    PyeongChang 2018 to Open 1st Official Shop This Week

    The first official shop of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Games will open in the South Korean capital this week, selling licensed merchandise associated with the international sporting event, local organizers said Thursday.

    The PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games (POCOG) said the official merchandise store of the games will open to the public Friday at Lotte Department Store’s Myeongdong branch in central Seoul.

    The store, run by South Korean retail giant Lotte Group, also one of the sponsors for the PyeongChang Games, will sell products related with both the Olympics and the Paralympics in PyeongChang, Gangwon Province, some 180 kilometers east of Seoul. The POCOG said some 300 items, including stuffed animals of the PyeongChang Games mascots, Bandabi and Soohorang, are currently available for sale, but the number of products will double by the end of June and reach 2,000 by October.

    The POCOG said the opening ceremony for the official store will take place Sunday, featuring its honorary ambassador and speed skater Park Seung-hi, as well as other South Korean celebrities.

    The POCOG said two more official PyeongChang 2018 stores will open next month at Lotte’s department store and duty-free shop in Seoul.

    The PyeongChang Winter Olympics will kick off Feb. 8 next year for a 17-day run.

    Huawei to supply network for PyeongChang 2018

    Huawei announced it has been selected as an official network equipment supplier for the 2018 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in PyeongChang.

    As an official supplier, Huawei will deliver a comprehensive network system covering a games, administration and facility network.

    The vendor facilitate the delivery of services including real-time competition data transmission, broadband certification for audiences and stadium security protection.

    A network equipment supply and sponsorship agreement was signed in Seoul yesterday by the PyeongChang Organizing Committee’s (POCOG) president and CEO Lee Hee-beom and Huawei’s enterprise business group president Yan Lida.

    “We are honored to be selected as the Official Network Equipment Supplier of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games,” Lida said at the ceremony.

    “With a wealth of expertise in network construction for large-scale sports events and stadiums, Huawei will provide full support to POCOG in building a cutting-edge network for the Games.”

    Nokia to deploy first LTE-R network in Korea

    Nokia has secured a contract to deploy the world’s first LTE-R (LTE-railway) LTE network in South Korea.

    The vendor will deploy the network on a railway line between Wonju and Gangneung as part of a line extension to prepare for next year’s Winter Olympics in PyeongChang.

    The network will support both operational and maintenance services on a high-speed commercial railway line operating at speeds of up to 250 km/h, providing high-speed connectivity between trains, stations and other railway facilities.

    Nokia said the project is intended to serve as a model for future deployments of LTE-R technology and help further define LTE-R standardization efforts.

    “South Korea has been a world leader in the use of mobile broadband technology to make public services of all kinds safer, more efficient and reliable,” Nokia head of Korea Andrew Cope said.

    “With a thirty-year history in the delivery of GSM-R mobile networking technology for railways, and as a pioneer in the development of LTE-R solutions, we are pleased to partner with KRNA to bring these cutting edge capabilities to the country as they prepare to host one of the world’s premier sporting events.”
