Mary Katrantzou pursues China expansion with an investment from Yu Capital

To boost its presence in China, London-based womenswear brand Mary Katrantzou has received funding from fashion investor Wendy Yu’s investment fund Yu Capital.

With only two points of sale on the Chinese mainland – in the stores of multi-brand retailer Joyce in Beijing and Shanghai – and one in Hong Kong at On Pedder, the Greek designer firmly believes her brand has expansion potential in China.

Katrantzou and Yu are friends, and the designer believes Yu to be an investor with “a pragmatic and forward-looking vision”.

Daughter of Chinese billionaire Jingyuan Yu, the owner of wooden goods company Mengtian, Wendy Yu attended boarding school in the UK, and as an investor aims to “bridge the economic and cultural gap between China and the rest of the world”, reports Fashion Network.

As well as philanthropic activities, notably with the British Fashion Council, the British Museum and the V&A Museum, she founded Yu Capital in 2015, an investment fund specialising in technology, lifestyle and fashion.

Along with Yu Culture, which aims to enrich the Chinese cultural scene through international projects and partnerships, and Yu Fashion, which has the goal of working with brands and designers to promote creativity, Yu Capital is part of Yu Holdings, a platform launched by Yu this month with the aim of investing US$20 million in emerging businesses this year.

Already Yu Capital has invested in brands such as ASAP54, now Fashion Concierge, a fashion-centered search application, and Bottletop, a British leather goods label.

By becoming a minority shareholder in Mary Katrantzou’s brand, Yu has entered the luxury sector. She says the brand, which has its tenth anniversary this year, owes its fame to its whimsical prints and collaborations with Adidas and Longchamp.

On Pedder takes first step into eCommerce

Hong Kong shoe retailer On Pedder has launched an eCommerce site featuring a curated mix of luxury footwear.

It is centered around the retailer’s Pedderzine, a seasonal art-fashion hybrid magazine distributed to customers.

Complimentary shipping is being offered by the site, with returns possible, for customers in Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam, as well as Australia and New Zealand.

Brands include 3.1 Phillip Lim, Aquazzura, Chloe, Common Projects, Gianvito Rossi, Giuseppe Zanotti Design, N⁰21 , Neil Barrett, Nicholas Kirkwood, Paul Andrew, Rene Caovilla, Sophia Webster and Valentino.

More brands are showcased under the “On Pedder Love” section of the site, along with exclusive product.

On Pedder collaborated with Hong Kong photography and video artist Luke Casey for Pedderzine this season, which focuses on Hong Kong and Kowloon’s roots and was shot on the streets of Jordan and Sham Shui Po and Jordan, including karaoke bars, back alleys, markets and brothels.

“We wanted to create an online destination for our customers to enjoy the energy and aesthetics of our in-store curation,” says Pedder Group president Peter Harris.

The company launched a fresh concept there this month, called Pedder on Scotts. At 20,000 square feet, it’s the retailer’s largest store to date. Peter Harris, Pedder Group’s president, said the company’s vast knowledge of the region, coupled with consumer demand for more shoe options, spurred the retailer to make a significant statement.

The store was designed by North America- based architect Abraham Chan and Raymond Chan of Hong-Kong based PLY Union.

Its five curated sections are On Pedder (designers such as Aquazzura, Nicholas Kirkwood, Charlotte Olympia, René Caovilla and Sophia Webster, all of whom will have exclusive styles at the store); On Pedder Men (Alexander Wang, Common Proj- ects, Lanvin and Giuseppe Zanotti); New Generation (contemporary brands such as Ash and Sam Edelman); Weekend & Sports (Havaianas, Birkenstock, Adidas, Superga) and Cool Kids (children’s brands such as Stuart Weitzman and Akid).

“As a brand, we stand for whimsy, creativity and excitement. … What a perfect marriage with the new environment at Pedder on Scotts,” said Sam Edelman, designer, founder and division president of the Sam Edelman division at Caleres. “We applaud Peter for his forward thinking and courage in the retail environment.”

In addition to its core brand mix, the store will offer a rotating selection of pop-up kiosks that change every few months to showcase new labels and collaborations. “Presenting each category in a zone, with dedicated square footage, appropriate visual merchandising and skilled team coverage, allows us
to develop a sense of specialty, amplify- ing each category,” said Harris.

To celebrate the launch, Nicholas Kirkwood joined the team in Singapore for a big opening event last week to present his 10-year anniversary capsule collection. Singapore-based artist Theseus Chan contributed visual graphics for the soirée.

“Pedder Group has partnered with Nicholas since the beginning of his career, hosting him several times in Greater China and Southeast Asia, so he was an obvious choice to celebrate with,” said Harris. “He has a strong customer following here, and we were eager to represent him in the market.”

Pedder on Scotts will continue to generate buzz via additional designer appearances over the next few months, including Athletic Propulsion Labs co-founders Adam and Ryan Goldston, René Caovilla and Paul Andrew.

While Pedder Group is forging ahead with growth initiatives, the overall market in Asia has experienced financial struggles and turmoil.

“The last 12 months have been quite challenging in Asia with regard to the China economy, political uncertainty, currency devaluation, property-value adjustment and stock-market repositioning,” said Harris. “That has been amplified by the decrease in value of the euro and the yen, which has made purchasing in those markets attractive.”

In fact, those issues could give the store an even better opportunity to stand out.

“The Singapore retail landscape is dominated by shopping malls, all concentrated on Orchard Road, with duplicate brand offerings,” said Harris. “The department-store model [delivers] brand adjacencies that tend to be quite non-aligned — there is no single service offer, as the individual concessions are responsible for [their own] staffing, with marketing focused on price promotion.”

Plus, Pedder on Scotts is banking on the opportunity to highlight an important market: the athletic category.

“For the last five years, in line with global trends, we have taken a strong position in developing the sports-and-lifestyle component. Dedicated space, as well as a collaborative process with major brands, have been key to delivering customers a new product choice,” said Harris.

Looking ahead, the Pedder Group will roll out similar concepts at some of its Lane Crawford stores in Hong Kong and China, where footwear square footage ranges from 25,000 square feet to 35,000 square feet. “We will be using some of the formats we have developed for Pedder on Scotts in Singapore at our existing locations. We have also been approached by a number of Chinese developers [about] presenting this format in China, which will be reviewed following our first year of operation [in Singapore],” said Harris.

Pedder Group has opened a 20,000 sqft flagship on Scotts Rd – its largest store in Asia.

The new store dwarves the Hong Kong-headquartered brand’s stores in China and Hong Kong, which are 3000 to 3500 sqft. And it’s four times the size of the On Pedder store it replaces, which closed in June for refurbishment after four years. On Pedder also has a 2000 sqft store at nearby Ngee Ann City.

The Lane Crawford Joyce Group subsidiary has curated a mixture of brands into a high end fashion department store. About 40 brands are exclusive to Pedders, the rest selected from the growing stable of brands Lane Crawford Joyce Group works with in Greater China. The exclusive ranks include American label Sam Edelman, British shoemakers George Cleverley and Foster & Sons, and milliners Lock & Co Hatters from England.

A key highlight of the new shop is the first dedicated menswear store for the brand outside Hong Kong, featuring 35 designer labels, six exclusive, including Giuseppe Zanotti, Lorenzo Villoresi and Japanese cult brand Tomorrowland.

A kidswear section features 20 designer labels along with streetwear brands including Vans, Onitsuka Tiger, Stuart Weitzman and Charlotte Olympia.

And a sportswear department features limited-edition collections from Adidas, Nike, Vans and Converse.

On Pedder plans a regularly roster of pop up stores from a variety of brands to showcase one-off designer collaborations, new brands or special promotions.

And anchoring the whole store from the end of this month will be the first Singapore outlet of successful Hong Kong cafe chain The Coffee Academics, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Coffee Academy has built a strong reputation in Hong Kong for quality espresso-style coffees and holds courses on coffee roasting and blending.

Pedder Group president Peter Harris told the Straits Times in an interview its customers are now shopping vertically across price points and products that suit their lifestyle needs.

“When you talk about luxury now, it applies to a broad section of fashion. The designer footwear that they’re looking for could be the perfect sandals to take on holiday or a pair of sports shoes.

“We want to offer a broader range of footwear and accessories, which cannot be done well with the retail space and format we had at Scotts Square previously.”

Pedder on Scotts officially opens on October 16.
