    Google Play Store to make app installs easier with an always visible Install button

    If you own an Android phone, you probably spend a lot of time in the Google Play Store, where countless apps and games are available to choose from. However, sometimes app listings can get so lengthy that the Install button can disappear, forcing you to scroll back to the top, which, to be honest, can be annoying. Well, an upcoming change to the Google Play Store aims to address this by making the Install button a permanent fixture on app listings.

    A recent report suggests that Google Play Store version 43.1.19 contains code hinting at a feature that will keep the header fixed in place on app listings. This means the Install button will remain visible as you scroll through the app details.

    The header is packed with essential info about the app, including its icon, name, developer, average rating from the Play Store, and whether it has ads. You’ll also spot the handy Install button for quick downloads right to your device, plus a dropdown that lets you install the app on your other gadgets. And the best part? This header sticks around, so you can always access it easily.

    It may seem like a minor tweak, but I think this change could really benefit app developers. Why? Well, while a lengthy app store listing does a great job of informing users, it unintentionally punishes developers for being thorough. When the Install button is stuck at the top, the more you scroll down, the more likely you will bounce instead of scrolling back up to hit that button.

    If the Install button had a fixed position, users could easily download the app after checking out the details, ultimately boosting conversions for developers who invest time in creating rich, informative listings.

    In other news from the Google Play Store, there’s chatter that it might soon spotlight tablet-optimized apps that are also compatible with cars. On top of that, the search feature is getting a new spot on Android tablets and foldable devices.

    New useful features to hit the Google Play store app soon

    Two new features are headed to Google’s Play store app on Android and they are aiming at improving the user experience in different but notable ways. We’re to see a brand new download progress indicator and the option to archive apps.

    Currently, if you want to check how much longer you’ll have to wait before that new app gets installed, you’ll have to bring down the quick settings menu. The download progress will be displayed just underneath it, along with your notifications.

    While that is great, it is somewhat limiting, as you don’t have a persistent indicator. Having one always-on screen – or the option to enable it – might help out people with limited connection speeds, who need to wait until one download is done before starting another.

    Hence, the new download bubble is the upcoming solution. Reportedly, it will hang around on your screen and showcase your download’s progress, allowing you to browse the store or do something else until the installation is done.

    If you are one of those folks who aren’t interested in such a feature: don’t worry! If you don’t want to see it, you can never enable it. And if you do, it allows you to move it or dismiss it, so even if you turn it on, you can always quickly send it away.

    Great? Great! What’s better? Having options. Another new feature is expected, namely the ability to Archive apps, instead of outright uninstalling them. This one was also officially announced, so it’s not as much of a surprise.

    Archiving basically allows you to delete an app, but keep the personal data associated with it. Personal data typically contains your settings, login information, and, for gamers – save data.

    This option is meant to help out users with phones with smaller storage capacities. So, if you ever find yourself in a situation where you are running low on space, you could always Archive an app, without having to worry about losing any progress or settings.

    At any point, after you’ve Archived an app, you could visit its page on Google Play and hit the Restore button, which at that point would’ve replaced Install. Whenever you do that, the app will download its missing files, allowing you to use it again fully.

    Well, given that we’ve got this info thanks to an App teardown, that would mean that these functions are already in there in some capacity. Though that doesn’t mean that they are ready for release, it means that they are being actively tested.

    As such, we can expect these features to become available soon to the public. If you happen to notice that you’ve got an update for the Play store pending, you should make a mental note to check for these in your app settings.

    Google has added in the listing of each app the version of Android required to download said app on a mobile device. Previously, this information was only posted on the web version of the Play Store but it can now be easily found on an Android phone.

    Let’s look at some random apps. The Chess-Play and Learn app has been downloaded more than 10 million times and has a 4.7-star rating. If you look at the listing on your phone, go to the “About this game” listing and tap the arrow on the right side of the screen to open a page that goes into great detail about the app.

    Now scroll down to the bottom and you’ll see a heading titled “Game info.” Look for an entry called Android OS which shows the required version of Android needed to install this game, which happens to be Android 5.0 in this example. That means that anyone who wants to install this game must be using a phone running Android 5.0 or higher.

    One last example. Let’s look at CNN. Go to the Play Store and search for the CNN app (which has over 50 million downloads and a 4.5-star rating). When you see the listing for it, find the “About this app” heading and tap on the arrow at the right of the screen. That takes you to the About this app page.

    Scroll down to the App info section and look for the Android OS entry. There you will see that to install the CNN app on your Android phone, it needs to run Android 6.0 and up. Those who use the play.google.com website have probably seen the Requires Android entry on the listing of an app in the web version of the Play Store.

    Why Google decided to add this information to the mobile Google Play Store is unknown since any app that has a minimum requirement newer than the Android version you are currently using should not appear on your screen. For example, using the CNN app once again, since it requires that the user own a phone running Android 6.0 or higher, phones that are running Android 5.0 or lower will not see the CNN listing on the Play Store app.

    The update including this change was just disseminated on Friday and is version 29.2.13. We are not sure how many Android users would go through the trouble of looking up this information since it is not necessary, but perhaps Google has something under its sleeve that we are not privy to.

    Earlier in the week we told you that Google has released a new app icon installation feature to 14 games in the Play Store and in the process borrowed the circular progress bar used with iOS. For example, if you install an app on iOS 15.3.1 from the App Store, a circular progress bar shows you the pace at which the app you chose to download is being downloaded and installed on your iPhone. While the new Android app icon installation feature is not exactly the same, you are sure to spot the similarities.

    When you install an app from the Play Store, a circular progress bar circles the icon of the app you are downloading on the home screen. When finished, the progress bar around the icon starts anew for the installation of the app. When that is finished, you are left with the icon of the app on the home screen of your Android device. You can open the Google Play Store listing of the app at anytime if you decided not to download the app before it is finished installing on your device.

    As of this month onwards, Google is completely changing the game when it comes to the development and functionality of applications published on the Google Play store.

    Until now, most Android apps have been submitted to the Play Store packaged in the traditional APK format, or Android Package Kit. In this form, an app is packaged into one single bundle that goes up on the Play Store, and is then downloaded in that same compact form to desiring Android customers, with all the odds and ends included.

    As simple as it sounds, this is hardly the optimal delivery standard, mainly because it may burden the user with much more than they will need or use on their particular device.

    From August 1, however, Google is obligating Android software developers to deliver all their applications via the newer AAB (Android App Bundle) framework. The good news is that the shift won’t constitute a huge hassle for developers, as they don’t have to change too much on their end between the two standards.

    Now, you may be thinking that this probably only concerns developers, and won’t affect the everyday end user—but that would be far from the truth. The new app delivery format allows for much greater compartmentalization of components within the app, prioritization, and optimization in order to deliver the smoothest experience to whichever Android device you are using.

    Here is what this all means:

    1. No unnecessary app clutter

    In the older APK format, if a developer wanted their Android app to be usable on multiple Android device types (smartphones and tablets, for example), they would go one of two routes. In the first scenario, they would create all the necessary particularities and differing graphics for each device that will use the app, and bundle them all together into a single application on the Play Store.

    When a user downloads the APK app on their phone, then, they often end up with unnecessary odds and ends that are particular to other devices, which they’ll never use or need on their own phone.

    Alternatively, developers could also create and publish separate APK’s for each Android device the app will be run on, but that’s obviously inconvenient and a general hassle.

    But with apps bundled in the AAB framework, the Play Store is able to smartly split up the bundle into separate APK’s, recognizing which one is right for your device, and thus only downloading what’s necessary. These optimized APK’s are 15% more compact than their old counterparts, Google claims.

    2. Effective Compartmentalization

    The AAB framework allows apps to be broken down into components with differing targets and priorities, which may be downloaded one at a time to the end user, as needed. The Play Store will then automatically know which version or components to deliver to a user’s specific device, without cluttering them with unnecessary packages.

    Games or other heavier, multi-layered apps will also have the ability to be downloaded to your phone part by part, as the need arises. If you start a new graphics-heavy game, then, the Play Store could download it to your device level by level (or a few levels at a time), for example—so you don’t have to bother with insane loading times every time you open the app.

    Developers also have the freedom to play around with optional add-ons, such as augmented reality—which may work on some devices but not others—which come separately and are only downloaded to the appropriate device, when needed.

    3. Reduced load on cheaper phones

    While the Google Play Store changes will certainly streamline the average app user experience even on the newest of flagships, those with older or slower phones should see a significant difference in load times and reduced device strain.

    Because older or low-tier phones generally have weaker processors and less storage space, they will see the biggest improvement in the way newer AAB apps behave.

    Google created AAB in 2018

    The new AAB format was actually launched along with Android 9 in 2018, and has been free for developers to use at their own discretion this whole time. It’s also completely open-source and available for other application libraries to adopt if they choose.

    Google reports that already one thousand of the most popular apps are built on AAB’s, and there are already over 1 million live apps using the newer format.

    While AAB is not a novel framework in and of itself, with the new requirement that all Google Play apps be submitted in AAB’s, Google is simply enforcing the already trending, more efficient format across the Android platforms for the benefit of the end user, and at no serious cost on the development side.

    Traditional APK’s that are already on the Play Store will stay and work just fine, as only future apps will be impacted.

    The one downside, as noted by Wired, is that because AAB is Google’s handiwork, and Google controls the full packaging and verification process, the tech giant is tightening the rains on the Play Store ecosystem, wielding complete control over app distribution in the foreseeable future.

    Thirty-seven U.S. state and district attorneys general sued Alphabet. Google on Wednesday, alleging that it bought off competitors and used restrictive contracts to unlawfully maintain a monopoly for its app store on Android phones.

    The allegations about Google’s Play Store stem from an investigation involving nearly every U.S. state that began in September 2019 and have already resulted in three other lawsuits against the company. The cases threaten to force major changes to how it generates billions of dollars in revenue across its businesses, including advertising, in-app purchases and smart home gadgets.

    Google said on Wednesday the litigation was about boosting a handful of major app developers that want preferential treatment rather than about helping small businesses or consumers. It maintains that unlike Apple with its App Store on iPhones, Android supports competitors to the Play Store.

    “Android and Google Play provide openness and choice that other platforms simply don’t,” the company said in a blog post.

    The states, led by Utah, New York, North Carolina and Tennessee, argue that Google has generated “enormous profit margins” from the Play Store by engaging in illegal tactics to preserve monopolies in selling Android apps and in-app goods.

    In the United States, Google Play accounts for 90% of Android apps downloaded, according to the lawsuit.

    “Google leverages its monopoly power with Android to unlawfully maintain its monopoly in the Android app distribution market,” the lawsuit stated.

    In a post published today on the Android Developers Blog, new guidance has been created to help developers give the Play Store the information it needs to make sure that their apps get attention from Android users. Images, video, descriptions and even the app name itself play an important role in determining whether an app stands out from among the millions of apps and games available in over 190 countries.

    Google says, “Google Play is increasingly showing more of your assets front and center, surfacing graphic assets and descriptions right on Apps and Games home. To make sure that the store listing assets are giving users ensure that your store listing assets can help users anticipate your in-app or in-game experience and drive meaningful downloads, we are pre-announcing a policy change for app metadata and introducing new guidelines on Store listing preview assets.”

    The changes being made to app metadata will limit the title of an app listed in the Play Store to 30 characters. Google also does not want graphic images and texts to promote an app’s ranking in the Play Store. For example, an icon that says “#1 stock market app” is a no-no. Text and graphic elements can not be used to promote a deal, and capitalized letters are out unless it is part of how a company stylizes its name.

    There are also new preview asset guidelines for feature graphics, screenshots, videos, and short descriptions. Google says it wants to know whether the preview assets accurately represent the app or game and whether they deliver enough information to help users reach a decision about installing the app. The preview assets cannot use buzzwords like “free” or “best,” and must focus on “providing meaningful information” about the things that make your app or game unique.

    The guidelines will be valid starting in the second half of the year. Google says that “Assets that don’t meet our guidelines may be ineligible for promotion and recommendation on major Google Play surfaces like Apps and Games home.”

    Google has started to disseminate the next major redesign of the Google Play Store. The big change is the removal of the hamburger menu to the left of the search bar. Tap the profile photo in the upper right corner and you’ll see a menu that gives you access to your apps, games, payment methods, Google Play points and more.

    The settings menu is now broken up into four different categories such as General (information pertaining to your account, auto-update, auto-play video options, and a lot more different preferences you can choose from), User Controls (fingerprint controls and purchase authentication), Family (parental control and a parent guide), and About. The latter gives you information like the version of the Play Store installed on your device.

    Google has been rolling out the redesigned Play Store for weeks and the distribution of the new design is getting wider. If for some reason you don’t have the new version, you can try and force the issue by long-pressing on the Play Store app on the home screen to get the App info page. Tap on “Force Stop” and the next time the Play Store app is opened, it should feature the new design.

    Yesterday, we learned that Google I/O will once again be a streamed affair. The event will take place May 18th through the 20th and we should learn then about what Google has up its sleeve for Android 12.

    Remember when the Google Play Store was called the Android Market? Google changed the name on March 6th, 2012. Twenty-six months later, Gmail became the first Android app to reach 1 billion installs. Since then, two other apps in the Play Store have been installed over 5 billion times-that is, until today. Google Maps and YouTube have been joined in the exclusive club by the Google app.

    Video streaming site YouTube was the first Android app to hit 5 billion downloads, and was followed this past weekend by navigation app Google Maps. Now, the Google app itself  has joined the club. Technically, there are four members if you include Google Play Services, but this is a systems app that allows an Android phone to update Google developed apps and apps from the Google Play Store.

    The three apps, YouTube, Google Maps and Google, are not only must-haves for every Android user, they are also pre-installed on every Android phone that comes with Google Play Services out of the box. When an app is pre-loaded onto an Android device, that is included in the total number of installations.

    Google has worked on expanding the features offered by each of the three apps in the 5 billion installs club. Besides offering streaming videos from amateurs, the site now includes trailers from movies and clips taken from television shows. In addition, YouTube now offers its own original programming for paid subscribers. Google Maps has added several new navigation based items, including the ability to report a crash or speed trap, a speed limit reminder, and more. It also has moved into the lifestyle category by showing places of interest to visit in your home town and locations you travel to.

    The Google app, which helps users search for websites, also reports news, sports and weather of interest to the user. A summary of the user’s schedule for the day can be seen thanks to Google Calendar integration, and a list of stock prices can be monitored. All three apps do have iOS counterparts in the Apple App Store.

    Vietnam’s Vinaphone has become the fourth and last of the nation’s four major mobile operators to launch carrier billing over Google Play using the Fortumo payments platform.

    The operator’s 20 million subscribers will be able to use the Fortumo platform to pay for apps and in-app content using their airtime balance.

    With the launch, 95% of the population of Vietnam can now make payments on Google Play through Fortumo – significant for a country with smartphone penetration of 40% but credit card ownership of below 2%.

    Fortumo will also provide Vinaphone with access to its Fortumo Insight statistics and data analytics platform, which helps operators analyze the performance of Google Play and use the data to make improvements to their payment infrastructure and marketing campaigns using the platform.

    “Vietnam is one of Asia’s fastest growing markets for mobile services. Vinaphone has been able to successfully capitalize on this expansion and enabling Google Play for carrier billing is the logical step for Vinaphone to accelerate the growth further,” Forumo chief business officer Gerri Kodres said.

    “Fortumo has established itself as the provider of choice for carriers in Asia and we are proud to help Vinaphone make Google Play payments available to millions of their users.”
