    87% Of Australians Have AI Privacy Concerns, Report Finds

    Eighty-seven per cent of Australians have concerns about privacy for artificial intelligence, according to Australian Retail Council research discussed at an industry roundtable in September 2026.

    The findings, highlighted by Diebold Nixdorf, show that only 5 per cent of Australians say they trust AI companies, presenting a live commercial risk for retailers integrating automation into everyday operations.

    Senior retail leaders at the gathering noted that while the technology for age verification, customer service, and loss prevention is ready, customer trust remains the primary barrier to adoption across Australian stores.

    Designing privacy into the checkout lane

    Automated age verification and theft detection represent the front line of store deployment. In international grocery markets, automated systems now approve most age-restricted purchases at self-checkout within seconds by processing visual data locally without retaining personal files.

    Hardware suppliers argue that keeping customer records off retail servers prevents chains from becoming targets for regulatory scrutiny. Similarly, loss prevention algorithms in newer self-checkouts prompt shoppers to scan missed items before store staff intervene, reducing confrontation at the register.

    Operating standards across store networks

    Supermarket operators across the Asia-Pacific region have accelerated camera-assisted checkout rollouts over the past three years to curb inventory shrink. Australian grocers that run uncoordinated systems across point-of-sale, payments, and security cameras risk alienating shoppers if privacy safeguards vary between store departments.

    For regional retail executives, deploying store AI without clear boundaries creates legal and operational liabilities. While Asian retailers in markets such as Singapore and Japan have integrated automated kiosks with high public compliance, Australian consumers push back when surveillance feels unchecked.

    Industry proposals for shared rules

    The push toward automation follows earlier disputes between major Australian supermarket chains and privacy regulators over facial recognition testing in retail aisles. Industry participants at the roundtable raised support for a retail-specific AI code of practice to set standard data retention limits across the sector.

    Diebold Nixdorf published the findings alongside its research report on self-service systems in Australia. Retailers now weigh whether to adopt voluntary operating rules or wait for formal regulatory guidelines on customer data capture at the till.

    Rising wages across developing economies are pressing store operators to replace manual routines with self-checkout kiosks, automated inventory tracking, and warehouse robotics. Worldwide automation revenue is projected to climb from $27.63 billion in 2024 to $44.3 billion by 2029, with Asian markets taking up a growing share of enterprise procurement budgets.

    Warehouses and Non-Food Chains Lead Spending

    Warehouse installations form the largest share of automation deployments in the region, pushed by logistics operators sorting heavier e-commerce parcel flows. Non-food retail stores represent the fastest-growing buyer category as fashion, specialty, and electronics chains adopt electronic shelf labels, autonomous mobile robots, and automated storage systems to defend operating margins.

    Technology vendors competing for contracts include Zebra Technologies, IBM, SAP, Microsoft, and Saison Information Systems, alongside automation hardware groups such as Honeywell, ABB, and Siemens. Cheaper cloud systems and IoT sensors have lowered entry costs, enabling mid-tier chains to buy tools once restricted to massive supermarket operators.

    Shift from Pilot Trials to Fleet Deployments

    Regional merchants previously limited automated checkouts and radio-frequency identification tags to flagship concept locations. Higher store operating expenses have pushed those tests into broad network rollouts across hypermarkets, specialty outlets, and distribution centers.

    Technology vendors are focusing on integrated suites that connect front-of-store optical sensors and automated sortation networks directly to enterprise planning software, targeting retail operators upgrading their infrastructure before 2029.

    7-Eleven Singapore added more than 1,500 exclusive products over the past 24 months and linked its digital app across more than 460 outlets nationwide.

    The convenience chain expanded its footprint beyond traditional impulse snacks, shifting square footage toward hot meals, private-label beverages, and licensed merchandise to build daily basket values.

    Self-Checkout and Hospital Automation

    Operational upgrades centered on store throughput. The chain installed dual self-checkout systems in more than 300 stores, giving staff the ability to toggle cashier stations to automated mode during morning and evening rush hours. At Singapore General Hospital, the operator opened a fully unmanned location using overhead computer vision and frictionless exit gates to process payments without cashier intervention.

    Physical refits also introduced dedicated sit-down dining counters and modular food prep stations. These spaces support branded ready-to-eat partnerships, including baked goods, personal-sized pizzas, and regional food collaborations with local operators such as Old Chang Kee and Andes by Astons.

    Omnichannel Ordering and App Metrics

    Digital ordering operations scaled through the dedicated 7-Eleven Singapore mobile platform, which accumulated 300,000 downloads within ten months of its February 2025 rollout. The app integrates three core transactional functions: EasyCollect, which routes click-and-collect fulfillment to neighborhood branches within 15 minutes, a digital stamp loyalty tracker, and prepaid product bundles called ValuePacks.

    Convenience operators across Southeast Asia face intense competition from instant-delivery platforms and specialty coffee chains, forcing traditional corner shops to emulate the Japanese konbini model. By building out prepared food counters, private-label collaborations, and in-app pickup, 7-Eleven is defending store margins against rising labor costs and higher urban commercial rents.

    The retailer is now tracking pickup adoption rates and repeat transaction frequencies through the app as it evaluates further autonomous store deployments in transport and healthcare facilities.

    Zara Stratford flagship store pioneers new approach to integrating stores and online

    A new Zara flagship unveiled in London this week gives an insight into its new global direction.

    High in technology, compact in footprint, Zara believes the new Westfield Stratford store concept will “transform the customer shopping experience at its heart”, integrating online and in-store shopping.

    It is the Spanish fast-fashion retailer’s first store in the world to introduce a fourth section after women’s, men’s and kid’s: online. A separate area has been designed to house two automated order collection points.

    The system’s optical barcode reader scans QR or Pin codes that customers receive when they place orders online. Behind the pick-up point, a robotic arm collects trays and organises the packages optimally according to their size, delivering orders for customers to collect in seconds. The system can handle 2400 orders simultaneously, enabling shoppers to collect purchases made through Zara’s e-commerce platforms. Online orders are available in store on the same day if made before 2pm, or the next day if made in the afternoon.

    Zara says the customer service features go beyond integrating online and offline shopping. The new store aims to create a “seamless, convenient and enjoyable shopping experience”. Interactive mirrors equipped with RFID readers can detect the garment a customer is holding, enabling customers to see what a complete outfit will look like in the mirror.

    Zara staff will use iPads to advise customers and accept payments on the shop floor. Customers can pay using their mobile phones via the Zara app or the Inditex Group app, InWallet.

    And to complement the regular cashier desks, there is a self-checkout area with a system that automatically identifies garments being purchased. Customers can simply confirm their items on a screen at the self-checkout before paying with their cards or mobile phones.

    The 4500sqm store has been under renovation since January and was temporarily replaced with the brand’s first pop-up store for the purchase and collection of online orders only, some of the features of which are replicated in the Zara flagship.

    Inditex chairman and CEO Pablo Isla described the reopening of the Zara flagship as an important moment for the company.

    “We are in a unique position as we enjoy a global sales platform that fully integrates stores and online. In recent years we have invested in the most advanced technology and optimised our stores for this aim. Our business model combines stores and digital seamlessly, and we are ready for the opportunities that this brings with current and new customers,” he said.

    From a design perspective, the store has a two-storey facade without shop windows on the first floor, providing a transparent view of the store’s interior architectural features and collections.

    The refurbishment of the Zara flagship follows the brand’s introduction of an augmented reality experience at 120 flagship stores worldwide for a fortnight earlier this year.

    Unmanned convenience stores are slowly making their way in South Korea and may significantly change or eliminate jobs behind the counter.

    Due to a steep rise in the minimum hourly wage, which will come into force next year, and advancements in technology, local retailers are adopting unmanned operations.

    There are five unmanned convenience stores in the country, according to industry officials.

    Lotte Group‘s Korea Seven started operating its unmanned store 7-Eleven Signature at Lotte World Tower in May. Retail giant Shinsegae operates four unmanned E-mart 24 stores nationwide.

    At the unmanned stores, consumers can buy products by scanning them at auto-checkout counters.

    “Whenever there was a person behind counter, I instinctively felt like I had to pick products fast and go to the counter,” Lee Gil-yong told DongA News.

    “But now that there are no workers in the unmanned store, I feel like I can take my time to choose what I want to buy.”

    But some people have had difficulty adjusting to the stores and their security features.

    According to E-mart 24, three out of 13 people who visited its unmanned store in Seongsu-dong, Seoul, between 11 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 24 did not know how to get in. The store operates without workers from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.

    To enter the unmanned E-mart 24 stores, shoppers must identify themselves with their credit cards. Also, they cannot buy alcoholic beverages ― a popular night-time product ― because unmanned stores cannot verify ages.

    E-mart 24’s unmanned stores suffered a decrease in sales, but cheaper labor costs meant the stores generated more profit.

    Concerns about the safety have also been raised because people entered without identifying themselves by waiting for the door to open for a shopper leaving the store.

    “We have not been able to operate the self-checkout machines in franchises because we have not yet found a way to prevent theft,” said an industry official.

    Only stores directly managed by headquarters operate unmanned checkout machines.

    “We are just checking the unmanned stores’ efficiency for now,” an E-mart 24 official said. “We have yet to decide whether to set up additional unmanned stores.”

    E-mart 24’s competitor 7-Eleven Signature has a HandPay system that identifies individuals by the pattern of their veins. Consumers can register their vein patterns on their Lotte Cards and the store will recognize the consumers.

    But shoppers have expressed discomfort because the store can only be accessed by those whose veins are registered.

    More retailers are expected to turn to automation due to the minimum wage hike next year, when the hourly minimum wage will rise to 7,530 won (US$6.67), up 16.4 percent from this year.

    Other major convenience stores such as GS Retail’s GS25 and BGF Retail’s CU also are preparing for unmanned stores.
