    First KFC Tibet store to open in 2016

    It’s been more than 10 years since US fast food giant Yum! Brands first mooted opening a store in Tibet.

    But next year the plan is set to come to fruition following the appointment of a franchisee there.

    KFC dropped plans to open an outlet there in 2004 on economic grounds – but the plan was opposed at the time by Tibet’s exiled leader the Dalai Lama, who is a staunch vegetarian.

    Now, the first KFC Tibet outlet is scheduled to open in the first half of next year – part of a massive expansion program for the deep fried chicken brand.

    Yum! is preparing to spin off its China operations and almost treble the current 6900-strong store network to about 20,000 through a franchising program.

    The first KFC Tibet store will open in the capital city, Lhasa.

    Carrefour has opened its biggest store in Asia

Royal Enfield showed off its entire range at the Thailand International Motor Expo in Bangkok including the Bullet 500, Classic 500, Classic Chrome and the Continental GT.     General Auto Supply Co. Ltd (GA) will be their dealer in Thailand and it will start retail operations in Thonglor, Bangkok shortly. GA will also work on expanding the aftermarket abilities of the brand in the Thai market.

    Royal Enfield has been exporting motorcycles for a long time but the push to expand both volumes and markets is a recent move. The company exported roughly 2 per cent of its production last year but that is set to change as the company goes towards its goal of becoming the world’s largest mid-size motorcycle maker.

    First Lulu Group Malaysia hypermarket opening date set

    The first Lulu Group Malaysia hypermarket is scheduled to open in February 2016, the Middle Eastern retailer has confirmed.

    Lulu currently operates 118 hypermarkets and shopping malls in the Middle East and India and positions itself offering quality products, competitive prices and high level customer service. It is ranked by Deloitte as one of the top 10 fastest growing retailers in the world.

    The company confirmed this week during a luncheon hosted by Malaysia’s prime minister that he first hypermarket will open in February 2016 at Jalan Munshi Abdullah in Kuala Lumpur.

    Yusuff Ali Ma, chairman and MD of Lulu Group said the company will initially invest RM1.3 billion (US$300 million) in rolling out 10 hypermarkets during the next two years and gradually expand to all parts of Malaysia.

    “Today the whole world knows about Malaysia’s economic stability, investor friendly approach, liberalised policies and world-class infrastructure and we are confident about our success here,” he said.

    “Our hypermarkets encompass both supermarket and department store formats and we intend to bring a whole new world of shopping to the residents of Malaysia.”

    Yusuffali said Malaysian staff would be trained in the Middle East so as to replicate the levels of service and expertise the brand is renowned for.

    Lease agreements have been inked with retail developers including Greenhill Resources SdnBhd (Setia City Mall), KLIA Properties (for a new project in Bangi) and PNB Commerce (Perling Mall in Johar Baru). Other hypermarkets will open in Kalandhan Kotabaru, Shaa Aalam, Ipoh, Malaka, Penang and Kuala Tringanu.

    “Works of other hypermarkets have already started with some having completed 60 per cent and some others 70 per cent” he said.

    Korea’s Coffine Gurunaru plans China foray

    Korean coffee franchise Coffine Gurunaru is to open one of its largest stores in Hainan, China in the first stage of a planned China rollout.

    The new store is in the middle of Lan Kwal Fong St, the main street of Hainan, and is described as “exceptionally large in size” for a coffee franchise.

    Hainan, sometimes referred to as the ‘Hawaii of the East’, is a major holiday destination for Mainland Chinese.

    Management of Coffine Gurunaru say the extraordinary size of the cafe is relative to the size of the development where it will be located. The world’s largest resort group, Mission Hills, owns resorts, golf courses and shopping malls. It is building the world’s largest K-town in Hainan, where Coffine Gurunaru will open its Chinese flagship.

    The interior will be designed to be “modern and natural”, says a spokesman for the coffee house.

    Coffine Gurunaru is a compound name combining coffee and wine. It was the first coffee house in Korea to offer both coffee and wine. Founded in 2007, it has about 120 stores in South Korea, including franchised stores.

    The cafes’ interiors, including the chairs and walls, are decorated in a cheerful purple, intended to refer to the color of wine.

    Besides beverages, the stores serve a range of salads, panini sandwiches, signature cupcakes and honey bread.

    Coffine Gurunaru has not disclosed how many stores it will open in China, but has confirmed it will build a network.

    Jacob Delafon, a leading French fashion bathroom brand, has launched its brand in China and opened its first store there.

    The new Jacob Delafon China showroom opened on Tuesday, November 17 in Shanghai.

    Bruno Chenesseau, kitchen & bath design director of Jacob Delafon Europe, Middle East and Africa, said given the company is based in Paris, “we were naturally inspired by the city”.

    “By its architecture, its atmosphere, its unique diversity and above all, by the elegant and audacious Parisian style. It is a truly creative playground,” he said.

    Paul & Shark will launch its first store in South Korea with a new point of sale opening at Incheon International airport with Lotte Duty Free, and will also open its first personalised boutique onboard cruiseship Costa Fortuna.

    “Our new opening in Incheon will enable us to enjoy truly spectacular visibility for the brand. Along with the Lotte store we have another two openings planned in Seoul by the first quarter of 2016, giving Paul & Shark a very strong foot-print in the South Korean travel-retail market.     This continues a trend that has seen a 55% increase in openings for Paul & Shark over the past 18 months, of which Bonelli said around half were located in airports and the rest with cruiselines and downtown duty-free stores.

    After coming back from a busy TFWA World Exhibition last month, Bonelli sees a rosy future next year. She added that openings in 2016 were earmarked at Pudong terminal one in partnership with King Power Orient; Hong Kong International airport with Lagardère Travel Retail, and Houston with ATU-Heinemann.

    Speaking of last month’s TFWA, she added: “Cannes, with our new stand, was an incredibly busy and successful week for us with head to head appointments all week,” said Bonelli. “Our personalised embroidery service was again a particular talking point and has become a real stand-out highlight for us.

    “It’s been an incredibly busy and hardworking year for the Travel Retail team but the effort is certainly paying off and we are being rewarded with superb locations for the brand. We are confident that 2016 will be another exceptional year for us, as retailers continue to understand and realise the business potential of partnering with Paul & Shark.

    Apple’s Fifth Retail Store in Beijing Opens November 28

    Apple has announced that its fifth retail store in Beijing, and 27th in China, opens Saturday, November 28 at 10 AM local time. The store will be located in the new Chaoyang Joy City shopping mall at 101 Chaoyang North Road in Beijing’s city proper Chaoyang District.

    The new store will be open 10 AM-10 PM local time everyday and offer traditional Apple Store services, including the Genius Bar, Workshops, JointVenture, events and seminars. Apple’s four other retail stores in Beijing are located at China Central Mall, Sanlitun, Wangfujing and Xidan Joy City.

    Apple has opened more than seven new retail stores in China this year, including locations in Chongqing, Dalian, Hangzhou, Hong Kong, Nanjing and Tianjin. The company is committed to expanding its footprint in China, an increasingly important market, under the leadership of retail chief Angela Ahrendts.

    Indian restaurant operator Mayo Hospitality HK Limited has opened its first outlet in Hong Kong – Bindaas restaurant.

    The Indian tapas bar and restaurant, its full name Bindaas – Bar + Kitchen – marks a plan to use Hong Kong to leverage the city’s favourable location to expand its business in the broader Asia region.

    Located at the corner of Hollywood Road and Aberdeen St in the Soho area, Bindaas – Bar + Kitchen offers a modern style of traditional Indian food alongside craft cocktails and fine wines.

    Mayo plans to open more restaurants in the city before expanding into the Mainland market, according to Bindaas MD Sanat Patel, who has won prestigious Times Food Awards twice for his restaurants in India.

    Apple, continuing its aggressive retail expansion in China, has announced that it will be opening its 22nd retail store in the country in Chengdu, a major city in Sichuan Province, on Saturday, November 21 at 10:00 AM local time. The new store is slated to open less than a month after the grand opening of the 21st Apple Store in China in the major port city of Dalian on October 24.The new Chengdu store will be located in the upscale Taikoo Li shopping plaza at 8 Middle Shamao Street in the Jinjiang District, where several high-end retailers such as Gucci, Omega and Zara are located. The store will be open 10 AM-10 PM local time everyday and offer traditional Apple Store services, including the Genius Bar, Workshops, JointVenture, events and seminars.

    Apple has also posted new job listings for its first retail store in Singapore, which is rumored to open in late 2016 at the Knightsbridge four-story luxury shopping center. The company is looking for Specialists, Geniuses, Creatives, Business Specialists and other traditional Apple Store positions.

    Cosmoparis was founded in 2008 by Axelle Mathery and Hong Kong fashion blogButterboomdescribes the brand as making “stylish footwear designs that are always contemporary, glamorous and feminine for sophisticated ladies”.

    The boutique, located on the first floor of Pacific Place, is a “bright cheerful place with gold table finishing with velvet-like beige coloured stools,” says Butterboom.

    “There are quite a few quirky designs including chic heels with fur, winter boots in different lengths and our favourite – the Angrycat heels that we would like to add to our shoe collection this winter.”

    Paris Baguette opens in Las Vegas

    SPC Group has opened a Paris Baguette store in Las Vegas, a first in the Korean confectionery and bakery industry.

    The Las Vegas store is the company’s 44th store in the US, and located in the Grand Canal Shoppes, a large shopping mall located between two of the major hotels in Las Vegas, the Venetian and the Palazzo.

    The Paris Baguette store occupies two stories within the tourist hot spot, famous for its recreation of Venice, Italy.

    The biggest difference with the Las Vegas store is that it will be selling items such as sandwiches, muffins, and croissants that are popular in the area, and considering that the location is a tourist spot, the store will also sell items suitable as souvenirs.

    Gift sets, tumblers and mugs that have images or quotes representing Las Vegas will be available exclusively at the Las Vegas store.

    Paris Baguette first set foot in America in 2005. Since then, the company has opened 43 stores in New York, Boston, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

    Parkson to launch fashion brand LOL

    Malaysian department store retailer Parkson Retail Asia is to launch a new fashion brand LOL, in partnership with a newly established company Super Apparel Supply, jointly owned by Chong Yan Kit and Lim Kin Ann.

    Together the two companies will establish a chain of retail stores branded LOL and selling fashion apparel and accessories, with Parkson owning 70 per cent of the business. Their venture will be established under an existing non-trading Parkson entity.

    Parkson says the JV will give it platform for selling men’s, women’s and children’s apparel, shoes and accessories ”to the mass market”.

    No other information has been released to date, including when and where the first stores will open or whether the brand will be launched outside Malaysia.

    Based on its name and the company’s wording, LOL appears to be a fast fashion or outlet concept, perhaps taking the fight back to Uniqlo which is expanding rapidly in Southeast Asia on a value offer.
