Sumo Sushi & Bento launches in India

Dubai Japanese restaurant chain Sumo Sushi & Bento is entering the Indian market.

The firm has partnered with local operator FranGlobal to open up to 25 outlets within five years, with the first location launching in either Delhi or Mumbai within six months.

“India is a vibrant and exciting country and people are demanding new cuisines and we will hit the mark on it,” said Sumo Sushi & Bento CEO Julianne Holt Kailihiwa. “There’s already awareness, interest and curiosity among Indians around Japanese cuisine, especially fusion oriented food. Sumo has been successfully running its chain of restaurants for 20 years catering to Middle East customers who have a very cosmopolitan taste. There’s also a big Indian customer base in Dubai hence we feel that India reasonably should be a scalable market for the brand.”

The firm has been operating in the Middle East for almost 20 years, catering to a cosmopolitan customer base with a strong vegetarian menu segment. It will be targeting a similar clientele in India’s major urban hubs.

“Our biggest challenge is to provide good quality product at a competitive price because the raw material used in Japanese cuisine is expensive,” said Franglobal CEO Venus Barak. “Our quality matches the ones offered in a five-star hotel. We also plan to introduce beer and wine in the menu.”

Pirata Group to launch new Japanese concept Honjo

Hong Kong dining concepts business Pirata Group is opening Honjo, a modern Japanese restaurant, in Sheung Wan district late next month.

As Pirata’s second Japanese concept, Honjo will be a 120-seat venue independent from its cosy street-inspired neighbour, TMK, set to launch a few days prior. Realised by interior designer Ben McCarthy of Charlie & Rose, Honjo is designed to remind diners of a modern restaurant set in the 1950s with a retro futuristic vibe, vibrant colours and intricate details from stained glass windows to hanging light fixtures.

“The interior of Honjo will be demurely and appropriately extravagant, a dream eclectic and quirky home complete with an expansive collection of New and Old World wines,” read press material put out by the firm. “It will be the imaginary backdrop of a typical Japanese person’s dream world, a communal aspiration shared by many. A short reprieve from reality, one enters a fantastical world where he or she lives lavishly in a home resembling a British manor from the 1950’s. Finding joy in traveling the world and being influenced by each vibrant culture visited, the dreamer will craft Honjo’s interior, philosophy and cuisine based on his or her fantasies.”

The restaurant celebrates the ability of Japanese cuisine to absorb inspiration and concepts from other countries, with a menu that will pay homage to a combination of Japanese people’s passion for exploring new flavours as well as their Japanese origin.

Pirata Group’s existing restaurants include The Optimist, Pici, Tokyo Lima, Meats, Chifa, Madame Ching, Chaiwala, The Loft and Hugger Mugger.

    Sushi for W390 in Korea

Korea’s retail giant Homeplus launched an expanded line of sushi, which will sell for 390 won (30 cents) each until April 6.

Homeplus announced Wednesday that it built on their existing sushi line “Chef Sushi,” which was originally limited to 16 types, to 34 variations. These bite-sized delicacies include localized specialties such as tuna-mayonnaise and beef bulgogi sushi, which will cater to the tastes of children and customers who seek something other than seafood on their sushi rice.

Homeplus’ Convenient Cooking Team manager Heo Na-young said, “We have seen a rise in demand for sushi at our branches due to the overall improvements in retail sushi qualities and the effects of recession.”

Heo said Homeplus will continue to expand the selection of sushi provided by the retail shop to meet customers’ needs and wants. Chef Sushi will maintain an affordable price range after the promotional period ends.

Homeplus also sells 8,900 won ($7.7) fried chickens.
