    Cebu Pacific to launch Laoag flights in May

    Budget carrier Cebu Pacific is set to mount flights to the Ilocos Norte capital of Laoag starting May 22, making it the 35th domestic destination in the airline’s network.

    Cebu Pacific said flights from Manila to Laoag will be daily, as the airline seeks to tap travelers seeking to explore the Ilocos region.

    “Laoag plays a crucial role in preserving the country’s rich history and culture, and we are excited to finally be able to bring more Juans to this beautiful city,” President and Chief Commercial Officer Xander Lao said in a statement.

    “We hope the launch of the Laoag route will encourage more people to travel and experience the Ilocos region,” he added.

    The carrier reported a P14-billion net loss in 2022, marking an improvement from the P24.9-billion net loss incurred in the previous year as it cut its operating loss by about half to P11.4 billion.

    The company is set to add 11 more aircraft to its fleet this 2023, seeking to return to profitability within the first quarter of the year.

    Shares in Cebu Air Inc., which operates the carrier, were trading up by P0.05 or 0.12% at P41.70 apiece as of 11:59 a.m. on Wednesday.

    AirAsia X adds three new routes

    AirAsia X confirms its latest services to Melbourne (Tullamarine), and Perth in Australia and Auckland in New Zealand will launch on 1 November 2022.

    The three new services boost the airline’s routes to 13. It is already serving  Sydney, New Delhi, Seoul, Tokyo, Sapporo, Osaka and Honolulu, as well as London, Dubai and Istanbul.

    AAX will recommence its services to Melbourne (Tullamarine), Perth and Auckland (via Sydney) with three weekly flights starting in November and gradually increasing to daily flights by the first quarter of 2023.

    On the AirAsia Super App and website, the starting fare to Perth is MYR 499, to Melbourne  MYR699 and Auckland MYR999 (inclusive one-way economy). Premium Flatbed fares start from MYR1,999 to Perth, MYR2,999 to Melbourne and MYR5,999 to Auckland.

    Guests flying to Kuala Lumpur can also enjoy all-in value fares one way from AUD209 from Perth, AUD359 from Melbourne, and NZD499 from Auckland in economy class.

    AAX also flies from Kuala Lumpur to Sydney with all-in fares from MYR899 (economy) and MYR2,799 (Premium Flatbed) one-way.

    Amazon will open a new fulfillment center in Perth by the end of the year to keep up with increasing demand and offer fast delivery to more customers, the e-commerce company has said.

    The facility, which is expected to be operational in late 2019, is Amazon’s third warehouse in Australia. It also has warehouses in Melbourne and Sydney.

    “This expansion represents the investment and development of our growth strategy in Australia, following a steady and progressive increase in customer demand,” said Craig Fuller, director of operations at Amazon Australia, said in a statement.

    “We strongly believe that this further investment will benefit both customers and the local economy and give Western Australian (WA) customers quicker delivery of high demand items.”

    Located in the Perth Airport Business Precinct, the new facility is expected to give customers in WA access to the same delivery options as customers on the East Coast of the country.

    Amazon currently offers same-day delivery only to customers in eligible postcodes in Sydney and Melbourne. It costs $9.99 for those with Prime and $12.99 for those without.

    Customers in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Canberra can also get free expedited delivery (1-2 business days) if they have Prime, or pay $5.99 if they don’t.

    But the fastest delivery option (1 business day) for customers in other metropolitan areas, including Perth and the Gold Coast, costs $9.99 – even for those with Prime. Those without currently need to pay $11.99.

    AirAsia has launched a four-times-a-week service between Perth and Lombok, with the inaugural flight touching down on Sunday night.

    With fares starting at just $99 one way, the flights are set to be popular with Aussie tourists keen to sample the destination known as “the new Bali”.

    Dendy Kurniawan, AirAsia Indonesia CEO, said the flights would introduce healthy competition for the region and an additional option to much-loved Bali.

    “Blissful beaches, top surfing and dive sites, and picturesque mountains are now easily accessible for Australians and I encourage those looking to book their next holiday to consider Lombok,” he said.

    Perth Airport CEO Kevin Brown said the new service consolidated AirAsia’s position in the Perth market by adding more than 74,000 seats annually.

    “AirAsia has been in the vanguard of a low-cost carrier revolution that has delivered more affordable and accessible travel options for many Western Australians,” Mr Brown said.

    “Western Australians have a great propensity for travel and Indonesia represents Perth Airport’s largest outbound market as it offers an easily accessible and attractive destination for travellers.

    “This new service also provides an opportunity to grow the Indonesian inbound tourism market for Perth and Western Australia.”

    Indonesia represents WA’s eighth largest visitor market. Last year 31,000 Indonesian visitors arrived, injecting more than $56 million into the WA economy.

    AirAsia operates 25 flights per week between Perth, Australia and Indonesia, which includes Bali, and Lombok.

    This leaves just one daily flight on the Star Alliance member’s older Airbus A330, and its days are surely numbered.

    The Airbus A350’s 40 business class seats are arranged in a 1-2-1 layout, providing every passenger with direct aisle access, with access to inflight WiFi if you need to work rather than rest – or luxuriate over your Book the Cook meal – on the quick five-hour hop.

    Singapore Airlines intends to roll out lie-flat beds across its entire fleet from 2020, from the longest of globe-spanning trips to short hops such as Singapore-Kuala Lumpur on SilkAir, which will be adopting new flat-bed business class seats on its factory-fresh Boeing 737s.

    An AirAsia Indonesia flight has been forced to turn back to Australia after pilots were alerted to a possible loss of cabin pressure, airport officials say. Flight QZ535, bound for the Indonesian island of Bali, changed course about 25 minutes after take-off on Sunday.

    The Airbus A320, carrying 151 people, landed safely at Perth Airport. AirAsia said the flight experienced a “technical issue”. Australian media said it had appeared to lose altitude.

    “We were all pretty much saying goodbye to each other. It was really upsetting,” one passenger told the local Nine network.

    A video taken on the plane, broadcast by local media, shows oxygen masks hanging from the ceiling and one person shouting “passengers get down, passengers get down”.

    Another passenger, Claire Askew, told that “panic was escalated” by airline staff who were screaming and appeared to be in tears.

    In a statement, AirAsia said it was “fully committed” to the safety of passengers. It did not elaborate on the problem.

    “AirAsia apologises to passengers for any inconvenience caused,” the statement said.

    In June, an AirAsia X flight on its way to Bali was also forced to turn back to Perth after an engine problem left it “shaking like a washing machine”.

    In December 2014, an AirAsia plane crashed into the Java Sea, killing all 162 people on board after the aircraft’s rudder control system malfunctioned during the flight.

    The Australian watch and jewellery retailing industry grew by an annualised 2.9% over the five years through 2016-17, to reach $3.3 billion, according to Ibis World.

    Singtel, Australia’s Telstra and SubPartners have jointly entered an agreement to build a new subsea cable linking Australia and Singapore.

    The new APX-West cable will run between Perth on the west coast of Australia to Singapore. The two fiber pair cable will have a minimum design capacity of 10Tbps.

    Construction of the 4,500km cable is expected to commence at the end of July and scheduled for completion in 2018.

    APX-West will serve as an alternative to the SEA-ME-WE 3, the current data bridge between Signapore and Perth, and will help expand data connectivity and capacity between Singapore and Australia.

    “The APX-West cable will be a new data superhighway to expand data connectivity and capacity between Singapore and Australia, providing network redundancy and the lowest latency from Australia to Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Europe,” Singtel group enterprise VP for carrier services Ooi Seng Keat said.

    “With these capabilities, the Singtel Group, including Optus, can meet customers’ growing data requirements for bandwidth-intensive applications such as unified communications, enterprise data exchange, internet TV and online gaming.”

    Telstra is Australia’s largest operator by revenue, and Singtel operates Optus, Telstra’s main rival.

    Among the recent changes at the international terminal, Etihad has introduced a daily Perth-to-Abu Dhabi service (with connecting flights to Europe), while Garuda Indonesia Perth-to-Jakarta flights now can be connected through London to Amsterdam.

    However, Perth lost its regular Qantas service to Singapore in May, while Jetstar Airways cancelled its Perth-to-Jakarta flights and will cease its four-times weekly service to Lombok next month.

    Philippine Airways Perth-to-Manila-via-Darwin service also stopped in June last year.

    Qantas’s decision to drop regular services to Singapore, and operate only seasonal flights, has been somewhat mitigated by discount airline Scoot, which has been operating the route five times a week since last December.

    According to official figures for the year ended June 2014, Singapore is the most popular international city for flights to and from Perth Airport.

    Just over 1 million people flew between Singapore and Perth, while about 830,000 flew to or from Denpasar.

    For the year ended December 2013, Singapore Airlines operated the most international seats into and out of Perth, followed by Emirates.

    Discount airlines Indonesia AirAsia, AirAsiaX and JetStar Airways rounded out the top five airlines carrying the most passengers to and from Perth.

    Starting this December, Air New Zealand will offer more direct seasonal Perth-to-Christchurch flights, having this week introduced its 787-9 Dreamliner service.

    International passengers at Perth Airport account for 12.5 per cent of all international passenger traffic through Australia.

    Nationally, the cities most often flown into or from Australia last year were Singapore (accounting for 16.6 per cent of total passenger movements), Auckland (13.1 per cent), Kuala Lumpur (7.8 per cent), Dubai (7.8 per cent) and Hong Kong (6.8 per cent).

The Perth-Singapore service will depart Perth at midday and arrive into Singapore at 5.20pm, with the return leg departing Singapore at 6.25pm, arriving into Perth at 11.40pm.

    Since ending its regular Perth-Singapore service in May 2014, Qantas operated seasonal flights between the two cities during the peak July 2014 holiday period. Qantas also operates a seasonal Perth-Auckland service.
