  • South Korean sees jump in perfume sales despite shrinking cosmetics market

South Korean sees jump in perfume sales despite shrinking cosmetics market

Perfume sales in South Korea have gone up despite the suspension of perfume testing at department stores. Last December, South Korean retailers suspended all practices of testing cosmetic samples at offline vendors in accordance with government regulations, which has led to a plunge in cosmetics sales at department stores.

Cosmetics sales at Lotte Department Store and Hyundai Department Store last month dropped by 22 percent and 8.6 percent, respectively, compared to the same month last year.

As protective masks have become a new norm, demand for color cosmetics had already dropped before the new ban on the use of samples tightened consumption even further.

In contrast, perfume sales at the two department stores jumped by 34 percent and 49.7 percent.

“Consumers are replacing cosmetics with perfumes as a way of expressing themselves in the pandemic era,” Lotte Department Store said.

Bans on testing perfumes at offline vendors have led to a sales jump among online perfume sellers.

S.I. VILLAGE, a luxury shopping platform run by the country’s leading retailer Shinsegae Group, saw last month’s perfume sales jump by a whopping 772 percent compared to the same month in the previous year.

Another major online shopping mall Gmarket saw a 711 percent spike in January sales of perfume, compared to the same month last year.

“More consumers are buying perfumes as they are beginning to use them as an everyday accessory,” an industry official said.

  • Ariana Grande perfume launched, named after her anthem

Ariana Grande perfume launched, named after her anthem

An Ariana Grande perfume has gone on sale, named after her hit song Thank U Next.

The fragrance, released in partnership with Luxe Brands, will launch exclusively on Ulta.com on August 18 before going on shelf in Ulta Beauty retail stores US-wide and at Shoppers Drug Mart in Canada on September 1.

Grande’s hit song debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and went on to break the record for the most-watched music video with 55 million YouTube views in under 24 hours. Thank U, Next has been regarded as the phrase of the year, symbolising moving on and taking control in a self-affirming way.

Following her 2019 Fragrance of the Year win for Cloud, Grande has moved to build a stronger platform for her brand by extending the Thank U, Next franchise into a fragrance.

“For the Thank U, Next fragrance campaign, Grande and Luxe Brands partnered with Hannah Lux Davis to seamlessly weave Grande’s newest fragrance creation into the Thank U, Next world,” said Luxe CMO Noreen Dodge. “Ariana’s creative vision for Thank U, Next perfectly communicates the combination of sexiness and sweetness, while cleverly conveying the details of Ariana’s latest fragrance in a fresh, modern way that is both authentic to Ari and unique to the category.”

“I wanted to make a fragrance that smells related to my first fragrance Ari but more summery,” said Grande. “So I revisited Ari’s fruity pear and raspberry notes and changed it up by adding some coconut. I was inspired to design a bottle that represented the message of my song – the emergence of the perfume from the broken heart represents moving forward from a challenging chapter.”

Crafted by Robertet’s Jerome Epinette, the perfumer and artisan behind Byredo and Atelier Cologne, Jerome was inspired to develop new territory with the new fragrance.

“Each of Ariana’s fragrances surpasses the last and Thank U, Next will be no exception,” said Luxe CEO Tony Bajaj. “The scent, packaging and campaign are all a perfect representation of Ariana’s globally embraced message. It is remarkable how Ariana connects with her fans and shares her incredible passion through everything she does.”

“Building on the global appeal and success of Ariana Grande, we have strategically grown the international footprint of her fragrance franchise,” said Designer Parfums CEO Dilesh Mehta. “Our success is in partnership with Luxe Brands and our key retail partners Boots and Superdrug in the UK and exclusively with Douglas in over 12 countries.”

Nest Fragrances opens flagship store in New York City

Luxury-lifestyle brand Nest Fragrances has opened its first retail store in the NoLita neighborhood of Lower Manhattan. For the first time anywhere, the new Nest Fragrances flagship store unites the brand’s entire product portfolio in one retail location, which company founder Laura Slatkin describes as “an enchanted, fragranced garden”.

Nest Fragrances partnered with New York-based interior design firm R. Douglas Gellenbeck Studio to conceptualise and build its first retail store. MJ Atelier, an art studio based in Los Angeles, was commissioned to create a hand-painted, sculpted wall covering for the store inspired by early 20th-Century French interior designer Armand-Albert Rateau’s bath design, which he created for the Duchess of Alba.

“Our brand’s mission is to create exceptional fragrances that shape moods, transport people, and transform spaces,” continued Slatkin. “Since 2008, when I founded Nest Fragrances, I have drawn inspiration from art, fashion, destinations, and literary works combined with the beauty of nature and its natural elements to create fragrances and products to achieve that mission. Now, 10 years later, I am thrilled that we have come full circle by successfully applying that same approach and fragrance-forward philosophy to achieve our mission in our very first retail store. Consumers will see a lot more of it as we continue to expand our footprint at retail in the coming years.”

The 1140sqft store sells more than 215 SKUs across the brand’s three core product categories. It will also offer limited-edition products and specialty gift sets across its three core product categories – as well as year-round specialty gift sets, the option to create custom-made gift sets, candle accessories, and a concierge delivery service in New York.

Perfumer’s Workshop finds its niche in Asian travel retail

Niche fragrance specialist Perfumer’s Workshop International (PWI) is looking to make a move into travel retail locations in Malaysia, Sri Lanka and India following feedback from buyers at this year’s TFWA Asia Pacific Exhibition in Singapore.

PWI Founder Donald Bauchner said his company’s success at the show was due to the “dramatic increase in awareness and attention to niche in general, and for oud concepts specifically”.

Tea Rose w Petals High Res

Tea Rose and Amouroud: two of Perfumer’s Workshop International’s signature lines

Bauchner said PWI was considering domestic market openings for its Amouroud line in Singapore, South Korea, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh and Pakistan and is negotiating travel retail opportunities in Malaysia, India, Sri Lanka, Abu Dhabi and Russia.

PWI’s oud-based Amouroud line will make its debut at London’s Harrods department store on 15 July. “We are very excited about our launch at Harrods,” said Bauchner. “Of course it will impact our travel retail opportunities within the UK. However we are not certain whether we would prefer to start travel retail and duty free in the UK at airports or inflight. Consumer profile will likely decide the issue but only once the timing itself is right,” he added.

PWI added two new fragrances, Midnight Rose and Miel Sauvage, to its Amouroud range which was presented in Singapore and extended its Samba Metallics line.

    Samba Metallic Range.HR

Samba Metallics is based on a colour preference influencing fragrance preference concept

“The Samba Metallics concept actually does work,” Bauchner said. “The interest at the show was very good. However we targeted our presentations to only those distributors who are actual ‘trend-setters’ in their regions.”

PWI’s Zipped Man, targeting “fashion-conscious young ‘trendies’”, and Parfum Tea Rose were also highlighted in Singapore.

Speaking at the TFWA Asia Pacific Exhibition, Bauchner said he predicts further growth for niche brands in Asia. “Generally niche customers do not want something that other people are wearing. They are not looking for a new signature scent. They are hunters, looking for a scent that they are not going to find everyone else wearing,” he said.

“What will be interesting to see will be the eventual relationship between niche and prestige fragrance in Asia. There is a possibility that niche in Asia will eventually occupy as large, or a larger, section of the fine fragrance local market than in Europe  because what we refer to as ‘Western fine fragrance’ came late to Asia and therefore remains a far smaller market than elsewhere.

“We believe that our Amouroud collection will perform very well in Asia because we are attuned to many Asian fragrance sensibilities: refinement, beauty, unique fragrance character, long lasting and qualitative packaging.

“Asia was late coming to niche products and even later developing an interest in oud. But, hey, we are here. We have a wonderful concept that is proving to be well liked,” Bauchner concluded.
