Net1 Indonesia Quick Response on the Lombok Earthquake

Net1 Indonesia is quick responding towards the earthquake in Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) by providing Free WiFi access for refugees in evacuation area. To implement the social action, Net1 Indonesia collaborates with Communications and Informatics Office (Kominfo) of Province West Nusa Tenggara. Net1 has donated 100 WiFi devices to the office to be distributed and installed in several evacuation areas.

This caring action is part of Net1 Indonesia’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to relieve the burden of victims affected by the Lombok earthquake, which killed 113 people, injured 236 people and thousands others homeless caused of severe damage. Until Tuesday (8/8), aftershocks still occurred after the earthquake with a magnitude of 7 hit Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara, on Sunday (5/8).

“We received information from our area team in West Nusa Tenggara that telecommunication access was down, while many people were still looking for their family members. Telecommunications access will facilitate people and their families to communicate and update each other on their conditions,” said Larry Ridwan, CEO of Net1 Indonesia.

With the support of telecommunication access and internet from Net1, shelters around the disaster area can be an information hub to update informations related to the disaster, including the possibility to find people who separated from their family. The WiFi devices installation in the shelters is possible to be extended based on situation and condition in the natural disaster area.

“We will distribute the one hundred devices to 48 sub-districts in Mataram City, and in the districts including North Lombok, Central Lombok, West Lombok and East Lombok. So far, the worst damage occurs in North Lombok with 78 death toll. We are excited since Net1 is very quick responding to fulfill the need of telecommunication and internet access. Telecommunication access in Lombok and its surrounding was down when people urgently need to contact and update their conditions to family and relatives,” revealed Tri Budiprayitno, Head of Kominfo Office in West Nusa Tenggara Province.

“We hope this disaster will pass soon, so people can recover and resume to their activities,” Larry added.

Because of the magnitude of the earthquake, a number of telecommunication infrastructure in Lombok damaged, but the damage did not affect the network and range of Net1 Indonesia 4G LTE. Net1 Indonesia’s networks and signals are normally operating at 450MHz frequency to provide adequate telecommunications access for its customers and victims.

Net1 Indonesia also encourages Sentra Net1 which spreaded across Bali and Lombok Island to play an active role in providing technical repair if there are customers’ devices damaged because of earthquake. Please visit net1.co.id for more information.

  • Net1 Indonesia Available in 10 Exotic Destinations

Net1 Indonesia Available in 10 Exotic Destinations

Net1 Indonesia, a 4G LTE mobile data broadband provider, has announced its availability in 10 exotic tourism destinations in Indonesia. This aims to provide sufficient internet access for those who are traveling back to hometown and spending long holiday. By providing 4G LTE service in tourism destinations, especially those in remote area, Net1 Indonesia hopes to help people to share their holiday story and photos through social media.

The ten destinations covered by Net1 Indonesia are Samosir Island in North Sumatera, Takengon Fresh Sea Lake in Aceh, Tiu Kelep Waterfall in Lombok – West Nusa Tenggara, Tanjung Kelayang Beach in Belitung, Situ Cileunca in Pangalengan – West Java, Tanjung Bira in Bulukumba – South Sulawesi, Bukittinggi in West Sumatra, Gili Trawangan in Lombok, Karimun Jawa Island in Central Java, and Mandalika in West Nusa Tenggara. Some of these destinations have been included in “10 new Bali,” a program released by the government through the Ministry of Tourism.

“The existence of Net1 Indonesia in those 10 tourism spots with adequate 4G LTE based internet access is to facilitate the travelers and tourists to stay in touch with family and friends, yet still exist in social media. The connection provision in those spots is also reflecting our commitment to support the government programs to boosting the tourism industry through the brand of Wonderful Indonesia,” said Larry Ridwan, Chief Executive Officer of Net1 Indonesia.

Further, Larry highlights that the availability of internet connection will leverage the tourism spots in order to be noticed and widely known by international publics. Thus, with adequate internet connection, visitors can help to expose and popularize those new destinations.

“Travelers, especially millennials, cannot be separated from their smartphone and 4G data connections, they will stay exist during their trip to hometown and the whole long holiday. They usually share photos of food or unique tourist spots through social media. In line with this trend, Net1 Indonesia is triggered to expand its coverage in tourism destinations especially in rural areas,” Larry added.

Net1 Indonesia’s effort to expand the coverage area in tourism destinations is also reflected by conducting digital activity #MauAda4Gdimana from 7 May to 7 July 2018. This digital activity is pursuing the society to be actively involved in voting a certain locations to get covered by Net1 4G LTE services. Participants who are interested in joining this activity can open microsite, then choose the location in the provided column then simply click VOTE.

The development of destinations in Indonesia has driven investment growth in the tourism sector. According to data from the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) of the Republic of Indonesia, the investment in this sector in 2017 has increased by 31 percent, or valued at US$1.7 billion and is targeted to reach US$2 billion by end of this year. Indonesia’s tourism sector is projected to contribute 15 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), valued at IDR280 trillion for foreign exchange with 20 million of foreign tourist arrivals, 275 million of domestic tourists travel and able to absorb 13 million work force by 2019.

Tourism is mentioned to be one of sectors with potential investment growth this year beside e-commerce. Indonesia’s tourism is considered to be the most sustainable commodity yet reaching to the lowest level of society. This sectors is rapidly growing compared to other leading commodities, among others are oil & gas, coal, and palm oil. Furthermore, the tourism sector will grow more economic centers throughout the country.

Based on data from The World Economic Forum, Indonesia’s tourism competitiveness is continuously making positive leap from the ranks 70th in 2013 to 50th in 2015. In 2017, Indonesia’s tourism competitiveness index has climbed 8 places to 42th and is targeted to reach the 30th position by 2018.

    Collaborate with Local Governments

Blessed with natural resources and regional cultures is a motivation for Indonesia to grow the tourism sector by increasing tourists visits, both from domestic and foreign. The local governments, starting from province to the lower level, districts and cities, are having the same spirit to develop tourism destinations in their regions. They aim to reach the target of 17 million foreign tourists visit this year and will increase to 20 million tourists by 2019.

The commitment of Net1 Indonesia to support the tourism program, especially in the provision of 4G LTE broadband data access is reflected by the cooperation with a number of local governments ranging from City, District, to Province in Indonesia. So far, Musi Banyuasin Regency (MuBa), West Halmahera Regency, Talaud Islands Regency, Tual City, Siau Tagulandang Islands District Biaro (Sitaro), Sangihe Islands Regency, Bintuni Bay District and Kaimana Regency have signed Memorandum of Understanding with Net1 Indonesia to build 4G LTE-based communications infrastructure, including in tourism destinations.

The characteristics of 450 MHz low frequency, which able to reach wide coverage than the higher bands, is providing benefits for Net1 Indonesia and the local government when they have to build telecommunication infrastructure such as Base Transceiver Station (BTS) as Net1 Indonesia only need one BTS to cover radius 100 kilometers area. Another advantage of the 4G LTE 450 MHz technology is its ability to support the launch of machine-to-machine (M2M) communication services in rural settings, such as video surveillance, telemetry, and tracking.

  • Net1 Ready to Support Broadband Internetin Rural Area of Indonesia

Net1 Ready to Support Broadband Internetin Rural Area of Indonesia

Net1 Indonesia is ready to support the government in accelerating the provision of internet connections in rural areas, especially in frontier, outermost and least (3T) developed regions of the country. Net1 Indonesia’s mission to spread the internet access in the rural area is in line with the government nine agenda priorities or often referred to Nawa Cita, which mentions developing Indonesia’s rural area within the framework of Republic of Indonesia.

One of the pillars of those points is realizing the availability of telecommunication infrastructure and network connectivity in the regions. Currently, the Government, through the Ministry of Communications and Informatics, is spurring the availability of internet network for rural areas. According to data from the ministry, currently 73% of villages/sub-lower districts already have internet connection based on 3G technology.

Meanwhile, the LTE 4G network only 55%. By 2019, the government is targeting to provide 3G-based internet for more than 83,000 villages. Another target for the upcoming year is covering total of 514 districts/cities by 4G LTE network. So far, only 64% of them have access to 4G LTE.

“The advantage of Net1 4G LTE network is running at 450 Mhz frequency, which is perfect for rural area geographic character, with large area but low density. The characteristic of low-frequency is not pursuing the access speed, but covering the larger area,” said Larry Ridwan, CEO of Net1 Indonesia, in a discussion forum on Universal Service Obligation (USO), held by Indonesia LTE Community (ILC), at Balai Kartini Exhibition and Convention Center, Jakarta (24/05).

Net1 Indonesia can serve the markets or areas that geographically are difficult to reach and economically are very costly by other operators. Most of 450 Mhz 4G LTE operators in other countries also operate in special areas, such as suburban and rural areas or targeting a very segmented market, such as corporations (mining, plantation, fishery), Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and others.

Larry added that the biggest challenge in deploying internet networks in rural areas is the varying of geographical conditions, ranging from mountains to coastal areas, with scattered populations. This kind of conditions is requiring a large investment for operators. Meanwhile, observed from the business side, developing telecommunication infrastructure in rural area with less population is less profitable.

However, this condition will not break Net1 Indonesia’s spirit to continuously supporting the government’s program in rolling out the Internet network for rural areas. “Net1 4G LTE Network at 450MHz is able to reach 50-60 Km, even up to 100 Km, from a base transceiver station (BTS), so it is suitable for archipelago country like Indonesia which has 16,056 islands. In terms of infrastructure investment in developing the site, it is certainly more efficient,” revealed Larry.

Therefore, Net1 Indonesia can reduce the investment of building 4G LTE network for rural areas more efficiently and effectively. Investment can be pushed much lower. So far, Net1 has deployed 4G LTE service in 19 Provinces spread across Indonesia. A total of 306 districts/cities have accessed Net1 4G LTE network, consisting of 25,279 villages. Overall, 126,299,415 populations have been reached by Net1 Indonesia.

Net1 Indonesia has also cooperated with a number of local governments in district and province level throughout Indonesia. The local governments cooperate with Net1 Indonesia to provide data broadband access for societies in sub urban and remote areas in their domain. Among others, Musi Banyuasin Regency, West Halmahera Regency, Talaud Islands Regency, Tual City, Siau Tagulandang Biaro (Sitaro) Islands Regency, Sangihe Islands Regency, Teluk Bintuni Regency and Kaimana Regency, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to working together building 4G based communications infrastructure with Net1 Indonesia.

The cooperation with a number of local governments that have been started since 2017 is a first step for Net1 Indonesia to be able to meet the needs of data access for up to 260 million Indonesian populations who lives in more than 14.000 islands.
