Vietnam Airlines takes delivery of first A320neo

Vietnam Airlines recently received its first Airbus A320neo as part of its fleet rejuvenation efforts.

This is the first among the three A320neo planes, each seating 182 passengers, to be delivered to the carrier this year.

By adding the A320neo family, the airline affirms the resolve to leverage its operation capacity to meet passengers’ increasing demand, particularly during the peak summer travel season.

The new aircraft will help Vietnam Airlines provide an additional nearly 40,000 seats during the summer peak, and some 300,000 in the second half of the year.

They will be used on such domestic routes as Hanoi – Da Lat, Hanoi – Phu Quoc, Ho Chi Minh City – Thanh Hoa and Ho Chi Minh City – Chu Lai.

The modern narrow-body aircraft is equipped with a new-generation engine that helps save 16% of fuel consumption, reduce noise by 75% and cut some 50% of toxic exhaust compared to previous models.

Vietnam Airlines stressed that it has made unceasing efforts to improve its services and fleet, hoping to bring passengers safety and comfort.

The carrier will add large-body Boeing 787-10, the biggest passenger aircraft used in Vietnam at present, to its fleet in the coming time.

  • Airbus resells six unwanted jets built for AirAsia

Airbus resells six unwanted jets built for AirAsia

Airbus has found buyers for six aircraft from the A320neo family rejected by one of its main customers, Malaysia’s AirAsia, as it works off a surplus left by the coronavirus crisis, industry sources said.

Unwanted jets have become an emblem of pandemic-induced problems in the aerospace industry that have come on top of a chill in ties between two of its major players.

Tensions became unusually public when Airbus in April invited tenders for six jets that AirAsia had failed to take delivery of.

It has now found homes for all six, the last of which is being delivered this month, a European industry source told Reuters. Airbus provided no comment.

Airbus has been steadily increasing deliveries as it strikes deals with airlines to reschedule deliveries or store jets.

It said last month it had reduced an overhang that it had been unable to deliver during the crisis by 10 units to 135 jets. The redeployment of AirAsia orders is expected to trim the surplus further as deliveries top output in November.

Airbus is seeing strong demand, relative to the rest of the battered sector, for its A321neo jet, and the aircraft has broadly held its value, the European source said. It is sticking with plans to increase output of the single-aisle jets.

The A321neo competes with the two largest versions of the Boeing 737 MAX, which won approval last week to re-enter service after a 20-month grounding in the wake of two crashes.

Boeing is expected to re-sell dozens of 737 MAX whose buyers cancelled during the grounding, potentially depressing prices.

According to the UK-based consultancy IBA Group, all aircraft have lost some value during the COVID-19 crisis but the A321neo is trading around 5% below its inherent value while the MAX is 10% below – hurt also by the recent grounding.

Doubts remain, however, about demand for a larger Airbus, the A330neo, whose largest customer, AirAsia’s long-haul unit Air Asia X, is seeking new funding to survive.

AirAsia said in April it would stop taking deliveries of all Airbus jets this year and review remaining orders.

The move exacerbated concerns about demand in Southeast Asia, which was already struggling with overcapacity before the crisis.

AirAsia’s relations with Airbus were further clouded when it was drawn into an Airbus bribery case before being cleared by local investigators, industry sources have said.

AirAsia co-founders denied any wrongdoing in a sports sponsorship deal cited in a wider Airbus bribery settlement with prosecutors in January. The European source said AirAsia remained an important partner for Airbus.

  • AirAsia India plans expansion; to induct 3 more A320 neos by June 2021

AirAsia India plans expansion; to induct 3 more A320 neos by June 2021

Budget carrier AirAsia India plans to add three more Airbus A320 neo planes by June next year as part of its fleet and network expansion. The airline — a joint venture between Tatas and Malaysia’s AirAsia Investment currently has 32 aircraft, including two A320 neos inducted recently.

In a statement to PTI, an AirAsia India spokesperson said the airline had signed an agreement for inducting five A320 neo planes last year.

The Bengaluru-based airline took delivery of the first A320 neo in October and another one earlier this month.

“We will be inducting our third Airbus A320 neo in December and we look forward to inducting our fourth and fifth A320 neo by June 2021,” the spokesperson said in the statement.

The statement was issued in response to the queries sent to the airline’s managing director and chief executive officer Sunil Bhaskaran.

On November 17, Malaysia’s AirAsia Berhad had said it was reviewing its investment in AirAsia India. Against this backdrop, there have also been concerns about the domestic airline.

Indicating that AirAsia India is on an expansion path, the airline’s spokesperson said it is planning to scale up the capacity to 70 per cent from 55 per cent at present.

“We are soon planning to amp up our capacity to 70 per cent,” the statement said.

Domestic commercial flights were suspended for two months from March 25 to curb the spread of coronavirus infections.

The Civil Aviation Ministry permitted increasing the capacity to 45 per cent with effect from June 27 from a maximum of one-third at the time of resumption of domestic flights from May 25. It was scaled up to 60 per cent from September 2.

Airlines were allowed to operate at 70 per cent of the pre-COVID-19 capacity from November 11.

Earlier this month, senior AirAsia India officials informed travel agents that it remains on the path of serving Indian market by growing its network and scale of operations.

AirAsia Receives Its First Airbus A321neo by

At a delivery ceremony in Hamburg, Germany, budget airline Air Asia took delivery of its very first Airbus A321neo. The event took place on Wednesday under grey skies and wet conditions. The narrowbody long-haul jet will begin operating this week from AirAsia’s hub in Kuala Lumpur to cities across Asia. Destinations already identified include Kuching and Kota Kinabalu

The Star also reports that it had its ferry flight back home after the ceremony, with over 30 media personnel from the Southeast Asian region as well as AirAsia staff. According to sources included FlightRadar24 and Planespotters, the airplane has been assigned the registration 9M-VAA and includes a unique and ‘funky’ livery.

“We could not be more thrilled that it will be the new backbone of our operations across the AirAsia Group. With the 25% increase capacity and 10% reduction in cost per seat, the A321neo will enable us to maintain low fares so ‘Everyone Can Fly!’…This new generation aircraft delivers significant capacity and cost benefits which we can pass on to our guests in the form of great value fares and it also unlocks exciting network expansion opportunities allowing us to fly the aircraft for an additional one and a half hours longer.” -AirAsia Indonesia chief executive officer Veranita Yosephine

A recent Twitter post about the delivery (shown below) mentions that this is the first aircraft out of the 353 ordered from Airbus. In fact, the delivery of this particular model is part of AirAsia’s plan to move from its existing fleet of A320neo aircraft to the larger A321neo.

AirAsia revealed the order for the A321neo at the Paris Air Show this year. The airline announced the conversion of 253 A320neos to the larger A321neos. This will make AirAsia the largest customer in the world for this type.

The larger A321neo offers 50 seats more over the current A320neos. Furthermore, it also provides 40% more cargo space as well as “expanded seating capacity with optimized use of cabin space”.

The upscaling of the order back in June was welcomed news for Airbus. Although the quantity of aircraft ordered stayed the same, all of them being converted from existing A320 orders marks the biggest order for the larger variant of the narrowbody to date. It also signifies a massive vote of confidence for the type.

The A321neo is the longest variant of the popular A320 family of aircraft. In fact, with the new improvements of the neo (new engine option), there is an expected 20% increase in fuel efficiency from the A321ceo (conventional engine option). Efficiency features include new generation engines and fuel-saving Sharklets.

  • AirAsia’s Latest A321neo Receives A Funky Paint Job

AirAsia’s Latest A321neo Receives A Funky Paint Job

Low-cost carrier AirAsia has given the world a sneak peek of an eye-catching livery for its new A321neo. The Malaysian airline is due to receive its first of the largest A320 family aircraft in the coming weeks.

AirAsia revealed the order for the A321neo at the Paris Air Show this year. The airline announced a conversion of 253 A320neos to the larger A321neos, to make AirAsia the largest customer in the world for this type.

In a post to the airline’s official Twitter feed, AirAsia gave us a sneak peek at their color scheme for the forthcoming A321neo. While most of us would have assumed it would take on the iconic red livery of AirAsia’s fleet, it seems they’re going for something a bit different with this aircraft. Deliveries like this, while not unheard of, are a rarity in the world of aviation. Indeed, there are some good reasons why aircraft, as a rule, are mostly painted white. However, AirAsia is not afraid to stand out from the crowd.

In fact, many low-cost carriers are known for more colorful liveries. Easyjet aircraft are easy to spot in their bright orange coats, and WOW air’s purple planes will be missed on aprons around the world. For an LCC, branding is crucial, and AirAsia will certainly be recognizable with this plane.

You can see the livery taking shape in the video below, shared by AirAsia on Twitter.

    Why the A321neo?

The upscaling of the order back in June at the Paris Air Show was a major boon for Airbus. While none of them were fresh orders, all being converted from existing A320 orders, it was the biggest order for the larger variant of the narrowbody to date, and a massive vote of confidence for the type.

The A321neo is the longest variant of the popular A320 family of aircraft. With the neo improvements onboard, which include new generation engines and fuel saving Sharklets, it’s 20% more efficient than its predecessor.

Clearly, a bigger aircraft that is cheaper to fly will make it possible for AirAsia to sell seats at the lowest possible price. The airline confirmed this in the post, when it said that,

“The A321neo will be the new backbone of our operations as we continue to make flying affordable for everyone.”

With 253 on order, AirAsia is clearly banking on the A321neo being a massive success. We can’t wait to see this colorful plane arriving at airports all over the world!

  • Bamboo Airways inks deal for 26 Airbus aircraft

Bamboo Airways inks deal for 26 Airbus aircraft

Private airline Bamboo Airways will buy 26 new narrow-body Airbus aircraft as it expands operations. The value of the deal is $6.3 billion, based on list price, chairman Trinh Van Quyet told. With the previous order of 24 aircraft of the same model last year, the airline has ordered 50 in total.

Quyet said that the first of the A321Neo planes will be delivered in 2022.

Bamboo Airways had previously said that it was considering purchasing 25 narrow-body Boeing 737 MAX, which has been grounded internationally after two deadly crashes within a space of five months.

Last month, Bamboo Airways had inked a deal with Boeing for 10 wide-body 787-9 Dreamliners worth almost $3 billion.

Starting this year, the airline operates 17 domestic flight routes. It plans to start international flights next month, with Japan, Singapore and South Korea mentioned as possible destinations.

It also plans to fly to Europe in June and directly to the U.S. by the end of this year or early next year.

Bamboo Airways is one of five airlines operating in Vietnam. The others are state-owned Vietnam Airlines, budget airline Vietjet, low-cost carrier Jetstar Pacific and Vietnam Air Services Company (VASCO).

Local airlines served almost 50 million passengers last year, up 10 percent from 2017.

  • AirAsia orders another 14 A320ceo aircraft for regional network

AirAsia orders another 14 A320ceo aircraft for regional network

AirAsia has signed an agreement with Airbus to order an additional 14 A320ceo aircraft to meet higher than expected near-term growth on the carrier’s regional network.

The contract, which is subject to AirAsia board approval, was announced at the “Paris Air Show” on Tuesday.

The announcement will see the total number of A320 Family aircraft ordered by the Malaysia-based airline rise to 592, reaffirming its position as the largest airline customer for the Airbus single-aisle product line.

To date, 171 A320ceo and eight A320neo aircraft have been delivered to the airline and are flying with its units in Malaysia, India, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines.

Tony Fernandes, AirAsia Group chief executive officer, said: “Demand is very strong in AirAsia’s traditional countries, but now we have Indonesia, the Philippines and India doing extremely well. The robust demand has led us to expand our fleet, and Airbus has been a great partner in finding us slots.

“We still need to find more aircraft to expand our regional reach and are actively sourcing from the leasing market. The competitive environment is at its best, coupled with a stable oil price. With the lowest cost in the world, AirAsia is back on aggressive growth.”

The A320 Family is the world’s best-selling single-aisle product line. It has won over 13,000 orders and more than 7,600 aircraft have been delivered to some 400 customers and operators worldwide.

With one aircraft in four sizes (A318, A319, A320 and A321), the A320 Family seats from 100 to 240 passengers, and features the widest cabin in the single-aisle market with 18”-wide seats in Economy as standard.

  • Citilink’s first new Airbus A320neo arrives in Indonesia

Citilink’s first new Airbus A320neo arrives in Indonesia

Garuda Indonesia’s low-cost subsidiary, Citilink, has begun welcoming a new fleet of Airbus A320 new engine option (neo) aircraft from the Airbus factory in Toulouse, France.

Citilink has ordered 35 aircraft from the European manufacturer since it developed the new version in 2012. The 180-passenger capacity A320neo will join 45 aircraft of the previous model, the A320 current engine option (ceo), which Citilink already owns.

The delivery will be completed by 2021. This year, Citilink will receive five aircraft.

“We will use them for medium-length routes like to Eastern Indonesia, to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and to Shanghai,” Citilink acting president director and finance director Mega Satria said during the welcome ceremony at the Garuda Maintenance Facility (GMF) AeroAsia Workshop in Cengkareng, Banten, on Friday.

According to Airbus data, the A320neo features two engine options, Pratt & Whitney’s PurePower PW1100G-JM and CFM International’s LEAP-1A. Citilink’s aircraft use the latter. Along with improvements to airframe and winglets, fuel efficiency has been increased by 15 percent compared to the A320ceo.

As of January, Airbus had received 5,069 orders of the new aircraft since it began production in January 2016. German airline Lufthansa was the first to receive one on Jan. 20 last year.

  • AirAsia signs component support deal for A320neo jets

AirAsia signs component support deal for A320neo jets

AirAsia and Air France Industries KLM Engineering & Maintenance (AFI KLM E&M) has inked a component support agreement for the airline’s fleet of Airbus A320neo passenger jets, which is ultimately scheduled to number 304 aircraft.

AirAsia took delivery of its first A320neo on Sept 7 this year in Hamburg.

The contract between the two groups includes component repair services and solutions designed to maximise aircraft availability.

“We are delighted to find a strong partner in AFI KLM E&M and one that is as dynamic as us. Operating a new-generation aircraft at such a large scale requires adaptive, world-class support, and we have the utmost confidence that AFI KLM E&M will be able to provide us with the responsiveness, reliability and performance needed,” said AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes in a statement yesterday.

AFI KLM E&M came up with an ultra-competitive support offer which is specially tailored for the carrier.

With its experience of large-scale support, AFI KLM E&M is able to offer maintenance solutions for large fleets like that operated by AirAsia.

“We are very honoured that AirAsia is extending its trust to us by awarding AFI KLM E&M with the support of its brand new A320neo fleet,” said Air France CEO Franck Terner.

AFI KLM E&M currently provides component support for AirAsia’s A330 fleet operated by AirAsia X, its budget long-haul subsidiary.

That support agreement was signed in 2009 and was extended in 2013.

  • Adidas Group India plans shopping app

Adidas Group India plans shopping app

Sportshoe brand Adidas Group India is planning to launch a shopping app by December, primarily to drive customer engagement through content and loyalty programs, as well as boost online sales.

It is a significant move as it indicates increasing fragmentation in online fashion shopping, as most brands do not have independent shopping apps, reports Live Mint.

With its app, Adidas is aiming to strengthen its online presence as brands and offline retailers adopt omnichannel strategies to offer customers access to products across physical stores via their mobile phones and websites.

“Our engagement with consumers does not end in incremental sales,” says Adidas Group India’s senior eCommerce director Abhishek Lal. “Shopping is just a small fraction. We are planning an app and rewards program to increase engagement with the brand.”

Separate apps will be rolled out for Adidas and its subsidiary Reebok India.

Adidas is currently available on online stores such as Amazon India, Flipkart and Myntra, and online channels contribute 10 to 15 per cent of the company’s overall sales, says Lal.

Other brands are already building online stores to reduce their dependence on the likes of Amazon India and Myntra. Leading the way is Madura Garments with two online stores, Abof and Trendin. Its brands include Allen Solly, Louis Philippe and Peter England.

By launching an app, Adidas is also trying to tap into social commerce by offering content and creating communities of fashion followers.

“Social commerce is complementary to pure play eCommerce, and also the way forward for us,” says Lal. “There is no history of a single-brand app yet, so it is hard to assess what the outcome will be.”

Adidas has also expanded its omnichannel presence since its launch early last year. Adidas plans to bring about 400 stores under the omni-channel loop by December. Those already involved in the strategy have had their revenue grow about 3 to 5 per cent.

“There has been some impact on revenue because of omni-channel,” says Lal. “A lot of sales were lost because sizes were not available in stores. There was also a lot of cross-selling. We have a brand called Neo which is available only online, so a lot of people walked into the stores and bought Neo on the tab. That is an upsell opportunity.”
