Myanmar’s MPT has the fastest internet speeds among the nation’s major mobile operators, according to a new report from Ookla’s Speedtest service.

    An analysis of the results of user-initiated tests over the Speedtest Android and iOS mobile apps indicates that MPT had an overall speed score of 11.45 during the first half of the year.

    The speed score is calculated by factoring in both a user’s download and upload speeds, with the former contributing to 90% of the final score and the latter constituting the remaining 10%.

    MPT had average download speeds of 12.41Mbps for the period covered in the report, and average upload speeds of 7.47Mbps.

    MPT is expanding its mobile network in collaboration with Japanese partners KDDI and Sumitomo.

    The operator’s closest rival, Telenor Myanmar, achieved a speed score of 10.51, based on download speeds of 10.97Mbps and upload speeds of 6.46Mbps. Ooredoo achieved a score of 6.23 with download speeds of 6.61Mbps and upload speeds of 2.87Mbps.

    Over the six month period, Myanmar’s average mobile download speeds reached 12.03Mbps and upload speeds reached 7.4Mbps after a sharp jump in both averages between April to June.

    MPT launches FTTH in Yangon

    Myanmar’s MPT has announced the launch of FTTH services in parts of the nation’s largest city Yangon.

    The new service offers speeds of 5Mbps for 69,000 kyat ($50.64) per month, or 10Mbps for 109,000 kyat per month.

    The operator is offering the service on a 12 month contract and charging an installation fee of 150,000 kyat, rising to 200,000 kyat after a promotional period ends.

    MPT has deployed the services in parts of downtown Yangon, and plans to expand the rollout to other areas of Yangon and to Mandalay early next year and to other major cities across the nation throughout that year.

    “We are pleased to offer customers a truly enriching internet experience in their homes at greater value,” MPT chief commercial officer Reizo Umeda said.

    “The new fiber-based service will provide fast and reliable connectivity to online services, from web browsing, social media, streaming videos, gaming as well as those that require higher bandwidth capacity for connecting multiple devices simultaneously. Also as thanks to our valued customers, we are launching this service with an attractive introductory installation price, which we hope residents will take advantage of.”

    MPT entered a partnership with Japan’s KDDI and Sumitomo for both its fixed and mobile operations as part of the 2014 liberalization of Myanmar’s telecoms sector.

    Telenor, MPT apply for Myanmar 2600-MHz auction

    Telenor and Myanmar state-owned operator MPT have both lodged expressions of interest regarding taking part in Myanmar’s first spectrum auction in October.

    The operators are among the potential bidders for 40 MHz of 2600-MHz spectrum reserved for mobile broadband services.

    Multiple ISPs and other companies – including Yatanarpon Teleport and Myanmar Telecommunication Network – have also lodged expressions of interest regarding the auction. In total, 22 companies have applied.

    Of the total number of applicants, 20 have been accepted as potential bidders, while the applications of two were rejected due to those companies lacking the required network facilities service license.

    Selected bidders will need to meet financial and technical prerequisites, including providing a $500,000 deposit, to qualify.

    By contrast, Telenor Myanmar’s main rival Ooredoo Myanmar has elected not to participate in favor of waiting for a separate 1800-MHz auction, which the operator expects to take part later in the year.

    During the auction the 40 MHz of 2600-MHz spectrum will be divided into two 20 MHz licenses, and this will itself be divided into three separate regions. Bidders will not be allowed to win more than 20 MHz in any one region, and will only be allowed to secure spectrum in up to two regions.
