Global lifestyle brand for gamers, Razer, has launched its Southeast Asia headquarters in Singapore: home to the country’s first Razer retail store and café.  The building façade features the brand’s signature black and striking neon green, while the store offers the brand’s full range of products, allowing gaming fans to sample and experience Razer’s latest innovations and creations.

Meanwhile, the new technology-focused F&B concept serves beverages made by a state-of-the-art robotic barista arm. At the RazerCafe, guests can order a beverage at the store or pre-order a cup of coffee via the RazerCafe App and collect it in-store.

Razer Fintech, the financial technology arm of Singapore gaming and technology brand Razer, is expanding its fintech offerings and its payments ecosystem for customers with access to a buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) solution provided by Rely, it announced in a statement.

The service will be offered in Southeast Asia to merchants registered under Razer Merchant Services (RMS), its B2B (business-to-business) solution. RMS includes online payments and a card processing gateway, and the region’s largest offline payment network of over 1 million physical acceptance points.

The announcement noted the growing popularity of BNPL, citing a Finder survey from October 2020 that said almost 1.1 million Singaporeans have used a BNPL service.

Razer releases data on 100,000 customers

Global gaming retailer, manufacturer and payments ecosystem Razer has inadvertently exposed personal information about some 100,000 of its customers online due to a misconfigured server.

The data was stored on an Elasticsearch cluster that was set to allow public access, potentially exposing the customers to targeted phishing attacks by individuals posing as the company. Sensitive personal data such as credit card numbers and passwords were not revealed.

According to a comment posted by the firm, the server misconfiguration was fixed on September 9 prior to the lapse being made public. The information had been exposed for three weeks as Razer’s non-technical staff processed a report alerting the firm to the problem.

The breach was uncovered by cybersecurity consultant Volodymyr Diachenko, who has since offered to conduct a live educational session to raise cybersecurity awareness within the firm. It is unclear whether or not Razer has accepted the offer.

Razer Fintech generated $1.8 billion in total purchase value in the first half of the year, representing an increase of 114.3 percent year-on-year, and just shy of the $2.1 billion it achieved across the whole of 2019. This was driven by the onboarding of new merchants and surges in online shopping and digital entertainment consumption activities due to the COVID-19 lockdown, Razer said in the announcement.

Razer recorded a record high revenue of $447.5 million, with 25.3 percent year-on-year growth for the period, driven by strong growth across its Peripherals portfolio, strong double-digit percentage year-on-year growth for Systems in May and June, and phenomenal growth in the services business.

The company is also looking abroad for more opportunities in this field. «We want to build a global business and leverage on the Razer Inc side of things as they grow alongside the fintech business, Lee said.

Razer Fintech is one of the largest offline-to-online digital payment networks in Southeast Asia and has processed billions of dollars in total payment value since its establishment in 2018. Razer Fintech, the financial technology arm of Singapore gaming and technology brand Razer, is partnering with the Singapore Fintech Association (SFA) to address business continuity concerns, high business costs, funding and employment issues arising from the Covid-19 pandemic.

The partnership will leverage Razer’s $50 million Covid-19 fund to support business partners and help them tide over the negative impact brought about by the virus outbreak.

Four pillars of support are being provided: cash flow and marketing support programs; partnerships or investment for best-in-class companies; support for certification, screening and reference checks; and joint networking events, according to an announcement on Thursday.

Assistance in the form of bridge financing, equity or equity-linked instruments ranging from $100,000 to $1.5 million is also available.

We look forward to working closely with SFA to achieve the objectives we have in mind, which is to ensure sustainability and growth for the fintech community here in Singapore, said Razer chief strategy officer and Razer Fintech CEO Li Meng Lee said about the partnership.

Razer Fintech is one of the largest offline-to-online digital payment networks in Southeast Asia and has processed billions of dollars in total payment value since its establishment in 2018. • Razer-Led Consortium Bids for Digital Banking License

Razer-Led Consortium Bids for Digital Banking License

A consortium led by Razer is the latest to join the race for one of Singapore’s five digital banking licenses.

The consortium includes the Singapore supermarket giant owners’ – the Lim brothers – private vehicle Sheng Siong Holdings; Richard Li’s insurance firm FWD Group; internet entrepreneur Chen Danian’s tech company LinkSure Global; Insignia Ventures Partners; and Carro, an online marketplace for cars.

Razer, which leads the consortium, will own a 60 percent in the stake with the remaining five partners holding a 40 percent stake, according to an SCMP report citing a statement.

We’ve thought about this long and hard,» said Lee Li Ming, Razer’s chief strategy officer and the newly appointed CEO of Razer Fintech as of January 1. We believe that we can do something revolutionary here in Singapore.

According to Lee, the firm will target those in the age group of 12 to 35 years old due to the segment’s limited financial knowledge and challenges with entering the banking system due to a lack of savings and credit history. The firm will look to leverage its base of young users alongside its existing digital payment networks Razer Merchant Services and e-wallet service Razer Pay.

Youth and millennials are underserved even in a crowded space like Singapore, Lee commented. We want to help them from a young age.

Prior to the Razer-led consortium, Grab and Singtel were the latest to reportedly form a partnership to jointly bid for a digital banking license. The Monetary Authority of Singapore will announce the successful recipients of the digital banking clines in mid-2020.

  • Razer opens its first London flagship store

Razer opens its first London flagship store

Singapore and Hong Kong-backed gaming company Razer has opened a flagship store in London’s West End as it tries to boost its global reputation.

Backed by Singapore fund Temasek with Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-shing and founded by Singaporean entrepreneur Min-Liang Tan, Razer has expanded from its gaming-hardware roots into software and financial services.

The new RazerStore in London is the first in Europe and the brand’s largest yet with a 3700sqft footprint. It follows stores in Las Vegas, and San Francisco in California, Causeway Bay and Tsim Sha Tsui in Hong Kong and another in Taipei. RazerStore London opened to long queues.

Like Razer’s other stores, the British venue is almost all black with contrasting bright green throughout.

“All in all, it’s a decent retail experience, quite dissimilar to the Apple retail stores, but in a familiar kind of way,” observed Adrian Ip of WCCF Tech in a commentary posted online.

“Where Apple is all light colors and airy atmospheres, Razer knows its audience and is primarily targeting it at hardcore gamers so thumping music, black paint, and RGB everywhere is the order of the day.”

Visitors can try out all the Razer goods including mice and keyboards designed for gamers, headsets and the brand’s Blade-series laptops. Accessories and a small range of apparel complement the offer.

In the downstairs area of the store, guests can play the game Fortnite, using Razer equipment, and there is a streaming booth.

Ip said he was told by staff that RazerStores offer the brand a physical presence in major cities to market their goods as well as get more people hands-on with their gaming equipment.

“This makes them less reliant on reviewers, but these are no glory loss-leaders: the stores have quickly reached profitability after launch”.

“Given London’s location as a major global city with a large and wealthy population, it seems likely that this shop should reach profitability relatively quickly too.”

With Mr. Lim coming on board, we will be able to leverage on his extensive experience and network in the global financial markets to scale up and successfully execute on our strategic roadmap,” said Tan Min-Liang, co-founder and CEO of Razer.

The 2400sqft Linq Promenade outlet will open to gamers and the general public on September 7 in a location that sees nearly 22 million global visitors annually.

“It was totally natural for us to build our next retail presence in Las Vegas, where so many of our fans would be able to experience and enjoy our entire gaming ecosystem,” said RazerStores global director Christine Cherel. “Together with Caesars Entertainment, we have been scouting for the perfect spot for over a year – and now we have found it, right at the heart of one of the best places for entertainment in the world.”

Dubbed RazerStore LV, the Razer store in Las Vegas will aim to encourage and foster an avid gaming community, with esports and gaming events organised weekly.

  • Razer Partners Visa In Expanding Payment Network

Razer Partners Visa In Expanding Payment Network

Up to 60 million users of Razer’s mobile wallet, Razer Pay, will be able to try out the newly-developed virtual prepaid solution by Visa for making payments wherever Visa is accepted without the need for a bank account or a credit card, both companies announced on Monday

We want to make sure that we are able to introduce the benefits of mobile and digital payments to [the under-banked and under-served population in Southeast Asia], in order to bring them up to the formal financial system, said Chris Clark, regional president of Visa Asia Pacific, in a statement.

The new Visa prepaid service will be available in Southeast Asia next month, starting from Malaysia and Singapore where Razer Pay is already available. The service will then be expanded to other countries including the Philippines, where the launch of Razer’s e-wallet is in the pipeline, said Limeng Lee, Visa’s chief strategy officer. «Fintech is the extension of what we have been doing. We’re currently focusing on Southeast Asia where we see massive opportunity. There’s a huge youth demographic and a lot of them are gamers… and these are usually the early adopters of new technology,» Lee said.

Southeast Asia’s mobile payments landscape grew rapidly in recent years, driven by high mobile penetration rates and the popularity of mobile services. In particular, Vietnam saw the highest growth globally in mobile payments use last year, with six Southeast Asian countries, including Singapore and Malaysia, in the top 10 markets for the shift to mobile, according to a survey by PwC in April this year.

  • The Razer Phone 3 delayed because of 5G

The Razer Phone 3 delayed because of 5G

Most of Razer’s mobile division staff were either relocated or laid off last month, sparking speculation that the brand’s next smartphone may have been canceled. Last week, though, a report claimed that Razer had simply delayed its next-gen device and now the reason for this may have been revealed.

In a recent interview with Engadget, Razer CEO Min-Liang Tim suggested that buying a gaming smartphone right now may not be the best idea. He believes that gamers looking to purchase a device this year will “want to buy a 5G phone,” but purchasing one now means that there’s “no network to use it on.”

In the eyes of Razer, this essentially makes the higher price that 5G smartphones command unjustifiable at the moment. It also means that there’s less demand for 4G-ready gaming smartphones because consumers are waiting for 5G alternatives to become widely available.

Like its predecessors, the Razer Phone 3 wasn’t expected to arrive until mid-October or early November. But considering Razer’s current view on 5G networks, the smartphone now probably won’t make its debut until early 2020. By then, 5G networks should be up and running across the globe and there should be sufficient demand for such a device.

Razer launches country HQ in Malaysia, looks to groom next gen tech talent

Shortly after it announced the construction of a new Southeast Asia headquarters, Razer has unveiled its new country headquarters in Malaysia which will house over 280 employees. The investment strengthens Malaysia as Razer’s regional center of fintech innovation, e-sports excellence and talent development.

Razer aims to position itself as a fintech leader in Malaysia, with one of its initiatives being a partnership with property development company UOA Group to digitise and integrate its carpark payment system into the Razer Pay app. Upon completion, carpark users can settle their parking fees using the Razer Pay app without waiting in queues. It is also working with merchants in Bangsar South to accept Razer Pay

As part of its e-sports initiatives, Razer will share its expertise in the field with the Malaysian gaming community. This includes coordinating with industry partners to drive gaming events in the country, bringing the gaming community together and looking to support Team Malaysia for esports at SEA Games 2019.

Razer will also work with the government and industry partners to develop the next generation of tech talent in Malaysia. It will collaborate with institutes of higher learning, provide training and mentorship programs and offer exchange programs across the regional Razer offices.

The world now demands a high level of innovative thinking and entrepreneurial mindsets, and Razer will help nurture the future technology leaders of Malaysia.

Last year, Razer launched its e-wallet app for youth and Millennials in Malaysia and claimed to have signed up 500,000 users in less than a week. This month, Razer Pay has been expanded with major new features such as in-app coupons, instant messaging, and an enhanced e-wallet experience.

Razer has collaborated with Malaysia’s household brands to bring exciting offers to consumers. 7-Eleven is offering RM5 coupons and Kenny Rogers Roasters will offer RM10 coupons to Razer Pay users. U Mobile will also organize weekly contests with prizes such as the Razer Phone 2. Merchants operating in Bangsar South will also start accepting Razer Pay. These merchants will also begin to offer rewards programs enabled by Razer Pay, such as coupons and flash sales to help customers save time and money.

  • Gaming firm Razer opens first store in Hong Kong and sets its sights firmly on mobile industry

Gaming firm Razer opens first store in Hong Kong and sets its sights firmly on mobile industry

Razer, the popular US gaming peripherals brand which opened its first concept store in Hong Kong on Saturday, is now hoping to take on the mobile gaming industry after successfully disrupting the PC gaming scene with devices such as its powerful gaming laptops and mice, its chief executive has told us.

Razer, which is in partnership with Three Group – the mobile telecommunications arm of Li Ka-shing’s CK Hutchison on the development of the Hong Kong outlet – has its sights on taking on the mobile gaming landscape, too, which chief executive Tan Min-liang said “is going to be a huge part of our business”.

“There is so much potential for Razer – we’re still growing exponentially through the PC market … we’ve shipped over US$1 billion in hardware over the last three years, and we haven’t even gotten started on the mobile gaming market yet,” said Tan, who splits his time between San Francisco, where the company is based, Singapore and Taiwan, where Razer has its design centres.

The company on Saturday opened the doors to its sixth RazerStore worldwide, on Cannon Street in Hong Kong’s bustling Causeway Bay shopping district. Razer’s other shops are in Shanghai, Taipei, Bangkok, Manila and San Francisco in California.

An alliance was formed last month where Razer and Three will work together to offer specific tariff plans, services and devices to electronic games players around the world.

Tan also said Razer and Three will work together on “future mobile devices”, although he declined to elaborate on further details.

While Razer’s current product offerings are largely PC-focused, with its array of mice, keyboards and sleek gaming laptops, the company has yet to offer any peripheral devices for mobile gaming, although Tan believes is an industry that is ripe for disruption.

“When Razer first looked at gaming laptops, there were no products or services that really worked well for gamers. Similarly, right now I don’t see any mobile device or software platform that really fulfils the needs of the [mobile] gamer … there is a huge opportunity to disrupt the mobile market,” Tan told SCMP.

Razer is yet to reveal its plans in the mobile space, but it has made several acquisitions in the past couple of years to suggest it is moving towards eventually developing its own mobile devices or gaming platform for the growing number of users who play games on their smartphones or mobile devices.

In July 2015, it acquired Android gaming company Ouya for its Android TV games and online retail platform to bolster the game offerings for its Forge TV console product.

And in January this year, it bought Nextbit, the startup headed by several ex-Google employees who worked on Android and who produced the Robin smartphone, which amassed over US$1.3 million in pledges on crowd-funding platform Kickstarter.

“We’ve put together some of the best talent in mobile design,” Tan said.

“With Nextbit, we now have the top tech leads of Android from Google with us, and the former lead designer for HTC who has helped design HTC phones for [years].

“We’re bringing together the best possible talent at Razer to work on next generation devices,” he added.

Razer already has a large following in China and Hong Kong with its gaming peripherals consistently coming top in the category on e-commerce platforms such as Tmall and JD.com, Tan said.

A third of Razer’s business comes from Asia, a large part of which comes from China, he added, declining to provide specific numbers.
