Natura chooses Malaysia for Asian debut

Global cosmetics firm Natura has launched its business in Malaysia with a pop-up store in Sunway Pyramid, Petaling Jaya.

The pop-up store will serve to introduce the brand and its products to consumers via a series of interactive experiences, including a skincare interactive wall, free skin and hair analysis, a fragrance personality analyzer, and a pampering hand massage during a VR adventure through the Amazon forest.

In Malaysia, Natura products will be available to customers through the brand’s online store, with plans to launch a social selling channel now underway. The brand also engages in relationship selling and will open physical stores.

Around 300 items from the Natura portfolio will be offered under the brands Ekos, Chronos, Lumina, Mamae e Bebe and Natura Homem – as well as fragrances from the Brazilian Perfumery House. All the firm’s products are 100 percent vegan.

“We see great opportunity for Natura in Malaysia, with its millions of diverse consumers which have for decades been purchasing through many different channels,” said Natura International head Daniel Silveira. “We are confident that our omnichannel strategy will be well-received in Malaysia, bringing a wide variety of products to customers as well as providing a great platform for growth for our business across the region. More importantly, we are excited about working with local partners across Asia as a force for change to build a more sustainable future.”

The brand is now looking at building its business across Asia. Last year Natura bought the Australian skincare brand Aesop, which already has an extensive network of stores across Asia.

Natura and Avon announce Major merger

Brazilian parent of Aesop and the Body Shop to take over 130-year-old Avon business.

Cosmetics firm Natura is acquiring Avon Products in an all-share transaction, creating one of the world’s largest “pure-play” beauty groups.

The combination of Natura and Avon will create as a multi-brand and multi-channel beauty group with direct connections to consumers on a daily basis. Going forward, the group will hold a strengthened hand in relationship selling through Avon’s and Natura’s more than 6.3 million consultants and representatives; a global footprint through 3200 stores, as well as an expanded digital presence across all companies.

The combined group is expected to have annual gross revenues of more than US$10 billion, more than 40,000 associates, and a presence in 100 countries.

“We have always looked at Avon with respect and admiration,” said Natura cofounder Luiz Seabra. “Natura was founded on its passion for beauty and relationships, and today’s transaction creates a major force in the direct-to-consumer space. Direct selling was a social network before the word even existed, and the arrival of technology and globalization only multiplied opportunities to connect with consumers in a meaningful way.

“The peer-to-peer sales model is evolving towards social selling and the power of digital allows the group to go beyond providing products and advice, and advances women’s empowerment, through financial independence and enhanced self-esteem. We believe that business can be a force for good and together with Avon, we will amplify our pioneering efforts to bring social, environmental and economic value to an ever-expanding network,” said Seabra.

Avon and Natura both reach customers through a force of independent, primarily female micro-entrepreneurs, who act as brand ambassadors and beauty advisors.

Natura expects the combination to result in target synergies estimated at $150 million to $250 million annually, some of which will be reinvested to further enhance capabilities in digital and social selling, research and development and brand initiatives and to continue to grow the group’s geographic footprint.

“Following the acquisitions of Aesop in 2013 and The Body Shop in 2017, Natura is taking another exciting, decisive step to build a global, multi-brand, multi-channel, purpose-driven group,” said Natura executive chairman Roberto Marques. “Together we will enhance our growing digital capabilities, our social network of consultants and representatives and leverage our global store footprint and distinctive brands, connecting, touching and influencing millions of consumers with different profiles daily, making our group unique and creating a formidable platform for growth.”

“This combination is the start of an exciting new chapter in Avon’s 130-year history,” said Avon CEO Jan Zijderveld. “It stands as a testament to the progress of our efforts to ‘Open Up Avon’, and we believe it will allow us to significantly accelerate our strategy and further expand into the online channel. Over the past year, we have started a transformation to strengthen Avon’s competitiveness by renewing our focus on Her, simplifying our operations, and modernizing and digitizing our brand. Together with Natura, we will have broader access to innovation and a portfolio of products, stronger e-commerce, and digital platform, and improved data and tools for representatives to drive growth and enhance value for shareholders.”

Aesop store pays tribute to Oscar Niemeyer

The new Aesop Duke of York Square store in west London was designed as a tribute to Brazilian modernist Oscar Niemeyer.

While founded in Australia, skincare brand Aesop was recently bought by Brazilian retail group Natura and the new owner has been quick to add a touch of its own influence in store designs. Aesop is renowned for each of its shops being designed differently, eschewing the cookie-cutter approach of most global retail brands.

Twelve rose-tinged clay arches fan out over a huge stainless-steel sink in the Snohetta-designed Aesop Chelsea store, reports architecture and design online publication Dezeen. It is located inside a luxury shopping area beside the Saatchi gallery in Duke of York Square off King’s Road.

Dezeen reports a large column set in the centre of the 108sqm shop dictated the starting point of the design for Snohetta’s Oslo office.

“The team placed 12 arching sections of wall – intentionally reminiscent of the concrete forms used by Oscar Niemeyer – around its edges. The arches splay out across the ceiling and touch the walls, to incorporate the column into the design.”

A large disk-shaped sink with a polished stainless-steel top and fibre-glass base wraps around the centre of the column, cementing it as the centre point of the store.

“There is this column, very odd, very strange, and we decided we would surround this column to accentuate it even more,” senior architect Peter Girgis told Dezeen.

“Central to the space is this large disk sink, about four and a half metres in diameter, and from that we wanted this column of both light and emulating structure to come and loom,” added Girgis, who led the project with architect Gaute Simonsen.

Aesop Duke of York Square is Snohetta’s first permanent project in the UK, but its seventh store for the skincare brand. It designed a store for Aesop in Singapore, likened to “an upside-down forest”.
