Off-white Set To Enter Indian Market: A $5m Investment And Partnership With Brand Concepts

In the first quarter of the upcoming year, the renowned Italian luxury streetwear brand, Off-White, is set to make its debut in the Indian market. This move is a result of an exclusive distribution partnership with Brand Concepts, a prominent fashion retail house.

    Investment and Expansion Plans

Over the next few years, an estimated investment of US$5 million is anticipated to establish the Off-White brand across India. This follows the sale of the brand last year from LVMH to Bluestar Alliance.

Abhinav Kumar, co-founder and CEO of Brand Concepts, stated, “Until now, our primary focus has been on accessories within the premium segments. The launch of Off-White will see us venturing into two new arenas: the luxury segment and the mainstream apparel business.”

    Product Range and Retail Platform

The brand’s diverse product range, which includes apparel, bags, wallets, and a comprehensive footwear line, will be launched under the premium multi-brand store, Bagline. This retail platform currently showcases brands such as Tommy Hilfiger Travel Gear, United Colors of Benetton, and Juicy Couture.

Commenting on the current market trends, Kumar remarked, “The streetwear culture in India is burgeoning, which is evident in the escalating sneaker movement across the country. India, being home to one of the world’s youngest populations, has a timely and relevant demand for streetwear, making it an ideal market for expansion.”

    Future Visibility and Presence

As part of its growth strategy, Off-White aims to bolster its visibility in luxury multi-brand destinations like The Collective and Iconic. Additionally, there are plans to inaugurate two outlets in key metropolitan cities and to launch a bespoke e-commerce platform.

Kumar added, “In the following two to three years, we aim to establish five to six flagship stores, backed by a broader shop-in-shop presence. We anticipate Off-White to be available across 25-30 points of sale in India.”

To bring Off-White to the Indian market, Brand Concepts will collaborate with Sportlux General Trading, a global distributor of luxury brands.

  • LVMH takes control of Off-White label

LVMH takes control of Off-White label

French luxury group LVMH is acquiring a 60% stake in Off-White, the label of designer Virgil Abloh who has been responsible for Louis Vuitton’s men’s collections since 2018.

LVMH reports that it has taken a majority stake in Off-White, the brand launched in Milan in 2013 by American designer Virgil Abloh. This will give the world’s largest luxury goods company a firm foothold in streetwear, a highly profitable segment that has risen to prominence within haute couture in recent years.

LVMH will own 60% of the brand while the founder will retain a 40% stake. Further details of the transaction were not disclosed, writes Les Echos.

Until now, Off-White was controlled by New Guards, an Italian group that also owns Palm Angels and Heron Preston. New Guards was bought by Farfetch in August 2019 for around 600 million euros. As a licensee, Farfetch will continue to operate the brand.

Within its segment, Off-White is a major player. The label already has 56 stores worldwide and counts more than 10 million followers on Instagram. In February, Andrea Grilli, the big boss of New Guards, announced that he is aiming for sales of one billion dollars within five to ten years.

The deal highlights the ever-closer partnership between Abloh and the French luxury house. The story began in 2007, when the designer of Ghanaian-American descent, who at the time was still artistic director for Kanye West, collaborated on the creation of a Fendi collection. In 2015, Abloh was then a finalist for the LVMH Young Designer Award. Three years ago, he was appointed head of Louis Vuitton’s men’s collections.

Italian luxury fashion label Off-White has opened a new monobrand store in Bangkok’s EmQuartier.

Located on M Floor, the Off-White EmQuartier store occupies a 174sqm space, offering a selection of Off-White’s menswear and womenswear collections.

The store facade features gray walls with the Off-White’s logo in yellow. The store’s interior is dressed in curved wood, creating a soft and elegant design.

Off-White’s products are displayed under the wooden wall, which according to the company works as “racking systems and modules for product display”, a feature specially created for this location.

LVMH is “eyeing stakes” in OFF-WHITE‘s parent company

LVMH is “eyeing stakes” in OFF-WHITE‘s parent company, New Guards Group, WWD reports. If the rumors are true, the move would bring LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton even closer to fashion’s main man, Virgil Abloh, the founder of OFF-WHITE and artistic director of menswear at Louis Vuitton.

New Guards Group Holding SpA is a Milan-based holding company that also looks after OFF-WHITE as well as Palm Angels, Heron Preston, and Marcelo Burlon County of Milan.

This is not the only venture on the cards over at LVMH at the moment, either. The company is reportedly also making moves to create Rihanna her own luxury fashion house.

  • Rimowa’s Off-White collaboration

    Rimowa’s Off-White collaboration

When Alexandre Arnault became co-chief executive of Rimowa in October 2016, following its sale to LVMH for €640 million, the 26-year-old son of LVMH chairman Bernard Arnault set about pushing the German luggage label, best known for its ribbed aluminium suitcases, into new territories.

First came a collaboration with the Roman fur and leather house Fendi, followed by a partnership with Los Angeles-based Anti Social Social Club. But it was the company’s tie-up with billion-dollar streetwear juggernaut Supreme that really made a splash.

Now, Arnault is about to drop what could be one of Rimowa’s biggest product collaborations to date: a pair of transparent polycarbonate suitcases created in partnership with Virgil Abloh’s haute streetwear sensation Off-White.

Below is the gallery of the suitcases (3 images) :

“At LVMH, we have a saying that we like to be between tradition and modernity. Rimowa is a 120-year-old brand and what we’re doing with Virgil is a great example of modernity,” explained Arnault, who first teased the collaboration on his personal Instagram account in September 2017 and will officially debut the resulting product on June 20 at Off-White’s Paris menswear show.

The move comes as more and more luxury brands are tapping the cultural energy and business model of streetwear to stay relevant with millennial customers, who drove 85 percent of luxury growth last year and increasingly demand newness and novelty.

“Maybe there’s a bit of fatigue from customers of traditional brands and they’re excited by fresh products done in a different way and this is something that’s really well embraced by streetwear,” said Arnault. “One collaboration in itself won’t be a key sales driver, but ultimately the social media value of them is extremely important for driving awareness and desirability.”

Rimowa will follow the Off-White initiative with a partnership with Parisian streetwear label NasaSeasons. But Arnault says he isn’t planning to continue product collaborations at this pace. “You’ll see us come with collaborations for sure but not all in the same space or at the same scale every two months. I’m very cautious of one collaboration too many.”

Abloh said suitcase he created for Rimowa is transparent in order to let consumers participate in the design process, much as he has with some of his recent sneaker designs for Nike.

“It’s like 3.0 of personalisation. It’s not just putting your initials on it but allowing another layer to come in play,” he explained. “There’s an emotional component to owning [the suitcase] and you become a performance art piece just by using the thing. It’s like putting your items on display and rethinking the premise of a product.”

Abloh was recently named men’s artistic director of Louis Vuitton as part of a series of changes on the men’s side of LVMH, including the appointment of Kim Jones at Dior Homme and the appointment of Kris Van Assche at Berluti. Both Jones and Van Assche are known for their modern, streetwear-savvy sensibilities.

But although the worlds of streetwear and luxury are undoubtedly merging as part of a wider generational shift, Arnault is quick to note that quality will remain a long-term marker of authentic luxury goods. “The thing that changed is the way luxury goods are perceived, marketed and distributed,” he explained. “But people are willing to pay a premium if we know a product comes from a trusted brand with quality craftsmanship — that won’t change.”

“Heritage, quality, craftsmanship and authenticity from the preceding generation of luxury, that’s valuable. Those things won’t waver,” agreed Abloh, “But being a part of the new era is the halo effect, the cultural attachment and relevance. Married in the right way you have the future of how a brand can be one-part luxury from the preceding generation and coveted by the next generation. That’s the unique fit going forward.”

Abloh’s ability to bring his streetwear-infused aesthetic to a major European luxury house will be put to the test later this month when he shows his debut collection for Louis Vuitton.

“What you’ll see with what Kim and Virgil are doing at Dior Homme and Louis Vuitton isn’t the most streetwear-inspired collection — you’re not walking into a skate shop,” hinted Arnault. “They also have to adapt to codes, quality criteria and brand DNA.”

Off-White Set to Launch More Affordable Line “For All”

As speculation grows about an Off-White™ x Nike Soccer collection, Virgil Abloh‘s label has debuted a more affordable line. Titled “For All,” the new collection features pieces such as graphic T-shirts and hoodies at a significantly lower price point than Off-White™ mainline pieces, with tees priced at $95 USD and hoodies at $170 USD.

Speaking to the press about the newly-launched line, Abloh explained that “the price tier allows for a new customer to see themselves within the overall concept of the fashion label. Off-White™ can be luxury at a traditional luxury price point, or equally it can be relevant at an affordable price point.”

The “For All” collection is available now from 11 Off-White™ locations around the world — including the brand’s stores in New York, Hong Kong and Sydney. Abloh has also indicated that there could be more affordable collections on the way, telling BoF that he will drop new releases “periodically but with the freedom to decide where and when in each instance.”

As well as dropping the first “For All” capsule, Off-White™ has also recently released a set of limited edition cycling caps.

  • Balenciaga is the hottest fashion label

Balenciaga is the hottest fashion label

Balenciaga has overtaken Gucci as the hottest fashion label, according to the latest Lyst Index.

The index draws on data analysis by fashion-search platform Lyst in conjunction with the Business of Fashion website. The 4.5 million data points analysed include sales, searches and consumer perceptions of 5 million products and 12,000 brands.

Its result is despite Louis Vuitton, Hermes and Gucci being named best fashion brands globally just last month by Interbrand consultancy.

Ranking the world’s hottest brands and top-selling products, the Lyst Index ranked Gucci first in this year’s second quarter, followed by Kanye West’s Yeezy and Balenciaga. However, the Spanish fashion brand continued to rise, displacing Gucci in the third quarter, with Virgil Abloh’s Off-White rising to third – a jump of 31 places in three months.

Lyst says Balenciaga’s rise was because of a new logo and the Colette residency in Paris keeping the brand top of mind “while Demna Gvasalia continues to design products that drive the fashion narrative online”.

Additionally, the platform praised Gucci for being a “consistent performer”, reports High Snobiety.
Rounding out the top 10 are Vetements, Givenchy, Valentino then Saint Laurent, while Stone Island leaped from 41st to eighth, followed by Moncler (previously 20th) and finally Raf Simons (previously 21st).

Lyst Index also looked at the most influential rappers in fashion for the quarter, listing (in order) Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Pharrell Williams, Cardi B, Drake and A$AP Rocky.

The factory setting is juxtaposed against gold countertops and fixtures, and a mint green curtain and matching carpet on the top floor.

Marking the brand’s second Hong Kong location, Off-White has dropped a 10-piece capsule collection to coincide with the store debut.
