    The National Assembly of Vietnam has directed the government to construct a strategic plan for establishing a gold trading exchange. This endeavor is in response to the escalating prices of gold and aims to control and regulate the bullion market.

    The Need for a Gold Exchange

    Lawmakers have been emphasizing the importance of such an exchange in order to guarantee transparency in gold trading. This concern arises from the current market situation where the gold price in Vietnam is approximately 15% more than the global rates.

    The State Bank of Vietnam’s Plan

    The State Bank of Vietnam has introduced a plan to instigate a gold trading platform in three successive phases. The first phase involves trading raw gold, followed by trading gold bars in the second phase. The final phase will encompass trading gold certificates and derivatives.

    Current Gold Market in Vietnam

    The Saigon Jewelry Company recently listed the price of gold slightly lower than the highest peak recorded on Dec.1, at VND154.7 million (US$5,873.31) per tael of 37.5 grams. Furthermore, the price of gold in Vietnam has increased by more than 80% since the start of the year.

    In an effort to liberalize the market, the government in October lifted its monopoly on gold production. Private firms meeting specific financial criteria are now allowed to produce bullion.

    Shein pledges an additional $85 million to support its ESG roadmap

    China’s Shein has allocated an additional US$85 million over five years for its Global Community Empowerment Commitment.

    The fund will bring the company’s ESG roadmap pledge to $155 million, following the $70 million committed last April. The strategy, dubbed ‘EvoluShein’, consists of nine environmental and social priorities organized under three strategic pillars – People, Planet and Process.

    According to the company, while the $70 million commitment will be used to fund the company’s manufacturing supplier community, $50 million and $35 million will be used to support ‘aspiring designers’ and women, young people, and the underprivileged, respectively.

    “This fund will support these communities to grow alongside Shein, towards a more equitable future,” said Molly Miao, COO at Shein.

    Shein, which sells goods in more than 150 countries, is headquartered in Singapore but manufactures most of its products in China.

    Last month, US states asked the Securities and Exchange Commission to audit the chain for the use of forced labor ahead of its potential IPO.

    UBS Appears to be Mapping out a Digital Roadmap

    Many banks are making digital products an essential part of their offerings. It looks like UBS is joining the fray. UBS, Switzerland’s largest bank as registered several new brand names in the Swiss trademark register.

    Among the new brands are UBS Key4 banking, UBS Key4 wealth, and UBS Key4 business, which have been registered and are now legally protected product names of the bank.

    To date, however, Key4 is only the name of the online portal by which UBS has been selling its own and third-party mortgage loans since 2020. According to the report, the registrations of the new trademarks could indicate UBS is in the process of building additional brands for a future digital business.

    UBS rival Credit Suisse launched a digital product in 2020 and trades under the name CSX.
