  • Ford Mustang Mach-E Production Delayed Because Of Global Semiconductor Shortage

Ford Mustang Mach-E Production Delayed Because Of Global Semiconductor Shortage

Ford is delaying shipments of Mach-E electric vehicles due to the global chip shortage that’s causing problems across all manner of industries. The company told affected owners their deliveries will be delayed by at least six weeks.

In an effort to make up for the delay, Ford is offering an additional 250kWh worth of charging on the house, which should be good for around 700 miles of driving. That doubles the complimentary charging Mach E owners receive with their EV. The delay affects EVs that were scheduled for production between July 5th and October 1st.

“We’d like you to know that while we’re working nonstop to deliver your very own Mustang Mach-E vehicle, we project your vehicle delivery will be delayed by a minimum of six weeks,” Ford wrote in an email to customers. “Once your vehicle receives the required chip, your vehicle status will be updated, and you’ll receive an email with an estimated week of delivery.”

The semiconductor shortage has impacted production of a broad range of products in recent months. Along with EVs and other vehicles, game consoles, graphics cards, smartphones, Apple products and other goods have been affected. Ford cut vehicle production earlier this year due to the problem.

Ford Mustang Continues To Be World’s Best-Selling Sports Coupe

The iconic Ford Mustang has gained the title of the best-selling Sports Coupe in the world for the fourth year in a row. Ford has sold 113,066 units of the Mustang in 2018 grabbing a market share of 15.4 per cent in the global sports car segment. Sales are partially attributed to the Bullitt limited edition which according to the folks at Ford, is one of the hot-selling models in the range. According to a report published by IHS Markit, the Mustang has also remained the best-seller in the Sports Coupe segment in the United States.

Speaking about the success of the model, Jim Farley, President- Global Markets, Ford said, “We broke the mold when Ford launched the Mustang 55 years ago. Nothing says freedom, the wind in your hair and the joy of driving like Mustang; it’s an icon. The roar of its V8 on a spring day, there’s nothing better. No wonder it’s the most popular sports coupe in the world.”

The Ford Mustang has been critically acclaimed as one of the best American muscle cars which also handle well. Ford sells the Mustang in 146 markets across the globe. Since 2015, Ford has sold more than 500,000 units of the sixth-generation Mustang. In the international markets, the Ford Mustang is sold with three engine options- a 2.3-litre Four-Cylinder Ecoboost engine, a 3.7-litre V6 motor and the range-topping 5.0-litre V8 engine. In India, only the top-spec Mustang is sold with the 5.0-litre V8 engine under its hood which develops 396 bhp at 6500 rpm and 515 Nm of peak torque at 4250 rpm.

  • Ford Mustang EcoBoost High Performance Package Unveiled

Ford Mustang EcoBoost High Performance Package Unveiled

Think Ford Mustang and the first thing that you associate the muscle car with is a massive 5.0-litre V8 motor. But even though Ford offers only the V8 in India, there exists a variant of the Mustang with four cylinders and this model is a slightly extreme version of the standard EcoBoost Mustang. Under the bonnet, the Mustang gets the same 2.3-litre turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder petrol engine as on the standard model but it now makes 330 bhp and 475 Nm, which is just 20 bhp more. There is a 6-speed manual or a 10-speed automatic transmission available as well. The 0-100 kmph sprint is done in less than 5 seconds and the car has a top speed of 250 kmph. The rear axle ratio is now shorter at 3:55, which is also one of the reasons for quicker acceleration.

The Mustang 2.3-litre high performance package also gets a few more updates such as a variable sports exhaust system, limited slip rear differential, a bigger inter-cooler and updated steering and ABS. The other addition is the active exhaust with quad tips which offer a better aural experience than the regular model. Ford will also be offering an ‘EcoBoost Handling Package’ for the 2.3-Iitre EcoBoost Mustang which includes MagneRide adaptive suspension, semi-metallic brakes and wider 19-inch alloy wheels shod with 265 mm Pirelli P Zero Corza4 tyres and a 24 mm sway bar at the rear for better rigidity.

As far as exterior design updates go the 2.3 EcoBoost Mustang gets a new front splitter, black grille, grey stripes on the bonnet, retro pony badges and a rear lip spoiler. The 2020 Ford Mustang 2.3-litre High Performance Package will make its debut at the New York Auto show.

  • Shelby Mustang GT500 Could Be Launched Soon In India

Shelby Mustang GT500 Could Be Launched Soon In India

Pune-based AJP Group is likely to launch the much-loved Shelby Mustang GT500 in India this year. The multi-brand enterprise, which recently appointed Manas Dewan as its Chief Operating Officer (COO), said that the company has partnered with performance auto brands like Scomadi Scooters and Shelby. And we have reasons to believe that the first car to come from the latter will be the new 2020 Shelby Mustang GT500. It was just early this year in January that Ford performance-oriented pony car made its official debut at the 2019 Detroit Motor Show, and it’s possible that the car could come to India by the end of this year.

At the moment neither Dewan nor any other company spokesperson was available to provide us with an official confirmation about the Shelby GT500’s arrival. However, it’s clear that AJP is likely to serve as the technical partner for Shelby in India, handling modifications and upgrades, and as is the case globally sales, services and warranty bits could be handled by Shelby and Ford India.

Although based on the regular Mustang, this particular GT500 tuned by Shelby is the most powerful Ford car. The Shelby GT500 is powered by a hand-built supercharged 5.2-litre aluminium alloy engine with inverted a 2.65-litre roots-type supercharger and air-to-liquid intercooler tucked neatly in the V8 engine valley and is tuned to churn out around 700 bhp. The Shelby GT500 gets a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, which can shift smoothly in less than 100 milliseconds. This dual-clutch transmission is designed for a number of drive modes, including normal, slippery, sport, drag and track, and features line-lock and rpm-selectable launch control through selectable Track Apps.

Visually, the car carries the signature Shelby character merged with the Ford Mustang’s design, like the large grille with the Cobra at the centre, sporty front bumper with a lip spoiler, 20-inch carbon fibre wheels. The car also comes with 0.5-inch-wider rear wheels (11.5-inch), custom Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, adjustable exposed carbon fibre GT4 track wing and splitter wickers with integrated dive plane. Then we also have the signature twin racing strips running from front to back.

The car also gets a race car-inspired cabin with premium materials and unique finishes with fibre instrument panel applique and new door panel inserts in Dark Slate Miko suede with accent stitching. The dashboard features an 8-inch SYNC 3 touch screen featuring SiriusXM and FordPass Connect, along with a 12-inch full-colour LCD instrument cluster as well. The car also gets a high-performance custom-tuned 12-speaker B&O play premium audio system.

  • High-powered Mustang marks a Thai first for Ford

High-powered Mustang marks a Thai first for Ford

Ford has officially launched the Mustang sports car in Thailand with prices ranging from Bt3.599 million for the 2.3-litre EcoBoost Coupe to Bt4.799 million for the 5.0-litre V8 GT.

The iconic Mustang, imported from the US, is the first high-powered model offered by the American automaker in Thailand. Other models offered in the Thai market include the Fiesta, Focus, Ecosport, Ranger pickup and Everest PPV (Pickup Passenger Vehicle).

The Mustang takes on the form of a fastback and is available in four exterior colour choices along with different wheel options. For the 2018 model, the 5.0-litre V8 engine with Ford’s new dual-fuel, high-pressure direct injection and low-pressure port fuel injection for better low-end torque, has been beefed up to 460hp and 556Nm. Acceleration from 0-100km/h is claimed at 4.3 seconds.

The turbocharged 2.3-litre motor develops 300hp and 440Nm and features overboost function. Both are equipped with a newly developed 10-speed automatic that Ford claims has been tested over a distance of more than 10 million kilometres. Last month the American automaker was ordered by a Thai court to pay compensation worth Bt23 million to 296 customers of the Ford Fiesta, Focus and Ecosport for its defective Powershift dual-clutch transmission.

As for the Mustang, Ford engineers highlighted the various settings available for each drive mode, saying that the new gearbox allows the engine to maintain peak power and torque while upshifting, resulting in faster acceleration and seamless shifts. Both models also get the electronic line lock system that brakes the front wheels so drivers can burn the rear tires in order to achieve optimal temperature for quick standing starts.

The drag strip mode also optimises all systems for each of the many driving modes, while the exhaust volume can also be adjusted (to keep the neighbours happy).

The 2018 model gets suspension improvements for better grip and handling, including thicker anti-roll bars. Inside there’s a 12-inch digital instrument cluster and a pulsating red engine start button, gearshift paddles behind the multi-function steering wheel, along with aluminium finish and soft touch materials on the door panel. There’s also a full driver assistance package and infotainment system compatible to both Android and iOS.

The Mustang is available at only 19 selected Ford dealerships in the country. The cars come with Ford Premium Care package that includes five-year/100,000km warranty, five complimentary service checks in 60 months/75,000km, and 24-hour roadside assistance for five years.

  • Ford bets on Mustang to power up China profits

Ford bets on Mustang to power up China profits

Ford Motor is betting on one of its most distinctively American models, the Mustang muscle car, to boost the company’s sales and profits in China.

Ford began selling the Mustang in China in early 2015, and it is a niche vehicle, selling at a rate of about 3,000 cars a year. Still, that makes the Mustang, which starts at 399,800 yuan ($57,670) the top-seller in a sporty car segment against more expensive vehicles like the Audi TT and the Nissan Skyline GT-R. Mustang last year outsold the Chevrolet Camaro from General Motors Co by nearly 15 to one.

With styling that harks back to 1960s Detroit muscle cars, the Mustang stands out in a Ford lineup dominated by practical sedans and sport utility vehicles. Ford’s sales in China grew by 50 percent in 2013 and 20 percent in 2014, but in 2015 the pace slowed to 3 percent. In 2016, Ford added the Lincoln luxury brand to its China lineup and expanded sales by 14 percent.

Industry analysts said Ford’s China market profits and profitability were relatively healthy, with operating margins for Ford’s joint ventures with Chongqing Changan Automobile Co Ltd (000625.SZ) and Jiangling Motors Corp (JMC) (000550.SZ) in the 14-16 percent range over the past three years.

But competition in the world’s largest car market continues to heat up as global automakers, from GM to Volkswagen AG to Toyota Motor Corp, add more models to product ranges. Indigenous Chinese automakers, too, are launching models that can compete more head-on with global carmakers’ products.

Ford officials said the company’s China operations did not have specific profit objectives but were trying to keep margins in their current “healthy” range.

“In terms of having a pricing power on your brand, you want people to be choosing your brand for rational reasons, but if you could also (combine) that with emotional reasons, that’s when you get some pricing power,” Peter Fleet, Ford’s executive in charge of sales and marketing for the Asia-Pacific region told Reuters.

The Mustang and the F-150 Raptor, a high performance version of Ford’s F-150 large pickup truck, provide the emotion, he said.

The formula works for Dong Zirui, a 27-year-old small rental car business owner in the northeastern China city of Tangshan who bought a Mustang late last year.

“The Mustang is a rear-wheel-drive car,” said Dong who decided to buy the Mustang when he spotted photos of it online. “It’s a savage when you try some drifting stunts with the car.” But Dong said he can fit his wife and young son in the car when he needs to.

Dealers say the Mustang brings in two types of buyers to Ford stores: younger drivers, mostly younger than 30 years of age, from upper-middle class families, who have recently finished their studies and have financial support from their parents, as well as drivers in their 30s and 40s who have work or life experience outside China.

“Ford has a cleaner sheet in China, so there might be an opening for those halo cars to help the company improve its brand image,” said James Chao, Asia-Pacific chief for consulting and research firm IHS Markit Automotive, referring to China being a relatively young market.

As Chinese consumers typically make car purchasing decisions based on word-of-mouth advice from their family and friends, Mustang buyers can be influential opinion leaders for Ford.

Guo Xin, a 30-year-old rally car racer and stunt driver for films and commercials in Beijing, said he liked the Mustang so much that in 2011 he helped form a Mustang Club of China which now has some 2,000 members.

“Growing up I used to see the Mustang in movies,” said Guo who drives a 2006 Mustang and also owns a 1966 Mustang.

Guo’s classic Mustang would turn heads even in Detroit. But he cannot take it out on public roads. Used cars brought in from outside China cannot be registered in the country.
