  • Korean-licensed Mumuso sells Chinese products, found guilty of ‘misleading’ consumers

Korean-licensed Mumuso sells Chinese products, found guilty of ‘misleading’ consumers

After inspecting 2,273 items sold by Mumuso Vietnam Import Export Company Limited in the country, the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) said 99.3 percent was imported from China.

Earlier, the company, whose product range includes beauty, healthcare, fashion accessories and home appliances, said that it was a legitimate Korean enterprise that has outsourced production to China.

It had also said then that the product designs are made by a South Korean company.

The inspectors said local laws were violated despite the firm’s explanation saying that Mumuso is a trademark established in Korea and its products are manufactured at its headquarters in Shanghai, China.

The inspectors also said Mumuso put out a lot of content expressing its products’ connections to Korea, could show no documents or other proof for such information, especially relating to the origin and the technology used.

The company was violating the Vietnamese Competition Law by engaging in unfair competition with similar firms selling Chinese-origin products. The content they provided has led to wrong understanding among customers about the chain and its products, the inspectors said.

They said that the company had provided incomplete and inaccurate information to Vietnamese consumers, who’d assumed that the products were Korean.

Mumuso does not have a single store in Korea.

It has committed several other violations including not having a Vietnamese label on their products and providing inaccurate information about its website to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, inspectors found.

It had registered neither the franchising associated with the Mumuso trademark nor its head office engaging in commercial activities. It had also not informed the MOIT about its promotion programs.

The ministry has instructed relevant agencies to deal with all the violations that the company has committed under various laws of Vietnam.

In Vietnam since late 2016, Mumuso has rapidly developed in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, with 27 stores in central locations.

It sells many low cost products, starting from as little VND22,000 (less than $1) per unit.

Mumuso Thailand opens door to franchisee

International lifestyle retailer Mumuso Thailand plans to open up to 20 franchised stores by the end of next year, and up to 150 in the next five years.

From Shanghai, the company promotes lifestyle products with a Korean flare. The brand moved into Thailand in August with a Mumuso lifestyle shop opening in The Mall Nakhon Ratchasima. It now has seven outlets, the latest being its first franchised outlet for Thailand.

Mumuso (Thailand) strategic director Pakom Supawarapong says the company sees a growth opportunity in Thailand, including specialty stores.

“It’s not all about e-commerce these days as the trend for specialty stores is something we all need to be aware of,” says Pakorn. “We expect our annual sales to reach THB2 billion [US$62.5 million] in the next five years. We target to achieve THB200 million in annual sales this year.”

Mumuso (Thailand) president Amnuay Supawarapong says the brand has more than 600 branches in 150 cities. In Thailand, it has stores in Ayutthaya, Bang Saen in Chon Buri, Phitsanulok, Samut Sakhon, Siam Square One, Supanburi and The Mall Nakhon Ratchasima. The Phitsanulok shop, which opened this month, is the company’s first franchised outlet in Thailand.

About 3000 different items of merchandise at Mumuso lifestyle shops cover children’s products, apparel, kitchen items, bags, stationery, skincare and cosmetic goods. Pakorn says the company has set aside THB150 million for this year, focusing on promotional activities at its stores.

  • Mumuso Vietnam accused of fraud

    Mumuso Vietnam accused of fraud

Fashion and lifestyle goods retailer Mumuso Vietnam has been accused of selling Chinese goods as Korean products.

The allegation surfaced on South Korean SBS News, which reported that the Shanghai-based company has been duping customers into thinking it is a South Korean store chain selling South Korean goods. The news channel also said Mumuso’s registered office in Seoul could not be found.

Legal representatives of Mumuso Vietnam say the company registered its brand under the protection of the Korean Intellectual Property Office without any production activities there. It also has a branch in Shanghai, redesignated as its headquarters.

Mumuso authorised its Shanghai office to take over its business activities, including production and brand management.

Mumuso’s business in Vietnam is under a franchise contract.

“Mumuso wants to strengthen its brand overseas before returning home, where competition is fierce,” says Mumuso Vietnam director Nham Phi Khanh.

He admits that no Mumuso merchandise has undergone quality inspections in Korea, but is imported directly from China. “Our products meet standards and regulations set by the Drug Administration of Vietnam and the Department for Food Safety and Hygiene under the Ministry of Health.”

Mumuso Vietnam has 27 outlets, mostly in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The stores sell a wide range of goods, from cosmetics to household items, all labeled as “Mumuso – Korea”, with product information mainly written in Korean and Chinese, and prices ranging from VND22,000 (US$1). All come with a “Made in China” tag.

The Mumuso retail concept is loosely based on that of another Chinese company Miniso, which has drawn criticism for marketing its products as Japanese.

Meanwhile, Mumuso Vietnam has announced it intends to increase the number of its outlets in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi to 80.
