Bundaberg expands range with new Campfire rum

Australian distillery Bundaberg Rum is expanding its liquor range with the launch of Bundaberg Campfire.

Bundaberg Campfire has an ABV of 37 per cent and is made from aged reserves, combined with rum, and aged in bourbon barrels. It boasts a mellow profile and a blend of toasted caramel and vanilla notes, complemented by burnt sugar and toffee aromas.

Sarah Watson, blending and innovation manager, Bundaberg Rum, said the brand understands customers who seek fresh innovations within the dark spirits category, and the new drink addresses this demand.

“This is a subtle blend for us, made smooth and mellow thanks to the influence of lightly charred Bourbon barrels,” she added.

“We’re excited to introduce a product that introduces Bundy fans and Bourbon enthusiasts to a fresh and intriguing flavor profile.”

Bundaberg Campfire is sold at an RRP of $55 for a 700ml bottle in major retail outlets and will join the brand’s permanent range of products.

Bacardi launches its first premium spiced liquor

Bacardi has announced the launch of its new Bacardí Caribbean Spiced rum, which is said to be the brand’s first premium spiced aged product.

The aged rum-based spirit is created with pineapple, coconut, vanilla, and cinnamon.

To create the Caribbean Spiced rum, Bacardi’s process uses both a heavy-aged rum base which provides the bold smoky flavors of molasses, and a light-aged rum base, along with blending coconut blossom sugar, pineapple and coconut water. After being rested and filtered, cinnamon and vanilla are blended into the spirit, followed by a further rest and a second polishing filter for clarity and color.

Dickie Cullimore, global brand ambassador for Bacardí Rum, said: “Category research showed us that flavored and spiced are the fastest growing segments in rum and specifically premium rum, and the Piña Colada has risen through the ranks as a top five cocktail. Even more exciting was our discovery that people were looking specifically for unique flavors and aged rums.”

He continued: “Understanding this desire was key in creating Bacardí Caribbean Spiced and ensuring the flavors and aged rum quality were intensified to deliver the best craftsmanship and taste”.

Bacardí Caribbean Spiced, which has an ABV of 40%, is currently available at Ocado and will roll out in retailers nationwide, including Tesco and Waitrose, from next month.

“The new EU-BUNDY collaboration is a perfect marriage of two Queenslanders. Bring it on.

“I’m as excited as a frog in a sock to try the new EU-BUNDY spiced rum lager.”

The drink has been described by its creators as “a classic Aussie Lager mixed with a classic Aussie Rum” and “A lagery lager with Bundaberg Spiced Rum – lightly infused with hints of vanilla and aromatic spices.”

Nambour resident, former 2011 MasterChef contestant and keen Bundy Rum fan, Jay Huxley has collected and drank the Queensland favorite for more than 20 years.

When Mr Huxley’s father lived in Bundaberg, he was able to up his collectors game, by getting his dad to make special trips to the distillery to buy him exclusive and limited edition bottles.

The local catering business owner and chef even incorporates spiced rum flavours and deserts created with Bundy Rum as a base.

“Over the years I’ve gathered quite a collection and developed a keen appreciation for it,” Mr Huxley said.

“Bundy itself is uniquely Australian and I love the taste.”

He said the new EU-BUNDY collaboration was extremely exciting, as both businesses produced consistently quality products.

“I can’t see it not being amazing; being from these two places, pretty much everything both of them do is great,” he said.

“I am very interested to try the new spiced lager and will certainly keeping an eye out for it and trying it out.”

Eumundi Brewery Head brewer Chris Sheehan said the partnership continues to combine two of the finest Queensland producers – Eumundi Brewery and the Bundaberg Rum Distillery – with strong local roots.

“When we released the EU-BUNDY Black Rum and Plum Pudding Ale last year, we were astonished by its popularity, with people lining up to get their hands on the festive release,” Mr Sheehan said

“We’re confident this classic blend will be the cheers of the town and is bound to be a hit with those looking to crack open a cold one … or a great pairing to enjoy themselves this summer.”

The Bundaberg Rum Distillery’s Duncan Littler was also eager to welcome the new lager, which he describes as “the best of the two best worlds, in one can”.

“We are using a crisp Lager base and combining it with our Bundaberg Spiced Rum, giving drinkers a cracking rum infused beer that has a super refreshing taste,” he said.

A limited release of the Eu-Bundy Spiced Rum Lager will be available at the Bundaberg Rum Distillery, The Imperial Hotel Eumundi, online at eumundibrewery.com.au, and other select stores in Queensland. The limited-edition EU-BUNDY Spiced Rum Lager hit stores earlier this week.

  • Sydney Rum Distillery to take control of Cargo Cult

Sydney Rum Distillery to take control of Cargo Cult

The Sydney Rum Distillery (SRD) has acquired the independent craft producer Cargo Cult for an undisclosed fee as it sets out to build up a portfolio of brands in preparation for the construction of a new distillery capable of producing 1.2 million litres of pure alcohol a year.

Founded in 2015 by manufacturing and retail veteran David Ward alongside spirits industry professional Chris Middleton, the startup has invested considerable research and development in creating plans for a large-scale manufacturing facility for Australian rum.

The team behind SRD is now ready to secure a site for the distillery in Northern Sydney or Central Coast while actively looking to collaborate, partner and acquire like-minded rum producers and brands at home and in the Asia Pacific.

After appointing Steve Magarry – previously the group distiller at Bickford’s’ Beenleigh Distillery in Queensland – as CEO earlier this year to drive its next phase of growth, the premium rum collective felt the time was right to capitalise on several months of discussions and acquire Cargo Cult.

“The quality of the liquid attracted us – it is a low, no added sugar alternative for a spiced rum,” Magarry told Business News Australia.

“There is authenticity there with the liquid, and it has a great botanical profile compared to other spice rums available on the market. We recognise the low- and no-sugar health trend moving forward and plan to capitalise on that from a product perspective and business opportunity.

Established in 2014 by Jonny Croft, premium South Pacific rum brand Cargo Cult is made by The Small Batch Spirits Company and is composed of distillates from Papua New Guinea and Fiji which are blended, spiced and bottled in Australia.

Cargo Cult, uniquely featuring no added sugar, is made with botanicals like ginger, cardamom and clove to provide a spicy kick and is available in two varieties; a dry spice rum and an innovative banana spiced rum made with Queensland bananas.

Croft, who worked at US beverage manufacturer giant Brown Forman for almost a decade before founding Cargo Cult in 2014, claims his rums are favoured by bartenders who prefer working with a less syrupy and more-balanced mixture.

“Cargo is a brand with a great story, and it is a great product with a unique origin, but what it really needs at this stage is scale,” Croft explains to Business News Australia about why he thinks it is the right time to sell the business.

“We need to get to the global market and be able to support the brand in the right way. After this initial bootstrapping period, now’s the opportunity to scale the brand and start to get those economies of scale.

“We want to build the brand with consumers all around the world while also continuing to support the local market, but this feels like perfect timing.”

Having already raised $4 million from investors like logistics specialist Paul David and timber and hardware merchant Danny Gattone, the founders behind SRD are convinced of the potential of combining Australia’s unique botanicals with artisanal craftsmanship.

Magarry points to the rise in the popularity of premium spirits in the last few years, pointing out that consumers will pay more for brands that provide “integrity, authenticity and transparency”.

He thinks the leading indicators suggest rum is the next spirit likely to take off in this sector following the recent revival and regrowth of premium whiskey.

Croft agrees and thinks rum will be the “next cab off the rank” and has been very impressed with SRD’s knowledge of the Australian market while also seeing the growth opportunities the global market offers.

“When you look across the spirits categories, you see all these other categories that have gone through this premiumisation journey; you look at it look at whiskey, tequila, gin, even bourbon; and rum, as the third-largest global category is the last big category to go on that journey,” Croft said.

“I see a tremendous opportunity for rum, especially as people start to appreciate origin stories and product stories and learn how it’s made and how each rum offers a distinctive taste depending on where it originates from.

“I think we will see this category go on the same premiumisation journey shortly.”

Having “ticked the box” and served his apprenticeship as a sole entrepreneur, Croft is not fazed, having been appointed chief marketing officer and director of Sydney Rum Distillery following the conclusion of the deal.

“When you come out of a big organisation, like Brown-Forman, to become a solo entrepreneur, it’s a big cultural shift,” Croft says.

“From sitting on the 22nd level of a tower in Hong Kong, worrying about the emerging middle class in China over the next 10 years, to selling bottles of rum out the back of your car to tattoo-covered bartenders for cash – it’s not for everyone!”

“I kind of expected that’s how it was going to work because when you are a start-up, no one’s going to be interested in you, no distributor will want to touch you, so you’re going to have to build the product and brand by yourself.”

Croft found the experience refreshing and loved the journey while finding it scary but also very exciting and fulfilling.

However, he has admitted to himself that the business reached an inflexion point, and he needed to sell the company to shift gears, bring it to the next level, and be ready to capitalise if an opportunity comes.

  • Bacardi launches Exceptional Cask Series in Asia DF

Bacardi launches Exceptional Cask Series in Asia DF

Bacardi Global Travel Retail announces the launch of the Exceptional Cask Series – a collection of ‘extremely rare, superlative’, aged single malt bottlings – hand-picked from the distilleries for Aberfeldy, Aultmore, Craigellachie, Royal Brackla and Glen Deveron.

Bottled in small quantities, the new series comprises a limited number of extraordinary Single Cask, Double-Cask and Small Batch releases chosen by Dewar’s Master Blender and Malt Master, Stephanie MacLeod.

Only a handful of expressions will be released by each distillery. “Proudly showing the age of the whisky, all bottlings are numbered and will be available in very limited numbers due to the nature of single cask, double cask and small-batch whiskies,” says Bacardi.

Now available in select airport retailers in global travel retail, the initial series launch includes the Aultmore 1986 (31 years old) – Single Cask which was originally created especially for the DFS Master of Spirits 2018, and is now available with select retailers in Asia Pacific.

    MATURATION

“The sherry cask maturation develops Aultmore 1986 with aromas of dried fruits and Christmas cake, a rich dark amber, almost mahogany colour,” says Bacardi.

“Often shrouded in fog, Aultmore distillery has developed a secretive air since it was founded in 1897. The mysterious Foggie Moss conceals the age-old water source, while the wild, wet undergrowth purifies it to the profit of Aultmore’s refined character creating a smooth, clean taste.”

In addition to the Aultmore 1986, Bacardi will be launching the Craigellachie 1992 (24 years old) Small Batch; Craigellachie 1999 (17 years old) Small Batch with Palo Cortado Finish; Aberfeldy 1984 (33 years old) Single Cask and Aberfeldy 1999 (18 years old) Small Batch Port Finish.

“Maturation is my favourite part of the whisky making process,” says Stephanie MacLeod. “Once the whisky is in a bourbon or a sherry cask, you might expect certain outcomes but you’re certain to have a few wonderful surprises along the way.

“It’s a question of working with the whisky and the different elements at play in maturation to achieve the right outcome. With Aultmore 1986, for example, I needed to consider all these nuances and sampled lots of different casks to discover those that displayed a new and different side to the Aultmore personality, while ensuring it’s drinkable at cask strength at around 50% ABV.”

    ‘INCREDIBLE RECEPTION’

Gaurav Joshi, Director, Bacardi Global Travel Retail Asia Pacific commented on the launch during this week’s TFWA Asia Pacific exhibition: “We’re extremely proud to offer the Exceptional Cask Series in Asia Pacific and we’re excited at the prospect of success with the range, following the incredible reception for Autlmore 1986 at DFS Master of Spirits in March.

“Asia Pacific is a region with many types of new and experienced whisky collectors and connoisseurs actively looking for their latest discovery in aged single malt.

“Offering them that chance in travel retail adds true dynamism and excitement to the channel and reinforces the fact that the quality and experience of airport shopping in the region leads the world.”
