    New-Gen Volvo S60 Sedan To Be Unveiled This Month

    The new-generation Volvo S60 sedan will be unveiled in India on November 27, 2020. Of course, given the current situation with the pandemic, the car will be revealed via a digital event, while the official launch will take place in the first quarter (Q1) of 2021. While the car was supposed to be launched this year itself, the COVID-19 and the resultant lockdown has forced the company to push the launch to next year. Last year, Volvo India had announced that it will be introducing 4 new electrified cars in the country in the next 3 years, so the S60 coming to India could be the plug-in hybrid version.

    Volvo Cars plans to slowly phase out conventional powertrains and focus only on electrified vehicles like PHEVs and fully electric vehicles (EVs). The company has already committed to a goal of featuring some form of electric propulsion in its models from 2019 onwards and now India too is part of this plan. Every new Volvo from 2019 onwards will be electrified.

    Volvo India had announced that it will be introducing 4 new electrified cars in the country, so the S60 could get a plugin hybrid version.

    The Volvo S60 coming to India has been in the global market for a couple of years now, and we have already driven the global-spec model. Overall, the car has become much sleeker now and flaunts some bold character lines that give it a sculpted look. Upfront the car comes with a wide grille with a chequered grille and the Volvo badge at the centre. It’s flanked by a set of sharper-looking headlights with the signature Thor Hammer LED daytime running lamps, and a sporty bumper. The car also comes with a set of 19-inch alloy wheels, along with a new rear design featuring S90 style C-shaped LED taillights, centrally positioned Volvo lettering, and the muscular rear bumper.

    The Volvo S60 is a petrol-only model and it comes with a 2.0-litre in-line 4-cylinder engine, mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

    The regular petrol model gets a 2.0-litre in-line 4-cylinder engine which is turbo-charged and pumps out 310 bhp and 400 Nm of peak torque, while mated to an 8-speed automatic. The plug-in hybrid version though gets the same 2.0-litre motor, but, with an electric motor at the rear. The combined power output is about 413 bhp and the total torque output stands at 670 Nm. In pure electric mode, the car can cover a range of up to 45 kilometres.

    Volvo S60 And V40 Discontinued In India

    Volvo Auto India has finally pulled the plug two of its oldest models in the domestic line-up. The Volvo S60 sedan and the V40 hatchback have been discontinued in India, along with their cross country versions. The cars have also been de-listed from the company’s website. The Swedish automaker has confirmed the development. With both the cars already discontinued globally, it was only time that they would go off sale in India too. Volvo imported these cars as Completely Built Units (CBUs), which means they adhere to the global lifecycle. While the cars have been discontinued, certain dealers do have an example or two of the older generation S60 in their inventory.

    So, when do we see the new Volvos then? Well, not for a while actually. The Volvo V40 will be discontinued globally by the end of this year and will not have a direct replacement. Instead, a new SUV coupe likely to be positioned below the XC40 and will replace the hatchback instead. Power is expected to come from petrol, hybrid and electric options on the new offering. The V40 replacement will be based on the automaker’s Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform that also underpins the XC40 SUV.

    On the other hand, the next generation Volvo S60 has already been revealed globally and is based on the automaker’s new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform that underpins the new and larger cars from the automaker. The new generation S60 was expected to go on sale this year in India but the launch has been postponed to 2020, according to the company. The new S60 is likely to be locally assembled when it arrives in India, like the other models based on the SPA platform including the S90 sedan, XC60 and the XC90 SUVs.

    The outgoing Volvo S60 arrived in India in 2011 and helped the brand grow amidst the German offerings. The Volvo V40 arrived in India in 2013 in the Cross Country guise, and was the brand’s most affordable offering till the standard version was launched later. Currently, it is the Volvo XC40 that is the brand’s most affordable offering in India. The company’s newer models have also been able to help the brand grow immensely in recent times. Volvo India registered a 11 per cent increase in volumes for the first half of 2019, quite contrary to the lull period that the Indian auto industry is going through.

The company is bracing the new year with equal confidence and wants more cars to come to the country and of course the new Volvo S60 is all set to be launched in the country. Speaking to carandbike Charles Frump, Managing Director – Volvo Car India said “I think with the S60, we are all excited that it’s coming to the country. The car is currently being produced in the United states and we are looking at the possibility of bringing it to India. Chances are that now it’s going to be in 2020 rather than 2019. But certainly that car will be coming”

    Volvo India had already announced that it will be introducing 4 new electrified cars in the country in the next 3 years. In its commitment towards the environment and electrified future, Volvo Cars plans to slowly phase out conventional powertrains and focus only on electrification. This announcement places electrification at the core of Volvo’s future business. It also paves way for the complete phase-out of combustion-engine-only models. The company has already committed to a goal of featuring some form of electric propulsion in its models from 2019 onwards and now India too is part of this plan. Every new Volvo from 2019 onwards will be electrified.

    Frump said, “If we look farther out into the future then we have a line up of plug-in hybrids coming. So we’ll start with the XC90 and that will happen this year, it will be locally assembled and then we’ll locally assemble a range of plug-in hybrids. The next thing that we’re thinking about is pure electric cars and that’s clearly a direction that the Indian government and Volvo is heading towards. By 2025 we want to have a million electric vehicles on the road.”

    The decision to move to electric vehicles couldn’t have come at a better time for Volvo as it readies its EVs and PHEVs for launch in the country and the support of the Government of India is of utmost importance. “We had great news just before the budget where they took the customs duty, if its assembled in India, from 30% to 15% and that has really improved the business case for us. The moment that happened, I got on to a phone with Sweden, asking them, how can we make this happen even quicker. It’s had a big impact and it’s very much appreciated by us.”

    Volvo recalls vehicles in US, Canada for seat belt problem

    Volvo is recalling about 79,000 cars and SUVs in the US and Canada because the front passenger seat belt may not hold people in a crash.

    The recall covers certain S60, S90, V60, XC60 and XC90 vehicles from the 2016 and 2017 model years.

    Volvo says in government documents that a buckle stud can come loose, allowing the buckle to separate from a bracket. If that happens, the belt may not hold the front passenger in a crash. The company said Wednesday it has no reports of injuries. It does not expect to find any loose studs but says it’s recalling the vehicles as a precaution.

    Dealers will replace the buckle if needed at no cost to owners starting December 12.

    Volvo began investigating the problem after getting reports of buckle failures starting in August. It traced the trouble to cars made from February 16, 2015, to August 22, 2016
