Mobile app Ritual launches in Hong Kong to organize pickups

Mobile pickup app Ritual has launched in Hong Kong as it expands its global footprint, targeting cities with strong restaurant industries.

At the same time, the Canadian-and US-headquartered tech company is launching in Amsterdam, Hamburg and Berlin.

“Whenever we expand into a new city or country, we look for population density, strong restaurant coverage, and a food-focused culture,” said Ray Reddy, co-founder and CEO of Ritual. “Hong Kong, Berlin, Hamburg and Amsterdam met that criteria for us while also allowing us to maximize on how much we could learn from new, non-English speaking markets.”

Ritual provides restaurants with real-time data on store experience, food quality and customer satisfaction metrics so operators can increase their customer base, and keep up with customers’ favorites and run a better business, overall. The company’s social-ordering feature Piggyback connects more than 150,000 teams globally to connect and collaborate on lunch and coffee orders, making ordering more social and convenient.

The mobile pickup app Ritual now covers more than 50 cities in seven countries globally. The company was founded in 2014 and has raised US$127.5 million in venture funding to date with headquarters in San Francisco and Toronto.

  • Rituals in Hong Kong doubles down on growth

Rituals in Hong Kong doubles down on growth

Following its debut flagship in Times Square this summer, the second store of Dutch bath-and-body label Rituals in Hong Kong launched yesterday at IFC.

The brand plans to open two more stores in the city this year, along with its first travel-retail venture in South Korea.

Two decades after its launch, the concept of “slowing down” which Rituals’ promotes as the founding pillar of the brand, was probably a little ahead of its time. Now, however, the ‘mindfulness and wellness’ trend is both well established and growing.

Raymond Cloosterman, founder and CEO, told Inside Retail Asia that Rituals in Hong Kong has received a positive reception since its launch there: “The people of Hong Kong have really embraced our ‘slow-down’ ethos, promoting the importance of self-care for body, mind and spirit. We look forward to making Rituals accessible to new audiences in Hong Kong as we expand in the future.

“Besides this there is a clear, strong positioning and tangible consistency in everything the brand presents, from product to packaging to our retail concept. And the quality for an affordable price is another cornerstone of our strategy.”

    Digital plans and future growth

With a historic presence in concessions, especially in travel retail, Rituals has more recently been focusing on expanding with standalone stores. In Asia Pacific, it plans to continue developing this model with more than 10 new travel-retail locations to open this year.

While a European brand, the roots and ideology of Rituals was inspired by Eastern philosophy.

“Asia was always in the long-term global vision for Rituals and we are so happy and proud to have opened our first store in Hong Kong,” Cloosterman said. “You can almost say it’s where Rituals was really founded, since the ideology of the brand is very much inspired by honoring Eastern philosophy.”

To embark on its Asia expansion, Rituals had opened up a new regional head office and warehouse facility in Hong Kong. Now it is turning its focus to digital engagement as well.

“Hong Kong is a true metropolis as well as a leader in the digital retail experience,” Cloosterman told Inside Retail Asia. “To be at the centre of it provides a great opportunity for Rituals to launch our brand.

“We are constantly working on our digital proposition as it is one of our four pillars aside from Domestic Retail, Travel Retail and Wholesale.”

The brand will also be launching its own e-commerce store soon, along with a Rituals app that provides guided meditations and yoga classes.

Rituals Hong Kong Store About To Open

The first standalone Rituals Hong Kong store is slated for opening in July as the Dutch cosmetics retailer ramps up its presence in Asia.

The company has promoted business development manager of travel retail, Marjet de Vlieger, as head of travel retail Apac. She will take up the newly created role on July 1 and relocate to the city in January. A Rituals Hong Kong office and warehouse are set to open next month.

Until now, Rituals has only been sold in the region through concessions, including one at the T Galleria by DFS stores on Kowloon’s Canton Road. But that is about to change. Along with the Hong Kong store, the first in Asia, Rituals plans 10 new points of sale in the region, including a debut in South Korea.

“Opening the Hong Kong office and warehouse facility is a major investment and steps forward as we look to convert the Asia opportunity,” said Rituals director of travel retail Neil Ebbutt.

“For Rituals, travel retail is leading the way in building the brand’s presence in Asia, which not only shows the power of the channel but also allows airports and retailers to better differentiate themselves by being the gateway into the Rituals world.

“Our vision is to build a truly global lifestyle brand and we’re ready to capitalize on this travel retail-first approach,” he said.

Rituals has a five-year plan to build sales across Asia encompassing travel retail, standalone stores, and e-commerce. It will seek partnerships with airlines and hotels through a network of distributors.
